Really Disappointing Content in this book.
On first look at the table of contents, this looks like a great book. Once you get into the material, you will be disappointed. The examples are really poor. The author's style is confusing. He seems to get verbose when it's not necessary, and gives only brief explanations when he needs to explain further. There are so many VB books that are so much better. I have a large collection of VB books that I use when teaching programming courses at varying levels. Most authors include a disk or CD with extensive examples etc. This author wants $25 for a companion diskette?

Most informative book
I had this book with me when I was a programmmer back in India. I forgot to carry this book with me to the US. For the last 2 months I have been in the US I have borrowed a couple of books of various authors and various publications from my friends ,but no book has come close to this book. I often regret not having carried that book along with me.

This is a guide for beginners, but it's not dumbed down at all. Windows 2000: A Beginner's Guide takes on a giant piece of software and explains it, one component at a time. Author Martin S. Matthews has earned commendation for his patient approach to complex subjects and clearly written procedures that get right to the point. As a result of his efforts, readers get a great combination of explanatory text--how Windows 2000 works, what its features are for, and how you ought to use them--and crunchy how-to material. If you have a vague idea that certain features of Windows 2000 might make your organization more efficient, this book likely will help you make a deployment decision and, if you decide to go ahead, get the show on the road in a practical sense.

A typical section deals with Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows 2000. In his coverage of that software, Matthews explains how IIS fits into the rest of the Windows 2000 server before he launches into a discussion of how to plan for installation and then set up the software. From there, variations get attention--remote administration is a big one, as is upgrading from a previous IIS version. Matthews's section on automated installation of Windows 2000 is excellent, too. --David Wall

Topics covered: All operational aspects of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Server, explained for power users and system administrators. Emphasis goes to installation of the operating system, as well as network configuration and Internet connectivity. Linking to Novell NetWare networks gets lots of coverage, as does Active Directory.

Windows 2000 : A Beginners Guide
This book is NOT designed for beginner's.

The layout is confusing and fussy! It has not been written for beginners in mind or even those who have some basic idea of networking and of operating systems, like myself. You may find this book useful perhaps as a reference guide only.

Want to learn about Windows 2000? - pay the price and sit a tutored course and be led by example as to what the OS is about!, your money would be better spent.

Maybe it would be easier to understand if it were not written in American?

Making upgrading and configuring a little easier.
Think back to the early days of computers when DOS 6 appeared on the scene. Remember how important is was that there was some sort of reference material for the beginner. Now along comes Windows 2000 and this concepts is even more important now.

Martin Mathews knows how important this, and as an author of for than 50 books on computers, he has taken the time to make sure even the most inexperienced users will be able to use and work with Microsoft's newest creation, Windows 2000.

For under $40.00, this 600 plus page book covers both the Professional and server versions of Windows 2000. There is also coverage of migrations issues, deployment issues, networking, Internet communications, customizing and administration of both server and professional.

Lewis makes it easy to understand and the book is easy to follow. There are also eight pages of network blueprints to give you an idea of the different configurations possible. If you preparing for any of the new exams, this book is only a guideline. You will need other material to study from.

Overall this book exceeds my expectations and is one I will begin to use in the training arena. Matthews is certainly proved to the reader why he highly respected in the IT industry.

MCSE Flop
When I opened this book, I thought it would be a flop, god, was I right! It starts off talking about how this book will get you through the exam. I couldn't see how THAT will get you through the exam alone, if you decide that you want read this to prepare you for an MCSE exam, I recommend taking a boot camp to prepare you aswell. Overall, this book is not recommended. 2 stars

Windows 98 Answers
This book will not get you ready for any type of exam.... However, if you are looking for a book to HELP you with Windows this book will do that. No one book has all the answers to every question, this book will help you in finding out how Windows works and how to keep it working. The best thing about this book is, if you have a question or error, just look up the answer by looking up the question or error.

Note 1: I don't think that this book is for the beginning computer user. This book shows a person how to get into the guts of Windows.

Note 2: No book nor program is perfect, and remember Windows has been updated after this book came out.

Windows 98 for Busy People: The Book to Use When There's No Time to Lose! (Busy People)

Windows 98 for Busy People is the book for folks who don't want to be bogged down by minutiae. The authors explain just enough (through bulleted lists, expert advice, "fast forwards," and definitions) to show you how to negotiate Windows 98 quickly and with confidence. Windows 98 for Busy People also teaches readers how to do tasks well, ultimately saving time spent shuffling through programs and files. The book opens with a series of color pages marked "Blueprints for Windows 98." These starting pages provide a visual index to the entire book; the authors describe the blueprints as the "coming attractions" for all the information contained within the text. These captioned visual guides are sprinkled throughout the book as well. With its visually pleasing, user-friendly layout, Windows 98 for Busy People painlessly provides shortcuts and timesaving tips that new--as well as more experienced--users will appreciate. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Windows 98 for Busy People
There should be a special corner of Hades for publishers who foist such a piece of junk on the public. It consists of 318 separate sheets of (unnecessarily heavy and coated) paper which are brushed with glue on one edge, then slipped into the jacket. This is touted as a reference book. As such, it should last through several years of serious page flipping. No Way! It starts falling apart after several weeks, and you are left with 318 separate sheets of paper.

