Wonderful! The best, most readable book I have read by Barthes, and the best work I have read on Sade. Full of humor and insight with lots of savory biographical tidbits. The startlingly *natural* juxtaposition of Loyola, Fourier and Sade is cool and casual, not at all forced, and all the more remarkable for that. I read this in one sitting. You should too.

No Savvy Investor Should Ignore This Book

Review Date: 2008-09-03
Foreign investment in today's global economy is indeed tricky business. Though the opportunity for high profits exists--as evidenced by the billions of foreign direct investment per year--these same emerging markets are fraught with risk and uncertainty, of which investors many well-developed nations are virtually unaccustomed.

In "Six Sizzling Markets: How to Profit From Investing in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Korea and Mexico" (Wiley 2008) finance and investment thoughtleader Pran Tiku explores six of the fastest growing markets in the global economy, in a book no savvy investor ought to be without. Incorporating deep historical analysis, contemporary trends and the "Eight Tenets of Growth" Tiku outlines the driving forces behind today's emerging economies--and shows investors of all levels how to reap the profits.

Weighing demographics, economic performance, technology, open trade, infrastructure development, transparency legal systems, education, and financial policies, Tiku concludes each market analysis by examining the nation's most promising industries, as well as the individual companies that are poised to sustain long-term economic growth. With a host of exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, American Depository Receipts (ADRs) and analysis of various indexes, "Six Sizzling Markets" blends the hard data of an economist with the insight and perspective of a historian--making it a balanced, informative, easy-to-read guide on investing in developing markets.

Pran Tiku, Principal and founder of Peak Financial Management, Inc., in Waltham, Massachusetts, has been providing clients with expert investment analysis for over twenty-five years--the last four of which he was recognized by Worth magazine as one of the nation's top 100 financial advisers.

A sought-out expert on a wide variety of financial topics, Pran is a frequent guest on Bloomberg TV, CNBC, NECN, Fox Business and CNNfn in addition to regularly publishing articles, essays and opinion pieces to the local and national press. His involvement with such associations as the Boston Society for the Institute of Financial Planners and the Boston Chapter for the International Association for Financial Planning, and the Financial Planning Practitioners-- in addition to hosting a variety of courses and seminars-- has helped him become one of the industry's most regarded experts.

Solal is the son of the chief rabbi of Cephalonia. He is on his way to become a highly recognised diplomat for the United Nations. He then falls for a sweet and beautiful French catholic girl, just on the eve of WWII. They get together, passionate, ignorant of their families' disapprovals. But the growing antisemitism affects Solal's love and behaviour, and he becomes sarcastic, irritable and guilty, in spite of Aurore's efforts to keep their love alive. This is written in a beautiful, original style by a wonderful and sincere author who deserve international recognition. His tone gets you to the insights of human brain, which he analyzes with an incredible lucidity. Read it !

I love this book. It's somewhere between a novel and a short story, and I am enthralled by all of the detail. It's obvious that Flaubert concentrated on every single word, because not only did he write and scratch through 3 pg.s for every sentence, but avid readers and writers will be able to understand the affection he gave to la parole. Flaubert is now one of my favorites, because he is one of the best writers I've read so far.

Zadig: A Masterpiece
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-14
Zadig is a well written story of about the wise man named Zadig. He has many characteristics that make him a perfect worldly man at its greatest. He is wise, justified, and well-read. By far my favorite part in this little masterpiece is when Zadig makes the fine decisions for the King such as when he helped the woman claim her baby. Zadig gets really great when Zadig helps the Widows by convincing them to not burn themselves. I felt the emotion when Zadig lost his beloved Queen when the king unjustly ordered Zadig executed for having an affair with the queen, which he did not. Overall Zadig is a wonderful story that I would suggest to read whether your interests include classics, fantasy, fast-paced, or slow-paced books. It can interesting to a person of any age. Zadig has a little place within me now and I hope this classic story of a man trying to be Just stays with me forever.

Shows the way toward a Single Global Currency
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-26
In "Wealth by Association" John Edmunds and John Marthinsen show how the world can move forward to a single global currency. Not only will such a world save on the hundreds of billions of dollars annually wasted today on foreign exchange trading transaction costs, and on avoided currency crises and on avoided currency inflation; the assets of the world will grow because of the elimination of currency risk.
If the decision makers of the world could read this book, they would push much more rapidly toward a single global currency. The concepts in "Wealth by Association" are not rocket science, as the authors show how the U.S. Dollar and the old German Mark are/were "common currencies", as is now the euro.
Bravo for "Wealth by Association"

A World List of Manichaean Middle Persian and Parthian (Ancient Near East)

A useful vocabulary list
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-26
This book contains a glossary of the words contained in vol. I of the set, a selection of Manichaean Middle Persian and Parthian texts. The definitions are merely glosses, one or a few words, but they are helpful, as they get right to the point.

The glossary uses a Roman-alphabet transliteration exclusively. The words are arranged in an alphabetical order which follows the Roman order as closely as possible. Each entry consists of four elements: (1) the transliteration; (2) a transcription, which includes vowels; where the Persian and Parthian phonemic values differ, the correct form for each language is clearly indicated; (3) an abbreviation to show whether the word is "Pe." (Persian), "Pth." (Parthian), or "c." (common); (4) the gloss(es), which include, as applicable, past participles of verbs, or idiomatic phrases involving any kind of word. The list also includes some spelling variants, which have cross-references to the main entries.

The first part of each entry, the transliteration, is set off in a column of its own, occupying the left third of the page. This makes for a very user-friendly format in which it is easy to pick out specific words of interest.

A helpful appendix is a reverse index of all the entries, prepared by Ronald Zwanziger. This proved particularly useful to me, as a non-specialist in Iranian languages. (I am doing research on Persian loanwords in Syriac, as part of my doctoral studies in the latter language).

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Middle Persian or Parthian. It has a well organized, well formatted collection of a useful selection of vocabulary items.
