Thought provoking, intelligent textbook

This textbook for International Economics is a rarity. It's intelligent, exceptionally well written by the experts in the field. It does include a thorough review of the state-of-the-art theory of international trade and finance. To facilitate learning and yet challenge the reader, the authors equipped each chapter with really tough exercises. Only having solved them one might have an impression that he grasped the metarial really well. Good exercises are an indispensable companion of a student. Here we have one of the best I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot. Superior to other textbooks and highly recommended.

Currently I am a student of Professor Jones, one of the text's authors. The text is as drawling and insufficient as Jones' lectures. My first complaint is that there is a crisis of definition. Having only taken one economics course prior, I find that the text tends to move too quickly through topics of international economics, failing to provide illustrative examples so one can better understand how theory is put into practice. Second, the conceptual framework, as in all classical economic theory, is rooted in a place far from reality, a point Jones fails to make clear. The world is not perfectly competitive and does not contain countries equipped with fully developed capitalist institutions (like banking and credit), necessary to make internal economic adjustments in the face of free trade prices. I find the utility of the course to be very low, especially when free-trade is non-existent in the world. Discussions on the state of the contemporary world are sorely needed, if at least to serve as as comparison to the theoretical one constructed by this text. My last complaint is Jones' characterization of "anti-globalizers," those who he claimed "rioted" and were "violent" on the streets of Seatle in 1999 during the meeting of the WTO. The irony is that many of those protesters were advocating for FREER trade, pointing out that US farm subsidies cripple the economies of some underdeveloped nations who primarily produce agricultural commodities. The text's mypopic view of economics will not help those interested in learning how the world economy actually operates.

Excellent text for open economy macroeconomics

We used this book in a one semester graduate class for International Economics. We used the book mostly for open economy macro as opposed to trade theory i.e. Chapter 16 & on. Like our professor told us, the book builds on concepts in a gradual fashion starting from the Marshall-Lerner condition right up to the Dornbusch Overshooting Model covering along the way, the basic Keynesian framework, Mundell-Fleming framework and, the policy assignment problem. The concepts helped us trace the causes for UK's renouncement of the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992 (and also how George Soros made his billions!). Using the book in this integrated fashion (Theory + Case Study) makes it a valuable addition to one's library.

Very clear instruction on international trade and finance

I found this book to be a very good learning tool, as the course reader for an introductory international economics course. I find that most textbooks are good as reference, not as learning tools, but this book is an exception. In a very concise manner, it builds theory upon theory of international trade, until the student has developed a strong set of analysis tools. The portion on international finance is good intro as well, even though it does not compare with more specialized texts. This text is sufficient to prepare the reader for any advanced trade issues, with the exception of more mathematically based arguments (which the book does not develop, given its focus on beginners).

One gets to a point in one's life where there is clearly a "before" and "after". This book marks my personal epiphany. "Before" - a Friday night steak special at my neighborhood family restaurant and trading in heifer futures. "After" - a daily smorgasbord of animal waste parts at my own dining room table and the endless opportunites of the Egyptian bovine, sheep, goat, poultry, horse and ass meat market. I am moved beyond further comment.

Where to start? This one is a real page-turner. I could not put it down. First, the author blows the lid off the import market for edible offals of bovine, sheep, goat, poultry, horse and ass meat in Egypt. Just when you think it's over and there could be nothing more, the author proceeds to similarly blow the lid off the EXPORT market for edible offals of bovine, sheep, goat, poultry, horse and ass meat in Egypt. Simply amazing and well worth every cent. This author is going places in the world of ass meat.

Even though I love this fish, this book doesn't have enough for the price. If you just want to have the aqualog collection, then by all means add it. Unlike some other books it tells you enough info about the fish to make identifications and keep good care.

All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the Polypterus species of fishes many of which are among the most beautiful fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.

This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs. These unusual fishes are not everyone's cup of tea, but many people do find them attractive and if you are one of those people this book is a must for you.

If you love bichirs it's its a must have otherwise save your money.

