Fun With a Sheet of Paper

A clever Father's Day gift. I've made four airplanes, so far, and they all fly as promised. I'm looking for some wide open spaces with a launching hill and a slight breeze, then I can enjoy their true potential. The instructions are very easy to follow: grab--but don't wrinkle--a sheet of bond copy/typing paper, make mountain folds and valley folds, you'll see, have a ruler and pencil handy, and a sissors. A glue stick is called for from time to time--I didn't have one, so I used a small piece of scotch tape. Oh, yes, you can color them in a variety of patterns. Fun and educational (basic flight principles) and a great value at $7.95. And no, I am not related to the author nor a friend of the family.

This is a great introduction to paper airplanes for the novice. The models range in complexity from easy to difficult, providing a challenge for both kids and adults. Best of all is a brief comparison of each model with specific models of actual airplanes, and a brief primer on flight principles. Taken together, this book is a great lesson in aviation, as well as a lot of fun.

Brilliant Comedy!

Review Date: 2004-05-25
Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding were a pair of brilliant and all too little-known comedians who came out of the golden age of radio. Their comedy was quite simply an endless satire of radio broadcasting itself. Actually, "comedians" sounds two obvious for their deadpan, parodistic humor - I think perhaps "comic artists" is more approriate. Instead of telling jokes, this comedic duo performed little plays where humor is created through characterization, irony, and word-play. This is verbal wit and high comedy at its best. Bob and Ray were too subtle to ever become really popular, but they always had a small and devoted following. Their dry, offbeat humor is impossible to adequately describe - you have to experience it to understand it. This award-winning compilation comes from the twilight of their long career - the 1980's. These particular performances come from Bob and Ray's Public Radio Show, and were recorded in front of a live audience, which only adds to the fun. There are dozens of B & R sketches here, including numerous installments of their hilarious mock-soap opera, "Garish Summit". Many classic B & R characters make apperances. Buy these cassettes and be prepared to become delirious with laughter!

Bob and Ray's low-key humor is perfect for long drives. I have the four volumes of "The Best of Bob & Ray." Each volume has four audiocassettes, each audiocassette with two 30-minute shows that will keep you in stitches and make the miles fly. "Garish Summit" is without a doubt the greatest soap opera ever to make you laugh so hard your nose runs.Volume 1 will have you longing for Wing Po, Traveling Philosopher, to come by and read your woodpile.

I have the four volumes of "The Best of Bob & Ray," and this one is my favorite. The great classic routine "VCR Children" is on it as well as three others of what I think are their best routines: "Transatlantic Bridge," "South Quoddy Airlines," and the "Club of the Month Club." Can't explain it here--you'll just have to listen and laugh till your nose runs.

This is just one of those books that anyone involved in higher education needs to have. As a student of a university that is struggling with just how to reach out to our community, I would highly suggest it to anyone who wants to spend some time and reevaluate the relationship between institutions and communities.

Scholar hits the mark on higher ed outreach

David Maurrasse has produced a thoughtful study in his book which examines four rather different and distinct IHES (Institutions of Higher Education). By studying how each IHE serves its community, readers can get a good picture of the different approaches in use today. The IHEs--which include a state, an Ivy League, a private, and even a community college campus--serve as a fine set of baseline campuses for study.

Hostos is my particular concern, since I am a Dean at Hostos, and I am well versed in the challenges we face each day in serving our South Bronx community. I believe that Dr. Maurrasse has indeed hit the mark and hit it well in this study. I can, at least, verify his contextualizing of the Hostos mission and its community's needs. His method of becoming thoroughly familiar with the physical aspects of each campus and its history by closely interviewing members of the community as well as faculty, staff, administrators, and students is laudable. At Hostos I know he spoke to long-time stakeholders from the college community and the community at large.

The book should be challenging higher education policy makers to focus on improving community outreach strategic plans for years to come. IHEs can not afford to be percieved as "ivory towers."

Okay, so this little volume (number 4 in the Far Side series of collections) is "outdated." As far as I'm concerned, however, these cartoons are timeless! Bride of the Far Side is probably the best of Larson's works. How is this determined? In large part, it is the "Schmidt scale"... the percentage of Larson works found on the walls and doors of practicing scientists from a particular volume (cartoons used in lectures are added to this scale).

Remember these classics?

"And now Edgar's gone... Something's going on around here."

"Early vegetarians returning from the kill."

"Well, what the?... I THOUGHT I smelled something."

