Paradoxes of Successful Innovation
As the subtitle correctly indicates, Chakravorti explains how to bring innovations to market in a connected world. His contributions in this book to our understanding of both the difficulties and opportunities to do so are substantial. Acknowledging his academic roots, he acknowledges that he "developed an appreciation for a first- principles approach to strategy and decisions...how first principles translate into the framing of trade-offs and lead to timely action." Over time, he learned that true insight "comes from connecting the dots across multiple landscapes [and that] such dots lurk in the unlikeliest corners." He allows his reader to recognize those "corners" and to accompany him as he carefully but rigorously explores the connected world.

I especially appreciate his dry but delightful wit, perhaps most evident in the final chapter whose head note is a quotation from Thelonious Monk: "You know what's the loudest noise in the world, man? The loudest noise in the world is silence." Without apparent effort, he invites his reader to consider the significance of the Galton-Gould evolutionary pool table, a metaphor which suggests that a market is the polyhedron-shaped ball." perhaps recalling John Nash's insight, he suggests that when innovation arrives on the scene (i.e. in a market), it creates disequilibrium. "It is in this situation of rest [i.e. when the "ball" has stopped] which may be viewed as gridlock by some and as a stable market by others -- that innovations in a connect must pry apart."

Given the process of inquiry and exploration which has been completed in the prior chapters, I was intrigued by how Chakravorti achieves at least a temporary synthesis of so many different (sometimes contradictory) factors which interact throughout the innovation cycle: "the eureka moment; the development of technology to give life to an idea; and the creation of an organization to produce and commercialize the innovation." As we all know, few innovative ideas ever reach their intended market and fewer yet survive thereafter. There is indeed a natural selection process during any campaign to bring an innovation into the connected world. Chakravorti suggests four aspects of that campaign:

1. "Qualifying the endgame and, in the process, choosing between several strategic options at the outset;

2. "Orchestrating the changes necessary across the network of players through a mechanism that propagates the innovator's selective interventions into the wider network;

3. "Actively managing with the critical agents that will pass on the innovation's influence; and

4. "Making appropriate choices on how to commit to strategies that lead to certain endgames in the face of uncertainty -- depending on the situation, one must choose between making a bet, reserving options, and seeking insurance."

Paraphrasing an ancient aphorism, Chakravorti suggests that market imperfection is the mother of innovation because it creates the need to innovate both in terms of a given product or service and in terms of the campaign by which to guide it to market. and then through natural selection to at least temporary security....that is, until another innovation (which accommodates the aforementioned four aspects) eliminates the need for it.

I agree completely with Chakravorti that the "slow pace of change is good news for the strategic innovator. In fact, it is essential news." Obviously, when any organization plans to take a new product or service to market, it faces formidable competition and all manner of challenges, only some of which are posed by competitors. (How many innovative products or services have never survived internal barriers which may include what Jim O'Toole has characterized as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom") In this brilliant book, Chakravorti suggests a number of specific strategies and tactics to help achieve market penetration and eventual success in a connected world. There is also an important lesson to be learned from one of Aesop's fable, "The Tortoise and the Hare": At least in some situations, only a "slow pace" can achieve "fast change."

Fantastic!!!
I have never in my life read such an insightful book. It clearly lays out the structure of economics and helps diversify the playing field in terms of market infrastructure. Witty and well thought out, a deserved 5 star book.

