Wonderfully informative little volume with comprehensive history of the NYC Lions, their controversial early days and total
adoption into New Yorkers' hearts. Great photos and hilarious cartoons are included. When I leave it flat on a bookcase
or table, it gets inevitable comments from guests who enjoy it as much as I do. Recommended for any cat love or bibliophile
in general.

I recommend that any fan of William Blake buy this volume and the other 5 in the series. The books are beautiful, large, and
handsomely bound. Each book is reproduced in full color, using a six-color printing process rather than the standard four.
The pages are heavy, opaque and have a gorgous lustre indicating very high quality paper. The text of each book accompanies
the color reproductions in standard typeface with very competent commentary to boot.

These three works in some ways develop the characters Blake used in the three Continental Prophecies. But don't expect any
kind of coherent development or to be able to fathom out any kind of understandable timeline. This is Blake after all. Most
of this book is helpful introduction, commentary, notes, and supplementary materials.
"The First Book of Urizen" is the longest of the three and the most illustrated. It has images that are absolutely unforgettable. They have a power and emotional impact that holds the viewer. I have met people who find them repulsive. I think the emotional impact makes them uncomfortable so they want to get away from the images and so push them away.
"The Book of Ahania" and "The Book of Los" are much shorter and the illustrations are limited to the title page and the last plate ("The Book of Los" also has an illustration on the opening page of text.). The other pages are done in particularly fine Blake script.
As with the rest of the volumes in this series the quality of reproduction is very high and these images are delightful to study. The scholarship is quite good and the writing is focused on opening these works up to the general reader - at least a general reader who enjoys studying Blake and is willing to put in the time it takes to fathom these rather wonderfully strange works. A treasure for the shelf of any Blake lover.

Great Stories for All Ages

Several junior high and high school teachers have written to me because of my review of Into the Widening World, edited by
John Loughery and published by Persea Boos. I mentioned in my review that I use that book for my university course in International
Short Stories. I am not sure that is the best choice for younger readers, or for schools with strong guidance from the PTA
and the school board. Those stories are live and startling because they often challenge taboos. This book, on the other
hand, provides a group of stories by some of the same excellent writers, all of them of a high artistic achievement, that
might be more age appropriate for junior high and high school students.
Make no mistake, they are not kid's stories--they're about children. But they pick up a rhythm and simplicity of execution from the generally accepted nature of children's stories. You won't find a bad one among them. And what a wonderful exposure to international writing. I used this one in my college class to kick off a semester's study of fiction from around the world, and my students really loved it. So do I. That story "Hands" is as good as anything you could find in any collection, as is "The French Lesson." If you want a quick glimpse into this book, start with these. You'll read the rest.

The author of the SLJ review is wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. A cretin, really. This collection is remarkably consistent.
The writing is quite fine and the stories, often relatively obscure, offer a huge breadth of theme, tone and subject matter.
I've read many collections of this sort with an eye towards teaching them. This is by far the best. Both weak and strong
readers can find much to enjoy. All of these writers are top drawer, and these stories selected carefully to fall within
the understanding of young adults. This should be a standard text in all schools, libraries, etc.
Excellent starting point for understanding other cultures.

A Walk in My World provides teens with a starting point for understanding other cultures, with a series of short stories by
contemporary authors addressing the issues and concerns of teens around the world. From a Chilean boy's writings about his
parents' politics to a headstrong girl's alienation from her mother, these are moving stories packing in social as well
as cultural revelations.

A wonderful book, beautifully presented.
For various reasons, they don't make comic strips like this anymore. There is something magical and captivating about the world of the Willett's. Once you start reading, it's hard to put down.
It brings to life a long gone time and place. It's amazing how those little squiggles of characters can become so real. Wonderful art, and brilliant writing.
Anyone with even a passing interest in this, will NOT be disappointed.

I have been a collector of all things Skeezix for several decades. I have everything from Skeezix hankies, shoe boxes and
all of the Bisque Dolls from the 1930's. But the one thing that put them all together was Volume Three of Walt and Skeezix.
This edition has a very nice introduction to the many products that Frank King authorized to sell from his Gasoline Alley
family. This section is lavishly illustrated and helped me as a collector to see for the first time a catalogue of what
I have and what I don't have...yet.
The book also boasts the second most exciting event in Gasoline Alley history, the marriage of Uncle Walt. The illustrations are at their zenith and the stories are heart warming and true to life. This is the best of the three volumes.

Volume 3 of Walt and Skeezix is even better than volumes 1 and 2 and it's hard to get any better than the first two. And Walt
gets married and Skeezix gets a mom. So much happens and there is so much of King's wonderful art that this is a must.
Frank King must be one of America's two or three best story tellers and here he is in his prime. His characters are real people - not just comic strip characters. Walt actually lives! We'd all love to know someone like him. And the other members of the cast are also flesh and blood. This can't be said about any other comic strip. And that wonderful art!
For those that get "Gasoline Alley" fever there is another must - a gigantic 16 by 21 inch very heavy hardcover of selected early Sundays. Here you can absorb King's great art and color and the stories are just as great. It IS expensive but well worth the price. Any of the four volumes would be a wonderful gift foe the one you love or for some dear friends - or even yourself.

Very funny, very cute look at what happens when kids leave the nest. I loved the illustrations, very well done and the look
and feel of the book overall was pleasant.
I purchased this for my mother and she loved it. I laughed out loud at many of the pages myself. Highly recommended for parents and children alike. I look foward to a second volume. Keep them coming!

I'm the daughter of empty nest parents, and I can tell you that the observations Dr. Sundby made about "empty nest time" are
SO true! Did my mom call me a million times to "just check in" when I went away to college? You bet! And, yes, I did have
to walk her through setting up her new DVD player--on the telephone.
My dad always seemed to have business trips in "my neighborhood"--not that I minded, even though they were often two states away. The cartoons are great! In my freshman year, I received a care package almost as big as the one illustrated in the book--Kept my dorm floor afloat for a long time.
Although I've been away from home for a few years, I recently purchased the book for my folks. They loved it! Think this is a great book for kids to get their empty nest parents--it may. make life easier, not only for the parents, but for the kids too!"

"You Know You're an Empty Nester When..." is a delightful and amusing read for parents who are facing an empty nest in the
not too distant future. It has its poignant moments too. It's also a humorous look back for those who are "experienced" empty
nesters. I thoroughly enjoyed my journey down memory lane, often laughing out loud at both the sentiments expressed and the
cartoons. I recommend this book to all parents who will someday be empty nesters as well as those who are already empty nesters.
