Changed my life
I have been looking for a copy of this book for ages. I thought that my friends and I were the only people in the world who had discovered it. I am so glad to know that other people have enjoyed it as much as I have. I read this book for the first time around 8 or 9 years ago, and it remains my absolute favorite book. Desiree inspired me to be a writer. Ms. Forshay-Lunsford if you are by chance reading this, you changed my life. Desiree and Billy remain two of my best friends. Anyone wishing to compare notes on this book or simply discuss it e-mail me at jlennon@oio.net

This was written from her heart and touched mine
I found this book when I was sixteen, having seen the same life that Desiree spoke of (although I was younger than her). For years I have wanted to find another person who has read this book, because it hit home so hard. My "Billy" was Jim...I sometimes wonder where he is today. My best friend, Trishee, was Violet...she was killed three years ago in a drunk driving accident and it makes it all that more important for me to have this book close to my heart. I always wanted her to read it, to see the resemblance in our families. If there is anyone who knows of how to get it, I would love to read it again. It's so good to know that there are others out there who have gone through what I lived through and Ms. Forshay-Lundsford.
I'm 25 now, a college graduate, newly married, and hoping to start a family...but I was once that lost girl looking for something and found it in my "family".

The best book BAR NONE!
I have the same experience as every other person who has reviewed this book. I first read it when I was 13 and living a life similar to Desiree. I cried my eyes out when I read the book, and then re-read it thousands of times. It is a book that teaches you about the importance of friendship and loyalty. It is also a book that tells you that you are not alone out there.

If you've ever installed Windows 95, reinstalled Windows 95, wished you had never installed Windows 95, or are stalled just at the thought of Windows 95, you need this book on your shelf. Windows 95 Secrets, Fourth Edition, is the kind of reference book that operating systems should ship with. Since it may be awhile until that day comes, it's good to know that someone is publishing the information.

The authors fill each chapter with plenty of tips and tricks that range from the cosmetic to the utilitarian. You'll discover how to configure every facet of the Windows 95 interface, including those New Age startup and shutdown graphics. You'll also learn many keystroke and mouse tricks to zipping around the desktop and browsing the hard drive more efficiently.

This book brings the hazy world of the Registry to light with clear guides to editing and managing the files. Windows 95 Secrets lists and explains the available Windows 95 upgrades, expansion packs, and "unofficial" utilities, such as Power Toys, right up front, so you can make sure you're running the latest version with all of the coolest and most useful gadgets.

Previews of Internet Explorer 4.0 shell integration features pepper the entire volume. Windows 95 Secrets also reports on the functionality you can expect when the operating system and the Web browser collide. However, the author marks the juiciest tidbits with icons that indicate tips, undocumented features, and secrets. These tidbits are excellent skimming aids if you want to go straight to the good stuff.

This is the one Computer Book, you won't regret purchasing!
I received my copy of Windows 95 Secrets 4th Edition a couple of weeks back, and already I'm seeing the benefits. Brian Livingston & Davis Straub get really detailed in this edition. My colleagues and I feel like there isn't a part of Windows 95 that we don't know about! If this is the one computer book you ever buy, you definitely won't regret it

Number 1 in my Library!
This excellent reference manual has become an indispensable corner stone of my computer library. Well written in clear and concise English the book is full of tips and tricks -- many of them undocumented by Microsoft. "Windows 95 Secrets" has helped me through a number of problematic situations including ones having to do with Network, modem, fax and printer setup and trouble shooting. If you are considering the purchase of only one Windows 95 reference book: this is the one.

Excellent resource.
This was a great book - if I had just one book about Win 95, this would be it.

Excellent Resource
So many times you pick up a title like this and as you read, you get the feeling that the authors first exposure to the material was as they were writing the book. Complete opposite feeling as you read this title. The material is presented in a knowledgeable, accurate way, with hints, tips and watch-outs thrown in that only someone who has worked with the product would know about.