This is the only book I've found specifically on Polypterus (Bichirs). The book mostly consists of high quality pictures of the various species but there is a section in the front with some descriptions and information on aquarium care. It's not really a comprehensive book however. It doesn't really have a lot of information that you can't get from other sources. Information on care and feeding can readily be found on the internet and in any case bichirs are so tough they need minimal care compared to most aquarium fish. Also the layout of the book isn't that good. I would have rather seen the text and pictures for each species placed together. Still for someone like me (see my Amazon username :-P) it's a must have. If you aren't really into Polypterus you can skip it however. It looks like the author is German and all the text is in German with English translations.

This is at best a choppy book, written by various people on their perceptions of Asian business. I think it does little to explain how Asian businesses actually operate -- some it is PR, some of it hype and some just regurgitation from mewspapers, etc. These are some of the same types of people so picked on by the IMF now for failing to inform them how business actually functioned in Asia! The most telling evidence - although written just prior to the onslaught of the Asian crisis, none of the "experts" foresaw it or its effects on competitive business operations in Asia. It is even less useful now. Marginal at best.

The Author is such an ediot to the extent that he/she or whatever ediot editors helping them to issue this book, are saying that the Israelies won the war in October 1973; while that it is a fact that the egyptian army had them surrounded and was about 40 miles of their capital ready to make them a history,if it wasn't for the U.S stepping in; Israel would have been a history !
I wonder how much did the israely government paid you stupid to publish such lies ? I have no respect for you biast !

I had this book for one of my classes at my University this semester, and although the content of the book is concise and updated, nonetheless the authors rely too much on self-reference. The book is written too much from a "USA is superior" perspective. I also found some errors such as translations from other languages that were completely off. If you have to get this book for Intl. Business it is overall a good book, but if you can get a better one, do so.

I wouldn't mind using international version since there is hardly any difference, but don't bait and switch on me I don't like it. I'd buy from someone else if the price was within a couple bucks. Got my book not from Chicago as advertised, but Thailand. However it was delivered in no time.

As a software developer working in this industry, I found this to be a truly breezy, pick-me-up of a read. I couldn't put it down. I hope that Sheep The Edible Offals of Bovi, et al are working on the next riveting issue of this compendium.

Hopefully, the next installment will give more attention to the issues surrounding exports of subterranean offal. Many countries, particularly in the West, are investing post-millennial resources developing this emerging market with a heretofore unimaginable gusto.

Well, all things told, I have to say that this one was a bit of a letdown. Of course, following such a massive achievement as the 1999 edition is a tough act no matter how you look at it. A better preparation job would have been in order, I find that the bovine and ass sections tend to drag. The introductory chapter adequately sets up the whole thing, but the structure seems a little lacking. All in all, I would say that the research group needs to get their act together if they are going to hold our interest much longer.

I am reasonably certain that Miss Bundy has never set foot in Israel, and if she has, that she spent as much of her time boozing herself silly in the hotel bar, and as little of it actually observing anything about her, as do the pathetic protagonists of her truly mediocre book.

Had this book not been billed as "set against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict" one could never have guessed where the weak plot plays out. Not one of her middle eastern characters rings true to life, nor does she have anything at all to say about the conflict or its issues.

If you're interested in a vaguely seedy and slow moving mystery about a sorry bunch of addicts wallowing in self-pity and constantly in desperate need of a shrink, or their mummy, or maybe just another few rounds of vodka and valium -then go ahead and read this book. Otherwise, I'd give it a miss.

I've used this book for a number of years with managers from different countries as well as with college students in China. My only complaint is that the publisher has not updated the material. For example, there's no mention of the Internet or use of email for business communications. However, the text, cases, activities, vocabulary, etc. provide the ESL teacher with a great foundation that can easily be built on. Suitable for a wide range of English language abilities but geared toward intermediate students. This remains the most effective business-culture text I've been able to find.

