Must Have!

Review Date: 2007-06-15
After my second child's birth I was really stressed out with the jealousy of my older child, my husband's long work hours, and my post-partum depression. Beth's words of wisdom helped alleviate my guilt, especially when I felt like I was anything but an ideal mother. Her humor raised a smile and she tackled some topics that, unfortunately, mothers don't always talk about because we're afraid to admit that we don't love every aspect of motherhood (which, btw, is very natural).
Beth also encouraged me to take time out for myself and when with my children, to truly enjoy them. I still carry this book around with me....

A must-have for new mothers!

As a new mother, I absolutely adored this book. The author shared all of the thoughts and feelings of the new mother, which were the same as I was having about my new role in such a beautiful and heartfelt way, which helped me feel less isolated.

This is now one of my favorite things to give to mothers-to-be at baby showers!

This book was wonderful when I was a first time mother of twins. It helped me keep it all in perspective. When I was most frazzled, it made me realize that whether their stages brought good or bad, babyhood is precious and temporary.

This book gives you a good overview of what your Will should say. I used it as reference only. I had my lawyer revise some verbage in my will.

Simple and straightforward - includes CD with forms!

This book (6th edition) has taken a BIG weight off of my mind regarding writing a will. My husband and I currently don't have a will (and apparently have lots of company - reportedly 60% of Americans don't have wills), but I am in the process of changing that with the reassuring help of this book.

Yes, you CAN write your own legal will, and it truly isn't difficult. As this book points out, even lawyers use standard forms for wills which they customize to their clients. The NOLO CD that accompanies this book also contains standard forms which you can modify, and it walks you through the different parts of a will and the various decisions you need to make. It also flags decisions/areas that you need to give particularly careful consideration. And it flags more complications situations that might or do require a lawyer (such as, wanting to give more than 50% of your estate to someone other than your spouse).

I will say that our situation isn't complicated, our "estate" basically consists of our home and some savings/investment accounts, and we have young children to provide for. I feel very confident that a will written using this book/CD will be completely legal and appropriate.

But I think this book would be quite valuable even to people planning to use a lawyer for more complicated estate planning needs, as it explains wills and their components in clear, concise terms.

THis book provides good basic information for completing a will. Therefore, do not rely soley on it. It would not hurt to have an attorney to review your completed will after following the guidelines outlined in the books.

I bought this book mostly because I wanted my daughter in the right hands if something were to happen to both my husband and I. Peace of mind knowing that she will indeed end up with the people we select is worth a million and we didn't to have to spend much money to set this up. This book is great to have your wishes put down so everything is distributed how you want it. Much more convenient then going to a lawyer and saves you a lot of money.

Comprehensive legal guide to writing any kind of will. Don't put your estate planning off.

Nolo Press was founded on the principle that not all legal transactions require retention of a lawyer. A valid, legal will can be drafted with the help of Nolo's Simple Will Book. You will get far more utility than the cover price of $36.99 (regularly 30% off at Amazon) would get you from a lawyer for that cost. The author is quick to point out when specific family or estate situations are too complex to be addressed by a self-help title, and he directs the reader to professional legal help in dozens of specific scenarios.

For someone who has basic property and investments to leave in their will, this book offers a number of full-in-the blank or completely customizable options for writing your will. Despite the urge to skip right to the forms, the reader should take his or her time to read through the opening chapters to familiarize his/herself with the clauses, vocabulary, witness requirements, and potential pitfalls of drafting and finalizing a will. There are dozens of tables scattered throughout the book which break down the laws in every state, showing which are community property vs. not, which recognize civil unions, which have specific legal provisions, and so on.

This book is worth every penny and no adult should be without a legal, binding will. This book will show you how to draft your will in a matter of hours and at a cost of $37.

The Paranoid's Pocket Guide is a quick and easy read, and Tuttle should be congratulated for both her in-depth research into matters of trivial paranoia and her clever presentation of same. Besides the straightforward presentation of factual statements, generally one to four on a page, Tuttle has a stream-of-consciousness list of basic paranoid fears running in a continuous line along the bottom of every page.