The author has extended a considerable amount of information on: -- Group Policy Objects, from in-depth explanation to interacting and troubleshooting; -- IntelliMirror, including interaction with Group Policy Objects and client configurations to software deployment using MSI and ZAP files; -- Working with down-level clients (NT / 9x); and more.

There is a chapter in the book on Remote Installation Services, which will introduce you to the technology, but is light on content and a little beyond the scope of the book. Despite this, it is still informative and in no way detractive from the remaining content.

This is a title that you could pickup, read, and upon completion feel very confident in your ability to manage and implement Group Policies and work with IntelliMirror; an excellent addition for any administrator's Windows 2000 library.

Great Book
Some books I have read will put you to sleep when talking about Group Policy. Not this one!! The author has a way of making everything clear as well as keeping your interest. Highly recommend this book to anyone who deals with Group Policy and Windows 2000.

Read it to really understand GP
An excellent book that teaches group plocy from the ground up, and well into the advanced levels. I especially like end of chapter summeries of tips and practices to avoid the pitfalls of Group Policy hell.

The world of the Dark Crystal
I found this book to be one of the most interesting books I have ever read. Brian Froud creates a detailed explanation of everything from the world of the dark crystal. The illustrations are beautiful, Froud shows such a clear picture that I felt like I was realy there. The World of the Dark Crystal has always fascinated me and Frouds book explains in detail everything i wanted to know about this mistical world af amazing creatures. It is a book i will cherish forever.

A MUST for any fan of the Dark Crystal
"When single shines the triple sun..." Who could forget that ancient prophesy written on the wall of the ancient gelfling village? Bieng a historical account of the world of the Dark Crystal, this book is as hard to categorize as the movie that spawned it. Once again Brian Froud's artwork takes the reader into another world. Based upon the the "Book of Aughra" and told from the viewpoint of an archeologist finding an ancient manuscript, it describes the world of the Dark Crystal in exquisite detail with diagrams and artwork by Froud.. For anyone who has ever seen the movie and loved it as much as I did, this is a book that every fan must have.

A rare beauty
I just happen to own the original 1985 copy of The Dark Crystal. To be honest I never knew it's value for content and that it went right out of print. I would say if you appreciate Brian Froud or if you are a collector, I would snatch up this book for it's Brian Foud artwork and it ability to only be in print a short time the second time around too

Just about everything I wanted to know...
This book pretty much covers everything I needed to know about Win32 system programming. It has very good coverage of topics like threading, file handling, Memory Management, Interprocess communication, network programming, and asynchronous I/O with completion ports. Ever wonder how to share memory or access really, really huge files? Want to learn how to build more scalable servers? This book covers all that and more. I recently took a new job that uses all of this stuff and I was relieved to find a book that covered it all so well.

He gives a very good generalized view of the windows programming philosophy and explains some common windows types and their uses, which helps in understanding the rest of the API. There are plenty of programming examples and he often compares Win32 programming techniques to UNIX programming techniques giving references to the Stevens book which will help put things in context for UNIX programmers.

For client side programming you can get by with Petzold but for server side this book is a must. If you do system development on Win32 then this book is your weapon.

Should get any experienced programmer started
This book, together with the reference documentation, should get any programmer started with Win32 system programming. There are plenty of comparisons with Unix and this can be very useful for anyone with that background. It is up to date and covers Windows 2000 and give you hints how to prepare for Win64. Especially it covers asynchronous I/O and threads in a good way. The last chapter gives an overview of RPC and COM, but anyone really interested in this probably needs another book.

