An insider's look at the forces impacting modern NT versions
Are you aware of the many textual changes, not due to translation, that have affected New Testament versions since the Reformation? Perhaps you have been puzzled at the addition, subtraction or differences between verses, even whole paragraphs, that exist among the translations from that time up until today. If you wonder why your Bible is changing, you need to read this book.

My first Bible was the King James (or Authorized) version. I read from it, studied it and cherished it as my most prized possession. Unfortunately, I also found much of it hard to understand. Naturally, as many Christians do, and have done, I started looking at more modern translations of that noble Book, and what I discovered was disturbing.

Though I found many of the newer translations to be much easier to read, I discovered that certain verses were missing. Not translated differently, but MISSING! I wondered what was going on. After reading further, I discovered that other verses were added, and, once in a while, entire historical accounts were either entirely missing, significantly changed or noted to be of doubtful originality. I had to get to the bottom of WHY these changes were made, and WHO made them-- so I began what to this day has proved one of the most rewarding studies of my life: the study of New Testament textual criticism.

Textual criticism is the science that attempts to reconstruct the purest, most original form of text from the many thousands of, at times, conflicting and divergent documents that span, in the case of the New Testament, many centuries. This volume, actually a compilation of seventeen studies, provides a fascinating, insightful look into the discoveries, and the theories that attempt to accommodate them, that have impacted the very form of today's New Testament.

Authored by two experts in the field, this volume will serve as an excellent introduction to the science of New Testament textual criticism. You will learn the basic terms and ideas endemic to this field of study, and survey the varying methods (and underlying theories) used to determine the most original form of the Christian New Testament. I highly recommend this valuable book-- with an important qualification.

The potential reader should be advised that this volume is written by two individuals who, though recognized authorities in the field, represent a particular theoretical approach, popularly known as reasoned eclecticism, that is only one among several currently taken. As with any historical science, differences of opinion exist among the experts, so proceed with an open mind, and enjoy!

The Best for Beginning Exegesis
When I was first looking for a book to teach me basic exegetical skills, I ran into Don Carson and asked him for advice. Without hesitation he recommended this book. He was absolutely right. Having come through my M.Div. and not using this book once as an assigned reading, I can honestly say that this book has taught me more about exegesis than any other single work. (Though Carson's book Exegetical Fallacies is excellent as well).

One reviewer on this list states that the book has no "redemptive-historical" approach to it. Two things to say in response to this. Firstly, when writing any book on hermeneutics, this is a touchy issue. There are many excellent scholars out there who disagree with this type of approach and to over-emphasize that in a beginners volume will likely get the new exegete into trouble by seeing too much typology. Secondly, the book does address a redemptive-historical approach with the "already/not-yet" tension. The authors handle this issue with great wisdom, I believe. I myself hold to "salvation-historical" hermeneutic and I am very satisfied with this volume.

I have given this book to many Christians who are fairly young and not too familiar with biblical interpretation and have been very pleased with the way it has helped them, just as it helped me.

I highly recommend this book!

Herman Who????
I have used this book as a textbook for several years as a great source for teaching Hermeneutics. I did 13 week course covering the definitions and rules and then we went to the Epistles as a genre. The only complain that I received, consistantly was that the course should have been longer to cover the other genres, escpecially Acts. The only lacking part is the the book could have used several charts to show the connections and relationships between exergesis and hermeneutics. This is a must own; must read; must teach; must .....

One of the best introductory texts available
This is the foundational understanding that everyone should know before studying the Bible. Although it is written in an easy to understand style it is still full of very valuable information. For example, people often ask why there are so many different translations of the Bible. The authors do an excellent job of showing the complications and difficulties of translating and how different versions of a verse could each be just as viable as an accurate translation.