Excellent Reference Guide for Learning Windows 98
This book was easy to follow and more helpful than any expensive computer class! If I had a question, I check the index and was referred to the appropriate chapter - I always found an answer to my problem!!

I can't wait for the next book to come out!!

Great cover, contents disappointing
The clever and knowing subtitle, "The manual you should have received with Windows 98," combined with the good-looking and orderly layout, drew me to this book. It is clearly intended for the neophyte, and I bought it when I switched from Mac to Windows 98. Like many new users I was mystified - and frustrated - by various aspects of Windows and looked to the index for help on specifics. Nearly every time, this book failed to address my question. Now that I'm fairly competent this book is useful, but would not recommend for the Mac user new to Windows. The author has not adequately anticipated the most common new-user emergencies, and the "Troubleshooting" sections - that you turn to in a bit of a panic - are quite meager.

Glad I bought the book!
This book gave me the information I needed to get Windows 98 installed and everything setup and working the way I wanted it to work.

The documentation I recieved with my new system was lame -- besides I really feel I should have gotten a book like this with my system.

I'd looked at other titles and found them either too superficial and cartoony, or too overwhelming and expensive.

I like the author's writing style, and the book is organized well. I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a little help with Windows 98. Good price too.

Disapointed for the money spent!
For seventeen dollars I would have expected a lot more then a glorified version of the little Windows book that comes with a new computer. It's not a bad little book, just not worth the money in my opinion. The book is a mix of very very basic windows concepts explained at a higher user level. For example, page 67 tells us what the Address bar in Windows explorer is for. Now any user who cannot figure out what an address bar is for will not understand an explaination worded like this, "Show the name of the resourcethat is selected in the All Folders pane. Enter a path name or resource name to jump quickly to that disk, folder or resource." If you do not have enough PC knowledge to know what an Address bar is for, then you will have no idea what a "Resource" is or a "Path name". Neither of which are listed in the index, and there is no glossary. As computer teacher looking for a text book for a Windows 98 Basics class, I will not be using this one. Sorry Steve, you missed the mark.

Money well spent! Very good book for beginners like me.
Since I have this book and have used it frequently, recommended it to others and been very happy with the way it shows absolutely everything in pictures, I was surprised at Mr. Ianetto's negative review and I wanted to add my comments to be fair. Out of curiosity, I went to find Mr. Ianetto's problem with page 67 and saw that he pulled out a short caption next to a figure and then criticized it for not being a full explanation of something. But the caption occurs right below another paragraph that does use the term he refers to. I do agree that using "path name" without defining it wasn't helpful, but that was an usual instance. Mr. Ianetto looked hard for something to criticize because the rest of the book is very clear, especially for someone like me, who's just getting started with computers and doesn't have any background knowledge to rely on. I was also surprised that the previous reviewer took what seemed to me to be a nasty swipe at the author at the end of his review. That didn't help at all and made me suspect that the reviewer was maybe reveling in his own sophistication and maybe also relishing writing a negative review.

Little Black Book = Little Black Hole for your $
One of the most useless books I've seen; If you need the rudimentary information provided in this book, you probably shouldn't be tampering with XP in the first place.

Little Black Book = Concise Information
Apparently, others that have read this book would rather read hours upon hours of mindless drivel instead of finding useful information fast.

This book is extremely useful for locating step-by-step instructions on how to perform tasks in XP without wasting your time reading 10 pages with the instructions mixed in. It literally shows on one line what the objective is and then each step one after the other under the objective. It is well indexed.

Network administrators like myself do not have time to fiddle about with inane, cursory, meaningless information and need the information quickly and concisely. It does not mean we "do not need to be using XP" as another reviewer stated. It simply means we are very, very efficient and choose not to waste our employer's nor our clients' time sorting through a bunch of trash to get information.

The book is quite useful and if you are running XP, it would be a good reference to have.

A big disappointment
I've enjoyed other collections of Mr. Chiodo's works, and that's the problem.

This IS "other collections of Mr. Chiodo's works".

Old material from his website abounds, & far too much text is crammed in.
I suspect an additional collection was mandated by contract with his publisher, & this was the result.

Good commercial art
Ever since books of Frazetta's art were published in the '70s, everybody who is pretty good at cartoony/fantasy illustration gets a book of their stuff printed. It's like selling your portfolio, and a sign that you've "made it" to a certain level in your field. Joe Chiodo is good, especially at a certain kind of stylized girlie art that is real streamlined '50s style, with cool lava-lamp color combinations, similar to what Bill Wray is doing, and somewhat derived from Hanna-Barbera animation design of the '60s, and heavily influenced by Robert McGinness' crime detective femme fatale paperback book covers of the same era. The subject range in this book is not as great as on his website. Sometimes the girls' heads are too big. Is he any relation to the Chiodo brothers of "Killer Klown" fame? If you are into animation/motion picture design, you should take a look at your competition in this book. It's a fairly slim volumn, and it's not earthshaking (as Frazetta's work was) but the guy fills me with envy for his design ability.
