A Superb Policy Analysis
Stanley Changnon and his colleagues have written the best, and most comprehensive analysis of what really happened with the biggest climate event of the century, the 1997-1998 El Nino. What is unique about this book is that they carefully look at both the devastation that occured and the positive impacts from the mild winter -- fewer deaths from ice storms, more shopping when people went out in milder weather, less fuel oil. They also point out the places where the forecast worked, and where it had problems. As society gets more and more sensitive to weather events, we will need more thoughtful probing into how we have responded and how we will respond. This book sets the stage, and is written by experts who have analyzed other big weather events. I strongly recommend it.

Highly recommended, informative critically important reading
The extreme weather condition known as El Nino is part of a much bigger world weather system linking the North Atlantic Oscillation, the Asian monsoon, and the Pacific El Nino. Several El Nino episodes took place during the Little Ice Age between 1200 and 1900, especially in the 1570-1740 time frame. Based upon archaeological findings as well as historical records, El Nino: History And Crisis is a superb history of the impact upon human civilizations of this phenomena down to the present day, and offers timely warnings of the likely effects of future weather-affecting climate changes on agriculture and public health. Highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in the environment.

A superb survey and history of the El Nino phenomenon.
This survey of the El Nino phenomenon examines world systems of climate and change, bringing together the latest historical and scientific discoveries about El Nino and its effects on civilizations. Archaeological records and scientific surveys are used in the course of considering the past effects of El Nino and its possibilities for the future of Earth's climate.

A Meteorological Cult Classic
I'm an earth science teacher and initially shied away from the mass market nature of this text, but I looked over a couple of pages at the pharmacy one afternoon and was hooked. A thorough and thoroughly engaging book about El Nino - everything you need to know. And believe me. YOU NEED TO KNOW.

Porter=Dylan
Porter like Bob Dylan crafts a superb detailed synopsis of one of the strangest inexplicable events in recent history. Is the government behind this weather phenemenon? Chapter 4 is very well written, detailing all of the catastrphies in California. Check this out!!!

Future Organizational Design : The Scope for the IT-based Enterprise

A must-read for anyone interested in IT and organizations
What do computers and information technology do for organizations? How have they changed, and, more importantly, how might they change the way we structure, manage, and operate organizations? If these questions interest you, then this is the book for you.

First, the author guides you through a thorough examination of how human characteristics (limited memory, processing constraints, emotions) condition organizational structure. Next, he explores how technologies of all sorts (e.g., writing, printing, telecommunications) affect organizations by relieving these limitations. Finally, only after establishing this very important context, does he turn to what exactly information technology means to organizations. Computers, he concludes, affect organizations primarily through two characteristics -- their enormous and enormously accessible memories, and their unparalleled communicating and coordinating potential.

Having established these foundations, his conclusions -- what sort of organizational structures IT facilitates -- follow logically and smoothly. Whether or not you agree with these conclusions, taking the journey with the author to arrive at them is both entertaining and educational. This book is authoritative, well-written, and hugely educational.

Beyond the Internet hype
After a thorough analysis of man's organization and technology, Groths sets out to investigate the new forms of organization that IT faciliates. His innovations includes 'The Joystick Organization', the Meta-Organization' and ' The Organized Cloud'.

Groth is no IT nerd, nor a Luddite. He is surprisingly sober on the digital economy, and often funny. There are not too many people on this planet who integrates Sokrates' dialogues, Mintzberg's organization theory and the technical intricacies of computer systems into one single framework. There may be good reasons not to, but when Groth does this, you feel it is natural and coherent.

When Larry King calls to ask what the world will be like in the next century, you don't tell him you're too busy to talk. Even Bill Gates finds the time to discuss the impact of e-mail on business ("The post office and delivery companies are going to see the quantity of correspondence they deliver fall, but at the same time they'll see the amount of merchandise they deliver rise").

With more than 40 original interviews with people ranging from artist Peter Max to Vibe's national affairs editor Farai Chideya, King covers all the major topics, including politics, science, media, education, business, the arts, and spirituality; he even gets input on the future of baseball from sportscaster Bob Costas and acting commissioner Bud Selig. In addition to knowing whom to talk to, King also knows to let them do most of the talking. His unintrusive questions allow his guests to flesh out their ideas in significant detail.

Must read
This book was wirtten in 1999, and after 2.5 years I saw lots of the things they said is getting real.
The book is mostly about American culture but therearesome parts which is global. And they really catch my attention.
The part that is most interesting and true is the converstaion with Richad Holbroke. His future forecast about terrorism was right. After 9/11, it became reality.
If you want to have a different point of view from experts, read this book.

A Must-Read
This book captivated me this summer, and has lead me to look into and research other areas of our changing world...It is a must-read for any college student who wants to take an active role in the next millenium.

Implementing Your Strategic Plan: How to Turn "Intent" into Effective Action for Sustainable Change

The More Times Change...
...the more they stay the same. Despite the fact that this book was written and published more than five years ago, it's still the best book written on strategy execution and implementation. Alright,... I'll admit it: the book's title and cover design need a little work (author take note!!). However, if you're willing to look past these superficial flaws, you'll discover the definative book on strategy implementation -- even better than Larry Bossidy's fine "Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done." In addition to this book and Bossidy's "Execution," I'd also recommend that you consider Kotter's "Leading Change" and Smallwood, Ulrich, and Zenger's "Results-Based Leadership" (both five-star books!!). Bottom line? "Implementing Your Strategic Plan" is a must addition to your management library. Overall grade: B+/A.

Making strategic intent into a reality.
This book could have been titled "making change happen." The core of this book consists of a chapter by chapter discussion of the 18 keys to implementing the strategic plan. The 18 keys are grouped into five categories: setting accountability; enabling and aligning action; fixing the organization; providing an environment in which people can excel; and judging and rewarding. This is a superb, penetrating and detailed book which begins with a fascinating summary of findings from the author's survey of CEOs and key executives who were successful in implementing change. One insight stands out from these findings-teams don't develop paradigm shift strategies; CEOs do. Indeed Fogg states that the single most important factor in the change equation is leadership. With that truth set forth up front, we were confident that this book would be a rewarding experience; it was...and we highly recommend it!

My Economics Rabbi!
Mr. Nelson wrote this book many years ago. It is still useful today in teaching the practicing economist or investment analyst what statistics are useful in predicting economic dynamics. His belief in using statistics that are not subject to revisions was a revelation to me as should be to anyone who uses historical economic data for forecasting in real time.

Simple Explanations of the Big Economic Picture
This is a great little book. It explains the basics of economics in terms of the monthly and quarterly government numbers. It teaches you what numbers are really real and what numbers are bogus.

Good sense with good humor
This is the best book yet for small investors. Warren Boroson's previous advice made it possible for me to take early retirement. Now, he takes us hand-in-hand with the "big guys" and shows us the paths to take and to avoid through today's volatile market. Good sense with good humor. A "must read."

Stock Picking Made Easy
I just started investing seriously a couple of years ago, and am still learning. Mr. Boroson's book was invaluable to me. It contained a lot of concise, well-thought-out advice that was immediately relevent to today's uncertain investment climate. Most books about investing I've read are either too simple, or so complicated that you need to be Warren Buffet himself to understand them. I liked Mr. Boroson's book because it helped me think through decisions more clearly without trying to impress me with a lot of complicated terms and ideas that won't help me build a winning portfolio. I'm already putting some of Mr. Boroson's strategies to work!
