With an RD's Stamp of Approval
Living with a registered dietitian, this book has been an invaluable resource. Whenever a debate breaks out about how many grams of fat are in half an avocado, or how many grams of fiber an apple has, you can go to this bible and resolve it instantly. This is literally the book I open up most in my library.

Best Nutrition Guide I've Found!
I own several books on nutrition (both the 'advice' type and the 'what's in your food' type) and found that this is the absolute best on the market in the 'what's in your food' category.

This book gives the nutritional breakdown of every food you can imagine, from the very basic to the truly exotic. The chart for each food is simple to read, and for each item there's advice on preparation, best ways to keep the nutrition content high, comparisons to similar foods, etc.

The book also has an easy-to-use key to let you quickly flip through the whole thing to find foods that are good for weight loss, those that help lower cholesterol, those that are blood-building, those with high fiber content, etc. A great bonus: there is an index that helps you find top foods containing particular vitamins & minerals, and describes the body's use of that vitamin or mineral. For instance, if you need to boost your iron intake because you're anemic, you'll find a comprehensive list of iron-rich foods in the back of the book.

This is a fabulous book to own whether you're simply watching your weight or are someone who likes to be informed about what you're eating. I liked this book so much I bought it as a gift for two friends, and they've each raved about it. It definitely gets a place on the keeper shelf!

A fascinating resource
This book gives you the nutritional makeup of EVERY food out there--from fruits and nuts all the way to fast food. And it doesn't "look down" on any kind of food. It gives you the facts, and always finds some redeeming nutrition, even in a Big Mac! In trying to increase my fiber intake, I found this book invaluable--and an interesting read to boot!

Exciting memoir feels and reads like fiction
Mr. Shecket writes a powerful story. Although I knew antisemitism went on in the service I would have never known how bad it was had I not read Private Wars. I normally I would say that only someone who has lived Gerry'experience could grasp exactly what happened to him. However now, thanks to Mr. Sheckets moving story, everyone can understand what he and others must have gone through. It's a fast reading, fast moving, smoothly written book. I laughed and cried, and I could not put it down. Rosalie Ferrer Kramer, author: "Dancing in the Dark: Things My Mother Never Told Me."

A psychological study of a young soldier.
"Do it now, Gerry, blow his head off!" Amazingly, Gerry in "Private Wars" is talking about his own squad leader! What follows is one the most gripping and exciting stories of a young boy who has to fight two wars, - the Germans, and anti-Semitism within his own ranks. His ingenuity and creativity help him stay alive as a rifleman in the infantry. We are treated to a fascinating psychological study of an eighteen year old developing into a mature young man. I found "Private Wars" intense, suspenseful, gratifying, and hard to put down.

Private Wars
Comments about "Private Wars" by Ed Yanis of Cherry Hill NJ, and author of "Dancing With Bears":

Yesterday my routine turned out to be different. Instead of grabbing the Wall Street Journal, I picked up your book and started to read it for my usual 15 minutes before I would doze off. But, I couldn't put Private Wars down. I was entranced. It held me captive for four and one-half hours until I finished. All sorts of emotions and thoughts were zooming through my brain like lightning bolts. I must say it was a terrific novel. Well written, easy to read and the mental pictures it conjured were fantastic. You are an excellent writer and you should feel very proud of yourself for taking on such a project and accomplishing such a wonderful work. That's quite a legacy you leave to your kids and the world. Gerry, thank you very much.

Excellent book
This outstanding book was one of the mainstays for my Ph.D. dissertation. It explain factor analysis and SEM techniques in a clear and effective way, with an hands-on approach that guides the reader during all the data analysis and result interpretation phases.

Thank goodness for this book
I really needed this for my dissertation. As a computer scientist who is using statistically-based data mining techniques in my PhD dissertation, I needed a good "Quick Course" in factor analysis. More important than just "what is factor analysis", I needed to know how to implement my ideas in SAS. This book did the trick. Now let's hope my advisors think so. :)

An excellent tutorial for the rusty structural modeler!
This book does an outstanding job of taking someone that is somewhat rusty in advanced multivariate techniques and turning them into a conversant and competent modeler. Larry Hatcher uses plain English to explain what a technique may be used for, what the required SAS code is, what the output should look like, and how the output can be interpreted. I'd strongly recommend this book for anyone taking a structural equation modeling course or wishing to apply this technique in research.

More elaborate dishes help you celebrate, entertain, and dine magnificently and healthfully, so you won't have to play catch-up after the party ends.

Cancer prevention info in a clear, concise fashion.
I began this book with the premise that there was little more I could learn about diet and lifestyle regarding cancer. As a former cancer patient, I've read anything and everything I could get my hands on. However, I was surprised to find -- only a few pages into the book -- that there were concepts that I had either confused or distorted over the years. Concise and orderly, this book offers current theories and statistical information on many aspects of cancer prevention in a clear and understandable fashion. But the best part is (because having useful information is one thing, putting it to work is another) the recipe section which offers a wide assortment of really delicious dishes, from simple to exotic. it has actually convinced me -- a serious skeptic -- that it's possible to serve food which is not only flavorful and interesting, but healthful as well.

This book focuses on great foods that happen to be good.
Having read 4o% of all the recipes I was amazed at how tasty all of them were. The recipes are so favorful that you will find it hard to believe that these recipes are also healthy. I went to a bookstore and studied one recipe (for a complete dinner) made the meal and was beyond pleased with the finished product. The instructions are simple and the explanation of why certain food in certain combos are beneficial made me change my why of eating. This book is a must for anyone who just wants to enjoy a good dinner.

medically accurate and interesting; great, flavorful recipes
I received this book during the book tour distribution. As a physician I am basically skeptical about books claiming to reduce cancer rates. I was pleasantly surprised by the scientific accuracy of the text. I've since made at least 7 of the recipes, all of which are wonderful! I have found it difficult to locate cookbooks that include easy, fast recipes with low fat and reasonable flavor. Too often the recipes are easy but the ingredients are hard to find; or, the recipe is easy and the taste is bland. This great book meets all of my needs. I really didn't want to like this book, but I love it! And I learned a lot about nutrition to boot!