Delightfully written on a truly complex and timely topic
This is one of the best written books I have read in a long time. The author must have pored over the crafting of every word. It is a serious book and yet it is quite a funny book. Overall it is clear he knows what he is talking about in terms of how real companies act and the game theory behind their actions. And it is about something that most people I know think a lot about. The book is on bringing innovations and new ideas to market. I read it as having much wider social and political consequences because it really does offer a way for us to understand how things work -- or don't -- in our super-connected world. With terrorism and SARS and globalization risks and the proliferation of the internet we are really connected in so many ways. I came away from the Slow Pace of Fast Change with, as the author puts it, a new "mindset" to understand and even strategize in this interconnected reality, where the network is both your best friend and your worst enemy. I know of Moore's law as the rule of the 90s--like everyone else I and everyone else I know lived and breathed it. Slow Pace...will I think give us a rule that may last even longer: Demi Moore's law. Cute, but really quite brilliant if you think about it.
Every chapter in the book helps develop a rich set of ideas interwoven with really well-told tales of strategic games among the best known companies in the world -- and even some that have since flamed out, for reasons the book helped make me understand. The tales of real world games among AT&T, the Chinese, WorldCom, Comcast, Microsoft read like a novel. Even though that particular chapter had the least new material in terms of concepts, the stories and strategic analyses alone made its presence more than worthwhile.
A deceptively easy read but it's deep stuff. I would read it again.

Put One in Your Glove Compartment
I do book reviews for an integrated healthcare system in Austin, TX. and found this book through it's publisher. Of course it is great for our diabetes education division whom I have forwarded it to, but it is also useful for anyone who wants to be intentional about eating in a healthy way.

Fast Lane is easy to use, and easy to incorporate in your overall nutrition plan. We are surrounded by fast food. When you pay attention to the menu you can go out without sabotaging your own best intentions. This slim little book is a great tool.

An Indispensible Guidebook
For anyone who counts calories, cholesterol, or carbohydrates, this is a fantastic source of information about the fast food we all eat so often. My child is diabetic, and this book is so helpful for "counting the carbs" in her diet.

This kind of lucid writing is rare in business books.
The clarity of the studies and writing used to explain Asia's consumer markets pre and post-meltdown, makes this book a really easy, and enjoyable read. I would recommend it to anybody who, like me, is trying to sell into the vast Asian market and needs some guidelines on the current consumer trends. I am most impressed with the authors' style as well as the thoroughly accessible lay-out and chapters headings that enable the reader to dip in and out at random. I have used this book as a resource for a number of trips and presentations that I have given in the past few months. Better than most.

This is one of the best books around on the subject.
I'm a frequent traveller to Hong Kong and the surrounding area, and the authors have really hit on something. South -east Asia is still in recession, but it's not a recession as we know it. It's merely slowed-down to a less frenetic pace.

My last visit to the area was in late December when I visited Hong Kong and Macau. I found this book really reflected what was going on after the 'meltdown', and is packed full of really invaluable info.

A Tentative Recommendation
Gods Chosen Fast is a comprehensive survey of fasting as presented in the Bible. Wallis does three things: Firsts he pleads for the renewal of fasting in the church as a channel to regain its lost apostolic power; second, he tells us the benefits of fasting; and finally, he tells us how to fast.

I appreciate the chapter on freedom from Satans power. Like Neil Anderson, Wallis believes much of what troubles Christians today can be attributed to the release once dormant demonic forces as Gods Spirit is being poured out afresh. For too long the church has either ignored Satans role in binding Christians or has attributed demon possession to psychological pathos. Wallis commonsense approach to fasting was good. He points out that fasting has been abused in the past, but that abuse does not negate the biblical imperative to fast, or the power to be gained through fasting.

Unfortunately, after chapter nineteen, the book goes downhill. The chapter on health and healing was terrible. The evidence he submits for the healing power of fasting was anecdotal and the authorities he cites were suspect at best. On page 117 he quotes as a medial source a certain Herbert M. Shelton who writes for the Natural Hygiene Press. Does Wallis know that one can find a doctor to endorse almost any quack scheme? Where were the articles from the American Medial Association or the New England Journal of Medicine? His exegesis of the story of the Egyptian abandoned by the Amalekities who was revived after being rescued by David is amazing. How in the world could one attribute going three days without food for the poor man's revival? Did not the food and water David provided have something to do with the Egyptians regaining his health?

I give this book a tentative recommendation. It is of uneven quality and the documentation is weak. It does, however, present a much broader picture of fasting than Foster is able to do in his book (The Celebration of Discipline).

