The Vitamin E Factor : The Miraculous Antioxidant for the Prevention and Treatment of Heart Disease, Cancer, and Aging

Research supports the contention that vitamin E appears to help prevent heart disease, boost the immune system, slow down Alzheimer's disease, decrease the risk of prostate cancer, keep HIV from developing into full-blown AIDS, and enhance male fertility--and this is just the beginning of the list of benefits, says author Andreas M. Papas. But it isn't enough to pop a multivitamin pill. You need to understand what form of the nutrient is best for you, and how much. Vitamin E is really eight different compounds. Synthetic supplements contain only one (alpha-tocopherol), while the whole "family" is important and can be found only in some natural supplements. The Vitamin E Factor decodes all this and shows you how to develop a personalized strategy for getting the most from this nutrient. This book contains everything you could want to know about this "master antioxidant" and "super nutrient" and a few items you didn't know you wanted to know--its discovery, the origin of the name alpha-tocopherol, anecdotes from its history, and elephant research, for example. If you're a chemistry buff, special sections explain and illustrate the science of vitamin E. If you just want the basics, some of the book will be more technical than you want, but each chapter has helpful "straight talk" and/or "recommendations" that summarize the major points clearly. --Joan Price

Great science in plain English
I love this book. In my job I need technical and reference information. I find it in the Appendix, the sections for "chemistry buffs" and its the many scientific and Internet references. I use the book not only to learn about vitamin E, but also to get background information on nutrition, diet, aging, exercise and many diseases. I find it in plain English and is fun to read, full of real life stories and, something you do not find in health books, real humor.

Andreas Papas has done an excellent job
The book is easy to read and entertaining and supported by extensive literature. It will be useful not only for the general public but also for anyone interested in the role of vitamin E in health and nutrition.

The author is a very skilled and balanced teacher
This is one of the best books I have ever read. The author is a fantastic teacher. He is able telling complex things so everybody can understand it. He is also very balanced in his teachings. If you are looking for a book about vitamin E, there are no better alternative.

A very interesting book
I read this book after being formally diagnosed with testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism) at the relatively young age of 34. For me, testosterone deficiency tied in with a long battle with severe, medication resistant clinical depression, not with "anti-aging" issues or self esteem/virility issues of middle aged men. It was the only book I could find that seemed to address the issue of testosterone deficiency. Written by a Medical Doctor gives it more credibility, I try to avoid reading books of this sort that are not written by MDs.

Once I started reading it, I found it fascinating. I didnt realize testosterone is responsible for so many things. I also didnt realize the importance estrogen plays in the male...many males with low testosterone also have high estrogen levels which is a bad thing. Dr. Shippen explains how you can naturally lower your estrogen levels, which is good for male health. And he also explains how to naturally increase testosterone, although he fails to mention heavy strength training which I always understood was a hallmark of "naturally" increasing testosterone levels.

This book is really more oriented for the middle aged male who has hit his "mid life crisis" or "male andropause" as Dr. Shippen likes to describe it. In my opinion, its not really oriented for men who are truly hypogonadal (not producing enough testosterone and flunked formal lab tests). It is an anti-aging book, but it has lots of information thats useful for any male who doesnt want to end up getting hypogonadal at some point. Dr. Shippen describes the details of testosterone replacement therapy.

I find it odd that there arent a lot of other "me too" testosterone replacement books on the market. It seems like there would be more interest in this subject.

I really was amazed at the total lack of mention Dr. Shippen placed on exercise and especially strength training to maintain or improve testosterone levels. Thats my only complaint with this book.

Absolutely must reading for anyone approaching fifty
I have never read any medical book--let me amend that--any book that set off so many alarms and bells simultaneously in my mind. This book has a great deal to say about aging, healthy heart function, mental acuity, and testosterone and other hormonal replacement benefits for both men and women. There is much fascinating information about testosterone and estrogen function in both men and women. He documents his arguments extremely well with case histories--particularly the relationship between lowered testosterone levels and heart disease, physical aches and pains, the ageing process in general, immune function, prostatitis and female bladder problems. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Go out and buy it today! (...)

