An early scientific tale of space exploration.
The first full length novel I ever read as a child. Reasonably correct ( for the era ). An excellent read for the beginning Sci Fi reader. I have searched libraries for 20 years to rediscover it!

Great book for teens and younger, but story is dated.
I read this as a youngster and loved it. It's about Jack Strong, a boy, who gets to go on the first ship to Mars. But the story line is a bit dated, for today's readers, as the Lodestar takes off for Mars on June 1, 1971!

Useful (Army not included)
This book is THE guide to survival. Aside from the first chapter, which is mostly on the psychological effort of survival, all of the information contained within this book is written in a simple, instructive method that allows for easy reading and understanding. Some of the more complex knots and shelters can be hard to comprehend without practice, but all in all, any person who had the book on them could follow it to the letter and survive in some of the worst climates of the world. Also included is an excellent guide to plants and snakes of intrest, both of which are, while far from all encompasing, rather well done for the small part of the book they represent. And, in all honesty, their is almost no referance twords any armed service, making this a useful book for not only enlisted/formerly enlisted personel, but also hikers and mountain climbers. Even if you do not feel you will need this information, it is excellent reading. I reccomend this to anyone who has even the slightest interest in survival situations.

US Army FM 21-76 Survival
This is an outstanding resource for any individual interested in self-reliance in any type of environment on the planet. Concise and in depth information, excellent b&w photographs and detailed illustrations make this book an easy and informative read. This book is a MUST own.!

Why Are you a Transhuman is Essential Reading!
Social Change on the Head of a Pin

How many theories of social change can fit on the head of a pin and not fall off? As many as can balance.

Are You A Transhuman is essential reading because it presents the concept of multi-tracking in practices a way of living in the world that is on one hand highly technological and, on the other, very compassionate.

This book covers a broad range of transhumanist interests and perceived goals that have affected and will continue affect social change in the coming years. For example, FM-2030 was known for being a highly visionary individual. Because a myopic perspective in the fields of science, technology, and politics did not dogmatize his skills as a writer and lecturer, he could grasp ideas by a larger view.

Transhumans and transhumanism is not just about technology. It is about expanding human understanding and intelligence. This book is a collectable and a must read for anyone interested in the future of humanity.

The Classic Fm Guide to Classical Music: The Essential Companion to Composers and Their Music

A Fabulous Single-Volume Reference on Classical Music
This is it...the book to buy if you want to learn more about classical music. Packed with more information than other collections ten times its size, this volume serves as a guide to the history of music, classical composers and their essential works. Classic FM (a legendary British Classical radio station) has producced a "classic" of its own here...a book that will become an indispensible part of your library.

Here's what you get:

1. A concise history of music, from the earliest tonal experiments to the eclectic directions of the twentieth century;

2. An alphabetical list of composers, including a short biography, brief appraisal of his/her contributions, and a list of essential works;

3. Assorted tidbits of vital information, including a glossary of music terms, a list of most popular pieces, and much more.

4. The entire book is peppered with drawings, photographs, quotes and anecdotes.

I've literally worn out my copy of this book, marking it up extensively as I used it to develop my interest and appreciation for classical music. I recommend it heartily, with two "caveats": First, the author - understandably, since he's English - tends to emphasize recent British composers over American (for example, why is George Lloyd included and Alan Hovhaness not), and second, this is not a guide to specific recordings (there are other books that exist for that purpose, but don't do nearly as good of a job with the music itself as this one does). But these are minor comments. Anyone with even the slightest liking for music will find this fascinating, and they could even find themselves embarked on a lifelong study of the classics. Enjoy!

Freedom From Backaches
I can't believe this book is out of print. It is the best results-oriented book I've ever read on how to analyze your current back problem and, in addition, what exercises will improve your current condition. Written by two physicians with incredible experience and the right approach to the problem most people have with their backs. Basically the back's problem are related to the skeletal system and the muscles that support it. Without the proper strength and flexibility in the muscular system you will be exposing yourself to incredible life-long problems.

Why? The human skeleton in itself would fall down in a pile of bones without the strength of the muscular system. More importantly, the skeletal system could not function properly without a high degree of flexibilty in this system. So, when you let your muscular system get out of shape and you don't do anything (yoga, stretching or warming-up)to increase its flexibility every vertabre, joint and organ is headed for trouble once you put any stress on it or are involved in any type of accident.

Perhaps this is common sense now. But, when this book was first published it was a tremendous success. Now it should be taken and republished or a website should be developed around it. Millions of people are being taken for a ride by bad advice from physicians and chiropractors who just prescribe drugs, surgery or treatments when most of their problems could be solved through simple stretching and strengthening exercises.

Step-by-step details, lessons learned - excellent book!
If you are considering outsourcing we've just reviewed one of the most comprehensive and well organized publications on the subject. Outsourcing is not just a way to reduce costs; it is an essential element for achieving business excellence. Outsourcing enables an organization to focus on the things it does best - its core competencies. At the same time, through outsourcing it can leverage the resources and expertise of equally focused outside providers. The combined effect is a powerful management tool for competitive advantage, improved business performance, and operational transformation.
The Guide to FM Outsourcing written by Fred Klammt is devoted to Facility Services outsourcing only. It is a 350-page compilation of lessons learned and best known methods from FM outsourcing projects and industry experts.
This book was written for FMs (facility managers) who are looking to control costs, improve productivity, and improve service. The chapters in this book are organized similarly to how an organization would evolve their FM outsourcing program. They also include many sidebar discussions. Chapters include...

1.Make or Buy:
Strategic + Logistical FM Outsourcing
2.Owner's perspective
3.Customer's perspective
4.Supplier's perspective
5.FM Outsourcing Process
6.Create long-term relationships
7.Service and Work scope
8.RFP + Pricing
9.Contract T + C's
10.Performance Measurements
11.Transitions

Most FMs will find this book to be an easy read ... From Chapter Five on, the book details a step by step process that FMs can easily follow to implement outsourcing. FMs will find Chapters Eight through Eleven invaluable in developing and setting up an outsourcing contract.
The front cover page of each chapter includes the Table of Contents and a "Take Away" section summarizing the importance of the chapter. The "Key Points" section includes certain snippets of text from selected parts of the chapter. Throughout the book the term FM Owner refers to the internal facility management of the organization that is outsourcing the work.
This book will save you time and effort if you are new to outsourcing or even if you already have implemented several contracts. It will help you get up to speed when dealing with your contractors and make the whole process much smoother and trouble free.

Ludwig Van Beethoven: An Essential Guide to His Life and Works (Classic Fm Lifelines)

delightful, short, eminently readable biography
This 100-page volume is a good "Cliff Notes" biography of Beethoven, providing a chronological overview of Beethoven's life with descriptions of his major works interwoven into the text. The author briefly addresses Beethoven's childhood, and then focuses on the three recognized periods of the composer's life --early Beethoven, with a description of Beehoven's relationship with Mozart (and later other noted composers) and his adherence to classical style, the middle period following the composer's "Heilegenstadt Testament" (believed by many to be a suicide note), and the late period, during which Beethoven's music became very introspective. Following the biography, there is a complete listing by opus number of Beethoven's compositions, and then a list of recommended recordings.

This is a appetizer; it's a great book for someone who wants to learn about Beethoven but who is not yet prepared to plow through a long, technical biography. I understand that there is some controversy about Beethoven's life & love affairs -- this book doesn't address the controversy; it's a rather simple presentation, though it does present the basics well, and provides some background for someone who wants basic familiarity with the composer's life. Although it is hard to find, it may be available in public libraries. I highly recommend it.
