Privacy is almost obsolete. There's an army of data miners out there digging up as much dirt as possible on you, your loved ones, and practically everyone else in the world, but you can plug up the leaks if you know their tricks. Security experts Kevin McKeown and Dave Stern want to show you who's looking, what he or she is looking for, and how that person is getting access to your most private information, starting with Social Security number, address, and employer, and moving up to your buying habits and your children's play habits. Your Secrets Are My Business is a 250-page self-help manual for the paranoid--and if you're not even a little nervous about who might be looking over your shoulder, by the time you've read the first chapter, you'll be eager for McKeown's suggestions. Even that holiest of holies, your credit-card number, is seen by more people than you probably trust--but if you carefully observe your purchasing habits, you can catch fraud before it wrecks your bank account.

The book alternates, on the one hand, between morbidly entertaining stories of McKeown's days in the trenches following the trail of insurance fraud to the Caribbean and digging through Dumpsters to piece together criminal profiles and, on the other, extremely practical tips for ensuring your privacy (even if you aren't a villainous mastermind). The authors keep the reader interested while making their case for a return to old-fashioned notions of private life. It takes quite a bit of energy to protect your personal information, but the freedom from harassment by junk mailers, telephone solicitors, and other unsavory types is worth it. Whether you want to know how to stay in hiding or just want to learn why people care about what car you drive, Your Secrets Are My Business will make your life seem a thousand times more interesting, because you'll see it through the eyes of a professional investigator. --Rob Lightner

WELL WORTH THE READ
I saw the book in a bookstore and bought it on a whim. Interesting, funny, and also educational. Some of the issues of infringement into your privacy are scary. A very, very good read!

Learn how to reclaim your privacy
This book makes it really clear that privacy doesn't exist. McKeown uses some very funny stories to illustrate the techniques the con men use to steal people's identities. Not only is this a fun read, it also has great reference information as to how to protect your credit, secure your privacy, and make it so you are NOT a target for the criminals. This is a book for everyone -- if you don't think you could be a target for the identity theives, you're wrong. If you're not careful, they can get enough information just from looking at your car parked in a parking lot to rip you off -- scary stuff.

What You Need to Know to Protect Yourself
I work with research and the Internet all the time. Nonetheless, it was still amazing to me what people can learn about you. I found the book useful for the everyday person, who should learn this.

The same technologies that have been used to build a world-wide Internet are increasingly being used within companies to create "Intranets". This is one of the first books devoted exclusively to Intranetworking, and will be invaluable as MIS staff and all members of your company make the transition from LANs to WANs. Recommended.

Simple!!!
If you don't have a clue where to start when speaking about Intranets read this book. From A to Z, explaining everything in a very simple way

The 1st book to get before the creation of your Intranet
The Corporate Intranet by Ryan Bernard covers every crucial point necessary to "create and manage an internal web for your organization." The language used is easy to understand, gets to the point quickly, and moves from subject to subject with ease

Practical and very useful guide for building an Intranet.
Ryan Bernard's book (published title "The Corporate Intranet"), is one of the best technical books I read lately. It is very clear, useful, well written and practical. The book answered many of my lingering questions. Its "cookbook" approach, well selected and presented examples make it very easy to follow. Unlike in many other books, no new terminology is used before it's explained. I highly recommend it to anyone starting to build an Intranet. Susan Farkas, NYLCare Healthplans, N.Y.C.

A very easy-to-use book!
It is quite unusual to find a book on the Internet written by someone for whom english is not a second language. And it is even more unusual for an author to not assume that you are already well-versed in the subject. Especially useful is McDonnell's section on search engines, which lists their websites and explains how to use them. For example, she tells you how to "...monitor what's being said about your favorite hot topic in the thousands of discussion groups on the Internet... you can easily search by subject, newsgroup name, date, or writer of the posted messages." I keep this book right next to my computer and use it almost every day.

Good overall view with some helpful specifics
This book was a great one to start out with if you'd like to know how to do what everyone (it seems) is doing on the net these days. Learning the basics isn't that hard, and this book does a good job with it.

A Fun, Humorous, Easy-to-Read, and Delightful Guide!
There are a number of helpful Internet guides available in print today that target a variety of reading audiences. One of the better ones published in recent years for beginners is Sharon McDonnell's The Everything Internet Book. She offers a broad treatment of the Internet scene.

Readers will not thumb through this book for long before realizing that it covers just about every possible aspect of the Internet. Beginners will learn how to find an Internet Service Provider (ISP), how to install and use the leading Web browsers, e-mail programs, and plug-ins, how to search the Internet, how to send e-mail, how to design Websites, and how to select good domain names and avoiding registering the wrong ones!

McDonnell provides her readers with warnings of some of the pitfalls and dangers of operating online. She warns readers of computer viruses, of how easy it is for rumors to spread online, snooping, privacy, and legal issues. Employees for instance, are advised to think very carefully before composing and sending e-mail correspondence from their computers at work. Parents will learn how to keep their kids safe from online dangers as well.