Important Book
This book helped save my marriage. I was suffering from low sex drive, poor performance and general malaise and irritability. A doctor suggested I have my thyroid level tested, but it was normal range. Viagra only gave me massive headaches. Then an article I saw suggested this book. It is very readable and informative, but most of all balanced: It does not advocate testosterone treatment as a cure-all for everyone or everything. I had my blood retested, and discovered that I had a severe case of testosterone deficiency. I began the treatments advocated by Dr. Shippen. It took trying several different methods of application (because my level was so abnormal), but within about 8 months, my testosterone levels were normal. Thank you Dr. Shippen.

God sent!
I would like to say that I have read several parenting books, and Dr. Greg Cynaumon has hit the nail on the head with this book. It is a great combination of practical psychology and God's message. But he doesn't bombard you with religious messages. Rather he allows you to see how both science and religion go hand in hand. It is amazing how I can understand the children in my life differently since reading the "DQ Factor".

I am recommending and will even purchase this book for my friends and family. If you haven't read it you should take the time.

Personality specific parenting advice- Finally!!!
This book allows you to define the type of child you have FIRST and then gives you ways to deal with (and ways not to deal with) your specific child. Parents know that not all children are alike- and, thankfully, Greg Cynaumon knows that, too. His book is the first I have found that does not give general advice for solving the behavior problems. The advice is totally individualized for each child's personality and works like nothing else ever has! I have purchased so many books on strong willed children, whining, fits, tantrums, back talk and many others. In fact, my husband rolled his eyes at my purchasing yet another parenting book. Unlike the general "answers" found in all of those, however, this book offers detailed advice that fits my child. Greg offers several different alternatives to getting your child's attention that actually work because they are formulated for each child's personality. It is amazing! What works for my daughter does not work for my son and I now know how to handle each of them to prevent or stop bad behavior.
Greg's law enforcement and religious background add so much to the phsycological side of him and it is evident in his writing. It is such a relief to have someone with real world experience that understands strong willed children write a book on parenting. This should be required reading for every parent- whether your child is easy going or a demon in the making!
Thank you, Greg Cynaumon! My sweet child is back (with a deck of chores that works like a charm!)and my whole family is happier and calmer!

Very, Very Helpful
As a mother of a 12 year old daughter and 11 year old son I almost got the feeling I was too late. However, after I purchased this book and read it in one day I am happy to report IMMEDIATE results in dealing with my children. The book is well written and humorous (which is helpful considering most books like this are Dry to say the least). It was a fun read and I found myself laughing and relating to many of the families discussed in the book. It is also easy to read and one that you can refer back to when faced with any difficult situation. I highly recommend this book to anybody who has children of any age.

GREAT book with Excellent Ideas to Gain and Boost Energy
Well written, lively book with exceptional suggestions for regaining energy, invigorating yourself, and removing energy zappers. Definitely recommended and it would be a great compliment to EFFORTLESS WELLBEING by Evan Finer, an excellent book on being authentically well and strengthing your energy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I will read this again and savor every word.
For as simply written as this book is, it has moved me profoundly. I've read it slowly maybe a chapter or two here and there over the weeks, but every chapter has had so much for me to think about. It has no psycho-babble just plain common sense advise that makes you go "Duh! Why didn't I see this on my own!" Thank you Mira Kirshenbaum. I just read the chapter on "Emotional energy and your work life" and it was exactly what I needed at this time. Each chapter has been very helpful, but this one spoke to me personally. Anyone even remotely considering buying this book - don't hesitate. You obviously are looking for answers - I believe this book will give you good ones.