Tuttle's Guide is more about clever presentation than it is about clever writing, but she gets full marks for creating an interesting book which is both informative and fun. And terrifying. I dare you to read it without suffering at least a few jarring re-evaluations of the world around you.

Hilarious, but spooky. Genius.

This book sits in a conspicuous semi-hidden drawer in my living room coffee table. I'm always hoping someone will open the drawer and start reading it... I think they would become completely engrossed, but would also start looking out the corner of their eyes for what might get them! Some of MY friends might break out in a cold sweat, throw down the book and go running out the door!

The pages of the book are multi-dimensional... it is designed to "trip you out." The little factoids come in fonts of multiple sizes, which is not really similar to ransom notes clipped from newspapers but elicits the same type of feeling. One of the best things about the book are the photos... even everyday objects like sponges and treadmills are made to look like fearsome devices of evil... and the captions to the pictures help. Offset well below the image as if to stand it's distance, the caption speaks out as if to whisper the name of the object in the simplest possible way: [ A SPONGE ]. Heh.

There is also what appears to be the ramblings of a hyper-paranoid person scrawled along the bottom of the pages. You have to read the book twice... once to follow that rambling from cover to cover, and once to read all the factoids. But when you are reading the factoids, you sometimes get a glimpse of the rambling. The oddness of it adds to the whole creepiness of the book.

The atmosphere of the book is similar in some respects to what a crazed private-eye type, or government agent type, would write.

Shave the Whales is another Dilbert masterpiece! These strips were in the older Dilbert days, so there were more comics with just Dilbert and Dogbert. However, the pointy-haired boss started becoming more of a character, and some office jokes are featured. It is a great book for any Dilbert fan! It is filled with wit, humor, and incompetent management. A wonderful book!

I have never been disappointed with anything written by Scott Adams and this is no exception. This is a collection of some of the older strips featuring our office hero Dilbert dishing out some sarcasm and much-loved puns. If you are a Dilbert fan like I am, this is a must have for your collection. I laughed hysterically and then laughed some more; I shared it with my friends and they laughed; then I silently cheered as Dilbert sticks it to the PHB as all of us wish we could. Hats off to Scott!

While this is the 4th Dilbert book, it is the 2nd book of strips from the newspaper, following "Always Postpone Meetings With Time-Wasting Mornons". The strips in this book are from the end of 1989 through mid-1990. Some characters of note introduced in this book are the Garbage Man (who is a member of MENSA) and Ratbert. Also, the famous fictional country of Elbonia makes it's first appearance. People will see characters that look a lot like Wally but aren't called that as Wally wasn't established yet. The humor picks up with more business related strips and the artwork tightens up a bit. A good book for laughs and light reading.

Even if you're not single, there is remarkable charm and understanding in this little book about being a woman in what is STILL a remarkably marriage-obsessed society. It is a pleasure and a comfort to take part in poking fun of this reality. As ever, Author Rachel Carpenter's intellectual, dry wit comes through even in the context of the whimsical simplicity of the book. Anyone--male or female--who has ever actively looked for a life partner and consistently failed at doing so (in other words, everyone, right?) will gobble up these modern words of wisdom.

Even if you never looked for a partner you know someone who has offered you the perfect advice for finding a mate. I took the book to work and everyone enjoyed it and subsequently shared stories from their own experiences. Even the men loved it! They said it was fun to see us poke fun at ourselves.

A friend of mine had this book sitting on her coffee table and I opened it up and couldn't put it down. This is one of the funniest parodies I've seen in years. I was laughing out loud from beginning to end. Just when I thought I had the whole thing figured out, Carpenter would come up with another unexpected and delightfully amusing twist. I've bought four and am giving them as Valentine's gifts. Even my mother (married for 50 years!) loves it. Does anyone know who Rachel Carpenter is? Has she written other stuff? I searched her name on amazon and couldn't find other books but I'd sure love to read a novel if she's got one. Wow!

This is an inspirational book, from the cover shot of Tiptoe Through the Tulips through the painted cars, the assemblage cars, and the more mutated vehicles. Art Cars are a strangely friendly version of Folk Art. Don't they put a smile onto your face when you see one driving past?

