short but very sweet
Gordon fee one of the best new testament scholars, wrote a short but very helpful little 31 page book on the Word of Faith theology .....Great work for so little book....

An excellent, biblical analysis
This is a tremendous little book. Gordon Fee is a world-class New Testament scholar and a Pentecostal. He discusses the "theology" of the health and wealth teachers and preachers and how they take Scripture out of context. With all the imbalances and biblical distortions going on in the Pentecostal/charismatic scene today, Dr. Fee's book is refreshing and much-needed.

Don't miss this one!

Releasing and Thought Provoking
This book clearly presents a thorough exegisis on the key proof texts cited to justify the popular Health and Wealth teachings. He makes the point that scripture must mean to us what it meant to its author and his original readers. For example the popular verse "Beloved I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health" was merely John's personal wish for Gaius. That is what it meant then and so what right has anyone to suggest it means anything different today. Gordon Fee also examines healing and whether or not it is part of the Atonement.

Gordon Fee is charismatic and starts of the book almost apologetically.

I think this book brings balance to the body of Christ and I thoroughly recommend it.

What to Charge: Pricing Strategies for Freelancers and Consultants
Published in Paperback by Aletheia Pubns (01 January, 2000)
Author: Laurie Lewis
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

What to Charge -- the most practical book you'll read
The blurb on the back of the book is right! What to Charge is one of the most practical books you'll ever read. It provides a wealth of concrete information for freelancers and consultants on how to negotiate a fair price for themselves -- and for their clients. Based on the information in the book, I accepted my first freelance writing job on a per word instead of per hour payment basis -- and ended up making three times an hour what I would have! I did not have to negotiate these rates, I simply chose the more profitable of two options offered me by the company based on information from the book about how to estimate the price of a job. It's essential reading for new and experienced freelancers.

Price It Right
"Am I asking enough for this job?" "Will I lose the job if I ask for more?" "How often can I raise my rates?" If these and other pricing questions have ever bedeviled you, What to Charge will remove some of the guess work for you. Clearly, concisely, and with many examples, Laurie Lewis discusses how to develop a successful pricing strategy, analyze pricing decisions, negotiate rates with clients, and avoid pricing pitfalls. With suggestions that are simple, practical, and easy to follow, this book gives sound advice for overcoming the "How much should I charge?" dilemma and is a "must" for would-be consultants and experienced freelancers alike.

Answers THE question freelancers struggle with ...
Deciding what to charge is a basic issue freelancers struggle with constantly. As a soon-to-be freelance editor and proofreader, I found this book immensely useful AND inspiring. On a practical level, it offers a truly rational approach to setting consulting fees--no matter what field you're in. Second, and most importantly, it teaches you not to undervalue yourself and, consequently, your services.Any freelance consultant, even the most experienced, will find much of value in this book!

Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature
This book serves as an excellent introduction to the traveling exhibit by the same name organized by the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine. It provides the reader with a look at Mary Shelley, the times in which she was raised, and the influences that contributed to her writing the original Frankenstein book. There are both color and black and white illustrations which afford the reader a better understanding of this period of time and the context in which the book was written and published. The second section of the book looks at the Frankenstein myth in popular culture and his transformation from an articulate, self-educated being to a grunting brute capable of cruelty without remorse. The 1931 film version starring Boris Karloff is a typical example of this as well as the toys, games, breakfast cereal, coloring books, etc. which came later. The final section of the book addresses the present day concerns which have evolved from this book such as cloning and xenografting (the use of animal parts for tranplantation). The book is a masterful summary of the Frankenstein story nearly 200 years in the making.

A MONSTER OF A BOOK!!
Mary Shelley's creature, fashioned from sundry body parts and zapped back to life by the good ol' Dr. F, has been fascinating and frightening us more than 200 years after Shelley wrote the book. Here, Susan E. Lederer, an associate professor of the history of medicine at Yale University, disinters that Frankenstein legend and legacy. Yes, this is an exploration of the cultural and sociological relevance of myth and monster; what sounds like it could be deadly dull is actually powerful prose, a riveting look at the monster and myth's impact on pop culture, science, advertising and politics. There are also handfuls of incredible color and black-and-white photos of the Monster in films, consumer products, cartoons, books and other myriad media. A book to --- dare we? --- die for.

A rip, roarin' ride!
It takes a near miracle to get this NY editor and her rodeo cowboy to the altar safe and sound, especially when their engagement goes bust two weeks before the wedding because of a surprise that doesn't sit well with the bride-to-be. But the couple teams up when their friend Cindy runs off with no explanation. Five states, three vehicles, two horse trailers, and a one-ton bull later, they locate her. But their troubles are far from over. Love, love these two!

A GREAT FOLLOWUP after the two first...
If you read the two first of the AUSTIN-STONER-Files' books, by Stephen Bly - why are you still wondering if you're going to buy this one? It's entertaining, it's funny, it's good, it's great, it's even more. Have a good laugh.