McDonnell offers a number of valuable resources her readers can access for additional assistance. Many of the chapters include references to other helpful books and Websites. Readers are invited to grab free Web graphics, shareware programs, and loads of tips and advice made available online by others. A directory listing at the back of the book offers access to some of the better sites online today.

McDonnell does a great job opening up the world of the Internet for beginners. This is an excellent guide for anyone to get started with. Adults and children alike will benefit from the instruction offered in this fun, humorous, easy-to-read, and delightful guide. Great for gifts and classroom use!

Great Gift
As an eager grandmother-to-be, I thought this book would be a great gift for my son and other young families looking for ways to save money. I have read other "Free Stuff & Good Deals" books by this author and have never been disappointed yet. Always good value!

Great Ideas that Kids will Love as much as Parents.....
I was amazed when I saw the number, quality and value of the FREEBIES that were listed in the book. As parents, we often think that the more an activity or item costs the better it is, but, this is not true. There are so many quality fun and educational items and activities for kids, it will be a long time before I pay substantial $$ again. I can't wait to see the other books that Linda Bowman has written about Freebies for Seniors, Pets, and on the Internet.

Essential Job Search Resource!
I spent time off and on looking at job sites on the Internet. While I was always intrigued by the sheer volume of information available, I became discouraged because of the amount of time involved. I also often didn't find job listings in my area of interest or jobs that were not in my geographic location UNTIL I USED THIS BOOK. I'm excited about actually learning a new skill that will be useful throughout my career. My job search is very much in my control with a complete and logical program that is easy to mange. Friends and family who are graduating from high school or college will get this book as graduation gifts; it's worth more to them than a check in an envelope.

Excellent Book
This book is easy to read and lays out the exact steps to follow. If you want to want to put an Internet job search campaign together, this is an excellent way to do it. I recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to waste alot of time trying to figure out how to job search on the Internet.

An Outstanding Job Search Book
I bought this book based upon the recommendations of 2 associates who, like me, lost their job because of a company reorganization. They were so high on the book that I decided to try it out. After an introduction designed for people with little or no Internet experience, the book immediately starts you on your job search. The author doesn't try to tell jokes or be cute. Instead, he lays out a very logical approach and technique for online job searching. Examples and exercises are put together so that you are actually building your own job search campaign as you work through the book. The book is comprehensive, easy to use, and really is "free of techno-babble" as the author claims. Don't buy this book if you want to curl up with something in bed. Buy it, though, if you want to use the Net to look for a job. I have seen other books that discuss Internet job searching. This one is absolutely the best I have seen.

Terrifically helpful
I found this book quite helpful in sorting through the maze of symptoms of various autoimmune disorders. It even helped me to self-diagnose one I did not know I had. The information is well laid out; it is comprehensive and current while not overly scientific. The cross reference of other automimmune diseases is particularly useful.

MUCH NEEDED BOOK FOR MEDICAL & NON-MEDICAL PERSONNEL
This book is a must-read for all who have or suspect they or family members or friends have an autoimmune disorder. It is presented in a very organized and efficent manner and is helpful to the patient as well as the health care professional.

It is obvious that the authors have throughly researched all the materials necessary to present accurate, unbiased and essential information. The book is well organized, cross-referenced and covers autoimmune disorders from A to Z.

In addition to the book itself, the resources listed in it are priceless!

Even after being a Myasthenia Gravis patient and coping with the disorder for years, I learned more about Myasthenia by reading this book. I also gave my doctor a copy! Those of us with autoimmune disorders should make it priority read!

The interviews with patients were especially helpful and those with health care professionals were excellent. The possibility of a female having an autoimmune disorder is much higher than that of a male, so the book's main focus is on women. However, it is extremely helpful to men, also.

My family and friends now understand much more about my disease. Congratulations to the authors on a much awaited and much needed book.

Maximum Accessibility: Making Your Web Site More Usable for Everyone

The best book around on accessibility
This book beats the others I've seen hands down. Not only does it explain exactly what the problems are; it also tells you how to go about fixing them, in detail, including code solutions in some places. Where there aren't solutions it presents very useful workarounds.

The W3C guidelines only take you so far. This book gets you to the next level, and helps you start thinking the right way so you can solve new problems that come up in a similar fashion.

Now, if someone would only write a book on making web sites *usable* for people with disabilities (not just accessible), we'd be laughing.

The best book on web accessibility. Period.
I'll just come right out and say it: Dr. John Slatin and Sharron Rush have written what is going to become an industry standard text for web accessibility.

The few other books on web accessibility have only certain strong points, or are overviews lacking concrete direction. Not so with Maximum Accessibility. Slatin & Rush present a comprehensive evaluation of the state of the industry in regard to web accessibility, a summary (perhaps the most comprehensive, yet readable, I've ever found) of U.S. and international law pertaining to accessibility for the disabled, and [perhaps the most compelling parts of the book] personal looks at disabled users' interactions using popular web sites to do everyday tasks. [A side note: congratulations to amazon.com for their willing paricipation in the book (including permission for many screenshots), and for being forthright in admitting when they could do things better for disabled users -- and then doing them. On the contrary: shame on the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Organizing Committee for being made aware of huge problems, admitting they knew about it, then refusing to return the authors' calls after they had promised to work with them, and finally refusing permission to use screenshots from their web site in the book.]