The authors also deal with the problems of interpretation, exegesis, historical and cultural context and literary conventions of the time. They look at the narrative style of the Old Testament and its function as well as Acts, the various parables, prophets, psalms, wisdom literature, and the revelation. You may not agree with every aspect of their treatment of the various books and literary styles, but this is the best treatment of the problems of translation and interpretation that I have come across to date. "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth" is highly recommend for anyone interested in Bible translation or interpretation.

A Great Mystery/Thriller with a Wonderful Female Protagonist
I was really on the edge of my seat with this book. It was such a great story with amazing characters. The antagonist, Walker, is truly superb. Original, funny (without trying to be), confused yet brutal. Really the most fascinating character I've read in a novel in years. I also liked that the protagonist is a regular woman on a mission. She's not a detective or superhero but a college professor's wife who, however misguided, decides to avenge the death of her father that occurred when she was a small child. I look forward to reading Gregg Main's next book.

Exciting relationship thriller

In Dallas, the affair is over, but the lingering damage may cost history professor Pete Donelly his marriage. His spouse Ellen informs him that she needs a few days away from him. She goes to the home of her sister, Susan. However, when Pete calls Susan's number, he learns she never arrived nor was she expected. Pete begins to search for his missing spouse.

Over three decades ago, Ellen witnessed two assailants murder her father. The police arrested and the court convicted Franklin Walker only. Franklin has just been released from prison. Ellen, abetted by her mother, seeks vengeance and has gone to Los Angeles to destroy her life long nightmare-Franklin. Unbeknownst to the triangle of players is the individual in the center who actually killed Ellen's father. He realizes that he is suddenly being pursued and refuses to be the prey. Instead the predator arranges for a final confrontation in Santa Fe where he plans to be the only one to walk away.

Though a strictly by the book tale, EVERY TRACE is an excellent debut thriller that should garner new author Gregg Main a mainstream audience. The story line is filled with action and relentlessly increasing tension. The characters are intriguing, especially Franklin, the nightmare killer. The climax has several twists that add to the plot. Mr. Main demonstrates he has the ability to be one of the top writers of relationship thrillers.

THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ
I am an avid reader and I was spellbound by this book. It was excellent, I couldn't put it down until I finished it 1 day later. I have beem searching the internet for anymore books Gregg Main has written. It stated that'Every Trace" was his first and I just hope it isn't his last.

A word for all seasons
One of the most attractive features we sometimes find in NT commentaries is the proposed reconstruction of historical circumstances or of social/cultural setting that serves as the framework for the whole study and accounts for all the details in a consistent way. To the extent that it is hypothetical we can never be sure matters were as reconstructed; to the extent that everything comes together so well we must admit the possibility. Gordon Fee, in his commentary on First Corinthians (NICNT, 1987), posited a history of conflict between the Corinthian church and Paul having to do with Paul's apostolic authority and with his gospel, and came up with an exegetical tour de force. Fee duplicates the feat in this commentary on Philippians. He understands the whole letter in terms of first century Greco-Roman conventions of letter writing, specifically letters of "friendship" and of "moral exhortation", applied to the respective situations of Pual and the Philippians when the letter was written, but typically transformed by Paul. This apostle's overriding concern is Christ and the gospel. As Fee says, "For in Paul's hands everything turns into gospel..." The three-way bond between Paul, the Philippians and Christ "is the glue that holds the letter together from beginning to end." The exposition accords with this understanding and with the chronological scheme on pages 38-39 (which became a point of reference that I returned to several times as I read through the commentary), and succeeds in presenting a coherent whole.

The content of the letter allows ample scope for theological consideration, to which Fee responds with insight (many insights). A striking example is the concept of theology in Philippians taking the form of story (p. 47); thus the famous Christ hymn (2:6-11) is consistently referred to as the Christ narrative. Fee agrees with other commentators before him that the purpose of the hymn (narrative) was the presentation of Christ as the ultimate model to be emulated by the Philippians (love, humility, obedience); but at the same time this passage represents "the heart of Pauline theology" because it summarizes so movingly the central role of Christ and the true nature of God. If Paul is passionate about Christ, so is Fee, and it shows through in a number of eloquent passages. He is no mere academic; to him, what Paul told the Philippians in the first century remains "a word for all seasons" (Fee's expression).

