I am a tremendous fan of Garfield, and own and have read the first 32. And make no mistake. I well read 33. And, I certainly do have favourites. SWALLOWS is not my favourite but is certainly one of them, because of the story about Garfield and Odie running away to join the circus, a well thought out, fantastically funny and clever bit.

Funny, and hilarious and has some parts that weren't in the TV show. Something any Grafield lover would like to read the night before Thanksgiving. That's exactly what I do. It's fun and very colorful. Jon really comes up with some wierd substitutes for some of the things he bakes. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I bought this book about ten years ago and it is nearly worn out. I had never heard of Irma Bombeck back when I purchased this book and I thought the American humour might not suit me (I'm an Aussie). I was soon to fall in love with Irma's wit and observations. It is a funny and painfully honest look at life in suburbia. If this book doesn't get you smiling....see your doctor!

Excuse any typos....I'm still laughing after 10 years

Yes, it's been ten years since I read it (I have the original version with the white cover and Erma mowing the lawn). I still laugh at the thought of some parts of it. Erma, I love you, I miss you, and I wish you could send us columns from heaven. About the book: you must read it and you will find something to relate to in it. Even though it has a 1970's tone (pre-microwaves and cell phones) you can still relate to it and laugh with it. Get it, and any other Bombeck Book you can snatch.

Beautiful book preserves magic of carousel history and art

As a lover of carousels, history, and books, I was captivated by Tobin Fraley's presentation of American carousel art. This book is lovely to look at, richly illustrated with all kinds of carousel animal photographs as well as historical photos and memorabilia about carousels and carousel carvers. I liked how the book was divided, chronologically outlining carousel manufacturers and master carvers. Each carver had a different style ("the eyes of a Zalar horse always have a certain sadness to them" and"Charles Carmel captured a whimsical element that no other carver could match.") and this book does a great job of showing off these masters' beautiful work and individuality. If you're looking for a book that visually captures the fantasy and beauty of carousel animals while providing a highly interesting dose of American history, this book is for you.

A great addition to your carousel book collection

This is an easy to buy, easy to read and easy to look at book on carousels. It is filled with wonderful full color pictures and a great written history of the carousel. If you enjoy looking at carousels, you will adore reading this book.

I recently saw green men, on a trip to England, and thought I would learn a little about them and possibly try my hand at chip carving. The Green Man, by Kathleen Basford, was consice, well written, gave history, and many picture plates of dated works. A treasure!

Groundbreaking Book for Green Man Enthusiasts

This books holds a reputation as one of the seminal publications in modern Green Man research, and rightly so. There is little copy in the book save a few pages in the beginning outlining the myth as understood at the time of publication, but where it speaks most loudly is in the photographs. Beautiful black and white pictures from all over Europe capture the broad variety of ways that the Green Man has been depicted through the centuries.

Green Man fans must own this book!

Hagar: Room For One More (Hagar The Horrible)

More misadventures of my favorite Viking
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-12
This 4"x7" paperback book is a collection of Hägar the Horrible comics by the incomparable Dik Browne (1917-89). Here in this book are many adventures of Hägar, his friend Lucky Eddie, his formidable wife Helga, his beautify though self-conscious daughter Honi, his bookish son Hamlet, his ever-relaxed dog Snert, and Hägar's less than competent crew. In this book, Hägar must face an evil magician, a Scottish curse, and repeated (rather unsuccessful) attempts to educate both Hamlet and Snert

Recently, while digging through an old box full of books, I came across several of my treasured Hägar books, of which this is one. My children (girl eleven, boy eight) grabbed it away from me, and were soon happily reading the jokes out loud to all present. It is so nice to see that Hägar can entrance the young of today, much as he did me. My children and I agree that the best cartoon in this book is when Hägar shows Hamlet how to skip stones, bouncing them off a rock in the center of the lake (the underwater dragon rubs his head and says "Hägar's back!"). My wife enjoyed Helga's further schooling of Honi (no spoilers this time!).

We all love this book, and you will too. If you can get it, then do so!

An insightive work into ancient Nordic bathtime and leisure.

Years of archeological study has prepared me to answer that Dik Browne's insights into this ancient culture has turned the current theories into ancient Viking life on it's head.

It was thought of by revisionist historians for the longest time that vikings did not wear horned helmets or waged war at every opportunity. This latest work shows proof that these ancestrial beserkers did, in fact, do all this and more.

New evidence has been brought to life that these people had a complex family life, enjoyed food and drink in large quantities, and had managed to domesticate the common Duck as well as the familiar canines.

Brownes work is based upon the preserved record of an ancient family as kept by the eldest son. Brownes magnificent rendering of this family group includes the patriarch, Hagar; his wife, Helga; their daughter and son, pets, mother-in-law, and Hagar's best friend, Lucky.

As both a historian and an archeoligist, I highly recommend this study to any of my colleages. Huzzah!

Excellent images and words

I borrowed this from our library, having seen the Rivers and Tides video and purchased "A Collaboration with Nature." The reason I like this particular edition better is that there are many essays and a lot of reference and bilbiographical material in this one. "Collaboration" is almost 100% images (and excellent ones they are) but this volume gives a lot more insight into his methods, and the amazing range of his work. Ideally, I would recommend both books.
Keep in mind too that
Disclaimer: I haven't yet seen the "single-word" titled series published in the 00s, but I'm eager to see what he's been up to since 1990 (when this volume was published) and 2001 (when Rivers and Tides was released.)

If you don't have one of his books you should.

If you've ever wondered at the line " I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree." Andy Goldsworthy can help. His sculptures created from nature (ferns, ice, poppy petals, etc.) are some of the most breathtaking compositions I have ever seen. This is a grteat primer book on him. It has a little of all his work from his "holes" to "arches". While not as lush and detailed as some of his other books, they are usually more focused and take a specific angle on his work. (eg. wood, stone, arches) This book is rich with information though, and a great grab bag of his work. Buy this book, find out what you like and buy more. I promise you wont be dissapointed.

I bought this book as a gift for my father, who has been carving decoys for many years and taking classes with some of the local experts around the Chesapeake Bay area. When he brought the book to class the instructor had to borrow it for a week to read! It is not necessarily a book for beginners, but if you are serious about the craft, it is a top notch reference book.
