Medical Bill Survival Guide: What You Need to Know Before You Pay a Dime
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (01 August, 2000)
Author: Martha Pat/Ellis Palmer
Amazon base price: $6.99

Helped me save $11,000
It's hard enough going to the hospital. When the bill comes, it's overwhelming. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and received a 20-page bill when my insurance tried to deny my claim. Using Pat's advice, I scrutinized my bills and medical records. I found billing errors (totalling almost $11,000) a huge medication error (we're filing a lawsuit about that one) and other "fun" surprises. It's amazing that they can run a business like this!

Some of the writing is pretty sensationalistic, which is annoying, and sometimes he takes 3 pages to say what he could have said in two paragraphs. But the information is valid and useful to someone like me who knew nothing about hospitals and billing. It only takes a few hours to read this book. It will open your eyes, help you take control and may even save you some money.

Invaluable information for health care consumers
Everyone who pays medical bills will benefit from the easily-understood information contained in this book. This is a giant step toward the Patient's Financial Bill of Rights. THANK YOU, PAT!!

TRANSLATE THE GREEK OF YOUR HOSPITAL BILL TO COMMON SENSE
If your or any of your friends or relatives have been into a hospital lately, you have noticed that as a patient you were probably treated well, but as a customer you were treated horribly. You would be hard pressed to find any other business that could survive the sort of gross arrogance and incompetence in the way it bills and collects from its customers.

If you assume that everyone--hospital administrators, doctors, and insurance companies alike--would genuinely want their bills to be correct and accurate, you are very very wrong.

This little book shows you through the experience of others, how you too can get your pocket picked, but even more important, it shows you how to protect yourself.

The author shows you how to: how to get a detailed itemized bill, how you can learn their language, how to recognize and reduce excessive charges, how to recognize and remove duplicate charges, how to recognize and reveal hidden charges, how to recognize and reject undocumented charges, how health insurance works today, how to fix some problems before they arise, how to recognize and reverse insurance denials,

Also included, are very helpful chapters on: helpful websites, and a directory of people who can help you get your money back.

The author is a leading consumer advocate for patients, and she gives you the knowledge that you need to fight back. The MEDICAL BILL SURVIVAL GUIDE will help you get back what's yours--and make sure you'll never have to spend an extra, unnecessary dime on the care you deserve, ever again.

A good guidebook for the Bible
This book provides specific guidance for reading each book of the Bible by providing an introduction and summary of each book. This title also tries to tie together the big picture and how each book fits into that overall story. This is helpful because many of us at times get lost in the details. I recommend using this book with How the Read the Bible for All its Worth by the same authors in order to get the most benefit.

The Bible as a Whole
I was exposed to this book as I was visiting Regent College and talking with Gordon Fee in his office there. It was about a week prior to the release of the volume and he was excited about it. Dr. Fee pointed out that this was actually mainly his own project and Dr. Stuart acted primarily as a consultant for the Old Testament material. He explained his vision in very canonical terminology. He wanted to create a reader's guide to the Bible as a whole and explained that this is more of a one-person project in order to give the book unity. Verses are descibed in relation to surrounding passages. These passages are included in the individual book of the Bible. The books are a part of larger section of Scripture (e.g., Genesis is part of the "Narrative of Israel in the Biblical Story"). These sections combine together to make the whole of the Bible itself. There is an overview to the whole Biblical story and one for each section. The chapters about the individual works of the Bible have the following setup (using Genesis as an example):

ORIENTING DATA FOR GENESIS
-Content (brief synopsis)
-Historical Coverage (estimation of time the events take place)
-Emphases (short list)

OVERVIEW OF GENESIS (few paragraphs to summarize material)

SPECIFIC ADVICE FOR READING GENESIS (a page or two of advice)

A WALK THROUGH GENESIS (divides the book into sections and gives short commentary on each section)

The chapters end with a brief concluding paragraph which reiterates the books role in the whole of the Bible. This book is extremely accessible for the layperson wanting a guide to reading the Scriptures. All too often verses and passages are used apart from their biblical story and this guide is a wonderful reminder of those dangers as well as a helpful tool in changing our perspective. Of course it is helpful if you have read How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by these authors, but it is not necessary. I have a degree in biblical studies from Messiah College and whenever I am about to jump into a new book for personal Bible study, I find myself consulting How to Read the Bible Book by Book as a starting place.