A smooth transition from Unix to Win32
I recommend this the book to all experienced programmers interested in learning the Win32 API. It covers all the core system services that you need to learn first. If you need to tackle the GUI you can try 'Programming Windows' by Petzold. Of course I'd suggest that you go the .NET route or get a good toolkit (not MFC) instead. If you want to move on to more advanced Win32 programming try 'Programming Applications for Microsoft Windows' (if you can find a copy). To get into deeper system programming, you'll have to move on to the Undocumented/Native API books.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant

Author: William R. Stanek

One of the best Windows 2000 references yet published, Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is a professional-level how-to guide for all versions of Windows 2000. Designed with the mobile expert in mind, the cover of the book has a tough, plastic-coated surface (like that of a playing card) and rounded corners (though it won't quite lie flat without weights). Its contents are similarly hard-boiled. Concepts are explained in expertly written and carefully organized prose, while succinct procedures tell you how to meet requirements and numerous tables list options and their effects. There aren't many screen shots, but that's okay because this is a reference for people who don't need them.

Coverage is wide-ranging and includes everything a power user or system administrator would want to know about the configuration, expansion, and efficient administration of Windows 2000 systems and networks. If you're not sure how to best go about an incremental backup or the installation of a Domain Name Service (DNS) server under Windows 2000, you'll find what you need here. If you know a bit about Windows NT (or even Unix) in a networking context, you can extract all you need to know about Windows 2000's unique operational features. Similarly--even though it wasn't designed for the purpose--this book makes a great study aid for the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) tests on Windows 2000. --David Wall

Topics covered: Administration of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Server editions, including network setup and configuration, users, groups, Active Directory, file systems, disk shares, RAID arrays, data backup and recovery, print shares, TCP/IP, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), and DNS.

Average review score:

Serves its purpose well.
Don't expect to learn Windows 2000 by reading this book cover to cover. It's not really designed for that. It is better used as a reference guide for commonly performed system tasks. In that regard, it serves its purpose quite nicely providing solid organization and simple advice.

This book serves a definite purpose. It's designed to be the book on the shelf that you use when the inevitable "How Do I Do This?" question pops up. It fulfill this purpose well. What this book is not designed for is to fully explain the features of Windows 2000 and Active Directory. There are other titles that do a much better job of that.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrators Pocket Consultant
Clear. Concise. Informative. Encyclopedic in scope. This book is not designed to teach you Win2K. It is designed to serve as a reference checklist for most common, and not so common procedural tasks that occur on a day-to-day basis.

While I own an ever expanding library on Win2K, I find that this is the book that always resides in my ready bag, so as to be available where I travel. Mr. Stanek has done a marvelous job with this book. I highly recommend it.

2nd edition even better than first
I have the first edition and got the second edition immediaetly. With the second edition, Stanek has done a great job! This book is well written, easy to follow and concise, yet packed with lot's of useful information and hints and tips for Windows 2000. I consider myself a fairly expert Windows admin, but still learned quite a lot from this book. Like other Windows books that Stanek has written, this one is excellent for either new admins or experienced admins. I whole heartedly recommend this book to everyone.

This book is going to make Frank Frazetta fans very, very happy. Icon: A Retrospective by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art Frank Frazetta is a comprehensive look at the work of one of the world's most influential fantasy artists. Frazetta's entire career is covered, from his earliest work on L'il Abner to his unused poster art for Quentin Tarantino's From Dusk Till Dawn; from his powerful interpretations of Robert E. Howard's Conan character to his whimsical Hollywood parodies. More than a hundred full color prints of Frazetta's most representative work are collected here in a single handsome edition, along with photographs of the artist and his studio, quotes, and testimonial biography.

The subject matter of Frazetta's work is familiar--brawny warriors, buxom enchantresses, and terrifying monsters--but he manages to infuse them with a rare charisma. His figures are sublime, at once naturalistic and hyper-real, and his vivid use of colors startles the eye again and again. Incredibly, this collection manages to do justice to his decades of award-winning work. Icon is a must for the serious Frazetta enthusiast. --Brendan J. LaSalle

Average review score:

Fantasy Art that is absolutely stunning!
I am a collector of SiFi-Fantasy art. I will state categorically, Frank Frazetta is the finest Fantasy/SiFi illustrator that has ever lived, bar none! Unlike modern artists, who work with air brush, Frazetta's best work is done in oils. The quality of his oil paintings are on a par with the great masters and deserve to be hung next to the likes Rembrandt van Rijn. His compositions are always emotionally stimulating, intriguing, and beautiful. Frazetta has the unique talent to tell a fantastic story with a paint brush. This wonderful book has reproduced some of Frazetta's finest work with meticulous care. The color plates are crisp and vibrant. They will captivate your imagination with their incredible beauty. This is one of those Frazetta collections that will soar in value once it is out of print. Take my advice. Buy it now!

frazetta's ICON a must for any serious fan of great fantasy
any lover of great fantasy art will be thrilled by this collection of paintings by the grand master, Frank Frazetta. Simply a genius with a brush or pencil, this book includes all his great works, wonderfully reproduced!!!

How to improve on the original
My last review was much too long. Here's a new take: how do you improve on something as beautiful as the original Icon? Simple. Add more art, and more pages. Fill the pages from one corner to the next with more art. Put it in a sturdy softcover binding and charge less for more. If you don't know who Frank Frazetta is this is your chance to discover a master artist. Add some dazzling images and powerful designs to your bookshelf by buying this book. His work is provacative, emotional, and has an uncompromising impact on those who view it. From the primal strength of his Conan paintings to the erotic beauty of his defiant women, it's the vitality of his art that makes it distinctive.Discover Frank Frazetta with this new book.Rediscover his incredible range if all you have are his old books from the seventies.

Too much glorifying of USMC
The book describes the Marine Corps values and culture very well. Hence, the book deserves its 3 stars for the fascinating read of the USMC's way. It doesn't get 4-5 stars from me because the USMC's way is not always applicable in the businessworld. Furthermore, the book tends to glorfiy the USMC. I am sure USMC has many good thing to learn from, but I also know it is well known for its brutality. Despite what the USMC says, the marines routinely chastise, tease, and beat those who are 1)gay or act gay 2)has a obsessively macho culture 3)tolerates Marines coddling prostitutes. In other words, there are few things about USMC no businesses should practice.

Achieve Success the Marine Corps Way
When our national survival is at stake, or when we send America's sons and daughters to stare death in the face in defense of our national interests, inspired leadership is critical to success. Fortunately, the United States military continually develops people who are up to the challenge of leading others to achieve our national security objectives. Foremost in developing military leaders at all organizational levels is the United States Marine Corps.

Rarely do corporations risk the lives of their employees to accomplish their missions; however, in the highly competitive global market place, "enemies" are always looking for ways to eliminate their competition. As with achieving national security objectives, strong and effective leadership can mean the difference between success or failure in the business world.

In Semper Fi, Business Leadership the Marine Corps Way authors Dan Carrison and Rod Walsh, both Marines (no longer on active duty), brilliantly bring the leadership principles that have made Marines and won battles since 1775 to the competitive environment of corporate America. They do this by examining the methodology the Corps applies to develop its leaders and transforming the Marine's concepts to strategies that can be used to lead any organization. The authors guide you through successive levels of responsibility and leadership from recruiting to senior management.

Semper Fi is required reading for all those who desire to be a better leader. Carrison and Walsh inspire you to achieve your leadership potential as they provide you a road-map to success in the business world. After reading their book, you will have greater respect and admiration for the Marine Corps and will be better prepared to tackle the challenges of corporate life. You will refer to this book over and over again as you lead your organization to new heights of achievement and climb the ladder of corporate success.

Debugging Windows Programs: Strategies, Tools, and Techniques for Visual C++ Programmers

Debugging Windows Programs: Strategies, Tools, and Techniques for Visual C++ Programmers sounds like it might focus on using a debugger exclusively, but this book is actually a wide-ranging tour of how to write better, more robust Visual C++ code that can be debugged more easily. Mixing plenty of nuts-and-bolts tips with higher-level strategies for effective testing, Debugging Windows Programs offers plenty of valuable expertise for any working C++ programmer.