The Definitive Classic on Prayer & Fasting!
This book explores the depths and heights of fasting in layman's terms. Arthur Wallis shows the practical and spiritual side of fasting and how effective an agent-of-change it can be. I have never read a better book on the subject. A must-read for those who wish to embark on a prayer & fasting journey. God bless you as you read this amazing little book.

Complete, concise, informative, and interesting
My pastor lent me this book after I had questions for him about fasting. I was able to read through this book in one sitting, but it pretty much addressed all of my questions. It's quite enjoyable and easy to read. It's very biblically based, but it does address the physical side of fasting as well. It's very much worth reading!

Evocative, sensually charged fiction
Professional ethics are what keep a good writer honest. Nia Phillips is feeling the pinch of her personal life intruding upon her professional life, however, with the magazine article her editor at the Eastern Edge wants her to write. Nia is to interview the five most eligible bachelors of the East Coast, as selected by the top echelon of said magazine. Amongst them is basketball coach, Daniel Strahan, the sports celebrity all of Boston seems to adore (especially with the winning streak his team is currently on). Once upon a time, Nia was married to sports journalist, David Phillips. His obsession with basketball -- and his philandering ways -- killed their marriage with a bloodless efficiency. Her dislike of the sport and athletes in general is therefore understandable.

Rather than embracing the limelight as Nia expects, Daniel refuses to grant her an interview. His refusal is coldly stated, but the frost in his eyes is warmed by Nia's effortless allure and her frank honesty. Her violet eyes flash with indignation when he accuses her of trying to write a flashy expose, of trying to dig up dirt on his personal life. Their first meeting is anything but cordial, and yet Daniel and Nia fell the pulling of an inexplicable attraction. When their tempers cool, they realize they have a great deal in common; but will those commonalities smooth the way for a relationship or the inevitability of heartache? Love is a game you play for keeps, after all. Daniel is on the road, traveling from state to state, with troubling regularity. How can a relationship survive the stress of such conflicting schedules?

When love goes into overtime, the outcome is anyone's guess.

Is it any wonder Ms. Delinsky's backlist has been reissued? FAST COURTING is a sweetly simplistic and nostalgic read fans of the genre will eagerly embrace. Everything old is new again: the heady rush of true love, the terrifying indecisiveness and the potent appeal of an old-fashioned courtship. (Videocassette recorders were still a novelty in the early eighties. That's the only anachronism I noticed, however. Otherwise, this novel has surprisingly modern sensibilities, considering it was first published in 1983). Dan and Nia's dance of courtship is marred only by a persistent belief that any relationship they pursue is purely transitory. Their divergent professions are difficult to mesh with a stable home life, or so they believe.

Dan's rather extreme aversion to the press and members of the media is never explained. His personal life is apparently spartan and scandal-free, so why all the fuss? A reader is urged to look beyond that mystery to the character himself. Dan is far from the average jock and spoiled celebrity Nia is confident she will encounter. An air of mystery surrounds Dan, however; a reader is seldom invited inside of his head, so to speak. As a result, a reader is left in the dark about Dan's motivations and his feelings. Of course, actions speak louder than words. Authenticity is created by the author's judicious use of basketball jargon. Misunderstandings are also dealt with speedily before they mushroom into something bigger than they truly are. Ms. Delinsky is an able hand at averting disaster while fanning the flames between her two main characters.

All in all, FAST COURTING is a pleasant reading diversion. It just goes to show that dribbling the ball down center court is only possible when you run good interference. Dan and Nia have a wonderful chemistry, and Ms. Delinsky has a timeless talent for creating evocative, sensually charged fiction.

Barbara Delinsky has done it again!
This was a wonderful book. I could not put it down. I was sad when the book was over, because I wanted to read more about Nia and Daniel. I highly reccomend this book, as I do with any of Barbara Delinsky's books. She is by far my favorite author.

