Classic, classic! Foundation for an entire genre

I couldn't write a word without Lazaro, the omnipresent narrator of this slim volume. When I want to feel a character is a true rogue I turn to Lazaro. He puts me in the mood. He's funny. He's pitiful. He survives.

I first read "Lazarillo de Tormes" years ago in grad school. I never tire of him. And this bilingual edition is so wonderful. The original Spanish is pretty archaic and difficult, but with this edition you can flip back and forth between English and Spanish allowing better comprehension and faster reading.

Of course Lazarillo is the foundation for all the picaresque novels from Cervantes, to Twain, to more recent unmentionables. He was banned by the inquisition, sanitized and allowed to reappear under a new title "Lazarillo castigado." Sounds something like the present, doesn't it. Lazaro is my inspiration.

This review is not about the Lazarillo, which is a timeless classic, but about this particular dual-language edition, featuring a translation, prologue, and notes, by Stanley Appelbaum.
It presents this classic in a very proficient way to an English speaker. In a short, to-the-point introduction, the author explains which edition has been chosen for the Spanish version and why. He gives just enough historical and literary context about the Lazarillo to make it more enjoyable, and explains some very reasonable spelling choices.

The English translation itself is sober, and totally unpretentious, but somehow manages to keep much of the freshness and general rowdy spirit of the original. Footnotes are strategically added, without ever becoming overbearing, to give some historical context or explain some pun difficult to translate.

Even a cultured, non-specialist Spanish speaker like myself can benefit from the concise information contained in this little book. I found myself often resorting to the English translation (presented always on the right-side pages) to better understand some archaism or difficult expression.

Lazarillo is one of those little books everyone should read, simply because of the amount of concentrated wisdom it contains in little space.
Appelbaum respects that spirit, and his translation doesn't hinder that wisdom transmition.

Excellent off-the-track guide

I have used this book extensively on several trips to London. Excellent descriptions allow you to determine what markets will be of interest... and which to avoid. Many of the smaller markets are hard to find without a guide of some sort, and this book is small enough to carry in your back pocket. If you intend to delve deeper than the crowded tourist attractions, this guide will open a window into what London is really like.

Excellent guide to many many streets

Full of information about street markets in London, not only the world famous Portobello Road or Camden Town. When I travelled to England in 2000, I was fed up with fasionable / tourist markets, and then I found this book, which took me to some other streets to spend a ideal Saturday morning in. The author knows the excitement when you stroll down the streets filled with colourful fruit and veg, clothes, bottles of shampoo, cushions and what-you-call bric-a-blac. (Shoppers and traders are there as well as pickpockets!) He says he was led to write about street trade to see the multi-cultural / multi-racial energy at Ridley Road market in East London, and this explains a lot. This book actually guide you down to the core of those traditional street trade. Maps, transport information and where-to-park suggestions --really helpful for drivers-- and some drawings, but no glossy photographs. Thin and small enough to carry about all the time.

De l'Aéropostale et des pilotes en général...
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-07

In his time, the great Mermoz was loved and respected from Paris to Buenos Aires. In aviation's early days, he was on the front line to develop the air courier routes from France to Spain, and from there, to Africa and South America. In desperate conditions, he and the other pilots of what would become l'Aéropostale gave their life to build the foundations of modern day aviation. Masterfully written, it is not only an amazing true story of adventure, courage and friendship but also the inspiring tale of a hero

Flight...

Review Date: 2000-10-04
Completed the day before his death in 1961, Rigadoon, the mostcompassionate of Celine's novels, explores the ravages of war and its aftermath. The final entry in Celine's horrific trilogy (the preceding volumes are Castle to Castle and North) about his and his wife's flight from Vichy France through a collapsing Third Reich to Denmark, as they desperately seek to avoid punishment as Nazi collaborators. Often comic and always angry, the first-person autobiographical narrator, with his wife and their cat in tow, takes the reader with him on his flight from Paris to Denmark after finding himself on the losing side of World War II. The train rides that encompass the novel are filled with madness and mercy.... Celine quite deliberately makes us feel the inescapable, mind-rotting horror of endless chaos.... END

Lightings of style in the night of experience (2)

Review Date: 1995-10-21

Celine once said he wrote to make other writers unreadable. While this may strike one as a strange project, I would agree, with many others, that it was largely fulfilled. Throughout his life, Celine evolved a very personal, "jubilatoire" (sorry, my first language is French) style that does make most of modern French authors look like zombies. "Rigodon", Celine's last book, displays a unique stylistic density. His famous ubiquitous "!..." actually hide ample stylistic movements of incredible precision. The English version should show how impossible it is to translate Celine's fantastic prose.

"Journey", Celine's first book, includes unexpected borrowings form colloquial, spoken French. A look to further works, however, shows that these borrowings were only a starting point for a unique work on the French language. From the night of his personal experience, Celine reaches through language to ultimate elegance, light and lightness - a transfiguration arguably difficult to translate into English.

As the Director of Training Development for an American based international company, I found this book to be extremely informative, very practical, as well as an interesting read. An unusal combination to find in business books. Miller obviously knows his subject and is able to convey his valuable information in a very readable manner.

Alice in Paris.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-02
Like his hero Lewis Carroll, Raymond Queneau was a polyglot, and a mathematician with a love of patterns, forms and games. He wrote a study of dog language in Carroll's 'Sylvie and Bruno', and 'Zazie' is his update of Alice to the Parisian Wonderland of the late 1950s, although it is not clear whether Zazie is an anti-Alice, bringing chaos to a normal society, or whether she is a precocious, sensible, curious (if foul-mouthed) child faced with a blinkingly unstable universe: Zazie is notably passive in the book's final third, when the linguistic, philosophical, temporal, narrative, spatial and sexual dissolutions collapse into a frenzy of barmy physical violence.

the book as a whole sees Rabelais and Diderot rewriting the Arabian Nights. Each chapter plays like a Ionesco drama, a sustained, rhythmic dialogue where the disparity between bizarre event and the disintegrating attempts of language to express it, creates a gap where logic contracts, explodes and comes back together in an hilarious anti-logic. Not only are the borders of dream and reality, plausibility and fantasy, role play and identity broken down, but Queneau's narrative procedures - at once Joycean in its plenitude, and startling in its gaping ellipses - further confuse the reader.

'Zazie' is Queneau's most 'plausible' novel, in that much of its fun lies in its Parisian locales, and its comedy at the expense of romantic cliches about the city; but it is also a true Surrealist novel, both in breaking down the normality of the real, and in asserting that the only way you can get what you want is to dream.

Strange and Funny!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-20
Raymond Queneau has written a strange but tantalizing little novel about an adolescent named Zazie... she has a New York accent, and the mouth of a Henry Miller. Her misadventures in Paris, prove challenging to those around her,and amusing to the reader. It's am amusing collage of seemimgly misplaced dialogue and eccentric characters, yet is easy to read and laugh with.

(Note: Queneau is, I think, an underappreciated genius. You can find out more about him by looking up the book "The OULIPO COMPENDIUM" here at Amazon, which contains his extraordinary "One-hundred-trillion sonnets." "Oulipans: rats who build the labyrinth from which they plan to escape" -- Raymond Queneau).

Zazie is less of a labyrinth and more of a amusement park, a good introduction to this imaginative writer. Probably not for those easily offended (nor is "Zazie" herself), but a little treasure worth looking for.