The focus is on providing practical tips for more successful debugging, but many of the suggestions are for tweaking the way in which you write C++ code. Early sections examine how to take full advantage of assert statements (whether in C, MFC, or custom functions), which can be used to write safer code; trace statements, which are used to log debug messages, are covered, too. (Chances are that you haven't seen all of the APIs; luckily, they're rounded up for you here.) There are also numerous tips about C++ style, like how to choose readable variable names, along with the debugging dos and don'ts of working with errors, exceptions, COM objects, and threads.

Chances are, even if you are an experienced Visual C++ programmer, you'll learn something useful about how to get more out of the C++ debugger from the last sections of this book. From the right compiler and linker switches (which can be mysterious) to how to customize watch variables by tweaking the configuration files in C++, you'll learn how to be more productive with this tool. The text concludes with another useful section, an FAQ-style listing of dozens of common debugging questions and answers.

Although it's highly practical, the book also recommends thinking about your code, applying strategies for each aspect of debugging features consistently and effectively. The bottom line is that you not only will find bugs in present code, but also you'll design code that's easier to test and debug in the future. In all, Debugging Windows Programs delivers a good mix of practical tips and strategies that'll help C++ programmers create more robust (and testable) code. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered:

Rich with Information and Well Written
Writing versatile C++ is serious business. Moreover, the added complexity of Win32, MFC and ATL make debugging a challenging task. Simple techniques such as use of TRACE() statements and Watch facilities alleviates minor problems. While there are several authoritative texts on C++ and VC++, the same cannot be said for debugging techniques. This book rounds out the library of serious VC++ developers nicely. It is an absolutely amazing text. It's scholarly yet approachable. Moreover, as someone with an extensive library (including C++ and Win32 etc.), I can attest that there is nonetheless "new" information presented to me that is quite useful. The beginning of the text addresses philosophical issues in helping prevent bugs. The next section gives great guidance in actually using the debug facilities of Visual Studio most thoroughly. The last section covers issues specific to COM and multithreading. This text has a wealth of useful information. There is a good introduction to the Intel instruction set and use of MAP files for postmortem debugging. (I wish there were a text of the same caliber that covers use of and debugging Intel's MMX.) This book will definitely help users (beginner or expert) achieve a higher plane(42).

An invaluable book ¿ packed with immediately useful macros
The vast majority of recommendations are so simple, yet so effective. Even if you only read random sections of this book, it will be of immediate benefit. This book in conjunction with John Robbin's book (Debugging Applications) are invaluable in not just giving you tips on how to find bugs but much more importantly how to code defensively to reduce the chances of bugs occurring in the first place.

As the authors mention in the preface, they are not many original ideas in the book - but it is a good consolation of publicly available information. The book adds value by explaining when to use certain techniques and when to use others e.g. Chapter 5 -Using exceptions vs. return values.

Because the book is specifically geared to C++ programmers there are some fantastic macros. For instance _CoCreateServer which wraps CoCreateInstance but gives detailed error information if anything goes wrong. Chapter 9 - Debugging Memory was particularly useful. Being able to detect leaking memory in ATL components (just like MFC does) was worth the price of the book alone.

My only criticism is the use of the Arial font which makes the book a little getting used to seeing on the printed page.

Pays for itself within your first project
I wish I had this book before - only discovered it recently. This book pays for itself within your first project. Surgical precision-like debugging. Wealth of information. I hope they are working on a sequel to this book for .Net development.