Reality Check
The images of New York are as haunting as it is today after the attack. Fee's photographs of the Statue of Liberty and NY are dark, emotional and surreal. It makes you think of a future that can easily become reality if we remain too naive to recognize our own stupidity.

This book is real good
I saw work by James Fee in some galleries and it really blew off the top of my head. He's doing crazy things to an image and the results are great. The subject matter here moves from iconographic images of he US, sunken ships in Southeast Asia, to impressionistic nudes. The great thing about him is none of these images have been digitally manipulated. If you are a photographer and looking for a book to shake things up a bit, James Fee will not dissapoint. What makes this book succeed is that it's not just about the process, there is a real communication happening. I keep coming back to the book for ideas and inspiration. Owning this book will only do good things for you.

Not as thorough as they make you believe...
This dictionary is definitely for the layman's theologian. For those of a somewhat firm grasp of theological terminologies, you're better off sticking with a standard merriam-webster collegiate abridgement, or a larger, deeper theological dictionary. This dictionary is probably for the novice, or beginning student of theology or philosophy. There are many terms NOT included in this dictionary that I find often in theological studies that you'd think would be included. Where's the entry for "semiotics"? Where's the entry for "cosmogony"? Or how about "bibliomancy"? This book is very small, so at least they don't mislead you about its size. There are other theological dictionaries which have better application for the theology student/scholar in mind.

I suggest picking up Westminster's Dictionary of Theological Terminology by McKim for a more complete dictionary.

great choice for laymen and students.
For an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny book it sure goes a long way in helping you understand the most common (yet curious) terms that you encounter in theological books and articles. For those laymen who may feel just a little embarrassed when your friends come over and see an encyclopedia length dictionary of theological terms on the shelf next to your Bible when they know that you still get confused between Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1, this may be the book for you. It also has the distinct advantage of not requiring a day's wages in order to obtain it. A great value. Get it while it is still in the single digits.

Pocket Full of Theology
I have several theology dictionaries which are helpful, but none give such pithy definitions. The definitions are short and to the point, without giving a lot of parallel information. Sometimes you just need a simple definition, not one that is pages long. This book does just that. I found that, while being short, each definition does not limit the meaning of the word too much. There is a good balance between giving open definitions and ones that still mean something. A most helpful resource that I use often.

Original suspense thriller
Out Of Body is an offbeat suspense novel with a metaphysical twist. The protaganist (or possibly the antihero) is Denton, a man who frequently has blackouts in which he leaves his body. As the story begins, Denton (who narrates the tale) has just been released from prison for a crime he believes he never committed. Because of his unusual state of mind, the reader does not completely trust Denton's claim of innocence. After all, if he doesn't always know where he is, he may have done anything. Denton is surrounded by people who are, if not hostile towards him, at least suspicious. He stays with his brother Elliot and his wife Mimi, whose marital difficulties are even further strained by Denton's arrival. Denton gets a job and becomes romantically involved with the bosses' daughter. When it turns out his new love interest has a checkered past, and a violently jealous fiancee, things quickly turn dangerous for the recently parolled Denton. To add to the complexity, one of Denton's cell mates has escaped and is looking for help. Denton seems destined to find trouble, and neither we nor he are surprised when he is suspected of another violent crime. One of the novel's strongest features is the way it captures Denton's frightening states of dissociation. We are swept along, forced to share his condition, as he is propelled out of one scene into another without any memory of the dots connecting. Author Thomas Baum inserts a powerful psychological theme here as well --at an early age, Denton may have witnessed his own father's suicide. Suspense, psychology and the supernatural are combined in an original way to make this a compellingly unique novel.

Let Baum's words into your body!
Having the experience of out-of-body travel, controlled or not, must be a truly awsome experience. Baum keeps the reader caught up in that place where reality ends and a book begins. He allows readers to get confused with Denton, who finds himself in the odd place somewhere near the ceiling or just below the floorboards, hovering about in his cell or peering into his brother's bedroom. The fact that Denton isn't certain of where he is keeps the reader wanting to know more than the character. The next time you drive to work and don't remember the drive, you have entered into Thomas Baum's world of confusion. It's an enticing place to be. Read it, you'll see what I mean.

