A fun book of riddles
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-17
This book has a riddle written on English on the left hand side and on the right is a riddle in Chinese. The answer to the riddle is revealed on the right hand side of the following page with a drawing of the animal and the name of the animal in small red letters underneath the Chinese translation. The illustrations are in black and white and done in a soft, detailed style. Kids will enjoy trying to solve the riddles to discover the identity of the animals.

Hats

Review Date: 2007-06-12

This a delightful, rhythmic celebration of hats. You'll find every kind of hat you've ever dreamed of (and many you haven't).

A Hat like a stovepipe
A Hat like a pot
A Hat you fold up
A Hat you cannot..........

Hats made of velvet,
Hats made of silk,
Hats like plates
Or bottles of milk.

Lively, inventive verse and humorous, affectionate illustrations will have young children clamoring to join in the refrain: Ho for a Hat!

A quick, inexpensive guide that covers all the bases
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-24
I actually purchased this guide a few years back, and it is very good investment for the beginning comic artist. It is not a method drawing book...it doesn't really teach you a particular style of drawing, but instead focuses on the different elements of comic art that come in handy regardless of the specific details of your drawing style. There are chapters devoted to the layout of a comic page, one dealing with panels and words, one with camera angles and composition, and the all-important chapter on character design and anatomy. There's also a quick, full-color comic in the middle of the book that helps to illustrate many of the concepts. All in all, a great reference book for the first-time comic artist.

Roger Stevens - poetry for the child in everyone
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-15
Roger Stevens is a truly talented wordsmith:
His adjectives are amazing, his adverbs always aptly applied.
No noun is nonsense - even the abstract ones.
His pronouns are it. And his verbs vibrate with meaning.
But, above all, his prepositions are out of sight.

If you like the sound of this, you'll love Stevens' work.
If you don't have a child, buy his books for yourself.

Brightly colored, and a lot of fun!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

This cute little book (30 pages, excluding the title page and so forth) is another excellent example of the work of the incomparable Charles M. Schulz. In this book, when Charlie Brown and his family go away for a few days, he is forced to ask Lucy to take care of Snoopy. While Linus and Lucy try to make Snoopy feel at home, he is just not what they expect in a dog. Through all their adventures, the gang produces tons of fun for the reader!

When I was a child, I absolutely loved the Peanuts, and I am so pleased that my own children have now fallen in love with those same funny characters. This book is large and attractive, with brightly colored pictures that are sure to please the young reader (and Peanuts fans of all ages)! My children and I highly recommend this book to you!

To Be Read During Dark and Stormy Nights
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.

Charlie Brown goes to a Sports Banquet with Linus and Snoopy in hopes of seeing his hero Joe Shabotnik. Snoopy gets reported to the Head Beagle by Frieda (those 2 never did get along!)for not meeting his quota for rabbit chasing. Later, Snoopy is elected as Head Beagle (but finds the job tedious) and gets nominated Rookie of the Year! Linus is bribed by his grandmother to give up that old trusted blanket (give it up, Grandma!). Lucy takes care of Snoopy when Charlie Brown is away on vacation ("If you were my dog, I'd fix you good!"). And finally, you'll get a sneak preview of It Was a Dark and Stormy Night!

This cute little book (31 pages, excluding the title page and so forth) is another excellent example of the work of the incomparable Charles M. Schulz. In this book, Sally fumes and fusses as the new school year approaches. And, who does she fume and fuss at? Charlie Brown, of course!

This book is large and attractive, with brightly colored pictures that are sure to please the young reader (and Peanuts fans of all ages)! My children and I highly recommend this book to you!

A day by day look at Thoreau
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1997-07-18
"Oct. 22nd, 1837. 'What are you doing now?' he asked, 'Do you keep a journal?'-- So I make my first entry today." Thus begins Thoreau's Journal, made up of more then two million words and covering about twenty-five years of his life. No other work of Thoreau's better exhibits his discipline as a writer and his devotion to the natural world. In the Journal can be found the fragmented foundations of masterpieces such as Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod. But what is perhaps more interesting to a reader of Thoreau's Journal are his thoughts and insights on topics such as friendship, love, religion, nature, bravery, heroism, war, slavery, the art of writing, and, most important to Thoreau, the art of living. Anyone with any interest in Thoreau will find his Journal to be an invaluable aid in understanding and following the life of one of America's most profound prose writers

stunning, sensual, thought provoking
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-11
i chose this book for school because it was a short & easy read; i fell in love with it because, like few school books, i could relate so deeply to the main character. Edna Pontellier wakes up from a life in a dream and fights for self and independence- a struggle that anyone, especially adolescents, can identify with. I can't emphasize enough how beautiful and moving Chopin's prose is. Reading it was pure pleasure, and when self-realization and introspective thought comes along with that, you know the book is a winner.
