This bilingual collection of Nerudas poetry is an outstanding selection. Neruda is the great one of Latin American poetry.
New Directions has for years provided us with quality bilingual collections of great world poets. Plenos Poderes (Fully Empowered)
is another classic. Neruda continuously made impassioned pleas for his people. He was a great lover of his land and his
people. He was a true revolutionary poet in the vein of Lorca. This collection was published in 1962 (nine years before
he was justly awarded the Nobel Prize.) Here Neruda states his mission in a poem like The Poets Obligation: He will give
voice to those who have no voice. He will speak for the downtrodden. The imagery of the sea is scintillating. The poem
Fully Empowered also backs this stand. But amid the political stuff there are some beautiful lyric poems as well. To Sorrow
is a gorgeous poem. Short pieces like It is Born reflect a deeply sensitive poet. This is classic Neruda. Viva Pablo
Neruda!

I loved this book. Being one of the earlier books in the Garfield collection Jim Davis had many fresh ideas to work with.
You may be surprized that Garfield looks slightly different , but the attitude stays the same. If you want to see Garfield
very different, see fat cat 3-pack number one. If you love Garfield, This is a must have.
This book features: Mondays, The caped Avenger, The fence, Nermal, Odie, and of course Garfields sick addiction to food .
Enjoy!
If you liked this one I reccomend Fat Cat 3 pack: 4, 5, and 7.

This book is humor way off reality. Do you know Garfield hates spiders? When he kills a spider, Jon open his newspaper, magazine, etc, and
find a HUGE imprint of the spider! That's all for now. BYE!
This fat cat has so many laughs, even Garfield isn't hungry.

at all. Not that they werent funny but i noticed that on Jim davis's first books he was kind of new to drawing Gar field so
he improved a lot on the humor. I love this book from the cover all the way to the last page good job Jim.5 stars outa 5!!!!!!!

I am a tremendous fan of Garfield, and own and have read the first 32. And make no mistake. I well read 33. And, I certainly
do have favourites. SWALLOWS is not my favourite but is certainly one of them, because of the story about Garfield and
Odie running away to join the circus, a well thought out, fantastically funny and clever bit.

Funny, and hilarious and has some parts that weren't in the TV show. Something any Grafield lover would like to read the night
before Thanksgiving. That's exactly what I do. It's fun and very colorful. Jon really comes up with some wierd substitutes
for some of the things he bakes. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I bought this book about ten years ago and it is nearly worn out. I had never heard of Irma Bombeck back when I purchased
this book and I thought the American humour might not suit me (I'm an Aussie). I was soon to fall in love with Irma's wit
and observations. It is a funny and painfully honest look at life in suburbia. If this book doesn't get you smiling....see
your doctor!
Excuse any typos....I'm still laughing after 10 years

Yes, it's been ten years since I read it (I have the original version with the white cover and Erma mowing the lawn). I
still laugh at the thought of some parts of it. Erma, I love you, I miss you, and I wish you could send us columns from
heaven. About the book: you must read it and you will find something to relate to in it. Even though it has a 1970's tone
(pre-microwaves and cell phones) you can still relate to it and laugh with it. Get it, and any other Bombeck Book you can
snatch.

As a lover of carousels, history, and books, I was captivated by Tobin Fraley's presentation of American carousel art. This
book is lovely to look at, richly illustrated with all kinds of carousel animal photographs as well as historical photos
and memorabilia about carousels and carousel carvers. I liked how the book was divided, chronologically outlining carousel
manufacturers and master carvers. Each carver had a different style ("the eyes of a Zalar horse always have a certain sadness
to them" and"Charles Carmel captured a whimsical element that no other carver could match.") and this book does a great
job of showing off these masters' beautiful work and individuality. If you're looking for a book that visually captures
the fantasy and beauty of carousel animals while providing a highly interesting dose of American history, this book is for
you.
A great addition to your carousel book collection

and a great written history of the carousel. If you enjoy looking at carousels, you will adore reading this book.

Overall, I found Neruda's voice in this book to echo that of United States poet Walt Whitman (who could be seen as one of Neruda's 19th century poetic "ancestors"). Neruda's attentive poetic eye looks at both humanity and nature with reverence and compassion. His voice is often very tender. Like Whitman did in his work, Neruda often writes in the first person in this book.
Some of the most memorable selections in this book include "To Don Asterio Alarcon, Clocksmith of Valparaiso," in which Neruda finds dignity and transcendence in the work of the title figure; "Thistle," in which he celebrates "the blue thistle of Chile"; and "The People," a passionate tribute to all the working people of the world.
In "Summary," Neruda writes, ". . . my life was always / singing its way between joy and obligation." "Fully Empowered" marvelously embodies both Neruda's sense of moral duty and the joy that proceeds from his life's work.
