Charming book for the Peanuts lover, or the lover of one
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-12
This brief collection, like the "Peanuts Christmas" book released a few months ago, takes Peanuts highlights centered around the chosen holiday and presents them in quite a nice format.

While not nearly as big or as long as "Peanuts Christmas," this short book has all of the heart and charm of everything Charles Schulz ever touched. All of your favorite Valentine-related strips are in here -- Snoopy's mountains of cards, Schroeder defending a Valentine-less Charlie Brown, and of course, laments for the Little Red-Haired Girl. Worth buying if you're a Peanuts fan or if you're in love with one. And I certainly hope this series continues -- let's see a "Peanuts Halloween" this fall!

I'm a big Peanuts fan so this was a must-buy for me. It's a great collection of Valentine's day strips spanning almost 50 years. You can see how the characters' images have changed through the time. The simple truths they say about love are simply adorable. This book is great as a collectible or as a gift to someone special.

Dr. Christianson approaches seemingly (in my mind) totally seperate topics and demonstrates how giving was influenced by contemporary literature and actually fed a class system in very many ways still in place today.

Well written and thought provoking

Dr. Christianson does a great job of showing the relationship philanthropy and literature played in both England and America. A great read for the intellectual and neophyte alike.

Outstanding Look at Children's Art
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-30
Who said children can't be artists? This book demonstrates the delightful variety of children's art around the world. But more, it is sociology, in which the art is placed in the cultural context in which it was made. How different are the artistic expressions from children across the globe. It sets the bar for future publications relating to children's art. We loved this book, as a reference, as an interesting coffee table book, as a compact study of diversity and commonality.

What the world needs now...

Review Date: 2002-05-23
Through the imaginations and dreams of children around the world, Tracy Spates has helped articulate the real promise of globalization--not an ecomonic or cultural amalgamation, but the truth and beauty of children making art: a wonderful diversity of myths and individual visions, the unique play of techniques and cultural icons in a world of rapidly converging imagery. This book teaches. This book celebrates. This book heals. "Children's Art Around the Globe" belongs in every household and, more importantly, in every classroom in the world.

Beautiful book with excellent examples for linking art and literacy.
Clear ideas and methods for utilizing a variety of hands-on techniques. The book is intended for children but is more suited to adults, specifically those who teach children.

Teachers! Parents! This is the best resource for Art!

This is the book to use if you want to help children see and participate in the creative process. I bought my first copy several years ago, when I was teaching in a one-room school house. It inspired kids from the 1st to the 8th grade. The examples of the artist's work are well-chosen, and the art and page layout is beautiful. The content is presented in comfortable thematic chunks just right for a few days work in the classroom, or an afternoon at home. It is multicultural and thematic.

for example --

Murals and Ballads - telling a story: Diego Rivera and E.B.White

Each poet and artist is given an interesting, child-friendly biography. There is a section called "making the connection," which guides the children through the theme to note the ways different artist/poets chose to express their vision. Last, but not least, each theme has a motivating writing and art project to go with it. In a world where less and less art, and less and less innovation are being supported in the schools, this is an ideal resource. It is a tool a teacher can fit into the day easily. It could provide a terrific substitute for a language handout or homework project.

Parents will find this a wonderful gift for their literary and artistic teenagers as well.

Ed Lordan captures many insights into political humor which are applicable to modern everday life. For example, in the preface alone, I learned Julius Caesar maintained an "Enemy List" (p. x, upper middle cartoon). I have been on such a list, and it is also seemingly carved in stone. Ironically, my list maker and local demagogue publicly advocates the strategies of Julius Caesar. Now if I only knew when Brutus will be making his appearance!

I found this humourous look at "porching" to be very witty and informative. Who knew America's Favorite Pastime has been documented throughout history, back to the ancient Romans and Greeks? The photography is spectacular; a documentation of porching in its own right. Porching, according to the author, influences every aspect of life, from courting to relaxing to managing family relationships. I have never read a more enjoyable book on the subject. This is truly a book for everyone to relish, young and old, while doing what Americans enjoy most: porching.

Anyone who has ever stepped out onto a porch to eat an icecream cone and with good company is going to enjoy this book.