Excellent book!
I just want to say that The Emotional Energy Factor is the best self-help book that I have bought in years. I have just finished it and will reread it again, being sure to take notes this time. It was like taking a class on HOW TO FEEL BETTER AND ENJOY YOUR LIFE. I absolutely LOVED it and cannot brag about it enough! GREAT JOB!---Barbie D.

"There's ALWAYS room at the Top," Daniel Webster said, and
after reading the Alladin Factor you wonder how many times will I have to hear, "Ask and you shall receive," before it sinks in? Jack and Mark are like the postal service; They Deliver. Within the synergy only these two create, is the key to acquiring what you desire - ASK! Rub the lamp and ask the genie who lives inside us all for the Courage to open your mouth. We used to say nothing bad can happen when you ask at the end of the day - If it's been a good day and you receive by asking, it just got Better; if you ask and don't receive, who cares it's been a good day anyway. If it's been a Bad day and you don't receive, don't beat yourself up, it's been a bad day. BUT, if it has been a bad day and you Do Receive - Shazamm! - you just changed the WHOLE DAY. And not only that day but the next day and the next - You have the POWER to Ask. Desire without Action is a Wish - Read this book to begin making your wishes come True. Way to Go, guys, Another W! inner -- Keep Smilin' Mike Redding

"Better than chicken soup"
I have read books and listened to tapes by both of these co-authors. Their writing style and story telling ability is matched by few. This book is full of life stories, told by people--not about people. I generally do not like anecdotal or biographical books. This one however, was different. I loved it. If you think you never get anything from life, or you just don't know how to get what you really want--Read this book. It contains many great teachings about how to ask, as well as how to help others. It was definitely worth the time and effort to read this book.

Another great book from Jack Canfield and friends
The main idea of this book is that you must learn to ASK!

But it goes much more than that. Jack Canfield's story about himself (right in the begin of this book), shows you that even asking FROM YOUR OWN WIFE, needs to be done is a proactive manner.

Anyone who has any issue with asking, whether from your employer, your employees, your peers, your family and even yourself! Should read this book today! You don't have to live your life being afraid to ask. There is another way. This book shows you how.

The Resilience Factor
Published in Digital by Broadway Books ()
Authors: Karen Reivich, Dr Andrew Shatte', and Andrew Shatte
Amazon base price: $9.60
List price: $12.00 (that's 20% off!)
In the capable hands of psychologists Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatté, resilience is not a Band-Aid or a buzzword. It is a habit of mind. The Resilience Factor is a practical roadmap for navigating unexpected challenges, surprises, and setbacks at work and home. Their premise--that your thinking style determines your resilience--underlies the books promise: you can boost resilience by changing the way you think about adversity.

The authors synthesize decades of research in cognitive psychology, particularly the work of Aaron Beck and Martin Seligman, to create seven practical strategies for bouncing back. Each strategy demonstrates how "thinking styles" affect emotions and behavior. "The secret is accurate thinking, not positive thinking," they explain. After completing a "Resilience Questionnaire," readers learn to turn off negative thoughts, avoid thinking traps, detect "icebergs"--the basic beliefs that cause us to overreact--and restore perspective. Each strategy is illustrated with vivid examples, including acting-out teenagers, battle-torn marriages, downsized workplaces, and the loss of loved ones. This insightful book offers clear descriptions of resilient thinking and workable tools for changing our minds. --Barbara Mackoff

Average review score:

easy to understand, analytic, but too cliched
I brought this book because I am a stressed out college undergrad trying to place a deterrent to the inevitable stresses and concerns everyday. After reading the author's bio, I decided to purchase it. After flipping through the first pages, though, i realize that it is a book with too much ambition - although a little bit of everything is talked about (post-traumatic stress/other psyc stuff, think patterns, life-stories), it tries to reach all different types of audiences - parents, lovers, managers. It is helpful, but I would not recommend it if you want to own this book like a life line.

