Great reference book
Worth the money to have this book by your side if you are running Win2k. This book is well organized and everything is explained very well.

Windows 2000 Instant Reference
This is the best Windows 2000 book that I have read! The author has packed this book from cover to cover with great things to maximize the use of this new operating system.

As a network integration company my employees are very much in need of a suitable and content rich guide to ease the transition into Windows 2000. I believe that the writing style of the author lends itself well to the technically savvy as well as computer newcomers and we will continue to recommend this book to our clients.

The instant reference is organized very intuitively and every page is something that I have run into or I know that my clients will run into in the future.

I hope to see more from where this came from!

Finally - complete coverage of 2000 Pro!
I have finally found a book that gives complete and practical coverage of this massive new OS. Most books on the subject don't seem nearly as practical. I especially liked the worksheets that were included on the CD-ROM. I am using those to help plan and implement W2K in my network. The Decision Trees are cool too. This book is well worth the price.

A comprehensive, well-written, and easy-to-use book
This Windows 2000 Professional On Site book provides you with plenty of step-by-step instructions on how to perform both intermediate and advanced tasks in Windows 2000. It is easy to follow, and provides insight on topics that are rarely documented. This is a must-have book for anyone managing Windows 2000 Professional.

I've read lots of books on Windows 2000 Server
I've read plenty of books on Windows 2000 Server, and this is one is my favorite. You can tell the author used to be a teacher because the explanations and walk-throughs are very thorough, decreasing the chances of making an error while performing tasks. I especially like the explanations on TCP/IP, Active Directory domains, DHCP, and DNS. Of course, these are basic pieces of 2000 Server, but Ms. Ballew details them nicely.
There are also an incredible amount of resouces on the CD that I've printed out and used in my migration from NT to 2000, and my Net Admins are appreciative for the good start and organizational options these offer.

If I had to choose one book to pick for upgrading to, migrating to, or installing a new Windows 2000 domain, I'd have to choose this one.

WOW!
Wow! This book has it all! I'd suggest this book for anyone who is upgrading to or using Windows 2000 Server on a network. For those who are upgrading, a complete guide for planning, installing, and managing, as well as setting new standards for inventory, security, and more. There's plenty of information on using DNS and DHCP too, as well as a chapter devoted to Routing and Remote Access.

On the CD, there's a hundred or so worksheets that can help you with the migration or upgrade, and plenty of web sites that you can access if you get in trouble with it. I'd say this book is a MUST HAVE for any Windows 2000 administrator.

Windows 2000 Web Applications Developer's Guide
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (01 May, 2000)
Author: Thomas Yager
Amazon base price: $54.99
Used price: $2.48

Written with both programmers and managers in mind, Windows 2000 Web Applications Developer's Guide tours the technologies, tools, and APIs required for creating state-of-the-art Web applications on the Windows platform. Filled with design tips and containing a good introduction to a half-dozen important APIs required to master Web programming, this book gives you what you need to know for successful multitiered development.

Instead of just repeating the "official" word from Microsoft, this book looks closely at the strengths and weaknesses of its platform. (For example, Yager argues that Windows NT 4.0 might be all you need. He also chooses to use JavaScript--instead of VBScript--for ASP development, and argues against relying too much on Visual InterDev's Design-Time Controls.) This independently minded perspective makes this text a worthy guide to building Web applications that work on all major browsers.

The book covers all the basic tools and APIs available in Windows for server-side development, including HTML, XML, JavaScript, COM+, and basic ASP and ADO programming. A standout here is the author's excellent suggestions for designing user interfaces (UIs) for browser-based clients. (Here, Yager walks through "traditional" stand-alone clients and shows how to implement UI features, such as menus and dialog boxes, within a browser.) Instead of complete programs, short code excerpts are used here. This book's introductions to XML and JavaScript are notably clear.

Mixing a high-level perspective on successful Web application design with a full tour of the basic APIs that are needed to get started, this title has something for both developers and managers who are faced with architecting Web solutions for the Windows platform. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Overview of Web applications in Windows 2000, Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, virtual directories and sites, planning for Web applications, three-tier and n-tier architectures, workstations for Web developers, staging and production servers, designing user interfaces for traditional clients and Web applications, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, database tutorial quick-start, introduction to Visual InterDev (VI) 6.0, VI design-time controls (DTCs), basic HTML tutorial, forms, cascading style sheets (CSS), JavaScript, the Document Object Model (DOM), Dynamic HTML (DHTML), XML and XSL, COM and COM+, ASP tutorial with JavaScript, SQL syntax primer, ADO basics, using transactions and events in COM+, message queuing and queued components, quick reference for JavaScript, HTML, DOM and ASP.