A Great Book Demands Great Readers
Amongst numerous hermeneutics Books in stores, this one is quite different from others.

Using the multidisciplinary approach, it starts with the historical perspective and canonical approach in the first two chapters. Each chapter also spends a good length for a detail and scholarly illustration of both approaches. The subsequent chapter discusses the theological perspective of Bible reading. In tackling the misconception that theology is unrelated to Bible reading, or even causes bad influence to Christian lives, Packer argues why these are not truth and illustrates how theology nurtures our Bible reading and rescues us from being lost when in the "forest" of the Bible.

The book then discusses Bible reading from a wider context, the sociological, postmodernism perpectives and finally back to context of the reader, the prespective of spirituality: a discussion on the act of Bible reading from a comprehensive context.

The book is an exellent one and the authors offer many sound points, especially the last three chapters. The authors successfully relates Bible reading in the culture of our modern/postmodern world and point out the blindspot of our culture and provide a new perspective using the good "old" truth of the Bible. For example, in the chapter of "postmodern truth", the writer first pointed out the blindspots of both modernism and postmodernism. The former treats the world as an engine, using the same way to extract what we want from the world thus becoming the "metanarrative" of others. The latter is too pessimistic that knowledge is only a construction and there is no truth. Using the fact that human being is only part of the creation, knowledge is not a human construct but a response to our world. As the creation, truth is comprehensible, although not ultimate, but still enough for us to communicate with the world. Moreover, our fallen human nature results that human being uses knowledge to the good as well as the bad. While the postmodernism holds the idea that knowledge only serves a purpose to obtain power to suspress/control others, we cannot ignore the other side of the truth as previously mentioned.

In view of readibility, I would give a relatively lower score. Probably, this is caused by the apporach it used. Although multidisciplinary approach gives many different perspectives on Bible reading, written from the hand of the scholars, it also demands the readers equipped with multidisciplinary basic background knowledge. For instance, the basic knowledge of postmodernism, existentialism, Marxism and so forth. In addition, a good basic theological knowledge is important to understand the points made by the readers or else it is very difficult to follow the points made by the author.

Deep insight into the inner meaning of fairy tales
In this volume Marie-Louise Von Franz takes six fairy tales and analyses them from a Jungian perspective. Marie-Louis's insight and clear writing style make this book very readible and her use of Jungian constructs is only used to open up a deeper level of meaning in the stories not to obscure or twist the story to fit Jungian concepts. I highly recommend it.

It's great to have books to sing along to, and this is one of the best. The illustrations are great, the lyrics are fun, and kids of all ages enjoy the song. A great version of the song done by kids is on the CD Treblemakers ...

Medical Billing : The Bottom Line - Revised Edition

Not for me
I would not recommend this book. Too many mathmatical errors and not enough information. Little to folksy for the image that a professional would want to present. I recommend Understanding Health Insurance by Rowell.

Overview of the business is the best I've read so far.
Medical Billing Revised Edition is the best book I have read so far concerning medical billing for the home based entrepreneur. Not only does it outline how to set up an office and what to expect during presentations and contact with a prospective cleint, it goes into the basics of medical billing and what different things mean. I think the author did an outstanding job and I did not see the errors the other reader found. I think it is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Medical Billing The Bottom Line
This is an awesome book, I don't think I will ever get rid of it! Great resource tool for the Newbie Medical Biller. Out of all the books I have purchased this is "the Best" Hope she comes out with another book.

Too general
There was not enough information as far as I was concerned. I think there are other books out there that are more specific and contain far more information.

Not enough depth into the subject.
Vendors mentioned are not in business now. The topics are way to generic. He doesn't even own his own business and I still had so many questions after reading this book. I don't ususally comment on books but felt there were other books out there which provided more insight.

Excellent resource for those interested in medical billing.
I read Rick Benzel's first edition years ago and found it to be highly informative. His second edition is clearly researched and reflects the changes in the healthcare industry. I would recommend this book as a prerequisite for anyone contemplating self employment in this field. He covers all areas and gives a comprehensive look at the healthcare service business. As a medical billing service owner and consultant for 18 plus years, I feel qualified to give this book two thumbs up!!