You can develop your own resilience program with the book
This is a self help book to enhance readers¡¦ ability to ¡§persevere and adapt¡¨ to adversities. Authors preached that thinking style is the most critical factor. They introduced 7 skills, which are pretty comprehensive ¡V before and after non-resilient events, short term and long term, physical and underlying belief. 3 of the skills are about knowing thyself, 4 are about changing thyself.

I find myself getting emotional easily, not persistent when facing challenges, shy from reaching out in life. The book is useful. First, it helps me to understand my problems better (A ha ! ¡K that¡¦s me ! ). Second, the materials assist me to develop a program to increase my resilience (e.g. be more conscious of incidents that turn on my emotions).

The book is motivational. It encourages people to believe they do have control of their life. It is easy to read, and properly structured.

Resilient Thinking is Constructive Approach to the Negatives
I agree that 7 is a lucky number, not just for book titles or subtitles. The authors focus on "the thinking rather than feeling side of the human psyche, but their intent is to ultimately affect readers' emotional reactions through helping them reprogram their thoughts." New directions in cognitive therapy, such as this book, are helping people live better lives. I recommend this book highly -- it is almost as good as my favorite, The Positive Power of Negative Thinking by Julie Norem. Resiliency is a good name for adaptive, constructive strategies for dealing with negative thoughts and feelings. For those of us who don't want to be optimists, being 'resilient' is as good a label as 'constructively pessimistic' or any other.

Common sense stuff, religious overtone
The author is a therapist and discusses cultivating and maintaining intimate relationships for both friendships and straight marriages. The book's religious overtones (references to the Bible, Jesus, and God) increase as one gets further into the book. The book was written in 1979 and does not discuss alternative lifestyles when it comes to intimacy. However most of the principles are applicable.

The contents is good common sense stuff, spelled out in a compassionate constructive manner. Sometimes it's good to see the obvious spelled out to make it obvious and fully benefit from it. I feel the book was useful.

What if You Really Were Listened To ?
Reading this book, once again, I was very touched in so many areas. But I was especially touched by his analogy of how many people set goals to accomplish material landmarks, people who continue to work towards those goals, until they have surpassed those goals. But, who have you ever met who sets a goal to have one confidant to tell everything to, who also tells everything to that person? Who sets a goal to have friends on various levels, besides that one confidant?

Not many of us do this, because this means exposing parts of ourselves that we have spent our lives running away from, and filling up with material possessions.

But if you will just visualize yourself setting this goal, and all that this will mean to you, you will get more than you expect, and all that you can handle.

Read this book because you are a human being, worthy of being listened to, while you experience your soul connecting to another's soul, as you feel safe to be who you are, right now.

You will grow beyond your wildest dreams.

I love this book
I am writing this review because I firmly believe that my life will be incomplete without friends. My personal history is full of troubles and problems with people. I have a hard time dealing with my friends. Anyway, my roommate have this book lying around, so I picked it up. I read it and I really like the suggestions. I found some of the short stories to be really heartwarming and strong.

After reading this book, I have some self motivation to become a better person and a better friend. In some sense, I think this book gave me a lot of personal growth. I subsequently became a better person and I think I am more sensitive now than before. My awareness and motivation have changed my attitude and technique in talking to people.

I heartily recommend this book for anybody who wants to know how to be a better talker, listener or friend.

The Sot-Weed Factor

Average review score:

A Masterpeice of Satire!
Perhaps most impressive of all of John Barth's picaresque classic is the fact that it succeeds on many levels. It is quite difficult to imagine anyone taking this novel completely seriously, however it can be read as an epic. Most likely it will be enjoyed as a brilliant satire providing most readers with innumerable passages that will have them laughing out loud. However one senses many philosophical statements and themes communicated through the characters' preposterous actions and attitudes. It was the characters, in fact, that impressed me the most about "The Sot-Weed Factor," while appearing at times ridiculous to the point of being hilarious, most readers will likely find a little bit of themselves in characters like Ebenezer Cooke, Henry Burlingame, etc. My favorite character was Ebenezer's servant whose name eludes me at this time. Barth has coined himself a "smiling nihilist" and this book is a fine example of this sentiment, though most readers will likely spend less time smiling and more time doubled over in laughter. A must-read!

