Aviation Automation: The Search for a Human Centered Approach (Human Factors in Transportation)
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (November, 1996)
Author: Charles E. Billings
Amazon base price: $89.95
Average review score:

Strong argument for human-centered air traffic automation
Billings covers the evolution of aviation automation, especially in the airborne side of the 'equation', its successes and failures, and the requirements for the future.

Incorporating the principles of human-centered automation early in the development of Air Traffic Management automation, ATC modernization would be well-advanced by also taking advantage of the lessons learned in on-board systems.

In order to maintain the situational awareness of the human operators, the design of ATM automation should be based on the 'management by consent' doctrine. ATM automation should be a 'close mimic' of on-board FMS - so that both the pilot and controller communities have a shared cognitive model of how the systems operate. And the ATM-to-FMS coupling should be procedural, rather than automated, to guarantee the ability of the human operator to safely and efficiently operate the system.

Keeping these three objectives in mind will lead to the implementation of a system that can handle the increasing traffic while not sacrificing the high level of safety we currently enjoy.

I have only one minor issue with this work: Billings mentions AAS - the Advanced Automation System project, begun in 1981 - quite often. This book was published in 1997; by that time, FAA had terminated this project.

Must reading for those who desire true AWARNESS
The writing style, story line and depth of scope put playwright Teresa Wiater at the top of my favorite authors. This book is a page turner to the end. All humanity has a lesson to be learned from this fictionalized account of the real-life chronicals of the alien abductions of Duke Williams.

Outstanding!!!
Good reasoning as to why and how religion has taken over the way people think about race. It includes statistics and quotes. It looks at both blacks and whites. As a white person, I don't think it is pointing a finger at us primarily the way many books on race do, though history is used to point out the facts about how racism developed within institutions. It encourages everyone to think outside of the traditional religion box.

Bio-Sexual Factor
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (July, 1979)
Author: Richard Hagen
Amazon base price: $9.95
Used price: $1.62
Collectible price: $25.00
Average review score:

Before "The Selfish Gene" there was "The Biosexual Factor"
"The Biosexual Factor" is an easy read. It introduces many of the fundamental concepts of evolutionary biology in a context in which they are easily understood. Although this book appears to contain some arithmetic errors involving the calculation of genetic correlations between kinfolk, these miscalculations are insignificant and excusable when one considers that the fundamental concepts contained in "The Selfish Gene" were first introduced into the meme pool in this seminal work.

Long before Richard Dawkins had conceived of "The Selfish Gene," researcher Richard Hagen had written "The Biosexual Factor." The ideas that were subsquently hailed as the the breakthrough paradigm shift brought about by Dawkins's creating a conceptual shift from the evolutionary point-of-view (POV) of the phenotype to the POV of the gene are embraced in this earlier work of Hagen's. "The Biosexual Factor" is, perhaps, THE fundamental seminal work of evolutionary biology. Since its initial publication, variations on "The Selfish Gene" have appeared in many guises. Owing to an initial pun on Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent of Man," some of these variations have been entitled, "The Descent of [blank]" (fill in the blank), in which the reader's POV of evolution is directed to the "[blank]" portion of a generation, e.g. "The Descent of Woman," "The Descent of the Child." Perhaps all evolutionary biology books could be re-titled in this vein. If so, "The Selfish Gene" would become "The Descent of the Gene," and "The Biosexual Factor" would become "The Descent of Natural Selection." This analogy of title describes the contents of "The Biosexual Factor" about as well as can be done in a small space.

"The Biosexual Factor" is a must read for anyone interested in familiarizing themselves with the roots of our understanding of evolutionary science. The application of its concepts are much wider than biology alone, and are easily extended into the evolutionary spaces of, for example, business, government, or technology.

It is quite unfortunate that, as the Humanists forced themselves upon Dawkins, causing him to recant some of his most hard-won concepts of blind, unforgiving, unstoppable evolution, so did the early feminists cause such trouble for Hagen that he seems to have, at least temporarily, disowned this work. We can only hope that History eventually recognizes Hagen for the genius he is, and "The Biosexual Factor" for the seminal influence it is.

Inspiration from Beginning to End!
I've had the opportunity to hear Henry Marsh speak and was very impressed. He is dynamnic, funny and his topics are relevant and important.

His book is just as good, maybe even better. I just loved the personal stories and how much he overcame to accomplish the things that matter to him.

This book has truly helped me be a better person.

Rad it
Back to the "data-driven...stuff". What I do show contempt for is the charlatans who repeat over and over the same silly lab tests and draw unfounded conclusions to support their theories on training. As Master Po has said before, "Man who study exercise-physiology and think he know running is like man who study price of produce and think he know how farm."

Could you if imagine engineers pursued their craft in the same manner of EP-Geeks? What the lab and the calculations say mean nothing to engineers. Engineers test and re-test everything in the field. Ever hear of a mechanical engineer telling a Formula I driver how to drive? A aeronautical engineer telling a pilot how to fly? Hell no. That's because they know their place in the grand scheme of things. Would you ever buy a Jim Beams Flying Formula book written by an engineer. Get outta here!

With that said, I've noticed that a lot of you guys read a lot of running books. That's fine. take em for what there worth. I have never heard of any of you reading any books on the psychology of running. What gives? Any of you ever read 'The Breakthrough Factor' by Henry Marsh? I didn't think so. Why not? Henry Marsh is by far the best American steeplechaser. Not by a little, by ThAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT much! Here's a guy with NO TALENT and NO WORK ETHIC and you don't want to know what he knows?

"Psssssst, over here kid, running's all upstairs."

Scary book but it didn't scare me into stopping. I only managed to quit when I got hold of a copy of Richard Craze's The Voice of Tobacco - now I don't smoke any more after thirty years of puffing that old devil tobacco. Cool book.

The original definitive book on interior ergonomics.
Although Dr. Kleeman passed away in 1997, his legacy is the "Challenge of Interior Design." This book continues to have relevance to Architects, interior designers, and space planners. The case studies contained within its pages are a fascinating look at the path we have taken to come to the valuing of participatory design and ergonomics.

As a pioneer interior ergonomist, Dr. Kleeman provides insight and a sense of history to his readers and this book is a perfect introduction to his companion book, "Interior Design of the Electronic Office." "The Challenge of Interior Design" is must reading for any serious interior designer or Architect.
