Who said Intervention is Futile!Review Date: 2008-12-23
Crisis Mode By Michelle Larks is a collection of four novellas that make one heck of a interesting novel. Each story and their characters are developed so realistically, you can almost picture yourself in the settings. The responsibilities of Sharita Atkins, aka Rita caused her to grow into a wise intelligent young woman, who refused to make the same mistakes as her mother Barbara or her beloved grandmother Mah-Dear; even if it meant being separated from her one true love and the father of her children Tone. Jeanie Meyers entire life had been turned upside down due to her lack of self esteem and after refusing to take heed to the warnings of her sister Meme countless times. Desiree Cooper and Andre Jackson had less then two weeks to go before they were married, and within 72 hours of their moment of matrimony, infidelity, scorned emotions, old family issues and doubt put those plans in grave threat. Marsha Ann and Marty, two siblings who fought amongst one another since children, almost caused their deep routed family traditions to be shredded apart at the seems, after their mother suffered a stroke that in the long run, changed the entire family's life from that point forward.
Within each story, although all of them were different, there seemed to be some sort of connection. I'm sure anyone who reads this book can make a similar connection between the characters and their own lives. What I liked most about the piece was the fact that intervention and communication was always the key to sorting out each and every issue. At times, tempers were flying, and morale was so low, some of the characters couldn't see past their current circumstances. Other characters like my girl "Meme" were so strong, it was difficult for her to understand the weakness in others. But you always had one or two level headed individuals in each chapter, who knew how to pick their battles wisely!
One can tell Michelle truly put her heart and soul into this one, I just wish each novella was a full novel, because I would have liked to know where Tone an Rita finally settled, if Jamal and his father ever had their meeting, If Andre was really telling the truth, and if Marsha and Marty continued their truce'. Maybe she'll do a Crisis Mode Part II!

In the Time of a CrisisReview Date: 2006-09-10
Jeanine has always felt like an outsider while her sister, Meme, has always been the outgoing and beautiful type. Being a late bloomer at so many things, it was not a surprise that she married well after Meme. Having been so shy and sheltered, Jeanine cannot come to grips with leaving the one person who makes her life a living hell. Her husband James has continuously shown violence mentally and physically towards her until one day her violence has him pay a price that he will never forget. Will Jeanine also have to pay for her negligence and shy demeanor?
Desiree has been through thick and thin with her fiancé Andre and now their big day is approaching. Living on cloud nine, Desiree finds a damaging piece of evidence that can land her right back where she came from - lonely, depressed and in her mother's arms. Will she take the advice of someone that she has hated for years or will she go with her own mind and dump Andre for good?
Marsha is the oldest child of three. Her mother has always been her backbone and continues to be the glue that holds this close knit family together. As mother's health fails and she suffers from a severe stroke, the family realizes that their matriarch might not be around forever as they assumed. Being as headstrong as when she was healthy, mother has only two dying wishes. Can the family come together without the help and support of their dying mother?
Four incredible short stories that will leave you emotional and yearning to hug the ones you love.

In the midst of the stormReview Date: 2005-12-15
The second novella, "Family Secrets", is about Jeanine Meyers who suffered through domestic violence. One very tragic night Jeanine's son, Jamal walks into the room as his father is beating her. While Jamal is in the room his father severely injures him. Jamal is left in a coma and Jeanine is trying to deal with what has happened to her family. There is one secret that Jeanine's family has kept from her for several years and may explain why she does not feel like she is a part of the family.
"Letting Go", is about a couple that is getting ready to get married. Desiree Cooper is planning her wedding and decides to get her fiancée's tuxedo cleaned. When Desiree checks the pockets of the tuxedo, she finds a woman's phone number and an opened box of condoms. After finding this Desiree does not know what to do. She decides to go to her estranged mother's (Mia) house. Desiree and her sister have not spoken to Mia in years because of Mia choosing a boyfriend over her children. When Desiree gets there she decides to listen to her mother and does what she needs to do.
The last novella, "Family Meetings" is the story of Marsha Douglas and her family. The family has to come together to make some serious decisions about Anna (Marsha's mother). Anna has had a stroke and the family must pull together to help. Marsha and her sister have arguments about their mother and must learn to get along with one another. The family decides to have a family meeting for all of them to come together and do the right thing. This story reminds me of the movie "Soul Food."
Crisis Mode is about unplanned pregnancy, domestic violence, infidelity, and family issues. Ms. Larks has given readers from all walks of life an engaging story to read. Each character was well developed and made the reader relate to what the characters were going through. At times I wanted to shout at characters that made me angry. There were also times where I wanted to give advice to the women in the stories. Crisis Mode is definitely an uplifting read.