Author Lives on in Our Hearts After Recent Death
My dad Lee McEwen, Sr., author of THE SYLVIA FACTOR, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2000, at 12:15 p.m., from a short battle with squamous cell carcinoma--lung cancer. The doctors gave daddy the diagnosis at the end of July, 2000. Daddy may not be with us in the flesh, but he will live on in our hearts and continue to touch the lives of those who read his book. May you find peace, contentment, and humor as you learn more about WWII and family values. Our comfort comes in knowing we will be reunited once again for eternity with our Heavenly Father. Daddy has other works to be published, so his legacy doesn't end here. Watch for other books by this author.

Very Interesting And Entertaining
The descriptive and unusual experiences of a man raised on a cotten farm who helped build liberty ships and later rode the unpredctible atlantic on merchant marine ships transporting every type from wounded soldiers to war brides makes interesting reading.I could not put the book down.

The Aftermath of WWII and War Brides
This author's first book is absolutely outstanding! Find out what it's like for a country boy, who was a plumber on a war bride ship, learned how women from around the world act. There's a lot of historical information provided also for any WWII buffs!

The Ascension Factor
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Publishing Group (January, 1988)
Authors: Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

More Voidship
Unlike Dune, this series has been out of print for some time. Shame! No one does it better than Herbert but Dune-Mania has left too much of his best work unread and unknown. Dune was a masterpiece, no question. But the series devolved into action novels - the work of creating his universe did not have to be re-done so the rest was just what happens next (and as Brian continues the series, what happened before). The Voidship series is different. Beginning with Destination: Void, which establishes the premise, each novel must reestablish the world in which it is set. Each set of characters has very new hurdles and new forms of intelligent life(? at least self-awareness) to deal with, each with their own world view. A good marketing bet would be to reintroduce these novels in paperback, capitalizing on the popularity of the Dune series. Let the new generation of sf readers discover the other worlds of Frank Herbert. This review refers to the series - Destination: Void, The Jesus Incident, The Lazarus Effect, and The Ascension Factor

Ascension Factor -- Frank Herbert's other sci-fi world
This is not a story of empire, such as in his great classic series, "Dune; but rather, Herbert and Ransom tell the story of an ill-fated interstellar colonial expedition gone horribly wrong. I am looking for a hard copy of this work because I believe that the general theme of the mega-hit Strategy software game, "Alpha Centauri" is inspired by some of the vicious alien creatures described in Herbert's story of the adaptation of humanity to a brutal alien world. Characterization is a lot deeper than most sci-fi, and the "run around the fortress" scene is something I've remembered for more than two decades since I last read the book. In our world of animated feature films, this would make an incredible movie.

Attitude Factor

An exciting and helpful new understanding!
Even though I was a huge fan of Blakeslee¹s two earlier books, THE RIGHT BRAIN and BEYOND THE CONSCIOUS MIND, I was so excited by THE ATTITUDE FACTOR, I read it in two sittings. This is the most fascinating, readable, and helpful book I¹ve encountered in the past five years at least. In my case, this is saying a lot, since I read dozens of self-empowerment books every year as part of my "Time On Your Side" coaching and consulting business (www.AnnTime.com).

I got so excited about one of the techniques the author discusses calls "karate chop will-power" life, with immediate great results. I went on to incorporate it into my seminars and write an article about it that appeared Working World magazine. I've also given a couple dozen copies away to my family, friends, and best clients.

Read this book and apply a fraction of its suggestions and your life will definitely benefit by quantum leaps. THE ATTITUDE FACTOR approach can even help you live and longer, healthier life. (If you¹re skeptical about that, you won't be after you read all the scientific evidence Blakeslee presents to back it up.) You'll learn amazing, cutting-edge information on how our brains really work; and this is not information you¹ve seen in other books.

THE ATTITUDE FACTOR should be required reading for every active, thinking adult trying to cope in our dysfunctional, hyperspeed society you (like me) have hit midlife and want to make the most of the rest of your time on this planet. I can¹t recommend it highly enough or often enough. (If you do read it, I'd be glad to hear how you liked it.)

It changed my life!
An amazing new understanding of aging that you can apply to your life to keep your youthful attitudes. The "use it or lose it" principle applies not only to your body but also to your mental attitudes. Blakeslee teaches you how to recognize critical moments in your life where using self-control for one second can have a profound effect on your future health and happiness.
Scientifically-proven attitude tests have been found to predict your future health prospects to an amazing degree. These attitudes relate to happiness and having pleasure in your life. Feelings of pleasure and well being energize your immune system and make you live a longer and healthier life. Blakeslees web site www.attitudefactor.com has the tests in a format where the scores are calculated automatically and your health prospects are calculated based on a massive 5000 person 20 year experiment. Graphs of the correlation between attitude test scores and health status 21 years later show an amazing correlation. The highest scorers were 30 times more likely to be alive and well 21 years later!!
I am amazed that this book is now out of print, but would strongly reccomend you pick up a used one if you can.

This weighty volume, based on a conference six years ago celebrating Joseph Rykwert's 70th birthday, is far more than a congratulatory festschrift. Between its front and back biographical wrappings are fascinating essays of lasting interest, to which a short review cannot do justice....As Rykwert has concluded elsewhere:'History can never teach us. But we may learn from it.' This book is an education.