"Wait a minute! Isn't anyone here a real sheep?"

And my personal all-time favorite:

"Late again!... This better be good!"

Reading Bride Of The Far Side made me remember how great Gary Larson's daily dose mentally deranged cartoons were. I grew up reading his strip and boy do I miss him. In this collection of about two-hundred Far Sides, he carries on his tradition of good-natured insanity. Almost every cartoon in the book made me laugh, grin or at least go, "Eeeeewwww!" More than a few also made me stop and think. See, Larson is, in his better moments (which describes most of his moments) also a man of profound insight and deep thought. You have to keep your mind on its toes (yuck) to follow his punchlines. I do sincerely wish he'd make a return to the daily papers, or at least be more forthcoming with brand new material released in book form. I'd love to see that. Until the coming of that glorious day, I'll keep myself entertained with his '80's and '90's anthologies like Bride Of The Far Side, which is a truly awesome book!

A remarkably funny book.

Bride of The Far Side, the fourth in the Far Side series, is a must have for any true fan of The Far Side. Packed with 200 cartoons, this book is hilarious. I have read this book dozens of times over the years and it seems to grow funnier each and every time. All of the classic, warped animals and insects and bizarre human characters are contained in this collection. If you do not have this one in your Far Side collection yet then add it to your shopping cart right away. You will not be disappointed. It is truly a gem of a book.

This is a wonderfully fun book for little adventurers (and their parents too)! This large book contains fourteen two-page foldouts, approx. 14 inches high by 19 inches across, and each picture is packed with informative, and often humorous, images, labels and text, surrounded by a decorative border. The fourteen "maps and sketches of lost worlds and mysterious places" are: the Garden of Eden; Atlantis; Noah's Ark; the Tower of Babel; Ancient Egypt, depicting the construction of a necropolis for Ramses II; King Solomon's Mines; Homer's Odyssey; Man Against Woman, showing a gladiatorial combat between men and women that took place in Pompeii two days before it was destroyed by Vesuvius; the Seven Cities of Gold; Sherwood Forest inhabited by Robin Hood and his merry men; King Arthur and his knights; Genghis Khan and the Great Wall of China; Dracula's castle; and Conan Doyle's Dinosaur Island.

Each pre-folded out page has several paragraphs of explanatory text that are intriguing and funny. A flat magnifier is attached to the book by a ribbon. The end pages show maps, explorer's tools and silly photographs of the author on his treks, while the book cover looks like Prof. Al Lorenz's travel-worn satchel.

This is a fun concept-book, well-executed and a pleasure for readers (of any age) who are adventurers at heart.

A Comprehensive Overview of the Creating of Mount Rushmore

Mr. Smith's book gives the total picture of the dynamics that went into the creating of Mount Rushmore. Beyond just the unbelievable effort of the artist, Mr. Smith supplies us with the many other factors that make an effort such as this possible; support, funding, political, environmental, geography and most important, why the monument was created at this location. Then there are the lives of everyone associated with the project; from the artist to the lowest member of the many teams that are brought into the story to make the reader feel that they were there from the beginning to the completion. The author's inclusion of personal interviews with some of these people provides glimpses into rapidly fading history. The book was so compelling that I want to return to the Black Hills to see first hand all that I missed from lack of knowledge on by previous 3 visits. This is a must reading before visiting Mount Rushmore.

The Creation of a Monument

Review Date: 2006-12-18
The Carving of Mount Rushmore is, quite obviously, about the carving of Mount Rushmore. However, it is much more than this, because Smith discusses the creation of this national monument in the context of its time and through the eyes of the creators. Central to this story is the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, who was a man possessed by ambition and perfection. His is the name that is generally associated with the monument. However, there were many others who were central in the creation, including those in government, business and the actual men who worked on the carving. Each of these is placed very much in the context of the time and place.

If you have an interest in Mount Rushmore, this is a very worthwhile read.

Engrossing tale of how our Nationa Memorial came to be.

Smith writes an engrossing tale about how Doane Robinson decided it would be a good idea to have sculptures created in the Needles of the Black Hills to bring in tourists, and how eccentric carver Gutzon Borglum took his idea over. It is amazing that Mount Rushmore ever was carved, with everyone being most concerned about getting it done their way, and no one paying enough attention to whether or not there was enough money to get it done.

This collection of familiar Christmas carols reworked to a feline perspective is priceless. Laurie Loughlin writes with a deft touch and a wry understanding of the feline nature, as only a cat-lover can. The illustrations are hilarious and sweet.

