My Husband teaches third and fourth year university students, and found this to a valuable resource for an e-commerce management paper. His comments:
This is well written (interesting even!) and informative on business models and relatively current cases, the book avoids getting into technical detail. Excellent for the purpose of getting IT strong students to think about where they fit and how their skills can complement others.
I would suggest that this text be useful for senior IT or Management students alike.

I am passionate about E-Commerce. But, I am disappointed with most books on the topic. This is a HUGE exception. This is a great book that captured my imagination and pushed my thinking. This book does a great job explaning the CONCEPTS and IDEAS that drive E-Commerce. I HIGHLY recommend it to anybody whose job involves E-Business or E-Commerce.

Great book. Highly recommended.

Sandeep was the instructor for our E-commerce MBA class (University of Washington Bothell, Class of 2002), and we had the pleasure of 'revewing' initial drafts of some of the book's chapters. Most e-commerce books have been written by IS professionals and academics, focusing on information architechture and process redesign. A key reason for my preference of this book over other similar books, is the author's big-picture yet detailed focus on business models, maketing and technology (technical overview of the Internet). I suspect the author's background in marketing played an important role in designing this book with this three-pronged, interdisciplinary approach.

I was most impressed by the way 'Humble Tale Wise Fare' brings the wisdom of the dharma into daily life, and showed me how to apply the teachings in work, studies, relationships, etc. Written in poetry, the style brings out the natural beauty, simplicity and directness of Ch'an, and throughout remains readable and readily comprehensible. Most importantly, it really delves into the essence of of the teachings, and produces understandable knowledge which really connects with me, and which helps me handle the worlds within and outside my mind with much more confidence, wisdom and skill. I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in bringing the spirit of the dharma into their lives and developing themselves and their practice.

Simple complete thoughts we can apply to our daily life.

Humble Table, Wise Fare written by Venerable Master Hsing Yun is a profound collection of philosophy and thoughts, following the Dharma, that can be easily enjoyed and understood not only by practicing Buddhists but by all people. The philosophy that he shares with us are conveniently put together into simple complete thoughts that make sense and can be directly applied into our daily life. This book is a great tool for us to enhance our own knowledge of ourself and our relationships with other people. After completing the book, I have been able to use it in my Buddhist practice by flipping back through it and picking one or two thoughts for a given day. Then taking those thoughts contemplating on them and applying them as I have gone on through out my daily routine. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to deepen their knowledge and relationship with themself and others.

I've taught an undergrad course in Public Administration four times, and have used the Shafritz book every time. It is an excellent introduction for undergrads because it so well written and easy to read. The stories are useful, the illustrations helpful. It covers a broad range of topics, both theoretical and practical.

I highly recommend the book to anyone teaching a course in public administration, though it's not just for casual reading.

If you are interested in the broad spectrum of public administration, this is a great book to start with. It covers what public administration is, politics and public policy, government management and reinvention, intergovernmental relations, ethics, org theory and OB, leadership, finance and HR, and program evaluation, among others. It also has case studies and review questions for each chapter and other helful resources. Yet, probably the best thing is that it is written in a very readable way. This text would be good for Bachelors or Masters students, especially with its key concepts, bibliography, recommended books and related websites. I enjoyed it in a Masters class, and can recommend it.

I have the first edition of this book and, unlike other professors, he did not lecture verbatim from his own book. I appreciated this.

His lectures are dynamic, humorous and insightful. His books can give you a fine taste of his vast knowledge but don't adequately reflect his excellent teaching style.

Furthermore, his material applies directly to your career. No matter what career you choose. He makes certain that there are contemporary touchstones and references. I went directly from his upper level classes into a career in PR and Marketing Communications with confidence that I would never encounter issues similar to his case studies. Wrong!

The funny thing about his writings and lectures is that they trigger epiphanies over a period of years.

I made only average grades in his classes (they are VERY difficult and I admittedly didn't always apply myself) but I am able to quote key legal cases, recall ethics case-studies and comprehend media principles that most people with years in the MarCom/PR field can't even grasp.

If you get a chance, buy any of his publications. If you feel bold and really seek some enlightenment on Media Ethics and Law issues, you should call Oklahoma Christian University and request any of his lecture videos.

If you are reading this Dr. P, I'm still waiting on your book on Media Law. I liked ethics but your media law courses rocked!

