Charles Mitchell's book offers an excellent introduction to the differences in attitudes, values, protocol, rituals, traditions, communication styles and other characteristics that commonly separate cultures. He distinguishes people's basic cultural traits from different national groups, while noting regional and individual variations, too. Mitchell cites examples from many major nations, including the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Israel, Australia, China, Japan, Russia, Vietnam and India, and from Hispanic and Arabic cultures. The book is clearly written and well organized, with tips on giving gifts, negotiating, handling verbal and non-verbal communications, holding meetings and conducting business in general. We [...] say tuck this into your carry-on bag - the farther you're going, the more you'll need it.

Doctor Gonzo mumbles, he shoots AND. . . kinda scores.

Review Date: 1998-07-10
The cover of this audiobook clearly states that it is read by the author. That is only partially true. The first three minutes are read by the author, and then they bring in some yutz actor to finish the job, because Hunter got too drunk. You can literally hear the scotch swishing around in his glass while he tries to mumble through the words. He starts, he stops, he starts again, he questions his own prose, he has a drink, he starts all over, he has another drink, he starts, he gives up, and then he decides to start shooting his gun. That gives him a rhythm, and just as he starts rolling, they dub in an actor.

sigh. What's a true fan to do? Fact is, the only reason to buy this tape if you're a true fan is for long car trips -- then it's damn near indispensable, like the keys, the travellers checks, and the heroin. Otherwise, it's not terribly well done, and a large chunk of the thing is just not all that good. Still, other than Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it's the only one of his books I know of on tape.

The muslims have been about eight centuries in Iberia . Some roots in the south remain .Of course they have lived with people of other religions , but it was not a paradise . They were more developed than the local people , in the agriculture , in the sciences , and architecture . By these reasons , they had relationship with the east , mainly Egipt , north Africa and some christian Countries . This helped , but it was not enough . This book is a very good help to understand some reasons of its so long presence .

The ordeals of immigrant casual workers in England
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-30
Marina Lewycka continues to mine the seam she opened up in A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, of immigrants (mainly from Eastern Europe, but also some from China and Africa) coming to Britain - this time to earn money picking strawberries, working on a chicken farm, in a restaurant etc. The book shows how these immigrant workers are exploited: passports confiscated by the crooked and violent agents (Eastern European themselves), miserable wages, diminished by extortionate deductions for all sorts of things, including for the rent of the most awful accommodation. Very often migrant workers also cheat compatriots who trust them, and the prejudices that citizens of one East European country have for those of a neighbouring country are also well brought out. Illegal migrants from outside the EU who pretend to be legal immigrants from EU countries (e.g. Brazilians claiming to be Portuguese) are particularly vulnerable, as the gang masters well know. There is a horrific description of the way chickens are treated in battery farms.

As in Tractors, the sombre nature of their ordeals is `lightened' by humour, though I didn't think the book was nearly as funny as the earlier book. There is again the hilariously fractured English spoken by some of the immigrants, though one of the girls, Irina, speaks remarkably good English. (She is the only character whose story is told in the first person.) The book focuses in turn on eight particular workers (and, very tediously, on the thoughts of a dog who follows them around), but the characterization is fairly shallow, certainly compared with the richness of the four central characters in Tractors. Being young, a lot of their thoughts are about sex (the naive Malawian, who had been educated by Catholic nuns, is eager to acquire canal - sic - knowledge; the letters he writes home to his sister are a lovely blend of high-flown language and delicious errors); and there is a stop-go love-story about bourgeois Irina from the anti-Russian Western Ukraine and working-class Andriy from the Donbas mining region in the pro-Russian Eastern Ukraine.

The novel also has some of the characteristics of a road movie, as the characters travel up and down England in vans or caravans and meet up with various English `characters'. Towards the end, in a rather attractive section, they fall in with a group of tree-hut-dwelling eco-warriors. Less credible are the number of occasions when, in different parts of England, they run into the same sinister exploiters.

searching for trading partners ?

For those of you involved in international trade, and interested in finding partners in Ukraine, the book is an extensive directory of contacts. Written in English, that in itself is useful. The background on each company does tend to vary. Some companies have very cursory data, while others are already well established in foreign trade.

Not every company listed has a website. These days, that is probably the first thing you would look for. Trying out several of the websites given in the book shows that these often have English language pages.