Technical matters and interaction with other scholars are mostly restricted to the very full and rewarding footnotes. I can't help thinking, though, that a few of these are needlessly argumentative. At least where Hawthorne is concerned, I checked some of Fee's objections and found Hawthorne (WBC, vol. 43) to be equally convincing. The oft-repeated advice stands: Always consult more than one commentary. This does not detract from the value of Gordon Fee's contribution; it should be on the shortlist of everyone looking for a solid, detailed, and readable study of Paul's Letter to the Philippians. [Four and a half stars, had fractional ratings been possible.]

layman's dream
If you are looking for a readable commentary that goes deeper into the meaning of Phillipians and it's application today but you aren't a pastor or a bible school student, then I would highly recommend this one. I thought his comments on the structure and intent of the letter were outstanding and a revelation to me. I think there is also much in this book for the serious student but for a layman like me just wanting to understand what God could say to me through Paul's little letter, this book is a dream come true!

don't leave homw without it
I have been doing a Sunday School classes on Philippians and have found this commentary indispensible. It is thorough beyond expectation, insightful to the core and complete with life applicaiton sections following each section. I have been blessed and challenged so often by what he has to say. The Christ Hymn (so some - I prefer Christ Story), 2:5-11, had me in tears of joy and worship. It's a must have for any serious student of the Word. You won't regret this purchase.

How to Maximize Fees in Professional Service Firms

Buy Million Dollar Consulting....
and save the seven bucks. All this information is already contained within Alan's other works -- particularly "Million Dollar Consulting" and "Getting Started in Consulting". Also, the book isn't really 52-pages -- its only 21 (I counted). Alan prints his info on the right-hand page with a relavent quote on the left-hand page. Also, he began counting pages long before the manuscript begins (table of contents is page #5) and long after (for instance, 2-pages of advertisements for his other products/services and 2-pages of blank-pages, aka "notes"). Additional warning: Some other reviewers have mentioned that Alan tends to be a little self aggrandizing -- often coming off as superior and pompous. I have to agree. No doubt, Alan provides absolutely terrific advice; But I strongly urge you to use the seven bucks to purchase one of his other books instead.

Excellent book and to the point
This is an an unbelievably good little book. There is not a word of fluff or hype in the book, and is basically a consolidation of the book Million Dollar Consulting. If you buy it, and I recommend you do, read it very slowly as the words are chosen carefully.

Here's what the book will not do, however:

1) The book will not hype you up to win, win win and motivate you. Dr. Weiss assumes you are already motivated to improve yourself and your business.

2) The book will not teach you your craft such as consulting, being an attorney, etc. You need to take specific classes to acquire the skills.

3) The book will not be very applicable unless you are already fairly busy and have a fairly good number of clients. If you are very hungry for business, you will miss many of the concepts presented.

However, if you have the above issues figured out, Dr. Weiss's book has a great potential to take you to a new level.

Outstanding
A tiny book with a very high content density. The reviewer saying below that it's a replay of Million-$ Consulting is somewhat right, it is a highly compressed version of some of the ideas from the aforementioned bigger book, but for those new to this author, or those who simply haven't read it, or those not ready to invest the time in the bigger book this brochure will be invaluable.

One caveat: there are many euphemisms in this book, and to fully appreciate the advice given therein you need to have had some experience, so that you can relate the presented concepts to the actual events in your past. Aha, you'll be saying, THAT'S why it went the way it did then; aha, I wish I had articulated this or that particular idea before. OK, so now Mr Weiss articulated it for you, very concisely, straight to the point, with no hot air whatsoever.