I have gone on to become an Information Technology engineer and yet still find myself applying knowledge gained from his courses. (Such as Intellectual Property law, copyrights, libel and fair use.)

In case you folks think I'm a shill, it should be noted that I haven't been in contact with Dr. Patterson since around 1991 and I'm fairly certain I was among his least-promising students, so we had no casual relationship.

Regardless of this, I credit his classes and books as the major force for saving my professional and, to some extent, my personal life, from self-destruction.

Most books on ethics and laws are boring. And those that aren't boring usually lean towards not giving any practical information. This book, however, is different.

Each chapter has information to explain a specific ethical question, then a real-life example of how that question might come about, then more questions to stimulate responses. I had the honor of being in a Media Ethics class taught by the author, and our discussions were always A) in depth B) heated C) helpful.

If you are considering becoming a journalist, photographer, tv personality or any other sower of information, read this book. It will help you to formulate your opinions now, instead of being stuck in an ethical no-win situation later.

Read it.

Eileen Power studies the Middle Ages, not from an abstract historical point of view but from simple and real people and what we can know about them. I particularly like her study of Marco Polo, from his notes and diaries, which gives us a materialistic and realistic vision of what they saw of the world, and not what we want to see of what they saw. I also loved Madame Eglentyne, a prioress taken from Chaucer but at once identified to one particular prioress through real life archives and descriptions. A very interesting and useful book to enable us to capture the density of everyday life in the Middle Ages.

A view of History from the Medieval Kitchens

Review Date: 2003-05-16
Eileen Power's Medieval People sets out to study the Middle Ages not from the viewpoint of an Historical abstraction, but rather from that of the people who lived during the age. It is an account of six individuals who lived during the MA's; Bodo, a Frankish Peasant; Marco Polo, the famous Venetian merchant; Madame Eglentyne, prioress of Chaucer; an anonymous middle-class Parisian housewife; and two English merchants, one engaged in the wool trade and the other a clothier in Essex. The author has illustrated various aspects of social life of the era by drawing on such sources as account books, diaries, letters, records, and wills. She starts the work with a previously unpublished essay entitled "The Precursors," which describes the barbarian conquest of Rome. In this, she describes the lives of three men, Ausonius, Sidonius and Fortunatus and uses them to foreshadow the life that would re-emerge in the Middle Ages.
She starts by imagining a day in the life of the Peasant Bodo, in the time of Charlemagne. From her study of primarily economic documents from the Middle Ages of this time, she not only extrapolates but truly brings to life Bodo and his wife Ermentrude. From there, she goes on to the better documented life of Marco Polo, and also describes how he served as an inspiration for Columbus. Madam Eglentyne is next. Here, Power humorously details the inner workings of a gossipy nunnery and how Eglentyne would have gone about her life as an aristocratic women of God. She next details the life of a middle class Parisian housewife by studying the contents of the Menagier's Wife and validating many of it's points by citing other documents. She concludes by detailing the lives of the two Thomases; Betson and Paycocke of Coggeshall. Both are merchants and provide a chance for Power to really show off her grasp of medieval economics as well as an ability to compile disparate correspondences into a story of a life. This is a rare scholarly work that truly entertains while being read. One of the best books I've ever read.

