Before you end up in the international markets saying, "Help! What am I supposed to do now?", avoid that predicament by reading Michael Hick's "Global Deals". That way, you will start out with the guidance of an experienced global businessman, an enthusiastic mentor who has "been there, done that" in every corner of the global market for over 40 years. In a sense, to read this book is to go to a party of colorful global marketing pros, where you can learn from their anecdotes, their gaffes, their hilarious or embarrassing mistakes, their years on the road, their lessons for the uninitiated. From all of this accumulated wisdom, the author pulls together advice, rules, checklists, warnings, but mainly his perception and sensitivities about the various cultures, in order to give you the main thing he wants you to have: a "global mindset": a way of understanding, accepting, appreciating, and doing business with a rich variety of people in the world who are waiting to buy from or sell to your companies. With special chapters dealing with the role of women in international markets, and even with protecting yourself against kidnapping in some countries, "Global Deals" is definitely a "must read" for every businessman who realizes that his market is now global. It is a thorough handbook that should be in every businessman's briefcase.

For almost 40 years,I have been traveling the globe selling high tech systems.
Global Deals aptly describes the events of all those many years. But I learnt the hard way and Oh! How I wish Michael Hick's book was in my briefcase.

This is an interesting, informative read written in anecdotal style, which suits the busy business traveler. You can read a chapter and put in down and go back to it a day later and read that chapter again or read another chapter and always the result is a learning process.

I consider myself an expert on the subject and can assert that in this book he has captured all the essential ingredients of what makes for a successful deal on a global basis. From the most simple to the most complex of ideological, cultural and business elements, he shows how the other side tends to approach a deal and what our thinking process should be.

Now more than ever, technology allows global deals to be accomplished behind a desk. Even more reason to understand the cultural, psychological, business, language and other differences that make global deal exciting and rewarding.

For those that don't want to learn the hard way, this book is the answer.

Michael Hick has written an extremely readable book that explains the reasons for many misunderstandings between people of different cultures. Every person who has any international contacts should read this book. The "cultural clash" is brought into sharp focus. An excellent read with interesting, real life, illustrations.

Having read this book a while ago, I fully concur with a "Reader from New York". Unlike more recent books on sourcing/outsourcing, there are no hypes in this book. You can get a very straightforward, impartial view. Sure will recommend it for anyone working in this area, practitioners and academics alike.

Global sourcing has become a buzzword in recenty years, thanks to increased outsourcing activities. I purchased this book (published in 1992) in January, 2000. Kotabe examined sourcing issues from an "in-house sourcing" rather than an "outsourcing" point of view. In a way, it is a very refreshing viewpoint as he talks of benefits and costs (long-term risks) of certain in-house sourcing vs. outsourcing. A lot of us who are in charge of "outsourcing" for the sake of being contemporary in our business thinking (and deeds) tend to ignore some fundamental weaknesses of outsourcing that Kotabe points out. Although this is a research book, it has had me do some deep thinking on our corporate sourcing strategy. You can get a lot of food for thought. It got to be a must reading for strategists in charge of sourcing/outsourcing/procurement/supply chain management, whatever you call our jobs.

...It is refreshing to read this 1992 book in2000. Eight years is a long time, and many concepts de jour haveappeared and cluttered our thought on sourcing/procurement/outsourcing/insourcing/offshoring/supply chain management/ or whatever terms come across your mind. This book is a no-nonsense, yet easy-to-read, academic book. I have been reading Kotabe's work over the years. After reading this book, read his article that appeared in the Nov. 98 issue of the Academy of Management Executive. I was fortunate enough to have a class taught by Dr. Roach, and I have to say that this book is superb. Each concept has an essay that concisely explains the topic. It's very clear and very helpful in understanding anything concerning international relations, especially the international political economy. I'm keeping it after the class because it's so useful.

This book provides an excellent introduction to International Relations through an examination of concise essays concerning such areas as Terrorism, the Cold War, Human Rights and Globalisation among others. For a better understanding of the complexities of world events and to be well informed about historical concepts, this book is an excellent read. The subjects are placed in the broad sweep of history, pointing to relationships that will encourage discursive reading. International Relations - The Key Concepts, will remain the pre-eminent reference work, that in my view will be unsurpassed.

A great presentation of what I expected to be an unexciting topic. Examines the workings of the political system in a highly readable way. I was not only well-informed after I read the book, but entertained as well!

This is excellent material if you are conducting any kind of serious research on NAFTA and its negotiations' development and outcome. It provides with a huge theoretical framework, every step of the process. If your line of work is game theory, this book will really help you (or at least it worked wonders for me). This is mandatory reference material for anyone interested in studying NAFTA.

Mayer rivals Grisham. He enfolds the strategy of NAFTA like a good murder-mystery. More proof that reality is more entertaining than fiction. It's a thriller, a nail-biter. I couldn't put it down!