I'll never look at an eggplant the same way again
If you've read the book, then you know exactly what I'm talking about and are probably doubled over in laughter just at the mention of it . . . if you haven't, well there's just one more reason to start reading this. Widely considered Barth's best novel (I'm very much a novice with him, this being only my second book so I'm no man to judge) I can easily see why it deserves such a status. A parody of historical novels, Barth writes the story in the style of that time so it seems like all those books your teachers made you read in high school, but better. The book is massive and concerns the various adventures of would-be poet Ebenezer Cooke, writer of the poem "The Sot-Weed Factor" as he becomes involved, willingly or otherwise, in more situations than any man should reasonably have to undertake. An attempts to summarize the plot are useless, it's too sprawling, people who want instant gratification will be at a loss here, this is a book you have to absorb over the course of a few days and get used to the style before it sinks in just how much fun it is. The characters play everything seriously, making the jokes (and there are plenty, with the funniest of a vulgar nature and often involving the story of Captain John Smith of Pocohantus fame) come off as utterly hilarious, but at the same time Barth manages to make you care just a little bit about them, as quirky as they are, they still come across as typically flawed human beings. Probably the best thing about the book is its sheer unpredictability, not shackled by the morals of the 16th century, anything and everything does happen, nobody is what they seem and situations shift gears so rapidly that it'll make your head spin even as you can't stop laughing. A truimph on nearly every level, this is something a lesser writer would have only managed to turn into a stale stylistic genre exercise, something to wow the kids in the creative writing workshop . . . what Barth creates here is something lasting and no matter what century it was written in or evokes, will probably wind up being timeless.

Not much to add to other glowing reviews...
... but this and GILES GOAT-BOY are masterpieces of deconstructed Americana. The depth of Pynchon, the wit of Heller and Roth, the linguistic brilliance of, well, Barth: it's all here.

Good read....
I really enjoy Chris Roger's books, but wouldn't mind seeing less of Parker in the coming books of the series. Why is it a female character who whines about the dangers of her husband/boyfriend's job is a harpy, but we excuse the same behavior from a male character? Love Dixie, but Parker's got to go!

Another great "Factor"
Chris Rogers continues to keep us totally involved with Dixie Flanagan and her man Parker. I loved the first two books in this series and this one lived up to my expectations, though I think we saw a gentler Dixie this time. The writing is smooth and the story gets the reader involved immediately. I highly recommend this book.

Dixie is back!
Do you know where your grandmother is right now? She might be so lonely she's turned to someone with a hidden agenda for comfort. She might be robbing a bank. She might be getting herself killed. Chris Roger's heroine returns in this third novel in the Dixie Flannigan series and Chill Factor will have you wondering from page one how some sweet old women connected up with such nasty bad guys, but the biggest question will be, How can Dixie stop these mind-control experts from claiming more victims? A satisfying read in a great series with a strong heroine.

Why is this book so hard to find?
I first read this book when I was 16 and to this day I regard it as the best 'non-classic' piece of fiction I've ever read. Unfortunately, I loaned it to all and sundry and lost my copy. Since then, I've felt compelled to tell everyone how fantastic it is, but they can't possibly understand unless I tell them the secret of the ending (which, of course, I cannot). Buy it. Read it. Marvel at it. But don't think of lending it to anyone, even your closest friend!

The Random Factor
this is one of the best books that no one knows about. it is a great thriller/suspense murder mystery that you will never want to put down. even if you don't like mysteries you'll like this one.
it may be hard to find, but you should still try to find it. it will be worth the work!

Simply the best!!!
I can't find words for this book. It's the best one I've ever read. It's simply the best!