Pioneering Look At The Life And Death Of A Frontier Town
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-02
While researching the town of Griffin for my own work, I was referred to Dr. Cashion's book by the curators of the Old Jail Art Center in Albany, TX. Not only is this book indispensible in any serious study of the town of Griffin, which was a hub of the cattle and buffalo trade in the mid-1800's (through which many notable western personas passed, such as John Selman -the killer of John Wesley Hardin, and the fabled poker queen Lottie Deno), it is also a fascinating account of the birth, life and eventual demise of a classic frontier boom town. Dr. Cashion's book, while also covering the whole of the Clear Fork Country (and also happily, its overlooked minority inhabitants), could almost be considered a biography of Ft. Griffin, if we can imagine the town itself as a personality. The book gives a fine description of the natural land as it was seen by its first inhabitants (and first European explorers), and goes on to describe the various elements (political, natural, social etc.) which led to the settling of the area. Griffin is treated with special interest, from its early beginnings as a military outpost, to its heyday as an outfitting and entertainment capital for buffalo hunters and later cattle outfits, to its oil days, and on through to its eventual decline. There are a great many interesting photographs, both of the land, of old surveying maps, and of the people who populated the area, white, black, and Indian. Of particular interest is the chapter `Just Plain Old Folks,' which records many of the daily doings, trials, and tribulations of the everyday citizens. Dr. Cashion writes with equal and obvious passion of the rawboned hunters and cattlemen, the violent sometimes gunmen like John Larn and Selman, who used both sides of the law to their own ends, the retired buffalo soldiers, just trying to make their living somewhere between the harsh trials of the land and the distrust of their white neighbors, and the women and children who found themselves living and working in lonely cabins far from the company of friends and neighbors. For this alone the book is worth it, but also worthy are the revisionist-minded attempts of the author to debunk the many stereotypes and outright falsehoods about the area which have passed as history for so long. Griffin the town is no more the blood-soaked, bullet-riddled Sodom of the west that it has sometimes been portrayed as in fiction and some history (an old biography of Doc Holliday comes to mind, and is once referred to by the author) than is any other myriad of western towns which has ever romantically laid claim to that misnomer. The stories of its people however, are no less interesting, and Dr. Cashion's book proves that. Highly recommended!

If you are interested in an approach to biology through the cell, natural selection, and genetics, this is for you
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-03
This is a text on biology that emphasizes the cell, evolution through natural selection, and DNA. These are all important and lead to a much better understanding of life on earth, but if you want a text that emphasizes the classifications of life forms on Earth, this text will likely not be what you want. However, if you want to get a handle on how cells work, how the various forms of cells are similar and different, what the very important chemical processes are in the cell, and how these are used by the various life forms on Earth, and how these life forms fit into and influence the ecology of their environment, this is a very solid text. It will help to have some basic understanding of chemistry because the book is based on that approach and doesn't bother to explain the basic concepts (if it did, it would become a chemistry text).

It is wonderfully illustrated and well organized text and its writing is clear and helpful. Yes, it necessarily simplifies the more detailed aspects of atomic structure and chemistry, but it does so in a way that the student knows that more study will be required to dig into that topic more fully.

It has 55 chapters that are organized into 9 large units (the book as about 1,300 pages long). The units are:

1) The Origin and Early Evolution of Life
2) Cell Structure and Function
3) Gene Structure and Expression
4) Developmental Biology
5) Evolutionary Processes and Patterns
6) The Diversification of Life
7) How Plants Work
8) How Animals Work
9) Ecology

I have found reading it to be helpful and informative. Again, the writing is quite clear and it uses illustrations very well to help the text make its points. The important thing to know is whether this is the kind of biology text you are looking for. I think it can help its readers learn to think about life and biology in a scientific way and help them develop the mental tools necessary to tackle deeper biological issues, and that is a good thing. The authors ask the students to check their understanding every step of the way with in chapter articles illustrating the point being made (and often asks questions to help focus thinking). Each chapter starts listing the most important points the chapter will make, and summarizes those concepts at the end. There are also a few multiple choice problems to help the student verify that he or she understands the big concepts of the material.

Each chapter also provides a concept review and topics for group discussion. There are also many online helps for the students that supplement what is given in the book. In the body of the text it points to the online supplementary material so the student can get additional insight to the material being studied.

If you ever wondered why you feel like a child hiding in an adult's body playing "grownup", this book is for you. The authors clearly explore the differences between "grownups" and "adults". "Grownups" are cut-off from their feelings and base their behavior on surface behavioral norms. "Adults" however, are able to comfortably integrate all their feelings without splitting them into "child" and "adult". The authors explain in a clear way how our self is a constant that all too often is parsed into pieces in order to satisfy the perceived expections of other "grownups". Afterall, we don't cross a magical threshold seperating childhood from adulthood.

I enjoyed the book so much I bought four copies to share with family and friends.

A highly readable guide of developing genuine adulthood

The authors contrasted characters of grownup with those of adult. Being adult means shedding of defensive and reactive mechanisms of grownups that shield oneself from experiencing the richfulness of life. Only when truly value the worthfulness and purposeful from inside, recognizing both power and limitation of human being, can one breaks free from the bondage of perfectionism and self-doubtfulness. A highly readable guide of personal growth and development