With all that in mind, "How to Maximize Fees..." is a great little book, and I can wholeheartedly recommend absolutely anyone to read it. Then, when (and if) you have more time, after you know Weiss offers meaningful advice and not going to treat you to another load of inflated banalities and feel-good preachy bs, you can move on to his other, more extensive works.

Nice book
I agree with the first review for this book, "A GOOD SHORT READ". It is better than "The Princess Test" because Rosella doesn't get so lucky with her prince like Laurelei (the heroine of "Princess Test"). I don't think Rosella lets people walk all over her. She's just nice, and has a kind heart. And she DOES stand up for herself in the end. If you like funny, twisted fairy tales, when the bad guys REALLY get what they deserve, read this book.

The Fairy's Mistake
Fairys, elves, dragons, magical castles. If you like any of these you will love this great book. The Fairy's Mistake is a great adventure book for children. The story is full of twists and excitement. The Fairy's Mistake takes place in an imaginary place called Snettering-on-Snakes where a young girl named Rossela is given a gift by a fairy for her kindness. The fairy's gift does not seem so great after awhile. To find out how Rossela deals with her problem, read this wonderful book.

a wonderful book!
From the opening line of once upon a time to the closing happily ever after, this book enchanted me with its hilarious take on the classic tale. Charmingly written, this book is for all ages. "The Fairy's Mistake" can be read in one sitting, since it is fairly short and easy reading. Any reader who enjoys traditional fairy tales should definetly read this book.

Start charging what you're worth--today!
This book is an absolute 'must-have' for any consultant who wants to dramatically increase sales, profits and fees. Before I even finished the book, I had two great ideas that can bring me 'new' income, worth hundreds--probably thousands--of times the cost of the book. Written in Alan's inimitable style, 'Value-Based Fees' is engaging, inspiring and loaded with down-to-earth, real-life examples, plans, guidelines and instructions to launch your income into the stratospheric range. Whether you want to jumpstart your consulting career, or boost an already solid consulting business to a totally new level--you will want to get this book!

Valeu-Based Fees a bridge from the conceptual to the real
Alan Weiss' book on value-based fees is a must for anyone who wants to have a successful consulting practice and live and retire to tell about it. While his advice is invaluable to both experienced or new consultant alike, Alan bings a practicality and a simple series of examples, worksteps and checklists to make it real. Making it real is ultimately the most important because charging what you are worth means changing both mindset and behavior, which for people over 40 is tough. I heartily recommend this book for anyone selling their professional services.

Far Beyond Million Dollar Consulting
While Alan Weiss's eternal best-seller "Million Dollar Consulting" remains the most valuable book overviewing consulting practices, this book takes the reader into the actual mechanics and philosophy of value based fees. The transition will be worth six figures annually, because it's been worth it to me. The single negative review claiming this book repeats "Million Dollar" is far off base as far as I'm concerned (or the reviewer didn't read this book). For example, Value Based Fees deals with converting hourly clients, setting up retainers, combatting the competition's lower fees and a wealth of detail that the more primary book doesn't touch. Get this book today, because you're leaving money on the table every day it's unread.

Dated Material
The items covered in the book are basic and need to be discussed. However, the sample items and some tables used show data from 1988. This info is not useful.

A keeper....
This book came just in time. My consulting practice took off suddenly and I literally dashed to amazon to search for a book with information I could apply right away. It was an invaluable aid. And after a couple of years, it is still a useful reference, always close at hand.

Highly Recommended.
This book is definately worth purchasing -- particularly for those new to independent consulting. Although the copyright date is 1990 (Howard died in the early/mid 1990s and the book hasn't been updated since), most of the material is timeless. It is often difficult for independent consultants to get sample copies of proposals, interim reports, and final reports. This is particularly the case for those new to consulting without an established peer network. This book solves that delimma and illustrates the marketing role of the proposal and subsequent interim and final reports. Are you serious about building your consulting business? Prove it to yourself: buy a copy of this book today.
