Brilliant Comedy!

Review Date: 2004-05-25
Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding were a pair of brilliant and all too little-known comedians who came out of the golden age of radio. Their comedy was quite simply an endless satire of radio broadcasting itself. Actually, "comedians" sounds two obvious for their deadpan, parodistic humor - I think perhaps "comic artists" is more approriate. Instead of telling jokes, this comedic duo performed little plays where humor is created through characterization, irony, and word-play. This is verbal wit and high comedy at its best. Bob and Ray were too subtle to ever become really popular, but they always had a small and devoted following. Their dry, offbeat humor is impossible to adequately describe - you have to experience it to understand it. This award-winning compilation comes from the twilight of their long career - the 1980's. These particular performances come from Bob and Ray's Public Radio Show, and were recorded in front of a live audience, which only adds to the fun. There are dozens of B & R sketches here, including numerous installments of their hilarious mock-soap opera, "Garish Summit". Many classic B & R characters make apperances. Buy these cassettes and be prepared to become delirious with laughter!

Bob and Ray's low-key humor is perfect for long drives. I have the four volumes of "The Best of Bob & Ray." Each volume has four audiocassettes, each audiocassette with two 30-minute shows that will keep you in stitches and make the miles fly. "Garish Summit" is without a doubt the greatest soap opera ever to make you laugh so hard your nose runs.Volume 1 will have you longing for Wing Po, Traveling Philosopher, to come by and read your woodpile.

This is the best volume of a great set

I have the four volumes of "The Best of Bob & Ray," and this one is my favorite. The great classic routine "VCR Children" is on it as well as three others of what I think are their best routines: "Transatlantic Bridge," "South Quoddy Airlines," and the "Club of the Month Club." Can't explain it here--you'll just have to listen and laugh till your nose runs.

This is a wonderfully fun book for little adventurers (and their parents too)! This large book contains fourteen two-page foldouts, approx. 14 inches high by 19 inches across, and each picture is packed with informative, and often humorous, images, labels and text, surrounded by a decorative border. The fourteen "maps and sketches of lost worlds and mysterious places" are: the Garden of Eden; Atlantis; Noah's Ark; the Tower of Babel; Ancient Egypt, depicting the construction of a necropolis for Ramses II; King Solomon's Mines; Homer's Odyssey; Man Against Woman, showing a gladiatorial combat between men and women that took place in Pompeii two days before it was destroyed by Vesuvius; the Seven Cities of Gold; Sherwood Forest inhabited by Robin Hood and his merry men; King Arthur and his knights; Genghis Khan and the Great Wall of China; Dracula's castle; and Conan Doyle's Dinosaur Island.

Each pre-folded out page has several paragraphs of explanatory text that are intriguing and funny. A flat magnifier is attached to the book by a ribbon. The end pages show maps, explorer's tools and silly photographs of the author on his treks, while the book cover looks like Prof. Al Lorenz's travel-worn satchel.

This is a fun concept-book, well-executed and a pleasure for readers (of any age) who are adventurers at heart.

I was given this book by my father when I was seven years old and was thoroughly enchanted by it, and remain so to this day. The Owl and the Pussy Cat has passed into children's lore - many people know the rhyme through the song (was it Burl Ives?) or through new illustrated versions of it. They know the limericks (or at least the form, if not the rather esoteric content - the old man with the Beard, for instance, and the lady with the excessively long chin who

had it made sharp
and purchased a harp
and played several tunes with her chin).

But do they know of The Dong with the Luminous Nose, or the Pobble Who Has No Toes, or the short history of Violet, Slingsby, Guy, and Lionel? Or the illustrated botanical alphabet with such plants as the ManyPeeplia Upsidedownia (you'd have to see the drawing!) It would be impossible to say how many times I read, re-read, and enjoyed this book as a child and an adult, including the rather touching, affectionate introduction to the man himself.

Please, please buy this book. You'll never regret it.

The book is a lot of fun, but it can also be a serious tool for understanding English through its inventive vocabulary and the vivid imagery of the poems.

I have just entered the field of preschool and was disappointed in the books for activities until I found Carlson. Her book isn't full of kiddie graphics as if the kids were reading, her instructions are clear and careful. This book is fun because it gives so many ideas of using things around the house. I liked this book so much that I bought 50 to give to preschool teachers coming to a workshop. If you like to do things with your young children and someone doesn't give you Carlson's books, buy them.

This mini-serie is as close to perfect storystelling as you can get . The 'Reed's diary plot' is incredible . It seems to me the FF were created only to have this one story told . The Ben Grimm/Thing pages are terrific ,highly emotional . Claremont at his very best . Plus Jon Bogdanove pencils and Terry Austin inks !

What the FF and X-Men should be.

For anyone dissatisfied with Chris Claremont's current work on FF, or thirsting to see some classic Claremont work on both X-Men and the Fantastic Four, read this series. The characterization of both teams is excellent, and Claremont excels at telling an intriguing tale involving the very origin of the Fantastic Four and a vital turning point in the life of Kitty Pryde. Franklin Richards is the focus of this book, and his take on his family and on the plight of Kitty Pryde is fantastic. Read it.

I have long been a fan of Chris Claremont's stories, and books like this are the reason why. The book provides a beautiful transition for both X-Men fans wishing to learn about the Fantastic Four and FF fans trying to start a knowledge of mutants. This reprints the four issue limited series of the same name and is a tribute to Claremont's excellent ability to capture humanity in the most unlikely characters. Although well-known for his work on X-Men and other mutant books, Claremont has also wonderfully characterized the Fantastic Four showing both their great strength as a group and family as well as their weaknesses of self-doubt and uncertainty

This book will have you laughing all the way to the toilet...What you need to do is gather round your friends and family, even the old ones and enjoy this book together because it's quite fantastic. I started to look at his books at a very young age and was inspired to draw my own cartoons, which i have done for many years. So hopefully in a couple of years time I will be up there with the grandad himself! Richard

One of his best.

Gary Larson has most definitely outdone himself this time. This book is truly brilliant. Every drawing gets his point across and will make you laugh until you cry. Larson is undoubtedly the funniest cartoonist to ever live. Once you buy this book make certain that you do not have anything planned. Because once you start reading you will forget all about your plans. A must have for any Far Side fanatic or for anyone who likes to laugh.

This is the first and best Garfield book I've ever read. I've grown up with it, and know many cartoons by heart. A few of the best ones are when Garfield wakes up Jon, telling him that Garfield will do ALL the napping, and when he chases a giant hot dog and ice cream trucks, hoping they are meals to his proportion. If comic books could win Newbery award, this would be it.

24th Garfield Book Is Funny
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-07
Jim Davis, the author and illustrator of the Garfield comic strip, has a very wry and ironic sense of humor. Garfield the cat keeps his aloof perspective on the world of his human servant, Jon, and his silly, not-too-intelligent companion Odie. We are the beneficiaries of Garfield's point of view to the point of frequent laughter.

This book is a collection of strips drawn in 1992. Here is a selection of the vignettes for your consideration. In the opening of a strip Jon runs yelling "Giant rat!" Garfield watches nonchalantly as Jon runs off strip. Garfield then wonders whether he mentioned that he shaved Odie. In another strip Garfield intrigues us with his Birdbath of Death. In yet another strip Garfield discovers that a stack of cookies he just ate may have included a coaster.

Books about Garfield are consistently humorous, often to the point of needing to laugh out loud. Be sure you read this book alone. If not, everyone will think you are crazy for laughing so much. Enjoy!

A tremendously hilarious book!