Although Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is justifiably famous as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, that uprooted Englishman was not his only popular hero. Burroughs's first sale (in 1912) was A Princess of Mars, opening the floodgates to one of the must successful--and prolific--literary careers in history. This is a wonderful scientific romance that perhaps can be best described as early science fiction melded with an epic dose of romantic adventure. A Princess of Mars is the first adventure of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who unexpectedly find himself transplanted to the planet Mars. Yet this red planet is far more than a dusty, barren place; it's a fantasy world populated with giant green barbarians, beautiful maidens in distress, and weird flora and monstrous fauna the likes of which could only exist in the author's boundless imagination. Sheer escapism of the tallest order, the Martian novels are perfect entertainment for those who find Tarzan's fantastic adventures aren't, well, fantastic enough. Although this novel can stand alone, there are a total of 11 volumes in this classic series of otherworldly, swashbuckling adventure. --Stanley Wiater

    The First in the Series
I first ran across Burroughs when I was about 11 or 12, back in
about '70. I think now it is the perfect age to encounter Burroughs, who is a workman-like but not stylish writer. He certainly knows how to tell an imaginative tale, that's for sure. But I think that for most people, if you read him too late, the magic isn't there. But at ll? All I can say: wow! The guy had an imagination. Great white Martian apes, red men and green men, sword battles, a dying planet...oh, it was good stuff! The first books in the series are the best; my favorite (because it's the first one I read) is "A Fighting Man of Mars," which was the fourth one. Still, they're all pretty good reads, but if you're going to read them, start with this one.

    Not just for guys!
Princess of Mars is a fantastic, wild ride. I think everyone makes a mistake though of saying it's just a guys book. I'm a woman, and it was my mother who recommended Princess to me! I think any girl who's interested in science fiction or fantasy would really enjoy this book. Yeah, it was obviously written with adolescent boys in mind but I think anyone can enjoy this wildly imaginative page turner.

The characters are all extremely likable. John Carter is the perfect southern gentleman. Honorable, loyal, incredibly brave, respectful to women, extremely handsome; a perfect hero who is never boorish or conceited. Then there's Sola, one of the few green Martians to show compassion and kindness, and Tars Tarkas(aren't these names so cool?)a ferocious green martian warrior with a tragic past who is also able to feel compassion and love. And I dare anybody to tell me that they wouldn't want a Woola of their very own! Dejah Thoris though is mainly for the guys. Carter's love and devotion for her was really sweet. I didn't even know that this was part of a book series until I read it on amazon and now I am really eager to read the other books of the series. And wasn't the end cool? I don't think I've ever read an ending quite like that before. What Carter found in the cave at the end was very creepy and intriguing. (I won't give out a spoiler)

Although this is pulp fiction and sort of like a comic book in a way,(I can see mothers in 1912 scolding their kids, "That Edgar Rice Burroughs is going to rot your mind if you keep reading it!") it's still light science fiction at it's best! (I'll warn you right off though, please don't expect something deep and complex like Dune or Darkover and post a review whining about it. Princess is purely for fun.) And am I the only one that thinks Princess would make a really awesome movie?

    Imagination & Adventure!--WOW!..A must read!
You want imagination?..adventure?..a few dabs of science(remember it was written in 1912)?..an ageless hero?..an absolutely beautiful damsel in distress?..a whole new world?..with a language all it's own?..inhabited with strange new creatures?.. friends and foes?..battles royal?..This book, and all 10 or 11 sequels, have it all! ER Burroughs was the early master of science fiction, adventure, and imagination; a man ahead of his time, and he gives the reader a roller-coaster ride of incredible adventures. Join with us now as John Carter meets, rescues, and captures the heart of the INCOMPARABLE Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars!, and eventually, along with his friend Tars Tarkas, follows suit with the entire red planet, Barsoom to its wild and whacky inhabitants.

Is this intellectual literature?..of course not. Is it non-stop fun and enjoyment, the original page-turner novel?...You bet it is! Pick this book up, start reading, and I guarantee: you won't put it down until you're finished!..and then you'll run out the door and be hunting for the 2nd book in the series, The Gods of Mars, and then # 3, The Warlord of Mars, and on through the series. Be warned: make sure you have access to #'s 2 and 3 before you start The Princess...you'll be sorry if you don't!

I first read the Burroughs Martian novels(there were 10 known to me then) as a graduate student studying Physics, some 40 years ago. They provided the perfect escape from the rigors of courses like Quantum Mechanics and E & M. Now I reread them, and I continue to enjoy. You will too.