Old News - The internet hype is nauseating
This book was obviously written at the peak of the internet "Boom". The majority of the companies cited as examples of the onslaught of the new economy are no longer in existence. Earnings are barely mentioned. Companies cited as the movers and shakers of tomorrow are now penny stocks. The total lack of balance relative to other sectors is appalling and in retrospect is by itself educational. Everyone bought into the hype including the entire VC industry. This might explain why they all sat on the sideline in 2001 trying to regain their sense of direction. The entertainment value is a 5 and the educational value a 1. It is your choice.

Must Read for Every Entrepreneur & VC
This book is a must read for every entrepreneur and VC. The snippets of information in it are very valuable even after the downfall of the Internet economy-most of the text is more focused on timeless vc/entrepreneur related issues. I would highly recommend this book...

Good Read-Lots of Great Insight Even After the Shakedown
I was very impressed by the knowledge in this book. It has a ton of useful information for everyone from entrepreneurs to investors to other financial professionals. In addition, the content is fresh and much more applicable to the "after the shakedown" landscape than other venture capital oriented books such as eBoys, Confessions of a Venture Capitalist and Done Deals. This is a great book that has a ton of useful information straight from some very accomplised venture capitalists.

REWIND INSTEAD
Mercer's debut novel certainly has a unique and interesting plot. The problem: the book is way too long and the plot gets so intricate it stops making sense. By the time the novel ends, I'm not sure exactly who Ariel Gold is....Mercer makes Ariel a strong presence, which is to her credit, but how come Ariel is so disappointed in her body weight? Even with amnesia, past references indicate she was always chunky.
I don't know whether I'll continue with this one or not; reviews of her follow-ups indicate they aren't as involving.

FAST FORWARD a fast read
Met the author at a book signing at Poisoned Pen while vacationing in Scottsdale and was taken by her genuineness. Loved the book and feel I have discovered a new writer to look forward to. Characters are well developed and one can easily care about them. I certainly am interested in the continuing relationships. Well resolved and has me ready to pick up the next one in the Ariel series ASAP.

This book is hard to put down!
Imagine waking up with partial amnesia (you know about most things, but not your personal history, who you used to know, or anything about what you do for a living). That's bad enough, but what if you think you are in the wrong body? To add a little excitement, your house has been turned upside down, and your shirt is covered with blood. To make matters even worse, you are soon forced into killing somebody. The situation goes downhill from there. This is one of the most exciting books I have read in a long time. It is the author's first novel. My wife and I couldn't put the book down. If you like mysteries and outstanding character development, this book is for you. In fact, the book was so good that I wrote a letter to the author, congratulating her. That is a first for me, and I am an avid reader!

Fast Women
Published in Mass Market Paperback by St. Martin's Press (July, 2004)
Author: Jennifer Crusie
Amazon base price: $3.99
Emotionally numb from her divorce 18 months earlier, Nell Dysart is about to waken with a vengeance. When she takes a job as office manager for McKenna Investigations, she's determined to reorganize, redecorate, and revamp the stuck-in-the-'50s surroundings, but she runs smack-dab into senior partner Gabe McKenna, the immovable object to her irresistible force. Gabe likes the dated ambiance just fine and doesn't want a thing changed, but he soon learns that nothing in his life is going to stay the same now that Nell has arrived.

Rough and gruff, but with a heart of gold, Gabe is just what Nell needs to jump-start her hormones. Nell's formerly dull life is suddenly wildly active, for not only is she lusting after Gabe (and vice versa), but there's also a case of embezzlement to uncover, a dog to steal, and bribery to investigate. And, oh yes, there are those very cold, very dead bodies in the freezer.

Fast Women has well-rounded characters, an interesting mystery to resolve, and author Jennifer Crusie's trademark humor. In addition, Crusie gives readers a little something extra in her exploration of the emotional stages of divorce, the viability of marriage, and the value of self-honesty--all of which add up to an excellent fictional tale layered with a thought-provoking look at contemporary culture. --Lois Faye Dyer

Average review score:

FAST WOMEN; fast read.
A fairly common complaint is that FAST WOMEN is not WELCOME TO TEMPTATION. Personally, I think that's a good thing. True....TEMPTATION is an excellent book. So is WOMEN. They're very dissimilar, thank heavens. Frankly, I get tired of the "cookie cutter" characters when an author finds a format that's selling and refuses to stray from it. Crusie gets edgy and isn't afraid to break away from the pack and FAST WOMEN reflects that break.