A tremendous wealth of Knowledge!!!
I got this book expecting that it would just sit on my shelf most of the time. I'm a DBA, not a developer, and was really just getting this so I would have it to thumb through every now and then. When I opened it, I started looking through some of the chapters, and couldn't put it down. I read 5 chapters that first night, and went back again and again. The author clearly knows this technology, and has a very relaxed, smooth style. He also has a very educated sense of humor that reminds me a bit of Dennis Miller. You will not be bored reading this book. I was also impressed with the level of depth he was able to reach in a book that was supposed to only survey the material. I found myself sitting at my server with the book in my lap trying the things in each chapter. I have a basic knowledge of a lot of the technologies in this book, but I had no idea how much I didn't know. This isn't the only book you'll need to finish a project, but even if you've been developing for years, you'll learn quite a bit that you never thought possible. The reference sections in the back are incredible too. Very complete.

I really enjoyed the section on DHTML, and XML. I have been writing with DHTML for quite some time, and it's one of those things I just memorized, but this book actually explains so many things, I find myself going back over my own code and actually understanding why I had to do things the way I did. Don't even get me started on the JavaScript section. Is there anything this guy doesn't know? My only real complaint is that the publishers didn't contract him for a sequel. This is a book that could easily be split into 2-3 different volumes, and I firmly believe that the author could more than fill them up. Trust me, he is a true master of his craft, and even if you're old-hat at most of this, you will still learn enough to make the cost of this book worth your while. Tom Yager really went out of his way on this one, and he really understands what people need/want in a book on web development. I sincerely hope he writes another.

A Great General Overview of Current Microsoft Technologies
This book is targeted at a technical person, who doesn't have extensive exposure to Microsoft Technologies. As a software architect coming from a Unix/C++ & NT/Java background, this book gave me enough background to feel confident in building architectural prototypes using Microsoft Technologies.

The flow of the book is very good, transitioning from major section to section with little difficulty. This book is not a reference book on any of the technologies mentioned on the cover! It is a great overview of each topic and how they inter-relate.

The downside of this book is that it doesn't go into enough detail in some areas. To actually begin implementing some of the ideas, you need another teaching aid to learn the Microsoft Tool in question. Fortunately, the book offers pointers to good references on each of the tools described.

All in all this book was a very thorough, easy read giving a great overview of the current state of the art in Microsoft System Architecture.

Fixed 3 problems the first afternoon. Well worth the money.
As a newby to Windows, I blindly used Windows 95 as I learned about the Windows platform. As the weeks passed, so did the quality of the performance of my programs. My CD-ROM was no longer available, my desk top lost things around the edges, and then when I tried to load a free software package from an Internet Service Provider, and had to abort the load, I lost 8 drivers and the platform no longer wanted to load. It was clearly time to stop putting up with this deterioration and start fixing things. A couple of guru's were of no help with the ROM so I took the advice of one and bought this book. I am now well on my way to total recovery and am deeply grateful to Kay Nelson for taking the time to write all of this down for those of us that flounder when encountering the Great God, Windows 95, Ruler of My PC, whether I like it or not. I now feel that I am starting to regain my rightful control of my computer, for the first time in about 8 weeks. I am not used to an operating system that tells me I am not allowed to load things into my computer, even if it is probably good advice. And I will have trouble adjusting to the new world of missing and modified DOS commands. And with Kay's help, I may soon be able to guess where my old and friendly app's programs might have put the file we just created. Yes, Windows 95 has truly been driving me crazy for about 8 weeks, but I am now feeling better, since help has arrived.

A great resource for folks moving to Windows 95

As a new user of Windows 95 (but veteran Windows 3.x user), I was looking for a book that would help me appreciate how it works--but I didn't need hand-holding. None impressed me, so I started using the product anyway. I was immediately struck by several unintuitive and challenging quirks. I also started to see work-arounds that left me wondering why the designers hadn't thought of the same things I had (like default "send to" entries for the Start menu and Desktop). Anyway, I then happened upon this book and felt an immediate rush of comfort and solace, reading of another's similar discoveries and shared solutions. Being confident that I'd barely scratched the surface of such challenges, and wanting to be able to solve them quickly when I did encounter them, I bought this book. I'm happy I did. If you're a Windows 3.x, Mac, or OS/2 user converting to Windows 95, I think you'll find it very helpful too!

