Herman Classics: Volume 3 (Herman Classics series)Review Date: 2007-01-06
Timeless humor, laugh-out-loud funny!!!Review Date: 2005-11-09
I just purchased the Herman Classics Collections vol. 1, 2 and 3 (beautiful books, great print quality) and I hope that their are more on the way.
My recommendation to the publisher - publish a hardbound master collection at some point, something that would look nice on my bookshelves and something that I can pass along to my grandkids ("Gee, grandpa had a sense of humor!").
Classic humour, Great delivery!Review Date: 2005-12-13

Funniest Dave Barry book ever writtenReview Date: 2008-06-30
Thanks Dave -- finaly a guide to home buying I understand!Review Date: 2000-05-17
When I prepared to have a baby join our family, I turned to Dave Barry's "Baby's and other hazzards of sex" to help me make that adjustment.
Thank the maker that Dave was also there for me when we got ready to buy our first home!
If you are thinking about buying a home, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It explains that it doesn't really matter who all those people are who show up at the closing...but that it's your responsibility to keep writing out the checks as long as someone is in line.
There are hillariously practical tips to searching for, buying, and maintaining your home. Dave presents hints and suggestions that will help you to appear knowledgeable while looking at houses, how to get into serious debt, and even about challenges you will face while redecorating.
He even has the audacity to suggest that it's possible to redecorate "for under $650,000." Come on Dave! Everyone knows that's impossible!
And when you are all done fixing up, being worn down, and you are ready to sell your home, he also presents hints on how to fool someone into buying your "black hole."
Great stuff through and through! 5 stars for humor and real life applicability!

Wide-ranging and informativeReview Date: 2007-09-09
The cover image, "Female Nude with Green Shawl," starts to break the reader free from the easy stereotype of Kollwitz. It adds color to her commonly dark palette, and presents a simple celebration of womanly elegance. "Self-portrait laughing" and "Lovers" show that she could not only express joy, but depict different kinds of it. Woodcuts, etchings, charcoals, ink and wash, and wonderful pastels each display her drawing ability in different ways. "Tower of Mothers," "Mourning Parents," "Lovers," and other sculptures show her skill in bronze, granite, and plaster. Kollwitz's skills range far beyond what she's best known for, and this book helps us appreciate the breadth of that ability.
Given so many reproductions of her work, lovingly printed on bright, dense paper, a reader like me becomes easily distracted away from the helpful and informative text of the book. Three long essays, a catalog, timeline, and bibliography invite the reader to various kind of commentary, both in historical fact and in considered opinions. Her personal story as woman, mother, and artist as well as her work deserve attention; this gorgeous volume is a wonderful way to give her work and life some of the attention they deserve.

An Amazing, Infomative Book on the Life of a Dedicated ArtistReview Date: 2007-02-24
This book is one of the best. First of all, I didn't have to get out my German lexicon and second, the narratives that go along with the many pictures are full of detail that you don't get in the smaller books. One of the major improvements that you will see is in her work, "Woman with Dead Infant." In many books it appears that the woman's face is melting in to the child, but in Prelinger's narrative, you see much more detail of the nude, vulnerable woman and her child with little covering up his bones.
She has many works-- mostly lithographs-- in colour, which is a delight after havimg only seen her work in other books as black and white.
One of her works, "Man Kneeling before a Female Nude" shocked me by it's erotic overtones, just as "Self Portrait en face, Laughing" shocked me with it's joy.
Kollwitz was very much a versatile artist and this book shows that. Any fan of Kollwitz will appreciate the narratives that go with the pictures, and for anyone who isn't a fan-- this book will make them fans!

Way better than five stars!Review Date: 2003-04-29
But, when I received it, I was totally floored at the quality - hardcover, great paper, clear pictures, well-written instructions. It was so much better than I'd even anticipated.
This book was written for someone much younger than I am, but I found it completely entertaining, throughout. Very thorough "basics" section, including a look at making simple canes, then on to the projects. Lively and colorful from cover to cover.
Jazzy, upbeat writing, hip kids in artful demonstration, wonderful photography, lots of humor and cool fonts surround each of the thirty projects. There are beginner items to advanced - critters, jewelry, things to make for gifts, from simple to sophisticated - kids are going to absolutely love this book! And just in time to give to a young person before the appearance of "summer doldrums," too. :)
But, I don't think its appeal is limited to the 8-14 years-old age bracket because IMO, most adults would find it fun, too. I'd recommend this one to beginning clayers of any age.
Congratulations to Irene and her terrific editor for a fabulous, fun book!

Situations can make comedy and the differences in the U. S. population create many of themReview Date: 2007-10-31
Situations can make comedy and the wide differences in the citizenship of the United States create many different contexts for jokes. Many of those contexts are utilized in this book to make stories that illustrate some aspect of life in the U. S.

off in a hurry upon hearing the "friendly" woman call out to him, "Come on in honey,
and take your pants off!" The woman mistakenly thought that the mailman was her five-
year-old son returning from school. She discovered the truth when she went outside
looking for her son and discovered the mail scattered about the front scoop!
This embarrassing but funny tale is a 1983 excerpt from Reader's Digest's most
popular department and new book, "Life In These United States®." The first collection
of Life In These United States® was published in Reader's Digest in March of 1943.
Over the years, the department has become almost synonymous with the magazine, being
one of the first sections that readers turn to first. Now, Reader's Digest has assembled
some of the department's best selections from the past fifty years into the book, "Life In
These United States®." Inside the book you'll find true stories from people all across
America; funny, heartwarming, inspiring tales that will make you smile and think about
how we look at ourselves and the world around us. Although the contributors of the tales
come from different backgrounds and cultures, the stories that they share are ones that
we've all experienced (or are glad that we haven't!).
Pick up a copy of "Life In These United States®," put your feet up, and get ready to
spend an enjoyable hour or two reading! I know that I'll now chuckle every time that I
see the mailman!

Simply put, this book that convinced me Alice is a Talent with a capital "T". She starts with a lovely preface, "In keeping faith with Poetry's honest help to me, I have not deleted or changed--beyond a word or two--anything I have written, though greatly tempted at times to do so. The young self, the naive promiscuous self, appear doubly vulnerable now, in light of my unexpected bonus of years, and the experience they have brought me. I embrace them all, as Poetry embraced me..." From there, she follows with some beautiful, beautiful poetry, speaking to the struggle to develop and improve as an artist.
There are mis-steps, irritations. "There are no tigers/in Africa!/You say./Frowning./Yes. I say./Smiling./But they are/very beautiful." doesn't do much for me. I prefer my evocations of Africa without this almost Disney-esque gloss of "all cool primitive things we'll embrace as African."
Cumulatively, however--the poems are terrific. It's not often that I read through an entire volume of poetry without putting it down. Read this book for all its warts and missteps--and glory in it for its terrific human achievement.
