This book has reading comprehension questions in the back! The original description led me to believe it was a regular French-language book. Also, it is a collection of excerpts--it is not the French language version of the "Adventures of Arsene Lupin" book.

The writing style precise,clear, a treat!

There are only so may things that one can say about a foreign language dictionary, but those things are, nevertheless, worth saying. The Random House German-English dictionary is a fine choice for a German-English dictionary, and perfect choice for students and others who need a dictionary they can stuff in their bag. The volume is just the right size to fit nicely, even in a small messenger bag, but it avoids the problems of "compact dictionaries." The print is easily legible, the wordlist is quite comprehensive, and the paper is thick enough to highlite or turn quickly without fear of damage.

The dictionary might have been perfect if it had been bound with a thin hardcover to better prepare it for the rigors of life in a student's backpack, but that might have shown through in the price. As it stands, the price is right -- extremely reasonable for such a nicely made book. Unless you need an extremely comprehensive or idiomatic (hence expensive) reference dictionary for translation, Random House's German-English dictionary is the right choice.

Synopsis:

Comments:
Shannon and Luca are former lovers that are reunited after their siblings tragically die in an accident, leaving behind their niece. Luca still has strong feelings for Shannon, yet is bitter over what he believes caused their relationship to end. Nevertheless, Luca believes that a marriage between him and Shannon is the best solution for their niece. But, the truth as to why they broke up will reveal itself bringing forth issues of trust and betrayal. Though at times I got frustrated with Luca's suspicious mind and his issues with trust, he was not a totally loathsome hero. Shannon had a lot of spunk, but I wish that the BIG misunderstanding could have been resolved earlier. Overall, Shannon and Luca had powerful chemistry together and both endured and showed a lot of powerful emotions.

I used this book as a reference for a paper I wrote about recent economic and political reforms in Vietnam (the full text of which can be found on my web site). I found it invaluable. It provides a good, though overly optimistic, account of reform since the mid 80's. The author takes the reader through the changes made under the "doi moi" reform program through to economic progress of the mid 90's.

Though published in 1997, the research seems to have ended in 1995 and so it is a bit out-dated. But it is still a useful, easy read for anyone who wants to know how Vietnam has been changing over the past decade.
