Charming book for the Peanuts lover, or the lover of oneReview Date: 2003-02-12
While not nearly as big or as long as "Peanuts Christmas," this short book has all of the heart and charm of everything Charles Schulz ever touched. All of your favorite Valentine-related strips are in here -- Snoopy's mountains of cards, Schroeder defending a Valentine-less Charlie Brown, and of course, laments for the Little Red-Haired Girl. Worth buying if you're a Peanuts fan or if you're in love with one. And I certainly hope this series continues -- let's see a "Peanuts Halloween" this fall!

Not just for art teachers!Review Date: 2006-02-18
Clear ideas and methods for utilizing a variety of hands-on techniques. The book is intended for children but is more suited to adults, specifically those who teach children.
Teachers! Parents! This is the best resource for Art!Review Date: 2000-03-09
for example --
Murals and Ballads - telling a story: Diego Rivera and E.B.White
Each poet and artist is given an interesting, child-friendly biography. There is a section called "making the connection," which guides the children through the theme to note the ways different artist/poets chose to express their vision. Last, but not least, each theme has a motivating writing and art project to go with it. In a world where less and less art, and less and less innovation are being supported in the schools, this is an ideal resource. It is a tool a teacher can fit into the day easily. It could provide a terrific substitute for a language handout or homework project.
Parents will find this a wonderful gift for their literary and artistic teenagers as well.

For Porchers Across the CountryReview Date: 2003-11-15
great coffee table bookReview Date: 2003-10-16
Dr. Buchino's musings on the leisurely activity are well orchestrated throughout "Porching." No, he's not advocating sloth. Rather, he's meerly encouraging you to rethink the best way to spend the limited number of heartbeats you have left. And in a light-hearted, witty way.
Buchino lends his advice on why you should porch, porching and love, and the overall medical soundness of porching. Quotes like "I porch, therefore I am" should inspire you to go out on your porch and nap the afternoon away.
The good doctor's brother, another Dr. Buchino, has provided more than 20 vivid photographs of porches, stoops, gazebos, etc. from around the country.
Kathy Finnegan's illustrations are the perfect compliment to the humorous text.
Overall, it's a wonderful comentary. For the $20 price tag (even better when discounted), it's a great book to leave on your coffee table (I've had several guests flip through it and smile since I got my copy in September). It also makes a great gift for Christmas, Chanukah, Fathers Day, or birthdays.

REBELS IN THE TIME OF THE RISE OF CAPITALISMReview Date: 2007-08-14
Professor Hobsbawn divided his study into two basic parts. The agrarian response, particularly in heavily agrarian Southern Europe, and the urban response, particularly in the small towns of Northern Europe, where capitalist development gained a huge foothold. Although there are some similarities in the response of both components local conditions such as tradition, geography and custom played a key role in whether the response became an organized one or faded in the onslaught. To that end he touches upon the history of social banditry and millennialism in the agrarian milieu and the strong pull of anarchism especially in Spain on the other. His case study on peasant anarchism in the period of the Spanish Civil War is worth the attention of Marxists in order to buttress the case for why anarchism's political response (or, better, non-political response) was totally inadequate in the face of the necessity of taking state power in order to defeat Franco.
The strongest part of the book is in his study of the urban plebians, their rituals and their revolutionary organizations. Here the theories and practice of the great 19th century revolutionary Louis Blanqui and his followers draws Hobsbawn's interest. Even stronger is his study of the relationship between religion, mainly of the non-conforming sort, and the development of the organized labor movement in Britain. This work goes a long way to explaining why the British labor movement was stalled, and still is stalled, in its tracks. In the end, however, the great lesson to be drawn from this work concerns today. I would ask where are the pockets of resistance to late capitalism comparable to those that emerged under early capitalism and how will those rebels response to the effects of `globalization' of the capitalist mode of production. We await our chronicler of that subject.
Dissent and FreedomReview Date: 2002-04-25
Its width and scope such as comes only from historical analysis infuses new ideas into the analysis of dissent always a quest for freedom.
It draws away the analysis from revolutions that above all else is celebratory of ideology to forms of dissent that are as much as liberating, if not manifesting a deeper consciousness of the dissent-freedom nexus that underlies all revolutions.
