Broken PlanetReview Date: 2007-09-21
Earth is a broken planet. One thousand of Earth's finest minds must leave the dying embers of their planet behind to seek a new future for humankind. Most of the human refugees make a new home on Luna Base. A handful choose to join their alien brothers on Argo, one of three Foundation starships and set sail for the stars where they meet up with the enemy that destroyed Earth. Attempting to break the Drog blockade, Argo gets separated from her two sister ships. With communication down and a deviation from its programmed flight path, it's discovered that Argo is headed for a cosmic drain. Millions of years have passed since the mass of intense density last embraced anything larger than a few random atoms. With Argo in its web, its patience is about to be rewarded. Beyond the dying embers of Earth, beyond the deepest reaches of the galaxy, beyond the most vaulting of imagination, the handful of refugees, along with their alien brothers meet up with a strange entity at the very edge of the black hole's event horizon.
Broken Planet is a very worthy sequel to Footprints in the Dust, and like its predecessor it is fast paced and woven with real science. A strong and exciting tale that will leave you breathless. It has all the ingredients of good science fiction. Great concepts, unpredictability,, strong characterization, space battle and romance as the crew of Argo journey into the unknown.
Absorbing read!Review Date: 2007-07-21
Revolving on its axis, turning from west to east, should have resulted in day and night. But now there was only cold, eternal darkness. A world without seasons. A world without life. A broken planet ... So begins John Otto's eagerly awaited sequel to Footprints in the Dust.
Leaving uninhabitable Earth, the Foundation's starships, Argo, Orion and Vela, set off on a mission to find a planet that will sustain human life and once again meet up with their old enemy, the Drogs. Intent on becoming the masters of the cosmos, this supremely arrogant and cruel race is determined to learn the secrets of the genetically enhanced humans' longevity and engage them in battle. The Argo succeeds in breaking their blockade, but in doing so, is separated from its sister ships and seems destined to fall prey to a far worse fate when caught in the magnetic pull of a black hole.
John Otto's expertise in this genre shines through as he skilfully mingles fact with fiction and feeds the reader intriguing snippets of information about our galaxies. Poignant at times, liberally sprinkled with surprises, Broken Planet is an absorbing read.

Tripp and Amber-SPOILERSReview Date: 2003-10-23
Risking herself when she gets the wife beater arrested and Tripp angry with her for what she did.
Favorite scene with Tripp-
At the wedding and being condemned for something he didn't do.
Together-
At the
restaurant to make a good impression before being asked to attend a wedding.
What did you like about Amber-
She loved
Tripp for who he was, and only bettered him so that he would get a better chance in life. She was so down to earth and kind
to everyone.
What didn't you like about Amber-
She took risks, especially with the wife beater.
What did you like about
Tripp-
How much he cared about the kids in his clinic, and not the money or prestige.
What didn't you like about Tripp-
He
thought he could protect Amber by letting her go.

Tripp and Amber make a very interesting couple. In some ways they are complete opposites. She comes from a rich pampered lifestyle and is used to men falling all over her. Tripp's childhood was the complete opposite and he has had to struggle for most of his life. Men are always trying to seduce Amber, so it is a complete shock when she has to play the seductress to get Tripp's attention. Tripp and Amber are also alike in many ways. They are both educated, stubborn, strong-willed people. Both have big hearts and care a great deal for those less fortunate than them. Tripp and Amber give us not only a taste of romance, but comedy as well. The food fight in the Colton's immaculate dining room was hilarious.
The most fascinating thing in this book was that Rand and Emily finally meet face to face with the `real' Meredith. I cannot wait for the next book in the hope that Meredith finally gets to come home and reconnect with the rest of her family. If you have not read the previous books in the series than I encourage you to do so.

After all is said and done, was Raymond dreaming or did he in fact live his horror.
The Dark Side!Review Date: 2007-11-21
I was intrigued by the authors own words about this Short, a story based on a dream. Just the idea that he puts forth wondering why he would have such a dream as this drew me in. I had to read the story to see what he was talking about. Many things occur in this world, some funny, some sad, some good and some bad. Often, there are dark and mysterious happenings that go unnoticed by most of us as we busy in our own lives. Unnoticed, but happening nevertheless. Creepy thought huh?
I personally feel everyday we fight evil; perhaps we aren't aware that we are in a battle, but we are. In this story you will meet a man who entered this world with little hope and left it with none. In a storytelling form you will see that rejection and pain, if not dealt with, can open the door to an evil that you don't even want to know. Is this truth or just a writer's dream? You decide. Very good read of the darker side that like it or not, we all battle everyday, in one way or another. Well done!

Death Hawk RocksReview Date: 2008-10-24
From a Fertile imaginationReview Date: 2008-09-18
Along the way, the main character Death Hawk encounters treacherous hotties, back stabbing partners that were forced upon him, primitive and easily manipulated natives and not to mention an interstellar corporation that owns most of the known Galaxy.
Death Hawk is very similar to characters we all know. There are aspects of Kane, which shouldn't come as a surprise, but I found that he was also quite similar in mentality and personality with Jack Burton (Big trouble in little china).
We have a hero (sort of) that does his best, but quite often finds the tables turned on him and things don't go anywhere near as he had hoped or expected.
Hawk has a side kick / partner, a Symbiote named Cyke who is part wiseass, part encyclopaedia, mixed in with a few nifty abilities that help Hawk out of some rather dangerous predicaments.
Of course, after reading this book, you can see where Mark got some of his inspiration for things we've seen in Outlanders. First, Brigid. She's not named Baptiste in DH, but the physical similarities are there, although she's almost the polar opposite of our Baptiste. Second, we have the Tigers of Heaven, third this is where he originally introduced the ASP weapons.
Do I have to say it then? I better, because some people occasionally don't clue in. If you like Outlanders, you should enjoy Death Hawk.
Also, I would strongly recommend that you read the introduction by Douglas Clegg as well as the interview with Mark at the end. It will fill in some blanks for you, things that as I was reading the comic had me scratching my head in confusion, mainly background and the like.
I also noticed something else. Maybe it's just coincidence, maybe it isn't. I've currently read a series of novels by another author, and there is a character in that series named bob that has a very strong resemblance to Cyke. And said author is, from what I gather, a comic book fan, so it's very possible that Bob was modeled after him.
Or maybe just a coincidence. I don't know, but believe it or not, that's not a bad thing.
The art is pretty good. It wasn't rushed, nor was it slip shod like I've seen in a lot of current artists, nor and some might argue with me over this, were the women super endowed and hot beyond human measures like we see in so many comics. They were more realistic, which in some ways is hotter! Like Freya... a synthetic Amazon with a real attitude, and legs that just won't quit, and a rack bigger than Death Hawk's head. Then again, considering that she's 7 feet tall...
Sorry, got distracted there...
If you're a fan of the fantastic artist Adam Hughes, you'll be pleased to know that he did about half the art in the book. Darryl Banks, Rik Levins also contributed to the book, and did a wonderful job.
You can also thank Darryl Banks designing the cover, and Melissa Martin-Ellis for providing the color, as well as the layout.
So, bottom line is this. If you like Serenity, Firefly, Outlanders, stellar adventure with a mystery to boot, then you should give Death Hawk: The Soulworm Saga a read. It'll be worth not only your time, but your money.