Very good catalogue of fish for those who seek an overview of all families. One or two more infos would be sometimes helpfull (sex, size). Some families are underrepresanted (Gobiidae, Blenniidae) but including all of them would have been difficult as they are huge families. I would recomend using it as a first identification source (not on the field though...big!) and then switch to a more specialized book providing more infos about the species. A must have for all marine fish enthusiast!

This book, a guide to the WTO agreements, gives a brief historical background of the framework that produced them, and also predecessor agreements whenever these are relevant for understanding the new provisions. The text explains technical terms in understandable language, giving examples whenever appropriate. The author, a fomer India's ambassador and Permanent Representative to GATT and Deputy Permanent Representative to UNCTAD, wrote it based on the materials prepared as the training modules for UNCTAD; so don't expect to find any critical view of the WTO agreements, but rather a concise explanation of them.

I know everyone has thier opinion and story about this book, some loved it and some thought is was over sold - well, I think that depends on where you are and how open you are to experiencing growth. My story is that this book moved me in ways unimaginable. I absolutely loved the journey and the truths discovered along the way. If you are still trying to figure it all out and would love some great insight, read this book. It has become almost like a reference for me - I plan to read it many times throughout me life. I am grateful to people like Elizabeth Gilbert who have the courage and foresight to put themselves out there and share thier stories with us - she has given all of us a gift.

Engaging memoir about a woman's search for self and happiness

Although this book gained huge popularity almost immediately after its release--which was a full two years ago now--initially, I had some reluctance to read it. This is surprising given that 1) I'm about the same age as the author, 2) I generally really enjoy memoirs, and 3) I've studied Italian and am into yoga, which are two of the three major themes of this book. However, my sense from others who had read EAT, PRAY, LOVE before me was that for all those who loved the book, just as many hated it, finding it to be self-indulgent.

So, is this book self-indulgent? Well, of COURSE it is--but what memoir isn't? You could dismiss the entire book by saying that author Elizabeth Gilbert is, like so many other women before her, simply trying to "find herself" after an ugly divorce. While this is arguably true, the universal nature of Gilbert's general situation doesn't make the particular details of her story any less interesting. The fact is, Gilbert is an engaging writer, and although the pages of her book might should "ME, ME, ME!", she certainly provides her readers with a clear portrayal of her year of transformative travel. Readers are with Gilbert each step of the way as she learns to experience pleasure again in Italy (through the joy of wonderful food), to connect with a higher being in India (by practicing yoga and meditation at her Guru's ashram), and to find peace and love in Bali.

There were a few things I didn't like about Gilbert's writing style. For example, she seemed to be unnecessarily coy at times, like when she made the specific point of saying within the first few pages of the book that she wasn't going to let readers know anything about what went wrong with her ex-husband. She also refused to reveal the name of her Guru, something that of course can easily be obtained on the internet (and in fact now appears in Gilbert's own blog). But overall, I found this book to be enjoyable: I enjoyed taking part in Gilbert's journey and truly rooted for her happiness in the end.

She did it again!

This author sounds like very immature for her age. At age 35, she is still dreaming to be loved like a princess. She is very needy, needs a full attention from everyone, particularly from her lover. Her inner voice tells her that she doesn't want to have children. I think her inner voice is right about it. How can she take of children when she needs a full attention herself. From the book I feel that she is someone who always gets what she wants in a selfish way. That book doesn't say exactly what happened to her marriage and when a marriage is over, it can't be just one person's fault but because of her personality, I almost think that her husband is mad because she is so selfish and always do everything in her way, and gets everything she wants at the end.

I really wanted to like this book because I am on a journey to find inner peace myself. I was hoping to learn some good tips from this book. For me it was OK in Italy and India but I closed the book at the line in Indonesia "I go straight back to Felipe"s house and I don't leave his bedroom for approximately another month."
That was it for me. She did it again. It was such a disappointment to read the line and know that she didn't learn a thing. I felt like I wasted my time reading this book this far. I hope she can prove me wrong to spend her rest of her life happily with Felipe. It sounds like a good match for her to have a much older guy.

Uplifting memoir and includes one of the most accurate depictions of the frustration of learning how to meditate (and how she finally "got it").
