An eye-opener !
Learning from Professor Mark Perlman was one of the best things happened to me when I was still a student. Since Professor Perlman had stopped lecturing on this topic ( in fact I was among those who attended his last series of lectures ), this book, along with an earlier publication in 1998, serves as an alternative to his interesting and thought provoking lectures filled with first-hand information about economics and economists. The course was an eye-opener for me and I highly recommend this book which covers the materials Professor Perlman put together for us.

A Great Teacher, Wonderful Books
Anyone who took Dr. Mark Perlman's courses on the history of economic thoughts will admires why he knows so much about the development of economics. His lecture notes are just like pieces of maps that lead his students into the Treasure Island of Knowledge. I am very happy to know that Mark and Dr. McCann have published their books. I would like to share my experiences with everyone who read the books.

Cape Cod is not the most dangerous place to fly into
But sometimes it seems that way and for New York lawyer Ron Sinzheimer, on October 9, 1998, it was beyond dangerous, it was deadly. There aren't any more General Aviation accidents here than other parts of the country and there's nothing particularly stunning about this one so there's little reason to remember it. A man and the family dog in a single engine Grumman Traveler flying into the Cape to link up with his wife and son at their vacation home. Because I remember this accident, live nearby in Brewster, and it speaks to something of keen interest to me, my perception of the book may be quite colored and thus this "five-star" review. Nevertheless Phaedra Hise has written a compelling story that will be of interest to a much broader audience than GA pilots and people who live on the Cape.

The challenges associated with flying to and from the Cape are all to do with weather, specifically fog and haze. That means "instrument flight rules" and talking about flying as different from "visual flight rules" as night is from day. Besides the personal tragedy to the Sinzheimer family, the thrust of Hise's book is that once a pilot has lost visual reference to the horizon things very quickly begin to unwind. It takes a sharp pilot to sort out the conflict between what his senses say - "i'm turning" - and what the instruments read - wings are level. PILOT ERROR is too innocuous a description for the multitude of things (mostly bad) that are taking place in such situations. Sometimes the various instruments seem to be contradicting each other and you must fight the panic that comes when your mind screams that it needs a visual reference in order to understand.

Hise could have used a famous case that everyone would have remembered in order to get across her message that instrument flight rules are a critical skill for any GA pilot. The struggle with understanding what his instruments were telling him was the same for John F Kennedy Jr when he was flying through haze on the way to Martha's Vineyard in 1999. Using his flight would have meant focusing on him rather than where the real story is - five small instrument dials, that GA pilots must be absolutely familiar with - lest we become an accident statistic or the subject of a powerfully descriptive and very well written book.

A smart read about a bad ride
In Pilot Error, Phaedra Hise masterfully recreates on the page the lone-pilot crash of Ron Sinzheimer, en route to Cape Cod from Albany on a cloud-bound Friday night. A pilot herself and a deft writer, Hise spins a taught story of the bad weather, bad luck, hubris and random events that ensnared the star lawyer in his tragic flight. At the same time she informs readers on the roles of the many professionals who make America's air traffic as remarkably safe as it is. Hise has created a moving and enlightening vignette that avoids melodrama even in the gut-wrenching scenes where Sinzheimer's wife, Marsha, slowly comes to grips with the fact that her husband is not coming home. The book ultimately makes his fate more than just another forgotten human tragedy. Hise should be commended. At the same time, Pilot Error is a read you put down only when you need to take a deep breath and whisper to yourself, "There but for the grace of God . . . ." After reading this book, those of us who ride behind the cockpit will never take our crew or air traffic controllers for granted again.

Popular Culture, Educational Discourse, and Mathematics (Suny Series, Education and Culture : Critical Factors in the Formation of Character and Com)

fascinating and sobering; essential for parents and teachers
This study, which compares discussion of math education in professional protocols and popular cultural representations and uses of math is, first of all, a lot of fun to read: I have never before seen Wheel of Fortune related to mathematics and math education! Secondly, I feel like I really had my eyes opened, for example to the ways in which concerns about educating girls as well as boys in mathematics (legimitate concerns, to be sure)have often been manifested in professional discourses that exacerbate or even help create the problem. Parents, teachers, administrators, those interested in popular culture, and those interested in an important commentary on education in our society should definitely read this book.

From the Publisher:
This ground-breaking book analyzes contemporary education discourse in the light of curriculum politics and popular culture, using sources ranging from academic scholarship to popular magazines, music video, film and television game shows. Mathematics is used as an "extreme case," since it is a discipline so easily accepted as separable from politics, ethics or the social construction of knowledge. Appelbaum's juxtaposition of popular culture, public debate and professional practice enables an examination of the production and mediation of "common sense" distinctions between school mathematics and the world outside of schools. Terrain ordinarily displaced or excluded by traditional education literature becomes the pendulum for a new conversation which merges research and practice while discarding pre-conceived categories of understanding. The book also serves as an entertaining introduction to emerging theories in cultural studies, progressively illustrating the uses of discourse analysis for comprehending ideology, the implications of power/knowledge links, professional practice as a technology of power, and curriculum as at once commodities and cultural resources. In this way, Appelbaum effectively reveals a direction for teachers, students and researchers to cooperatively form a community attentive to the politics of curriculum and popular culture.