Excellent Book
Dr. Gordon Fee did an excellent job with this book. It is actually a compilation of previous papers and speeches into one book, although this in no way hinders the quality of the book. This theologically sound and scripturally grounded book is more than just theology. His underlying concern is obviously for spiritual growth, making this spiritually and intellectually challenging at the same time. He presents many ideas that are not 'new' but are often skimmed over in the Bible. It is a must read for those with questions about women in the ministry, or the role of the Holy Spirit in the Church. I recommend this book 100%.

Reflections on the art of attending to the biblical text
In Listening To The Spirit In The Text, Gordon Fee (professor of New Testament studies at Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) has gathered together his best studies and reflections on the art of attending to the biblical text critically, yet with spiritual sensitivity. Ranging over a host of relevant New Testament themes, these insightful essays shed light on the meaning of Scripture for the spiritual life of the church. Fee's twelve engaging and informative essays are divided into two sections: The Text and the Life in the Spirit and The Text and the Life of the Church. Listening To The Spirit In The Text is enthusiastically recommended contribution to personal and academic New Testament studies reading lists and library collections.

Power/Holiness/Evangelism: Rediscovering God's Purity, Power
I purchased this book as a second thought, and found out I got more than I bargained for. The level of expertise and experience with God impressed me initially, but it was the depth of each topic presented by each of the authors that shocked me. When dealing with God and spiritual subjects in books, there are so many approaches, and many that are really weird, but in this book the contributing authors do much to show by scriptures and experience the reality of the need for the church to be seeking God's power, holiness, and evangelistic outreach to the human race. This is not a book of testimonies alone, but scriptures and the reality of the topics listed in the title. Another book that assisted me in certain sections of this book was I Give You Authority by Charles Kraft. Though much different in subject, it assisted me in understanding some things that are occurring in the South American churches. I highly recommend this book for one's bookself, not only for reading, but as a text book for what is happening in Christianity today.

Unity and Passion for God
The chapters are written by individuals from various backgrounds who are sensing the Holy Spirit drawing them into a closer relationship with God. This purity of heart has been documented in past and present revivals around the world.

Very comprehensive guide to health care capitation payments
THE CAPITATION SOURCEBOOK:

A Practical Guide To Managing At-Risk Arrangements

Capitation presents a unique dilemma to health care information executives grappling with increased demands for more data and information processing capability while revenue continues to decline at their institutions. This is the reality of managed care today.

A comprehensive new book, THE CAPITATION SOURCEBOOK: A Practical Guide To Managing At-Risk Arrangements, published by Boland Healthcare, describes the challenge of capitated reimbursement to lower costs and improve care at the same time. In six hundred plus pages and thirty chapters written by operational experts in the field, it explains how to manage risk more efficiently and how to design information systems to better meet the needs of patients, practitioners, and managed care organizations. This is a daunting task particularly for health care systems and providers making the transition from fee-for-service to risk sharing arrangements. The Capitation Sourcebook includes over a hundred tables and many figures that illustrate the types of information required by organizations to be successful in managing different risk arrangements. However, the book goes far beyond a traditional facts and figures approach. It presents a conceptual framework for understanding why capitation is now the driving force in managed health care and what this means in terms of operational and clinical requirements for day-to-day managers. Information is key and the primary mechanism for aligning financial incentives among providers and redesigning patient care systems in order to reduce costs.

The book is rich in content. It challenges CIOs to rethink how to manage data and information to create the necessary knowledge base for institutions involved in risk contracts. It points to dozens of case studies where key stakeholders -- physicians, hospitals, and delivery systems -- have been successful in building collaborative financial models that distribute risk and income equitably. The authors demonstrate that success depends on a philosophical commitment to better care, a business strategy that drives operational efficiency, and an information system that supports accountability and timely feedback.

Part one of the book introduces the main themes of performance accountability and business strategy. Part two details how to align performance and payment criteria. Part three explains a number of practical techniques for managing the transition to prepaid incentives and physician compensation models for phasing in capitation. It also includes the information components required to manage Medicaid capitation. Part four focuses on the information requirements and financial controls for managing provider networks. Part five deals with clinical resource consumption and utilization management issues. Part six describes negotiation principles and actuarial cost models to evaluate contracts. Part seven highlights specialty and ancillary service contracting guidelines. The book concludes with a discussion of ethical issues in risk-based contracting arrangements. A very useful and complete glossary of managed care terms is also included.

This book should be required reading for all health care executives and CIOs. It painstakingly identifies data requirements and report formats for monitoring provider and health plan performance. It also challenges information executives to reassess the value of what they do in terms of lowering the cost of care and increasing the health status and functioning of patients. This is not the traditional yardstick for measuring performance but it is one that managed care buyers are beginning to use in selecting their health care suppliers and partners in the future.

CIOs should pay careful attention to the strategic advice given in this book as well as practical methods of how to operationally manage the information requirements of capitation. The book's editor, health care industry expert Peter Boland, has once again correctly anticipated market trends and documents what providers and CIOs must do to be successful in this new environment.