I was on the radio, I listen to radio, and I love music . . . .Review Date: 2007-10-28
Jim Ladd has an excellent writing voice in this piece.
This would be a a great book to gift to someone who is in the music business or on the radio!
The Spirit of Radio?Review Date: 2003-08-28
As a fellow left-leaning radio jock, I enjoyed Jim's book documenting the counterculture-inspired beginnings of free-form FM radio. Ladd knows about the music and has a strong respect for it - including its lyrics - that I like to believe I share. (Too many people in this business are woefully ignorant about the artists, albums, songs, and lyrical messages.)
The underlying theme of the book is the good versus evil tale of "the jocks against the suits," the DJs versus management, art going fist-to-fist with commerce. Commerce and the alleged capitalistic bad guys ultimately win, but for a moment there was something special, wasn't there? For a moment we were all simultaneously rocking-out to the longer "deep cuts" from albums by true musical artists, instead of listening to the mindless pulp released by mainstream pop stars. And nowadays - with lax FCC regulations that allow corporations to buy all the radio stations they want - the "art" is lacking and "the format" reigns. Let's blame the fall of radio on those big corporations that are directly responsible... Clear Channel, Infinity Broadcasting, et al.
Let me now take a right turn and criticize the book. Ladd fails to see how even a formatted radio station can be a source of artistic expression for DJs like he and I. Yes, Jim, even at "KASH" (with the PD telling the jock what to play) a radio DJ can commune with like-minded listeners and "bang the tribal drum." The station's sales department may not understand the music, but you and a fair portion of your audience do; a common bond that unites the jock and the listener. It doesn't matter that you aren't allowed to play "thematic sets" of music, you can still communicate and bond with your audience. All it takes is a little more subtlety, a bit of "creative cheating" with the format, and the love and knowledge of music you already possess.
Another criticism, although it's a nit-picky one. Ladd's frequent "tribal drum" analogy is peppered throughout the book and gets old after just the second chapter. The hippie-inspired "tribal drum" reference is Ladd's way of describing the intangible sense of community felt between a DJ and his like-minded audience. It gets multiple mentions in some chapters; really annoying! Ladd even scribbled something about "banging the tribal drum" in my radio co-worker's autographed copy of the book!
And Ladd changes the call letters of all the radio stations he mentions, and changes the names of half their employees as well. I wonder why, when just a little bit of digging would probably provide the inquisitive reader with the CORRECT NAMES of all the radio stations he worked for, and all the people he worked with.
Self Indulgence RulesReview Date: 2003-02-11
And why not? Commercial radio is based upon the simple premise that stations should play music that appeals to the largest number of people possible. The free form stations of the late 60s and early 70s were commercially viable when few people listened to FM. By the late 1970s, those days had passed. And in nearly every instance, when given a choice between listening to "free-form" progressive radio, and listening to tightly formatted rock radio, the tightly formatted station won (and wins) every time.
Ladd was one of the best of the jocks from those days. He had a good feel for the tastes of his audience. But most "progressive" DJs were lazy and self-indulgent. And judging from the book, Ladd took himself far too seriously.
All in all, however, this is an entertaining look at an interesting time in the history of radio programming. (It would have been even more interesting if Ladd hadn't felt it necessary to change the identities of many of the people he writes about.)

