Great pocket-sized Mahler reference
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-13
Although not able to fit in most pockets--(it is actually 5x8 inches in size, and about 100 pages long)--this little reference book does a good job of covering the life of Gustav Mahler and all his works.

With no illustrations, other than Mahler's photo on the cover, this little book is useful chiefly to classical music disk-jockeys, or to those of us who just want a quick briefing on Mahler.

The best aspect of this book is that it talks about each Mahler symphony, describing what was going on biographically in his life, AND provides a good description of each symphony. Whether you're a radio announcer preparing lead-in remarks, or like me--just a listener who wants to know what each Mahler work is about, this little book will really help.

delightful, short, eminently readable biography
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This 100-page volume is a good "Cliff Notes" biography of Beethoven, providing a chronological overview of Beethoven's life with descriptions of his major works interwoven into the text. The author briefly addresses Beethoven's childhood, and then focuses on the three recognized periods of the composer's life --early Beethoven, with a description of Beehoven's relationship with Mozart (and later other noted composers) and his adherence to classical style, the middle period following the composer's "Heilegenstadt Testament" (believed by many to be a suicide note), and the late period, during which Beethoven's music became very introspective. Following the biography, there is a complete listing by opus number of Beethoven's compositions, and then a list of recommended recordings.

This is a appetizer; it's a great book for someone who wants to learn about Beethoven but who is not yet prepared to plow through a long, technical biography. I understand that there is some controversy about Beethoven's life & love affairs -- this book doesn't address the controversy; it's a rather simple presentation, though it does present the basics well, and provides some background for someone who wants basic familiarity with the composer's life. Although it is hard to find, it may be available in public libraries. I highly recommend it.

I knew that this little book was an overview. I purchased it for my kids to help with their Boy Scout 'Radio' merit badge. They have read it at least 3 times each. They were very happy with the book and the information was easy for them (4th and 6th grade) to understand. I even understood all the parts since I am just learning about the subject.

With this, they are starting up a very very low power station for broadcasting. All, without any help from the "Grumps".

It also provided resources and links which helped out more.

If your expecting the everything in one inexpensive book, this is not it. It is a very good beginner book.

This is definitely something everyone should own.

Basically the entire handbook is taken up by the title.

My only caveat:
The binding is unknown.
I like to know my binding before I buy it.

A very interesting emergency neurology book, it is based in real case examples. The author review the literature on each topic, give their opinion and then express what they would do. At the end of each situation there is a "pros/con" of each therapy, wich helps you decide what you would do.

Excellent introduction in the mysteries of the Kabbalah
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-22
Although this book is out of print (written by the author in 1973, L.A.) I discovered a Dutch translation of it in a second-hand bookstore and was marvelled at the clarity and conciseness with which Albertson explains the basic principles of the Jewish mystical Tree of Life. The Otz Chiim is quite a complicated mystical model to explain the mysteries of creation, but this book catapulted me from one insight into the other. It is highly recommended for the "deep thinker", or "lover of heavy issues", the person who wants to look further and who remains unsatisfied by the official explanations for the existential questions provided by the three great monotheistic religions. It will also give open-minded Christians a chance to re-interpret texts in the Old Testament which have always remained obscure. This is a great book, written by a humble and knowledgeable teacher, who invites us to go up the path of insight as a candidate magician or mysticus, guided by the light of the ten Sephiroth of the Otz Chiim, the Tree of Life.
