Theology in Exodus: Biblical Theology in the Form of a Commentary by Donald E. Gowan.

Short and Sweet - This commentary is the absolute best commentary available today on the book of Exodus (no offence to Brevard Childs whose book is slightly less critical). Gowan's commentary is excellent. It is perhaps the most well rounded commentary on the shelves. Not only is it biblical-critical and theologically reflective but it was also written to a wide audience with pastors and laypeople kept in the loop. After taking this book back to the library I couldn't help but check it out again and again.

A collection of short stories, TOE TO TOE is by turns witty, wistful, provocative, and wonderful.

A wonderful anthology, with selections that cover virtually every "vice" attached to man. Each one is celebrated in its way, and you are taken from the forbidden lust/love of adultery, and the guilty pleasure of voyeurism. A must have for any library.

This Ph.D. dissertation of Dr. Reggie Kidd does not read like a dissertation at all. It is an excellent example of fine Biblical Scholarship, taking the text seriously while interacting with various views. Kidd does make his points. This is not a restatement of others' work, but provides original research and theories on the Pastoral Epistles.

Kidd deals with Martin Dibelius, E.A. Judge, L. William Countryman, David C. Verner, and (Kidd's favorite) Ceslas Spicq. Spicq's (French and yet untranslated) commentary is shown to be of immense value.

Kidd explores the idea of a Christian middle class, upper class, and whether there is an "accommodative ethic" at work in the Pastoral Epistles.

Basic tool of 20th century biblical scholarship. Presupposes an oral stage in the development of the written gospels and that the pericopes existed as individual identifiable units or "forms" that were allied to certain situations in the life of the early Christian community. The hope is to be able to identify which part of the text goes back to Jesus himself and which were likely to have been "produced" by the early church. This book explains the pioneer efforts of Martin Dibelius and Rudoph Bultmann in applying form criticism to the synoptic gospels.

It is a great book. The kids love it.

I've only just got this book and already I've finished it. The fact is I couldn't put it down. The questions I found most entertaining were the ones about philosophy - Do Two Wrongs Make A Right anbd Can You Trust The Cretan Who Tells You All Cretans Are Liars and What Is The Meaning Of Life.
Thoroughly recommended.

Gordon Reid's collection of 366 excerpts from the works of George MacDonald is a way to touch one's spirituality every day. MacDonald, a theologian and writer of deep and soulful faith, saw God everywhere and in everyone. Like Madeleine L'Engle his faith glows through each word he writes. It is as much a part of him as the hand that pushes the pen. C. S. Lewis said of MacDonald "I regard him as my master . . . I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or continually close to the Spirit of Christ himself." And, after all, C.S. Lewis was no slouch in the area of theology, faith, and writing, himself! This book is a good thinking person's way to take a few moments each day and focus on what's important in life -- shutting out the noise of family life or traffic or work -- to embrace one's inner life, which is what ultimately sustains us and helps us grow and find peace and happiness.

John Gray has made millions on his "Mars and Venus" series of relationship books...But true romantics and lonely hearts will find Mike Nichols' book both howlingly funny and refreshingly real...No baloney here, just good, clean fun at the expense of both sexes...In the end, it's not how you play the game of love, but if you manage to keep your sides from splitting...This book is a humor classic!!
