Sydney started out as a landing place for convicts from Great Britain. But from those humble beginnings, it has grown into one of the world's great cities. This is a "must read" for anyone planning a trip Down Under any time soon. The insights provided by the author will help the Australian visitor have a much better understanding of the city before him. With the Olympics coming soon to Sydney, the timing of this release couldn't have been better. This is a book worth the investment of time and money. You'll enjoy it.

After the Ball

Review Date: 2008-08-06
Breda Sullivan's poetry is much praised for its quality of delving deeply into human experience with a spare, exacting grace. A quiet unobtrusive voice which nonetheless makes its point clearly, 'The poems of Breda Sullivan are a revelation ... They ring perfectly true and clear; they are simple but well-wrought and linger long and profoundly in the mind. They do not say too much - clutter is the ruin of elegance. Ars est celare artem - true art is to conceal art!' - Gabriel Rosenstock, Poetry Supplement, Education Today

Winner of the 1998 National Women's Poetry Competition, the Edgeworth Prize and Balbriggan Writers' Group 'Tribute to Lil' Poetry Competition, Breda Sullivan's other awards include Syllables, Hopkins, Boyle Arts Festival, Figments, KISS, Mohill Arts Festival and Clogh Writers' Group Poetry Competitions. She was also a prizewinner in the Athlone River Festival, South Tipperary Literary Festival, Cootehill, Allingham, Dun Laoghaire Libraries and the Scottish International Poetry competitions. A member of Granard Writers' Group and co-founder of the Edgeworth Literary Weekend. Born in Athlone she lives near Streete on the Longford/Westmeath border with her husband and family. This is her second collection; A Smell of Camphor was published by Salmon in 1992.

Toibin examines Sean O'Casey's early literary life in context with the historical figures around him- Lady Gregory and W.B. Yeats. Particularly, the consternation surrounding Sean's controversial PLOUGH AND THE STARS and the defence Yeats and Gregory showered on him. A hugely enjoyable play.

Should Be Seen...but reading it is the next best thing

I've lived in Dublin for four months now, and seen a few plays in my time here. The best by far was Toibin's Beauty in a Broken Place, performed at the Peacock Theatre on Abbey Street.
I learned more about theatre, Irish history and culture, and the artistic spirit in the two and a half hours I spent watching this play than in the countless classes I've attended here. This is a wildly interpretive and yet heartreakingly simple and true retelling of the bonds between famed Irish playwrights William Butler Yeats, Sean O'Casey, and Lady Gregory, set against the backdrop of the Irish uprisings and the opening of O'Casey's controversial play (another must-read,) The Plough and the Stars.
I cannot recommend this play highly enough. Read it, go and see it, absorb it...I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

This book is a must for collectors of ridiculous propaganda and general oddities. Great for the coffee table, or for reading on the bus if you don't want the person next to you to try to talk to you. I especially enjoyed the part about the legal rights of the deceased future frozen. Totally five stars for camp value.

"Cryonics: Reaching for Tomorrow" is necessary reading for anyone considering cryonic suspension as an alternative to the traditional "burn or bury" method of dealing with the dead. Though cryonics is by no means a proven technology (with no successful re-animations at this point), at the very least, it holds a possibility of extended life in the future. This concept was once regarded as science fiction or pseudo-science...but then again so was cloning. If you read this book, you will undoubtedly see the plausibility of cryonic suspension, and will perhaps think twice about how much you truly value your own life.

An editorial point-- this book should be listed with two authors: Michael Darwin and Brian Wowk.

I read this book after delving into "home yoga" for about 3 months. As is probably common, I was doing many of the poses only semi-correctly. There is a lot of reading to be done here, but there is incredible detail to help anyone elicit the poses correctly. Dworkis also divides each pose for beginner, moderate, and advanced. After a particularly tough day of running and 5 sets of tennis, I followed the poses and felt refreshed, relaxed, and loose afterwards. The workout is also really only 20 minutes (after learning the poses) and fun to complete as well as challenging when striving for a more advanced level.

As an exercise physiologist and certified group fitness instructor/personal trainer I highly recommend this book. I have been hesitant to try yoga because of the contraindicated moves (called poses), however this book makes the necessary modifications so that the program is safe, yet still effective and fun. I have looked at many yoga books, and even more videos and classes and this is my favorite. I actually recorded (audio) myself reading some of the descriptions of the poses so that I could do the entire sequence with someone to "cue" me with the appropriate instructions!

This book is concise but at the same time very explanatory, clearly breaking down the process of community organizing into its essential elements, at least according to the author's perspective. The book was written a while ago, but the issues are still very relevant. I'm very new to reading about CO, but just reading the book got me very excited about the possibility for real change. I highly recommend it to other interested in entering the field.

Many churches and synagogues, when faced with a needy situation in their neighborhoods, are paralyzed or indecisive. Should they provide for the needy while ignoring the root cause of the distress? Should they urge their members to pursue political correctives through the ballot box? Should the institution involve itself in partisan politics?

None of these approaches is the best way, according to Gregory Pierce. If they are truly to have an impact on their social milieu, congegations must involve themselves in broadly-based community organizations large and powerful enough to confront underlying causes of need. This tried and proven method was developed forty years go by Saul Alinsky and is still employed successfully today.

In order to be effective in community organizations, however, congregations must be willing to work with other groups with different ideologies, and they must understand and be willing to utilize the levers of power. This book is a primer for lay leaders and clergy who want to move their congregations into the arena of activism. It tells them what to do -- and what not to do -- if they want to make a difference in their neighborhoods.

This thick book is worth much more than 5 stars! If I lost this book I'd be willing to pay more than 4X's the price to get it back. Not only is this loaded with all the recipes you'd expect in a good cookbook (beverages, soups, meats, desserts, Entrees, snacks Etc), but it has much more with it. There are charts and how to's, International cusine, Weight gaining OR reducing menus, and loads of sound advice AND the inspiration to follow it! Two things about the title might mislead you. 1. GOURMET.., In this book gourmet means superior flavor and nutrient content but you do NOT need even half a year of cooking school to make these recipes..,very user friendly book. 2. HEALTH.., Healthy does not mean you're eating only tasteless weeds. The recipes are better than my many other cookbooks (soon to be discarded) as far as flavor, color, appeal goes, plus you get the health benefits. If people actually eat the way the BraGG health pioneers suggest, medical bills would be way, way down and vitality soaring. Children fortunate enough to have parents who feed them these goodies will be blessed for a lifetime. Thank you Amazon! I don't think I could have found this anywhere else.

Your body was designed to eat unprocessed "live foods". The trick is to make them taste good. This book is jammed with 1,000 healthy recipes your family will love. Gourmet Health Recipes is more than a cookbook; it is a guide to a new healthy lifestyle.

Do not be confused by the low price on this book. Health Science prints in such large quantities, they can afford to keep their prices low. This is a very popular book. Nineteenth edition, now enlarged and revised.

Paul Bragg started the health food movement over eighty-eight years ago. His Daughter, the Amazing Patricia Bragg, is accelerating their tradition of promoting the healthy lifestyle. She publishes a number of health-nutrition books and markets her own brand of apple cider vinegar, olive oil and aminos. See her picture on the bottles.

I have known Health Science and Patricia Bragg and have followed her healthy lifestyle program for over 20 years.

As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I highly recommend Health Science books to anyone not tired of living. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.