Dr. Buchino's musings on the leisurely activity are well orchestrated throughout "Porching." No, he's not advocating sloth. Rather, he's meerly encouraging you to rethink the best way to spend the limited number of heartbeats you have left. And in a light-hearted, witty way.

Buchino lends his advice on why you should porch, porching and love, and the overall medical soundness of porching. Quotes like "I porch, therefore I am" should inspire you to go out on your porch and nap the afternoon away.

The good doctor's brother, another Dr. Buchino, has provided more than 20 vivid photographs of porches, stoops, gazebos, etc. from around the country.

Kathy Finnegan's illustrations are the perfect compliment to the humorous text.

Overall, it's a wonderful comentary. For the $20 price tag (even better when discounted), it's a great book to leave on your coffee table (I've had several guests flip through it and smile since I got my copy in September). It also makes a great gift for Christmas, Chanukah, Fathers Day, or birthdays.

REBELS IN THE TIME OF THE RISE OF CAPITALISM
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-14
The recently deceased British historian E.J. Hobsbawn, notwithstanding his unrepentant Stalinism to the end, wrote many interesting historical studies in his very long career. The book under review, Primitive Rebels, was an early effort to trace the sociological roots of rebellion in the period of the rise of capitalism. We all know that the development of the capitalist mode of production as it started in Europe was both a long and uneven process. The way various sections of the poor in European society, mainly rural and small town workers, responded and adjusted to its demands is the core of this study. Not all resistance movements of the time led naturally to the three great political movements that defined the plebian respond to early capitalism-socialism, communism and anarchism- but those are the ones that drew masses of people around their programs and this is the focus of this work.

Professor Hobsbawn divided his study into two basic parts. The agrarian response, particularly in heavily agrarian Southern Europe, and the urban response, particularly in the small towns of Northern Europe, where capitalist development gained a huge foothold. Although there are some similarities in the response of both components local conditions such as tradition, geography and custom played a key role in whether the response became an organized one or faded in the onslaught. To that end he touches upon the history of social banditry and millennialism in the agrarian milieu and the strong pull of anarchism especially in Spain on the other. His case study on peasant anarchism in the period of the Spanish Civil War is worth the attention of Marxists in order to buttress the case for why anarchism's political response (or, better, non-political response) was totally inadequate in the face of the necessity of taking state power in order to defeat Franco.

The strongest part of the book is in his study of the urban plebians, their rituals and their revolutionary organizations. Here the theories and practice of the great 19th century revolutionary Louis Blanqui and his followers draws Hobsbawn's interest. Even stronger is his study of the relationship between religion, mainly of the non-conforming sort, and the development of the organized labor movement in Britain. This work goes a long way to explaining why the British labor movement was stalled, and still is stalled, in its tracks. In the end, however, the great lesson to be drawn from this work concerns today. I would ask where are the pockets of resistance to late capitalism comparable to those that emerged under early capitalism and how will those rebels response to the effects of `globalization' of the capitalist mode of production. We await our chronicler of that subject.

Dissent and Freedom

It provides a new perspective toward the understanding of dissent that is contrapuntal to mainstream discourse that until then either demonized or pathologised dissent.

Its width and scope such as comes only from historical analysis infuses new ideas into the analysis of dissent always a quest for freedom.

It draws away the analysis from revolutions that above all else is celebratory of ideology to forms of dissent that are as much as liberating, if not manifesting a deeper consciousness of the dissent-freedom nexus that underlies all revolutions.

I've said it before (this would three times now on Amazon ;)) and I'll say it again: PvP is a wonderful comic strip! If you're an 80's child, gaming nerd, or even just a fan of well produced and genuinely funny comics...you should find a lot to like here. This is another wonderful collection of great strips. If you're followed the comic online, you may run into some storylines that you've gone through before. Personally, I think I've enjoyed reading through them again in the collected format more than I did getting the daily "zing!" comics (not to say that I don't still read it online...). This collection features some great in-jokes that comic book (I'm talking the guys and gals in tights who throw cars variety) and SciFi/Fantasy fans should really enjoy when the cast attempts to make the ultimate FAN FILM. Cat fans (especially those like my wife) will love Scratch Fury the cat.