I think my favorite is: "Oh Come All Ye Furful" -- it's not only very funny but perfectly captures cat-ness in lyrics such as:

Oh come all ye furful
Hungry and well-rested
Oh come ye, oh come ye
To the master bedroom

and

Meow, choirs of felines
Meow in expectation
Meow 'til you get your mom
And dad out of bed

Fun and funny feline versions of Christmas carols.

Think of Matt Groening as the Dante of modern childhood
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-06
After a while Bongo, the young rabbit that Matt Groening insists on drawing with ony one ear (I think the left one is right) really creeps me out after a while. I prefer to get my insolent wisdom from Binky or even Akbar and Jeff, but Bongo shows up in the fast majority of the 48 cartoons from Groening's syndicated "Life is Hell" comic circa 1983-1988. The actual "Childhood is Hell" maxi-series consists of 25 chapters specifically intended to teach kids about wising up before it is too late, starting with "Tips for Tots" and providing sage advise for being all you can be for kids at odd ages 1 (Wily) through 9 (Naughty), with 10 (Twisted) thrown in for good measure. There are also several one panel cartoons, including two that totally capture the Christmas spirit that parents will find useful at before and after the opening of presents (show the little kiddies that Santa is not the only one who knows exactly what they are thinking in their warped little minds). As is the case with the more famous Matt Groening creation, "The Simpsons," the sad truth is that "Childhood is Hell" is too good for those who are still experiencing that particular state of arrested development. But unlike Bart and company, Binky, Bongo, Sheba and the rest of the gang are all wallowing much more in the depth of despair. However, if you are actually part of the age group that is intended to benefit from the weird wisdom collected within these pages, do follow the instructions provided on the back cover: read this book under the covers late at night with a secret flashlight and a bowl of ice cream for nourishment. But even if your Mom does not catch you remember that childhood is hell and none of us get out of it alive.

Expression and Musical Precepts of 18th Century Classic Music
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-26
From Preface:

"The music of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven and their contemporaries has a familiar and friendly ring. It speaks to us clearly and directly. We are moved by the power of eloquence of its masterpieces, and we delight in the trimness and fluency of its minor works.

Much has been written about this music and its makers. Library shelves are crowded with histories, biographies, surveys, bibliography and gesture studies. Yet something eludes us among this extensive literature; that is, a full-scale explication of the stylistic premises of classic music, a guide to the principles according to which this music was composed.

This book undertakes to define these principles. It offers a set of criteria, drawn from musical analysis and theoretical treatises of the 18th century, that can serve as guidelines for the investigation of classic music.

The music central to this study, circa 1770-1800, is vast in quantity. The 'Breitkopf Thematic Catalogue, 1762-1787', lists thematic incipits of close to 10,000 compositions; thousands of 18th-century composers are listed in the RISM catalogue.

The problems of recovery, authentication, and editing this enormous repertory are overwhelming. But its very size becomes and advantage for style analysis. Since most of this music had to be composed quickly, for immediate use, composers relied on familiar and universally accepted formulas for its organization and handling of detail. Wherever we sample this music, we find it runs true to type.

This consistency bespeaks a 'language' understood throughout Europe and parts of the New World. Moreover, to speak of the 18th-century music as a language is not simply to use a figure of speech. Structural parallels between music and oratory follow a clear path through music theory of the 17th and 18th centuries. Just as there were rules for organizing an oratorical discourse, so were there explicit prescriptions for building a musical progression. Both language and music and their vocabulary, syntax, and arrangement of formal structures, subsumed under the title 'Rhetoric.' The skilled composer, the well-trained performer, the perceptive listener had command of musical rhetoric, much as a literate person today deal with the grammar of language. The expertise of the composer was shown in his ability to manipulate his ideas flexibly and felicitously within the rhetorical system.

...

This book allows the student to approach the music and musical precepts of the 18th century in much the same way a listener of that time would have done. The first attraction to the music would be to its melodic materials, the topics of the musical discourse, its vocabulary. They are examined in detail in Part I, 'Expression.'
Each of the following sections probes deeper into the core of the music: its syntax is examined in Part II, 'Rhetoric'; its formal structure in Part III, 'Form'; and its overall style in Part IV, 'Stylistic Perspectives.' The rhetorical principles discussed here have been used by the author in his teaching of music literature and theory at Stanford University. The volume is addressed to students, performers, and listeners, whose appreciation of the scope of classic music can be increased by insights into how it was put together."
