I took a course in which the 1st edition of this book was adopted. This book is designed for educating students not only
from academic approach but also from practical one. The casebook even included case files. It makes the casebook very characteristic
and interesting, but to achieve this object, it had to omit many materials that are included in other major casebooks. If
you would like to study civil procedure in detail, you should avoid a professor who adopts this casebook. If you would like
to enjoy the class filled with practical exercises, you should take a course of a professor who adopts this casebook. This
book is not suitable for legal research for the same reason above.

As the author I'm prejudiced. But since Amazon didn't list my name correctly, I had to take action. really, this is about
the only quantitative analysis of Durkheim's thesis that religiously oriented activity creates "psychic strength." Also, examines
the relationship of group ritual (a la Weber) to psychic strength.

In my opinion, this book is overpriced. I have not finished reading it, but I have a general feeling so far that a book going
for US$ 45 has to deliver. It does not matter whether it is a hard-copy. The book has some incomplete sentences, something
I honestly did not expect considering the level it is targeted for - well-read business executives, etc.
That said, it gives what I think is useful information for someone in hurry.

Egan has made several books from one therory which he appeared to constantly develop! although this may lead us to thinking
that this is organic it has remained a model of helping or counselling that never reaches new depths or broadens its client
group. Its strength is that its simplicity makes it a very easy model to teach which which gives students easy to follow pathways
to counselling skills - probably this is why it was so popular on counselling courses in the UK for so long. Does anyone
know if Egan has written a later than the 5th Edition or what he is currently publishing.

This 8th edition could easily be replaced with the 7th edition for a lot less money. The chapters contain basically the
same information AND the 7th edition comes with a cd with strategies and the 8th edition does not have any extras. This is
a paperback book and for the money, you would be better off saving it and getting the 7th edition.

Preposterous and disappointing

I really liked her first novel, and liked the premise and promise of this at the beginning. However, the plot was preposterous
- NOBODY would act the way these characters do at the end. Why do the black and lower class white characters speak in dialect,
but the "resepctable" whites don't ? The druggie low life types were straight out of a made for TV movie - cardboard and unbelievable.
We know she can write well, so why crank out comething like this ? I only finished it (grumbling all the way) because I wanted
to know the solution to the mystery, and guess what ? More disappointment.

After 'The Secret History', which made Tartt a near cult figure in literary circles, she took 10 years to come up with her
sophomore novel. Well, so much for the long wait... To be fair, the writing is good, with a clear portrayal of a small Mississippi
town and an extended family living in the aftermath of a grisly unsolved murder of a 9 year old.
Harriet, the baby sister of the murder victim, picks up the thread of the mystery 12 years later, and opens up a pandora's box of secrets... However, Tartt lingers over too many characters and their side stories to get to where she is going, and the climax is, alas, a letdown, and the reader feels frustrated that the key characters don't seem any closer to achieving redemption and/or catharsis in the end.

I will add my voice to those who are shocked at the many poor reviews given to this outstanding novel. I agree that the plot
is somewhat weak, and I admit it took me over 100 pages before I developed a true interest in the story and the characters.
However, what I found captivating is Ms Tartt's incredible gift for describing the tiniest detail - the most mundane occurences
- in a way that makes them seem profound and significant. She does an excellent job of humanizing the most unsavory characters,
and helps us to understand the complex circumstances that create human character and personality.
As someone who grew up in a small, nothing-of-a-town in the south during the 70s, I was was stung by the accuracy of her descriptions of racism and classism in that society. Tartt understands and delineates the essence of the old south without cliches and stereotypes.
Overall, a great book. If you can make it through the bit, it's smooth sailing after that.

A novel of total immersion

I have never written an online review, but it seems those of us who loved this book are in the minority. I was shocked
at the reviews and low rating, which begs correction by more of us who found the The Little Friend a book of genius for its
intricate plotting, in-depth characters, psychological accuracy, atmospheric terrain, and social history. It is a triumph
on all these levels and more. Tartt's language is exquisite in capturing the voice of each and every character. Her analogies
and metaphors, perfect. Her pacing, whether rapid or molasses slow (as if you are experiencing the action in real time) suits
every scene as we readers are so totally immersed in the story, we feel as if we are within the very skin of each character
(sometimes, a very scary place to be). I also marvel at her ability to make even the worst reprobate seem, at least the eensiest
bit sympathetic. Okay, perhaps not Farrish.
The Litmus test for me as a reader is to make me care, to make me think, to make me feel. Check. And, for a narrative to never, ever, be predictable, but inevitable. Check.
The Secret Friend is one of my top 10 books of all time (Mockingbird being in that small number). I do not always agree with reviews, but in this case, I'm on board with the glowing critques in The New Yorker, Salon.com, and The New York Times, to name a few. I rarely re-read a novel. However, I will re-read this one at some point, savoring every detail. I did not want it to end, but thought it ended perfectly.

I can't help but think of Tartt's work as a collection of very dark, old, detailed postcards or photographs placed in an
album so that each vignette leads the reader to the next. The mood, description and dialogue are rich, and, as with The Secret
History, she is relying more on the journey (wordsmithing) than the destination (plot). Speaking for myself, if I'm really
enjoying the journey I can give the destination a lot of leeway, however even the most patient reader will find the abundance
of description wearing. Some careful editing could have tightened up both the story and your inner coil. But even so...what
to do with that ending...

Hmmm... seems there are lots of people who don't like their phys chem book.
The one you want is Physical Chemistry , 4/e by Laidler, Meiser, Sanctuary, ISBN 061815292X. It's the most student friendly text on the market.
Description on their website says "With its clear explanations and practical pedagogy, Physical Chemistry is less intimidating to students than other texts, without sacrificing the mathematical rigor and comprehensiveness necessary for a junior-level physical chemistry course. The text's long-standing reputation for accessible writing provides clear instruction and superior problem-solving support for students." I second that.
see my review here Physical Chemistry. I mention the alternatives as well.

I took physical chemistry only two years ago and I must say that this text is one of the better introductions that you'll
find on the subject. It is laid out very clearly and throughly and unlike Atkin's Molecular Quantum Mechanics, it's very easy
to follow and understand the concepts. It takes a lot of work to understand pchem, especially for the less physics and mathemathically
gifted chemistry student. But Atkins goes through every derivation until the very end unlike other writers who assume that
you know how to do half of it yourself. The examples are very helpful and the text itself contains very little typos and errors.
The margins contain enough white space to make little notes if you're into writing all over your textbook.
Final word- If you're a biochemistry/chemistry student like I am, do yourself a favor and get this book as early as you can. It'll save you the trouble of getting a copy later on.
