This book is an insightful collection of essays and manifestos which respond to First Things First 2000. The editors have done a marvelous job of including numerous viewpoints and introducing some new players to the field of critical writing on graphic design. It makes a great addition to the Looking Closer series and would be good reading for any serious graphic designer.

I read this book for a class. It has some fascinating insight into the world of graphic design. The compilation of essays is pertinent just as much today as they were when originally written(over the past 10-12 years).

I had this book when I was a little girl and loved it!! (It was published a year after I was born so it's been in my heart for a while). A friend of mine asked if I could pick up some books for her at the library and it was in her pile of many. I recognized it right away and started reading it while I was waiting to be checked out. I could not resist finishing it so I did - in the parking lot! I got that warm, tingly feeling all over. As soon as I walked in the door, I knew that I had to find it online! I feel like I've found the golden ticket. It is truly timeless. I'm getting it for a few friends and for my children - okay it's for me but they'll love it too!

This book can make anyone feel all tingly inside.

I would read this book when I was depressed from the time I was a little girl until now. At age 17, I still read this book when I am upset and it has yet to lose it's ability to make me feel better. Every page brings a smile to my face.

Wonderful for horse lovers and lovers of good stories

This collection of international folk tales that feature magical horses will delight any child who loves horses/ponies. My six year old daughter loves listening to the stories. The text is rather advanced, probably a fourth or fifth grade reading level, so she just follows along with the pictures in the book. I wish there were more of these, but the illustrations that are included are quite beautiful. The multi-cultural perspective is a positive aspect of this collection. Stories are from a range of cultures: American Indian, Russian, Indian, etc. Order and enjoy!

My 7 year old daughter received this book for Christmas and what a wonderful book for any child who loves horses and stories about them.

This book breaks down the stories by country and describes in detail the history of the breed of horse specific to that region and the story. It is a wonderful blend of fact and folklore with gorgeous illustrations. The stories are rich in detail but are not "fairy tales" nor are they about unicorns or flying horses or other horse-like animals. They are folktales about horses with special wisdom or magical powers.

I'd say this book wouldn't hold the attention of a typical 5 year old. Some stories are 2 or 3 pages long with only small illustrations that might become dull for a younger child.

But if your child is a fan of folklore and/or horses, he or she will love this book!

Except, this time the individual comic strips are packed with compressed humor. This book has many diferrent incidents in which Snoopy is often the central character. Featuring in this book is/are Charlie Brown's infamous base ball team, the World Famous Surgeon(Snoopy), and of course, Woodstock: "King of the Jungle"! This book is a good book for anyone of any age. It is fun and lighthearted. I also recommend Charls M. Schulz's "Being a Dog is a Full Time Job." The only thing wrong with this book is that it is not long enough! I also recommend any other Schultz "Peanuts" book.

More fun with the "Peanuts" gang

"Make Way for the King of the Jungle," by Charles M. Schulz, is a delightful collection of comic strips featuring the author's popular "Peanuts" characters. Many of the recurrent themes and motifs of the series are here: Snoopy's fantasy of being a World War I flying ace, the kite-eating tree, Linus' security blanket and his obsession with the Great Pumpkin, Lucy's psychiatric stand, etc.

In the course of this book we get to experience both Christmas and Valentine's day with the "Peanuts" gang. There are a lot of antics involving Snoopy and his pal Woodstock. But my favorite extended storyline in the book involves Charlie Brown's decision to quit school in order to devote himself to making Snoopy happy. Anyone who has ever been devoted to a pet should be able to relate to this funny but tender plot.

"Peanuts" has always been a successful blend of humor and gentle philosophy, and that is true of this volume. "Make Way" is a treat for fans of Schulz's work.

As a child I loved my Mother Goose rhymes in my Child Craft Books and the illustrations. As an adult I continue to love the Silly Ones! The cartoons with this book are an extra added feature! This is a great book!

Compiled and edited by Bobbye S. Goldstein, Mother Goose On The Loose With Cartoons From "The New Yorker" is a humorous and engaging satire of the classic mother goose nursery rhymes. Chuckle-inducing, thought-provoking cartoons and caricatures spoofing the adventures of Little Bo Peep, the Cow that Jumped Over the Moon, and many more as well as amusing variants of the rhymes themselves comprise this highly enjoyable parody. "When Jack climbed up the beanstalk / A mean giant he did meet, / So Jack slid down the beanstalk / And made a fast retreat!"