The earlier Harrod Blank book, Wild Wheels, ties in with the Wild Wheels movie on art cars, and this one is a continuation of that book with newer art cars and some helpful construction tips for your own art car.

This small book is a delight. Very imaginative. The authors have taken a clever approach to inventing new words. Take an existing word; add, eliminate, or change ONE letter. Then provide a new definition that has some relationship to the original word. As an example, here is one that I invented myself: kinkdom: A geopolitical jurisdiction populated by sexual deviants.

Makes a really fun gift!

The premise of this book is the following:

Step 1: Make up tons of portmanteaux.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Comedy gold!

I don't know about anyone else, but this seems a weak foundation, and I did not find the execution particularly amusing.

On the other hand, I adore the design and typography. That alone yields three stars, because I am an obsessive æsthete.

When it comes to humour, there is no one who could pack a more powerful punch than Erma Bombeck. In this collection of essays, Erma tackles children, motherhood, fatherhood, neighbours, family gatherings and then finds the humour in life's most ordinary events. Five days before her passing, Erma wrote her final message and still, she faced life with amazing courage and wit.

As the years pass by, we still miss Erma deeply. She became a part of our own family and mothers could read her words of wisdom and come to the conclusion, "It puts my mind as ease to know that I am not the only one who fells this way about...."

Erma was a lady ahead of her time and a primary lesson we learn from her is "don't fret the small stuff; look at each day as a new experience and enjoy it to the fullest. Soon, our children will leave the nest; we will grow older and develop wrinkles but become more tolerant and accepting of ourselves. Even in her last days, she managed to find the beauty and humour in life...what better legacy could she leave us? The book, like Erma, is deserving of a thousand twinkling stars. No wonder the Heavens shine so brightly.

This third installment of "Garfield" features the introduction of Nermal, the introduction of Jon's family ("Eat! Eat! Eat!"), Garfield's National Fat Week, and the more "truthful" side of Irma. Lyman also appears, but he becomes less prevalent as the days go by. A certain must-read for all Garfield fans.

Is Jim Davis trying to pull a George Lucas on us? All of these re-released full-color books are missing the final page of the original release books.

This re-release Third Book (Bigger Than Life) is missing the "Garfield Up Close And Personal" special page that was the final page of the original release.

It would be a shame to have the special comic lost to time. Luckily I have all the originals.

Normally I should give a 1-Star rating to show my displeasure with the missing content of this release. However, I simply can't bring myself to give a poor rating to a Garfield book.

Gotta love Garfield the cat. He says things that a lot of us don't have the guts to say. He is lazy, loves to sleep although I think eating outweighs his love for sleep even more, doesn't enjoy getting physical exams, and enjoys abusing the family dog. As hysterically funny as the first two Garfield books are, I really think that "Bigger Than Life" takes Garfield to a whole new level of laziness and gluttony. The animation is a lot better as well. Here the reader is introduced to the world's cutest (and annoying) kitten Nermal. Originally Nermal belonged to Jon's parents however over the years, Jim Davis just had Nermal drop in unexpectedly. The early drawings of Nermal was just as crude as the early Garfield drawings were. One of the greatest moments in this book was when Garfield sneezed and Jon's breakfast ended up on his face. The other greatest moment that I still love is when Jon leaves the house to go jogging, and Garfield finds a loose thread. Garfield pulls it until...well, Jon returns home unepxectedly in his birthday suit. An absolutely priceless moment for me. I also thought when Garfield caught a code was hilarious.
Whenever I feel down, I know I can always count on Garfield making me laugh with his antics.

Garfield is great! I love his books, I want my mom and dad to get the newspaper every day just so I can get more Garfield! In his third book Jim Davis' illustrations are at their best. Also I am just bummed that the Garfield books are finally on color. Odie is my favorite character.

Although his first two books are good, this book is better and I would consider this to be Garfield's best book of the pre-'82 era. I like the part when Garfield scratches on Jon's chair and Nermal got blamed for it, that was hilarious, if you're a Garfield fan then you can't go wrong getting this book and be sure not to let your cat do what Garfield does otherwise there will be a lot hell to pay.