Fantastic Book!
This book was a revelation to me. The idea that stress can be a positive force in my life is something I never realized. These two women have really caught the essence of true empowerment by teaching us how to change a negative emotion into something positive and useful.

The Positive Stress Factor
This book offers an alternative to all other "how to deal with stress" books - it really works! It is a positive, realistic approach to recognizing the stress in your life and learning how to change that stress from within. Stress is all around us but what matters most is how we learn to use our own positive energy to either conquer the stress or accept it in a new format. It will change the way you see stress and the way in which you find solutions to it. Drs. Holmes and Webb are two incredible women who truly have the gift of being teachers. They will teach, inform and delight you as you learn that stress really can be good for you - really!

The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals and Substance Abuse Counselors

Author: Shawn Christopher Shea
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

Seminal Text of Suicide Assessment
There are many books on suicidology and even on clinical interviewing, but none combine the two topics in such an effective and practical manner.

Dr. Shea's book, the second edition to his previous edition, is an excellent tool for any practicing clinician or student. He provides a method of assessment that is quick and efficient without being superficial.

Working in a federal penitentiary, suicide assessments are an important part of my work. I rely on Dr. Shea's assessment techniques on a regular basis because they allow for quick, triage assessments.

I can't recommend a book more highly!

A REAL "Must-Read" for All Clinicians
Shawn Shea's The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals and Substance Abuse Counselors is one of the most valuable professional texts I have read in the past decade. The book combines scholarship, practical guidelines and a literary quality that renders it a truly exceptional book in the field. I found the case examples used to illustrate clinical problems invaluable; these vignettes bring the theoretical material "alive" in a way that encourages clinicians from various disciplines and theoretical orientations to meaningfully incorporate the concepts. Shea elucidates such critical issues as risk factors and risk predictors in such a way as to make constructs that are often reifed once again meaningful. As part of my professional responsibilities, I am responsible for training/teaching mental health emergency clinicians aspects of clinical interviewing and suicide assessment. I have incorporated many of the principles in this book into these trainings. The CASE approach to suicidal assessment is perhaps the best approach to this complex task that I have found. The discussion on "contracting for safety/no suicide contracts" is relevant, congruent with current ethical and legal principles, and reflects the difficult reality of working with suicidal patients. I regularly recommend both this book and Shea's book on psychiatric interviewing to participants in the workshops.

In summary, I highly recommend this text for clinicians from all disciplines and at all phases of professional development. It is a rich text, full of clinical wisdom and scholarship, that both the novice and the seasoned clinician will find themselves reaching for repeatedly. Perhaps the best assessment of the book is the fact that I've tried to keep it on my bookshelf, but it keeps getting borrowed by my colleagues. I've resolved the problem by keeping a separate copy at home. THAT constitutes a valuable book!

The television show Psi Factor is one of the more dramatized programs dealing with paranormal phenomena, but I find the material to be more than entertaining. Now, the book by the same name takes stories from the first 15 episodes and presents them with equally dramatic effect. The sources of these tales are said to be real occurrences, which give the stories that extra tingle. Though I'd already seen the shows, I read this book in one sitting, finding that I couldn't tear myself away.

Great!
If you love sci-fi or the show, this is perfect for you

PSI Factor - A different kind of Chronicle
At first glance this book looked like it would be hard to follow with the way the chapters are set up. Boy, was I wrong. It flows very well. It is very refreshing to see a book set up so differently and have it be so easy to read. I love being able to read just a chapter at a time. It covers case stories one to a chapter. No chapter is more than eight pages long. It great for reading when you just have 10 minutes here and there. The stories are very well presented. I am ready for volume II =)

Success Factors of Young African-American Males at a Historically Black College

Let the Truth Be Told
I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Dr.Marilyn J. Ross. She explained the reasons why African-American males tend to have a better chance at success in historically black colleges, and personally I believe that they do. They have a better chance of receiving academic help, encouragement, and assistance. Not only that there are more opportunities for learned networking through fraternal organizations, church organizations, and special interest groups.

I can honestly state that some of my strongest relationships and bonds where created while attending a historically black college. There I learned how to work hard, and become more aware as to what matters most . . . A sound faith, strong ties with my family, intense study, and community endeavors that support cultural awareness as a whole.