What a wonderful book! 'One-Hundred & One Read-Aloud Jewish Stories' is such a pleasure to read and so enjoyable - for both children and adults. It is the perfect book for a family to read over and over. This book encompasses a wide variety of stories from the Torah, Talmud & Midrash to contemporary Jewish writers, stories of Israel and the Diaspora. The stories are written in such a simple, understandable and most importantly, enjoyable way. This is a treasure you'll keep for many years to come in your book collection - you can't go wrong.

At this time in history, this volume is a valuable addition to any library. Children and adults can gain a greater appreciation for the Jewish heritage, Jewish religion and Jewish people. This generous collection includes stories and poetry from over 30 different notable books by well-known authors of the Jewish community that have been published in the last sixty-four years.

If you do not know about the holidays: Yom Ha-Zikaron and Yom Ha-Atzmaut, you will want to read this book. You will gain a much deeper appreciation for Israel, and the situation of today's state of affairs...

Stranded On A Desert Island? Take These 2 Volumes Along!
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-10
Someone once asked me, if I were stranded on a desert island, and could have one book with me, which would I choose? Easy answer - "The Oxford Anthology of English Literature." Actually, it's a two volume set - but I am designating the two volumes as one book, for desert island convenience.

This extraordinary 4,500 page collection contains Great Britain's finest literature from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Included are selections from "Beowulf," Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales," works by Spenser (excerpts from all books of "The Faerie Queene"), Sir Thomas Malory, Shakespeare (including "The Tempest'), Marlowe ("Dr. Faustus," "Hero and Leander"), John Donne, and Milton. There are over 100 pages devoted to William Blake, including "The Book of Thel," and the entire "Night the Ninth" from "The Four Zoas." It also contains poems and prose by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, and Byron. And this is just a small sample.

In addition to the general editors Frank Kermode and John Hollander, the anthology has been edited and annotated by Harold Bloom, Martin Price, J.B. Trapp, and Lionel Trilling. The editors contribute brief period introductions, biographical and critical pieces for major authors, and essays preceding the major selections.

There are almost 300 wonderful illustrations included in the collection, representing important artists and their works for each period, that demonstrate the relationship between literary and visual images.

I have read through this wonderful anthology many times over the years, and never fail to learn something new, something to excite my imagination, with each reading. Highest Kudos!

I still have my incredibly beloved and beat-up copy from college days at Syracuse University; along with my "Complete Works of Shakespeare" (ed. Bevington)and Lumiansky's translation of "Canterbury Tales," this is one of those books I'll NEVER let go; if I had it with me on a desert island, I wouldn't mind being alone for a few years. It's got everything you could ask for from English lit., with excellent footnotes and introductory materials. A real treasure trove, and a must for anyone who really wants to start digging into the major Western writers -- yeah, those dead white guys; not so popular anymore -- just the ones who hold up the pillars of Western civilization!

I bought this book for my grandsons because they had signed a copy out of our library and were so disappointed that they couldn't make everything in it. They are really happy to have their own, and the projects are so wonderfully made and colourful. Don't hesitate to buy this if you are looking for really sharp projects for your boys (or girls) to try - you won't be sorry, and it will keep them entertained for hours and hours.

Beautiful book with excellent examples for linking art and literacy.
Clear ideas and methods for utilizing a variety of hands-on techniques. The book is intended for children but is more suited to adults, specifically those who teach children.

This is the book to use if you want to help children see and participate in the creative process. I bought my first copy several years ago, when I was teaching in a one-room school house. It inspired kids from the 1st to the 8th grade. The examples of the artist's work are well-chosen, and the art and page layout is beautiful. The content is presented in comfortable thematic chunks just right for a few days work in the classroom, or an afternoon at home. It is multicultural and thematic.

for example --

Murals and Ballads - telling a story: Diego Rivera and E.B.White

Each poet and artist is given an interesting, child-friendly biography. There is a section called "making the connection," which guides the children through the theme to note the ways different artist/poets chose to express their vision. Last, but not least, each theme has a motivating writing and art project to go with it. In a world where less and less art, and less and less innovation are being supported in the schools, this is an ideal resource. It is a tool a teacher can fit into the day easily. It could provide a terrific substitute for a language handout or homework project.

Parents will find this a wonderful gift for their literary and artistic teenagers as well.