Great for the newbie.
The perfect "help book" for those who are not computer technicians! Every page is in FULL COLOR and is set up for a 3-D VISUAL approach to learning. It is the winner of the Eleventh Annual Computer Press Awards and an international best seller!

I purchased it for my workplace (in a hospital). My co-workers and I use it very often!

Great for beginners, or for a basic Windows '95 reference!
"Windows '95 Simplified" provides screen shots, and clear markings, detailing every step necessary to accomplish certain tasks. "Windows '95 Simplified" will take you from beginner to intermediate because it goes into more depth than the usual "this is a mouse, this is a window" type book.

Using what's built into Windows '95 you'll learn the basics, how to use Wordpad, Windows Paint, copy/arrange/rename/etc files and folders, fax and e-mail with Microsoft Exchange, format a disk, and a couple other tasks.

The Easy Way to Learn Windows 98 !
Super 270 page book that takes you step by step through the process of learning and using Windows 98. I found most everything I needed to know to get me started, and much more. It features a very complete table of contents and index to help you quickly find the info you want, then presents the info in an easy to understand manner, without the technical jargon the "experts" use. Topics range from Bare Bones Basics, Fixing Problems and Understanding Windows and Menus, to Printing Files, Sharing Information, Changing Settings and Finding Help When an Error Message Appears On Your Screen (An aid that I use often). This volume contains more data than some of the much more expensive videos and books I've seen, and its even easier to use. A free CD-Rom is included to help you. I refer to the book often. Well worth the price.

Review of "Dummies 101, Windows 98"
If you want to start computing and you are really at ground zero--my exact scenario, I'm afraid--this is your bible! This book assumes you know nothing--my exact scenario, I'm afraid--and gets you going painlessly and with humor. It comes with a cd to download for on-screen, hands-on lessons; what more could you ask for? NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH "WINDOWS 98 FOR DUMMIES," this book, "Dummies 101,Windows 98" is the place for you to start if "Windows 98 for Dummies" was over your head--my exact scenario, I'm afraid. Of course now I'm a whiz, but this book got me started and I'm sending copies to friends in need this X-Mas.

A good book, delivers what it promises.
This might not be the best book on Windows programming out there, but I gave it 5 stars because it lives up to its promises (mostly).

I have two main complaints, however: (1) "Windows 98" is a misnomer, since the book is really about Windows programming for any version. (2) The authors supposedly tell you how to "make the best use" of MFC, but they mostly try to avoid MFC as far as they can, even if it seems more appropriate. (3) I was surprised to see no treatment of DirectX in the whole PART devoted to graphics programming...

Still, the book is informative, and covers broad terrirotry (though in shallow detail at times). The CD-ROM contains all the source code - ALL of it works! In fact, the compiled versions are on the CD-ROM too.

An excellent reference source.
Excellent source of reference for the Win32 API and MFC and how to apply them in developing applications for Windows.

Windows 98 Made Easy
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Companies (05 June, 1998)
Authors: Thomas Sheldon, Dan Logan, and Tom Sheldon
Amazon base price: $24.99
Used price: $0.79
Buy one from zShops for: $3.99
Windows 98 Made Easy begins with a visual tour of the operating system's offerings, clarifying everything from individual applications to the Network Neighborhood. The authors explain that this show-and-tell is "a good chapter to read if you are on a flight or taking a commuter train to work." After providing this useful overview, Sheldon and Logan launch into the more hands-on learning approach that frames the rest of the book.

Even though the book does make easy the exploration of Windows 98, it is not strictly a beginner's guide. Instead it's better suited for a user who feels comfortable with the Windows operating system but wants numbered instructions (complete with screen shots) on how to get specific tasks accomplished. An example of the range of topics Windows 98 Made Easy addresses can be found within the section on Internet Explorer. The authors not only discuss basic Web browsing but also describe multimedia options, security features, and Web-page publishing with FrontPage Express. For a user familiar with Windows but wanting a slightly more in-depth read, Windows 98 Made Easy will serve as both tutorial and, later, reference guide. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Average review score:

A computer book both thorough AND comprehensible.
Many books on computers are either insulting to one's intelligence or, at the other extreme, full of techno-babble. This book is written in the middle ground. It is clear, thorough, and concise. The authors anticipate your questions and answer them all in a step-by-step progression. As an avowed sufferer of techno-phobia, I HIGHLY recommend it. It will cure you of your worst computer fears.

Marvelous tool for someone who has little computer knowledge