More than just presenting an overview, though, Slatin & Rush delve into the code behind the page presentation (something like Nielsen's "50 Web Pages Deconstructed" -- not surprising, since he wrote the foreward for Maximum Accssibility). They identify problems, explain *why* they are problems, demonstrate ways to fix (or improve) them, or, when things just can't be fixed, offer suggestions on ways to provide equivalent content that is accessible. In short, Maximum Accessibility is "one stop shopping" for improving the accessibility of web sites: from why, to where, to how, the information is in here, it's current, and it represents the best practices of a large segment of the technology industry.

A substantial portion of the population has at least some form of disability. A substantal number of them actively use the web. From a purely profit-driven motive, why would you want to exclude potential customers from your site? From a purely legal point of view, you may be required to provide accessibility, depending on your type of company or organization and the services you provide. From a purely moral standpoint, it's just the right thing to take some very simple steps to ensure your information is available to all. And from an egocentric/pragmatic viewpoint, well-constructed accessible web design generally makes the web experience better for everyone -- including you. Code the way you hope others would code for you -- or for your aging mom, or your disabled brother, or your child with a disability. Maximum Accessibility provides background and reasoning to address all these concerns, as well as practicable, "nuts & bolts" advice on how to fix problems - or code without problems to begin with.

I highly recommend Maximum Accessibility to *all* individuals and organizations involved with web content development, design, and management. It will be money very well spent. If you're in the industry, buy two and give one to your CIO! ;-)

The book I should have bought my Dad
This is the book I should have bought my Dad when he started to get into computers: it would have saved me a lot of time. The author covers a great deal ground with clear explanations and avoiding jargon at all costs. He even explains some of the weirder computer terminology in a humorous way that makes computing accessible to the new user.

If you or someone you know is new to using a PC this book is well worth having propped up against the monitor for easy reference. If you've been using a computer for a while then it's probably too simple for you, although I call myself an expert and I didn't know that TWAIN stood for "Technology Without An Interesting Name".

Don't judge a book by its cover!
Don't let the cover fool you. This is a must-have book for the person who needs to use a computer and the Internet as tools, but feels uneasy or confused about how to do so safely and has little or no computer background.

It is not as much for those who want to become "do-it-yourself computer gurus" and work on their computers as it is for those who want their computer and Internet connection to work reliably for them. Virtually no technical jargon is used and generally when a computer term is used it is clearly defined or explained.

The title also seems too restrictive. The book covers Internet issues as well as PC issues. "The Healthy PC" is an invaluable reference for both the computer and the Internet, but it is written in such a way as to be worth reading from start to finish as well.

In addition to explanations, definitions, helpful tips and background information, step by step instructions are provided which are fully illustrated with pictures of what the screen will look like at each step of each procedure.

Among the topics covered are ways to maintain and upgrade the computer, optimize performance and reliability of the PC and Internet connection, Internet issues (including safety, security and privacy), and much more.

The author suggests what to do when dealing with threats and annoyances such as viruses, hoaxes, worms, spam, and spyware in addition to e-mail software and firewalls.

We all know that if you look hard enough everything will have its positives and negatives. If I had to nitpick to find a negative, all I could come up with is timeliness, which is out of the author's control when dealing with publciction deadlines.

Reality, especially in the computer industry, changes fast enough that between the time a book is written and the time it is released, some information may become obsolete.

One example is a note on page 80 that states: "There is no alternative method to check your (AOL) email other than using the software provided by AOL or by visiting www.aol.com. As of the writing of this book it is not and has not been, possible to configure any dedicated email program...to work with AOL." That was true until recently when at least two dedicated email programs were released that can handle AOL mail as well as conventional email. Also the author uses AOL 8 rather than AOL 9 when referring to AOL.

Please understand that what was true yesterday may not be true today and what is true today may not be true tomorrow. All any author can do is describe a snapshot in time. The only thing that we know for sure is that everything will change. Possibly the publisher should consider annual updates on either a separate release or subscription basis for books such as this, which provide important information in a rapidly changing environment.

Carey Holzman has done a great job in providing tips, procedures, definitions, explanations, background and peace of mind to a much larger audience than is described on the cover.

Makes life simple
This book is very well organized and quite easy to comprehend. The procedures are quite easy to follow, and enough background info is given to allow the reader to understand why the suggestions will improve PC performance.

How many times have you been reading a "How To" book and said to yourself "Now why didn't I think of that?" If your answer is "never" try reading this book so you can become familiar with the experience.

Don't expect in depth technical jargon that will leave your mind in a clutter. This book is more about taking care of one potential problem, then walking over to see if there is something that can be done about the next. Also don't expect to delve deep into the Windows OS and perform major surgery, instead you will find simple common sense approaches to improving the performance of your PC.