God UnpluggedReview Date: 2008-02-10
People teens admire talk about GodReview Date: 2007-04-13
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faithReview Date: 2007-03-11
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unpluggedReview Date: 2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!Review Date: 2007-01-25
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)

Special Forces Ops Then & NowReview Date: 2007-02-24
Well DoneReview Date: 2003-02-28
First of all; if you would like to know something about SOF, you should start reading the US doctrine of Spec Ops. This subject is not available for civilians for a while; as far as i know...it's apprx. 1100 pages.
But... you can study FM 21-75,FM 21-76 and FM 21-76-1.If you can get them...
In
addition i recommend FM 31-70 "Basic Cold Weather Training"
You should know that it won't be easy to find these now..But
they are a valueable asset in understanding some matters.
There is also an other book available:
Theory of Special
Operations(Case Study)
This one is a must read...Not only for enlisted personnel but also for civilians. And it's easy
to get this...
At last i would like to attend you on the fact of philosophy and warfare.. And why a soldair should be a thinker first..If you agree with me then you should read: Gates of Fire or Tides of War
Know that you won't find "Gates of Fire" nor "Tides of War" easy to read...
We must look retarded to the natives...Review Date: 2006-10-23
Special Forces often operate with indigenous populations, whose trust they must earn. It is not enough to learn some of the local language. It is important not to look stupid, or else all respect, and incentive to cooperate is lost.
FM 31-20 has some "cultural `No-No's" that would inevitably make us look stupid... Example: Page 289, "Dust Initiator". It says, as an example of "cultural stupidity":
"From 1.36 to 2.67 kilograms of surround should be provided for each 28.32 cubic meters of target."
This was clearly "translated" in response to a directive "go metric" from the original text:
"From 3 to 6 pounds of of surround should be provided for each 1000 cubic feet of target"
Whereas the original sounds practical, the "translation" sounds so stupid that only the retarded would want to work with us... Remember, those natives, just because they speak English with an accent, or not at all, are not dumber than we are!
What it should say is: "Use 1.5 to 3 kilograms of surround for each 30 cubic meters of target - or if you wish, for each target volume of 3m x 3m x 3m".
There are a large number of examples of this kind of "cultural dumbness" in the manual. This is not just hair-splitting. If they think we are dumb, they sure will not help us. Perhaps pretend to do so, but not for long...

Nice vegetarian resource that covers multiple ethnic cuisinesReview Date: 2006-07-10
The book is subdivided as follows:
Introduction
Starters and Salads
Soups and Stews
Sauteed & Stir Fried Vegetables
Boiled and Steamed Vegetables
Baked, Roasted and Grilled Vegetables
Beans and Legumes
Pasta, Polenta & Rice
Eggs and Cheese
Basic Recipes & Techniques
This book is vegetarian, not vegan. However, there are many recipes in the book that are vegan or that can be easily changed to make them vegan. As a new follower of the mostly vegan "Eat to Live" plan I have been purchasing vegetarian cookbooks with abandon looking for new flavor ideas. This book has added a number of new recipes to my cooking repertoire.
My overall observations about the book are as follows:
Pros:
1. Book covers many ethnic cuisines in its recipes
2. Recipe directions are very thorough
3. Covers many different techniques for preparing veggies (stir fry, baking, roasting, grilling, etc.)
4. Many but not all of the recipes are healthy
5. Color photographs of all the dishes are provided
6. Small book, doesn't take up too much room on the counter
7. Nice sturdy binding that will stand up to many years of constant use
Cons:
1. No desserts
2. Uses while flour where whole wheat would work
3. Uses full fat-bechamel where low-fat bechamel would work and be a healthier option
4. Uses full fat cream a little too liberally
As a cook that relies mostly on Italian Cuisine and that is new to mostly vegan cooking I found many ideas in this book that I could add to my family table. If you wish to expand your cooking to include multiple ethnicities in a vegetarian environment I would recommend this book. I have given this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it did not try to make the recipes healthier by reducing the white flour and full fat dairy where appropriate.

Yes, it deals with grief after a most desirable family member passes away. This Aunt Lupe has lived a most difficult life in Mexico City. It's a cultural look at poverty and the things people must do to simply survive. It was awakening as a reminder of how easily we forget. If there was an earth-shattering event...most of us (EVEN YOU) could be in a similar predicament. It's hard to fathom it possible but we are lucky to have what we do. If any of you have lost a loved one...the book is helpful in dealing with grief as well. Don't be turned off by the depressive title of the book as Oscar Lewis has contributed a fine piece of literature. It is quite the classic.