Great Textbook for Business Culture ESL Class

Review Date: 2003-09-28
This series of case studies is an excellent template for upper intermediate and higher ESL students interested in discussing cultural issues in a business context. I used this in Japan for a few years. The book is well suited for a jigsaw approach by initially dividing the class in 2, then pairing students for an information exchange before a round table discussion. The vocabulary is challenging at that level, and there are additional word form exercises at the end of each unit. There's lots of room for teachers and students to build on the themes with personal anecdotes, and for extensions into vocabulary and pronunciation. Students get lots of opportunity to participate, analyse, and give opinions, and use the target vocabulary - and there's always an opportunity to compare the topic cultures with the local culture. This is a great course book for an introduction to Business cultural issues for ESL students.

My mistake I suppose

Review Date: 2002-03-04
Yes, I should have read the publisher's review properly... This book is for low-medium level students of English, and offers some useful angles for learning. However, in my opinion it is of little help for people who have to DO business across cultures. If the reader is struggling with English to the extent that they would find this book relevant to their needs, then they are likely to be out of a job if using that language in the workplace.

As an ESL text it may have uses in the hands of a good teacher (because the material is superficial). If your or your students actually need to LEARN something about doing business outside your home country, look elsewhere.

I agree with the Costa Rican reviewer, Gudmundson lifts the liberal blinders that coffee barons lead to an agricultural hegemony completely detrimental to the previous ways of life!

Another book which lucidly discusses these issues is "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made" by Colesberry & McLean, in the chapter, "Coffee! Costa Rica's First Revolution."

I recommend both books for enlightened reading!

Costa Rica Before Coffee is a book that clearly states that the myth of the land-holding self-sufficient peasant isn't true. Many Costa Ricans believe that before coffee our country was a paradise in which everybody used to own land and where there were no discrepancies in the society. With elegance, statistics and history; Lowell clearly expalins that coffee helped reinforce the democratic model in Costa Rica instead of undermining it.

This is an incredible achievement - stunning photographs of shrimps, crabs and 'prawns' from all over the world - more than any diver could hope to see in a lifetime. The quality of the reproductions and the wealth of biological information makes this a must-have book for anyone who likes to see more than just a few coloured fish when they dive. It is particularly accessible to the non-scientist and I can't imagine anyone with an interest in marine life reading this and not learning something.

Useless to anyone in the eastern US; probably elsewhere

Apparently, my eternal quest to find a decent guide to western Atlantic crustaceans will remain just that, eternal! The author must be quite impressed with it as his photo credits are written in a bigger font than the names of the animals! While these pictures are wonderful, and the descriptions provide a fair amount of information, glaring omissions are the rule rather than the exception. For instance, the three most important and common commercial shrimp in the southeastern US, , and < Litopenaeus setiferus>, are not mentioned anywhere in the text! Nor is , the ubiquitous blue crab, and most of the other Portunid crabs of the US (note: is mentioned in a small blurb, though not described). None of the common hermit crabs, lady crabs or purse crabs of the western Atlantic is listed. Forget about anything that may be most common in brackish settings such as the marsh crabs, shore crabs or mud crabs! is listed, but a juvenile is shown in the photo! There are only two species of fiddler and box crabs listed and only three spider/arrow crabs. Even Palaemonetes vulgaris, the grass shrimp that is so common I've found them in the pockets of my bathing suit, is omitted. Don't think you will be able to use this as a key either. There is nothing that compares species that might be confused. I cannot imagine who this book was intended for, but it is useless to anyone, scientist or layperson, in the eastern US. I am not an expert on Indo-Pacific, eastern Atlantic or Pacific forms, but I would imagine the same for those regions; the book is not that big! If you need a guide to the Crustacea of the US, you will have to stick with Ruppert and Fox's "Seashore Animals of the Southeast", though it is far from comprehensive; the FAO Marine Resources guides, limited to commercial species; or the scientific literature.

Crustacea Guide Of The World, althought written for the lay "marine biologist" is none-the-less scientifically correct. The book is divided into two sections, Atlantic decapods and Pacific decapods, giving the reader the ability to more acurately and quickly identify the animal of interest. Included within the text are short stories illuminating interesting behaviors of decapods. Paired with a photograph of each animal the author has provided, along with a concise description, the geographical distribution. For anyone interested in marine life I highly recommend this book to be added to their library.