Nell Dysart has been dumped by her husband of 22 years and with the help of her two sister-in-laws, is groping for a new life. Due to a few twist and laughable turns she finds herself working for a couple of detectives in their antiquated office that she immediately decides to update,(the office, not the detectives) but not before she has innocently managed to create even more damage. By the time she has made changes in the office she has also dug through the tough shield that the #1 detective, Gabe McKenna has shrouded himself in.

Crusie developed a novel that is pure feel-good entertainment and serves up plenty of opportunities to laugh out loud. As an added bonus the reader gets to try and figure out the mystery that is brewing throughout the book. It's not heavy reading, but who wants that on lazy hot summer days? If I want to dig into WAR AND PEACE again, I'll save that for those long, dreary winter months. Until then, I'll grab every Crusie book as fast as she can turn them out.

A laugh-out-loud, great, big joyride of a book
Things you can count on from Jennifer Crusie: one-liners no one else in the world would think of, let alone say ... characters that make you just wring your hands for them ... inventive plots that in themselves set you up for laughter ... all with a worldly view of life that makes you come away from her books feeling a little wiser somehow than when you started.

The extras in FAST WOMEN: the most complex, interesting love relationship Crusie has ever put on paper ... hilarious one-liners that fit so neatly into the story you almost miss them, then do a double-take, go back for them, and enjoy them twice as much (or just simply burst out laughing because you can't believe he/she SAID that)... a crazy, funny murder mystery with more cold bodies--ice-hard cold bodies!--than you'd find in the Clondike ... laughter somehow eeked out of the toughest stuff of life, starting with the pain for divorce. Oh, and I should mention she writes some darn fine love scenes--a surprising combination of sexy and funny, both.

Crusie knows life. She milks it for its joy and doesn't pass on the sorrow--she knows how to make you laugh at all of it. Buy this one, her best yet! Read it first before all the other books sitting on your nightstand! This one will entertain you into the wee hours.

This is Storytelling at its Best...
Nell Dysart is numb. After a divorce some eighteen months earlier, her life has been on autopilot. Her friend pulls some strings to get her a temporary job with a run-down detective agency stuck in the fifties. Gabe McKenna is the tall, dark, and broad-shouldered owner of McKenna Investigations. His life is not going so well either. He's wasting time talking to clients about blackmail, his cousin and partner, Riley, is fed up with watching cheating spouses, and his ex-wife of ten years has dumped him again.

Nell is efficient and wants to clean the place up, which might require a bulldozer. Gabe wants everything to remain the same. When Nell calls the cleaning service to find out why they haven't done their job for the last few months, she ultimately discovers the secretary she's filling in for had embezzled several thousand dollars from the agency. Seems simple enough, but this discovery leads to lies, blackmail, murder, frozen corpses and the loss of some really nice china. Nell and Gabe disagree on most things. The business cards, new office furniture, and dognapping, but eventually they do agree they can't keep their hands off each other, even though it does break business rule number three.

There is a lot going on in this story. Several secondary characters have quite a bit of page time, more than usually seen in a romance novel. Suze, who is Nell's sister-in-law and best friend, plus Riley, are in the story almost as much as Nell and Gabe. The twists and turns of the plot are numerous, because this is about much more than romance. Oddly enough, it works, and even though the plot is convoluted, I had no difficulty keeping track. It does take about half the book for the attraction between Nell and Gabe to become evident, but I was so entertained it didn't really matter. Plus, this gave a more realistic time frame for them to fall in love, especially since Nell was still reeling from her divorce.

A very unique, humor-filled romance novel with three-dimensional characters that kept me quite engrossed until the very end. Ms. Crusie is an amazing storyteller who hooked me with, "Welcome to Temptation", which still remains my favorite of hers thus far. But this is a worthy contender, and I have no qualms in recommending it.
