A fun and thought-provoking analysis of masculinity
This excellent book offers a variety of perspectives on not only the psychology of space but also the ways that these spaces are masculinized and created to promote the ideals of heterosexual masculinity. Of particular note in this anthology are "Rock Hudsons Bachelor Apartment in Pillow Talk", an analysis of the bachelor pad and its overt design with the intention of accentuating the heterosexual and "closeting" the homosexual in the partitioning of male desire; and the sometimes humorous "Electric Carving Knife", a device marketed toward men as a means of perpetuating the male tradition of the meat carver. I also very much enjoyed the essay on "Gay use of the streets", concerning the appropriation of public spaces as a means of forming a cultural network in the cities of the 1920's.

This is a very interesting examination of masculinity, and anyone interested in this topic should enjoy this multi-dimensional analysis of masculinity and its architectures. It comes with my heartiest recommendation (and, for any men out there, you probably will never again look at the electric carving knife in quite the same way!)

Survey of environmental epidemiology subjects
This book was assigned in my graduate level course in environmental epidemiology. Steenland and Savitz provide adequate introductory and background information for environmental epi and the rest of the chapters are written by experts in their respective fields.

The only problem I had with the book is the very different writing styles between authors of chapters. If you attempt to read more than one chapter in one sitting, you might want to take a breather in between chapters and clear your mind a bit. Otherwise, the 358 pages are a great summary of the thousands of scientific articles one would need to read to begin to understand this complex field. The editors and authors have done a nice job choosing subjects that are at the core of environmental epi and that are interesting as well. It was informative and educational.

Transcription factors
A well organized book about one of the most vital topics in molecular biology. Although the book is very concise in certain topics; like RNA polymerases, chrmatin remodeling, but I find it, generally, up to date in references and covers most recent topic in gene expression.
We wish to find a chapter about different eukaryotic RNA polymerases and their transcription factors in next edition especially the title of the book is transcription factors.

Unconventional
I read this book in a women's studies class. It is based on a qualitative study about HIV+ women. It features a collection of voices from a series of interviews with several support groups, and focuses mainly on the emotional/spiritual aspect of living with HIV/AIDS. The two researchers who ran the study and edited the book are as much a part of the book as the women are. They keep a running commentary on the bottom of each page reflecting on the interviewing process and their relationships as researchers and friends to the women in the study, keeping the reader aware of the power differentials that might have an effect on the women's stories. The book also contains several angel "intertexts" which I personally didn't find to be very necessary, but Lather and Smithies explain it in the book. Overall, as a person who's never known anyone with HIV/AIDS, I liked how it focused on everyday "living" with HIV/AIDS. The voices of different women were featured and it showed the wide range of emotions and experiences that these women faced while living with HIV/AIDS.

A review by O. Frecaut/ International Monetary Fund (IMF)
"This book addresses one of the most pressing concerns for any transnational organization: how to work efficiently across the boundaries of time, space, and culture. The author delivers an important contribution to both theory and practice. To this end, a model is offered for teams to succeed in such environment."

Unintended Consequences: The Impact of Factor Endowments, Culture, and Politics on Long-Run Economic Performance (Ohlin Lectures)

Fascinating but disjointed lectures on culture and growth
An expanded version of the Ohlin Memorial Lectures at the Stockholm School of Economics in 1995, "Unintended Consequences" reads like a book-length recipe. In the first chapter the ingredients are set forth, in the main body of the book they are mysteriously mixed, and at the end, out comes the cake. Just as the oven hides the baking process of the cake, most readers will not quite know how the book's conclusions were reached.

The author begins by setting forth the building blocks of a theory of long-run economic performance, without explicitly stating that theory. Although the lectures supply delightful reading on differences among civilizations the world over, comparing East and West, they lack a coherent theoretical underpinning.... The lectures ramble from one topic to another, each one fascinating in its own right, but without much integration.

In the first chapter (lecture), Lal sets forth two main building blocks of long-run economic performance: relative factor endowments and culture.... In the remaining lectures, the author leads us through explanations of the social and religious systems, the cosmological beliefs, the material factors, the politics, law, society, and economy of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Judea, India, China, and Islam, which he then contrasts with the West. The development of individualism is the key to the West's economic advantage over the other areas. However, he does not specifically say what caused the West to have this advantage. I was particularly disappointed here, because I believe I have set forth a theory to explain that development (in [my 1994 book] "Centuries of Economic Endeavor"), which would have been useful to Lal, but he makes no reference to it.

Lal explains the rise of individualism in the West largely through the evolution of Christianity, beginning with St. Augustine's "City of God." Shame and guilt are principal building blocks in the economies of the West. Those economies he contrasts with the dirigisme and ultimate reform in China and India. His references to the "miracle" economies of East Asia were apparently written before the East Asian financial collapse, which he did not foresee.

Although Lal refers to "unintended consequences" at various points in the book, the biggest unintended consequence is that individualism led to the welfare state. "But individualism has paradoxically undermined the very cement of the prosperous societies it created.... The growing failure of Western states to provide the most basic of public goodsguaranteeing their citizens' safetyis eroding their legitimacy, but it need not dissipate the economic vigor of the West" (p. 176).

In sum, this book constitutes a pleasurable window into the mind of a great thinker, who jumps from one theme to another as if they are all clear in his own mind. But the links may not be readily perceived by the ordinary intellectual.

The Virility Factor: Masculinity Through Testosterone, the Male Sex Hormone
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (November, 1976)
Author: Robert Bahr
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $5.25
Average review score:

Well-balanced and informative
This is a very good book if you are looking for a well-balanced discussion of the male hormone testosterone. The author writes with a sound fact-base and strives to give clarity to a subject that is often clouded by hype, scandal or just plain misinformation. If the book has a fault, it tends to be repetitive in places, citing far too many examples of testosterone replacement therapy working miracles in the lives of men with testosterone deficiency. Otherwise, a very interesting read.

Book Review
Zuckerman's latest work is truly a valuable component to understanding a variety of disorders through a diathesis-stress model. Zuckerman provides the reader with up-to-date prevalence figures and etiological theories for the disorders covered in the book. For those who are interested in biological factors related to dysfunction, Zuckerman devotes a large portion of the text to covering these factors. I read this book last semester as part of a graduate course in Psychopathology and feel that it was an excellent choice on the part of my professor to assign the book as part of the class readings.

'The Commodification of the Psyche'
The World of Consumption is a really fantastic book. It explains modern consumption theory on everything from food to advertising. It is the most complete book on the subject I have encoutered through many years of research. The only difficultly one might have is that it is laden with theory. If one does not have a good background in modern theory (from Marx to Baudrilliard), then the excellent ideas in this book are difficult to understand.