Interesting Research
I read this book by Dr. Ross and she has explained why and how some African-American males succeed at historically black colleges. Dr. Ross researched the area of family and the importance of having a strong family base along with religon were highly significant to the findings of her study of why black males succeeded. Also Dr. Ross was able to perform a qualitative and quantitive analysis study to measure the results of her research to support her theory. I found this particular research interesting, because also these black males that were selected for the study were also mentored by a faculty member, administrative or staff member of the university. I would recommend this particular research to anyone who is looking to send their son or daughter to a historically black college or university. So often we debate in the African-American community should we or shouldn't we send our children to HBCUs or non-HBCUs and this particular book will be able good tool to help us make a researched base descision.

I am interested in performing the research that Dr. Ross has currently performed and hopefully one day I will get that opportunity.

The TeamNet Factor : Bringing the Power of Boundary Crossing Into the Heart of Your Business

Most Organizational Limits Are Self-Imposed
Here is the basic concept of "Teamnet": the word "team" implies a group which is small, in the same place, and tightly coordinated; the word "network" implies connectivity which tends to be large, spread out, and loosely linked. "Teamnet" brings the best of both together. Lipnack and Stamps organize their excellent material within two Sections and then provide an Afterword ("The Risk of Democracy: Teamnets as the Hope for the 21st Century") and a Reference Section ("Transforming Bureaucracies and Systems"). The authors assert that teamnets create the "great competitive advantage of boundary crossing" and I agree. They identify "Five Teamnet Principles" (unifying purpose, independent members, voluntary links, multiple leaders, and interactive levels), explaining precisely how these principles shape and inform teamnetting initiatives. What I found especially interesting and informative are their analyses of various organizations which have created and sustained successful teamnets.

I want to stress two points when highly recommending this book. First, it was valuable in 1993 when first published but is even more valuable now because of all of the opportunities which the WWW continues to create. Eventually all organizations will be directly or indirectly involved in globalization, for example. The "Five Teamnet Principles" will continue to create almost unlimited potential applications. Also, with all due respect to major international corporations such as those the authors examine, I think their observations and suggestions will be of even greater value to small-to-midsize organizations in which teamwork and connectivity are not only desirable but indeed imperative.

L'atteinte de l'efficience des organisations. A lire.

The Truth About Breast Cancer Risk Assessment

You Won't Find This Information Elsewhere
I bought this book because of Dr. Hollingsworth's reputation as a physician and a communicator; I am recommending it because everyone, at some time in her life, will want more information concerning her own... or a loved one's... breast cancer risk. There is good news: It is largely quantifiable.

"My mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer; am I at increased risk? What about my (daughter/sister) ?"

"I am at higher risk of developing breast cancer; what can I do to increase my chances of surviving this disease?"

These are tough questions which until now have too often gone unanswered.

Even if your own identifiable breast cancer risk is minimal, the odds are that you will have a friend or loved one who will be forced to deal with this issue. Given the existing lack of unanimity within the medical community as to even the diagnosis & treatment of breast cancer, it is not surprising that we are faced with such conflicting information about our risk of developing the disease. Highly-touted statistics notwithstanding, there is NO one-size-fits-all answer. When your health is at stake, statistical tautologies are not helpful.

Dr. Hollingsworth's book is written for clinicians as well as lay people. It explains in understandable language what you need to know to make the right choices. This book arms the reader with the knowledge to ask the right questions & the confidence to seek the best alternatives for her own unique situation.

There is a peace of mind to be gained from reading Dr. Hollingsworth's book. It places the mysteries, fables, facts & options re: risk assessment in clear perspective. It answers the question, "What on earth do I do now! "

Once you have read this book, I suspect that you will want to give copies to all the important women in your life.

The Truth is Out There
Dealing with breast cancer or the threat of it has been a way of life in our family. Both my aunts and mother have struggled with this disease. It claimed the lives of my aunts and my mother has one of those incredibly high individual risk assessments that cause us all to pause when it her exam time rolls around.

Whether medical journals or Ladies Home Journal, if it involves breast cancer, breast imaging, breast cancer dectection or treatment, I consume the information with a voracious appitite. Unfortunately, not all of it is worth filtering through but every now and then you hit pay-dirt.

Very recently that happened and would encourage others interested in the subject of breast cancer to read the new book "The Truth About Breast Cancer Risk Assessment", by Alan B. Hollingsworth, M.D. If you have ever wondered about all the data which comes flooding out of breast cancer studies which seem to contradict themselves, or you have been tempted to believe detecting (much less treating) breast cancer can be taught by using the cookie cutter method then this is a must read.

Although the book is crammed full of numbers and rather abstract mathmatical concepts, the reader quickly gains a sense of the deeper underlying message that like the X-Files - the truth is out there BUT you must realize that what you first encounter or are led to believe as true, may not be.

This book is a dose of reality in a world which is far too often looking for a quick a fix and sound bite for the 6 o'clock news about some revolutionary breakthrough in breast cancer which may or may not really be significant.

I consider myself a student on this topic and try to learn as much as I can. Anyone interested in the subject of breast cancer should read this book. You will have a completely new set of skills to filter the data you encounter from this point on.