Culture shock is sometimes taken for granted, however to be cosmopolitan, is to have experienced a culture shock and being able to fully utilize it to your own benefit. Brazil is one of these places in the world were the unwritten rules are as important as the air you breath, if you intend to successfuly journey through this country, it is imperative that you learn about the culture, the history and the economy. Yet the most precious commodity you can come accross, is a friend... Because doors will be open to you in ways you've not yet experienced before. This book is a friend.

It is very small and quick to read. However, it was amazing how much quality information the author could pack into such a small space. She lived 18 years in Brazil, and as a Brazilian reading the book, I can tell she knows what she was talking about. It was also curious for me to learn about things that I always took for granted, or that I thought were specific to my personality rather than from the culture. Unfortunately it is out of print as of this writing (Dec 2003). I hope it gets reprinted soon.

This book is a great help in deciphering Brazilian customs and subtle cues. I would also recommend "A History of Brazil" and "The Brazilian Sound: Samba, Bossa Nova and the Popular Music of Brazil" as essential works that also give vital background.

I purchased this as a source for a class presentation. If my professor had not required that I have three sources, I would not have needed anything else. Great, up-to-date, practical information from someone who has been there. Great buy!

This succinct, highly readable guide to understanding Israeli culture and dealing with Israelis in business and social contexts makes observations solidly supported by academic research on the subject. Topics range from negotiating with Israelis to hot-button issues like religion and politics. The bibliography of books and Internet sites provides additional resources for those who want to know more. A must-read for Americans seeking successful intercultural communication with Israelis, whether in the U.S. or Israel.

I had originally purchased this book to use for a school project. While the book was extremely useful for my Human Resources class, I also found the issues and topics presented in the book to be of great interest. This book is easy reading, short and to the point.

The hypocrisy of Capital Punishment in the modern United States, the controversial presidency of Bill Clinton, and the influence of America on democracy in the Latin America, are the primary topics of "America's Controversies". Taken from the author's body of work produced while obtaining her Masters degree at the University of Guelph, Ksenija Arsic presents a detailed and thought-provoking look at America's political policies, with a fresh, somewhat-Canadian approach. The larger portion of the book involves a close look at capital punishment, from its history to its present day social and political acceptability, and even looks to the future, and the path most necessary, albeit difficult, for its possible elimination. The chapters devoted to the Clinton presidency focus on his legacy: whether he will be remembered for his social contributions, or his sexual exploits. Finally, the author looks at the success of the sudden introduction of democracy in Nicaragua, or lack thereof.

"America's Controversies" is very well written and researched. The subjects are innately interesting and certainly timely. Potential readers might expect that, since the papers were written for a Master's degree, those without similar education might not easily understand them. Fortunately, while Ksenija Arsic is obviously writing academically, with concentration and interest this book is enlightening and readable.

Ksenija Arsic earned her bachelor's degree in her homeland of Serbia, where she worked as a radio journalist. She currently resides in Guelph, Ontario.

Not simply for the academic elite, I highly recommend this book for those intrigued, or baffled, by American politics.

America's Controversies: The Death Penalty, Clinton's Presidency, And Export Of Democracy To Nicaragua by journalist researcher and writer Ksenija Arsic is an intriguing collection of independent essays and original research papers covering various aspects of modern America's political activities both national and international. Writing on such topics as capital punishment in terms of American and Canadian views which conflict with or are oppose to those of the Western European nations. Drawing from many in-depth research studies, America's Controversies expressly contributes to an expert descriptive analysis of America's actions and policies. A welcome addition to personal and academic library Political Science reference collections and Social Issues reading lists, America's Controversies is very highly recommended and informative reading.

All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the Apistogramma species of fishes many of which are among the most beautiful fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.

This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs and for anyone interested in Apistogramma in particular and fish-keeping in general it is a book to be treasured.

Its great to be able to identify or look up some of the newer finds. Any aquarist should find it useful.

Whether they are about Puffer fishes, or some other species of fish they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated.

They do not deal with the basics of fish keeping, there are many and varied books that do that. They are in the main a fish identification encyclopaedia and nothing more. But for those aquarists who are particularly interested in a single species they are indispensable.

I started off with 2 figure 8 puffers and fell in love with puffers. I now have 7 different species. I had a total of 10 different species but 3 of them died. I was desparate to find a book strictly about puffers. A pet store employee who also had an mbu puffer knew that I collected puffers and had ordered me this book. I now call it my bible. There are many bright and colorful pictures but the information on each puffer is very general. Ebert goes a little more into detail about the puffers that he had owned throughout his years of raising puffers. I use it mainly to match the species to the name (many times, pet stores do not give the correct name or scientific name). Then it's easier to look up more info on the internet. I like this book a lot just because it focuses on fresh and brackish water puffers only. There are so many books on goldfishes, cichlids, etc, but it's so hard to find one on puffers. Also, everying is measured in metric so I had to convert every measurement into gallons or inches.

I really love this book because I'm writing my research thesis on ACER, the Taiwanese PC multinational. This book gives a great overview of the global computer industry as well as in-depth analyses of the individual corporations...it's an interesting read on the newest and most exciting industry in the world - even if you are not formally studying the subject.
