Better than Sappy

A Little Princess follows the story of Sara Crewe, a young girl whose mother died when she was a baby and who has been sent
to bording school. She has the finest clothes and toys and anything she wants but isn't spoiled (the story is a fairy tale,
by the way). She imagines herself as a princess and wants to be kind wise and just. She does good deeds as her way of "scattering
largess to the population." This results in her being the social butterfly of the bording school and earns her the animosity
of its queen bee. All this changes in an instant when her fortune is lost and she becomes a scullery maid in the same boarding
school. She works all day, sleeps in an unheated attic, and is underfed. She now imagines herself as a princess in disguise,
and continues to try and do good deeds for anyone less fotunate. But now she has another identity too - a soldier, like her
father, who must live on rations and bravely face each day.
I didn't find this book to be overly sappy and sentimental, but it got close to the borderline at times. There were plenty of discussions of dolls and lacey dresses and ribbons. I read this as an adult. I guess these are supposed to appeal to little girls who want to have a little princessy playground and so would love to read about ribbons, but I think descriptions of lace would have put me off as a child as well. Like I said, these only get borderline sappy, probably because Sara soon becomes penniless and enters the lower class. As a scullery maid she experiences hunger, phsychological abuse from the bording school mistress, and a grinding work schedule. This is not sugar coated for the children, but it isn't the focus either. The focus is on Sara's internal thoughts, her relationships with her few loyal student friends, and what she thinks of the neighbors and the new people she meets and things she sees. So even though there is all this poverty it is there as a setting and not because the author has an axe to grind. Even the ending is fairy tale, but partly bitter-sweet. Strangely enough, this book came across as realistic.
This is a children's book, but functions as a book for adults as well. For example, the estate agent's diplomacy in getting Sara hired by the bording school after she is found to be penniless has some subtlties that are going to be more real for older readers.
I recommend this book to all. It is a children's book that works for adults too. It skirts the border of sappy, but for me didn't cross over at any point. It was a good story that I read through quickly and did not get bored with or bogged down by.

The reality behind free trade

Review Date: 2005-04-21
This book looks at CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade Agreement, the newest attempt to bring "free trade" to the Western
Hemisphere. A companion to the recently released DVD called "American Jobs," this book shows that the reality of free trade
is nowhere near as bright as the promise.
If free trade in general, and CAFTA in particular, is such a wonderful thing, then a few questions come to mind. Part of the attraction of free trade is that people in Latin America are going to start buying lots of US-made products, leading to new jobs here in America. How is that going to happen when the trend in wages is very much downward, to see who can reach the bottom first? It takes years, and higher wages, to create any sort of consumer society in Latin America. If high American wages are an "inefficiency" to be gotten rid of as soon as possible, who is going to buy all those hundred-dollar sneakers and wide-screen TVs? Where are all these new industries for which laid-off American workers are supposed to retrain?
NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and outsourcing in general, has led to a large loss of jobs. In the 21st century, over 3 million American manufacturing jobs are gone, never to return. According to one estimate, almost 900,000 jobs headed to Mexico because of NAFTA. Those maquiladora jobs are now leaving Mexico and going to China, where the wages are even lower. Over 1.5 million Mexican farmers have been forced off the land because of cheap (and subsidized) American agricultural imports. The same thing will happen in Central America if CAFTA comes into effect. None of those displaced farmers are going to head north and illegally enter America?
This is an excellent book. It doesn't go into much detail (that's not the intention), but it gives the reader plenty to consider. It is written in easy-to-understand language, so even those who know nothing about free trade can understand it. Overall, it is very highly recommended.

Although a bit technical even for the educated layperson, this book is an amazing analysis of the economic situation in Germany.
We in the United States should study this material carefully in order that we may avoid the problems that afflict welfare
states, including a precipitous drop in reproduction rates, which tends to be an unintended but very serious consequence of
such systems.

stopping when there was nothing else to say, which made him an extraordinary storyteller.

Ok, I haven't read the book, but I heard an interview with Ken Thomas on the radio talking about his book and it sounds very
interesting. It's about corporate welfare (subsidies/tax breaks given to business by state, local, or national government
in order to convince business to build in its area). Im waiting for the book to come in at my local library because there
is no way in hell im paying 65 dollars for it. That really bothers me. Anyway, when i finish it, i'll Write a real review.
I wouldnt be requesting if from the library if I didnt think it sounded good on the radio.

Language Dynamics courses are the only courses I know of that are truly dedicated to effective and immediate communication
in the target language. Academic courses often reflect the literary interests of professors, many of whom never had the
experience of learning the target language as a second language. With these courses, you can hit the streets after every
lesson knowing you can say more than you could yesterday."
