A OK book

I read this book few months ago and felt that it was OK. It did not have a whole lot of "new" ideas per se, but some points such as the chicken and e, sitting comfortably and e hotbeds were kind of interesting. Also the book talked about power shift (from brawn to brain, thinkers for the new age...etc.), but hey, wait a minute! Don't forget that we are still human beings and human still have to EAT!! That's probably one of the reasons that people gave too much expectation to "new" economy while the new economy failed to deliver (to create super high performance to replace the old old system)...

Anyway, a interesting book to read

Down-to-earth reading about business and foreign cultures.

Many of our clients, especially those with smaller companies that are new to export, are advised by our consulting staff to read this book BEFORE they begin negotiating international contracts. We also suggest that they mark key paragraphs and review them while enroute to foreign countries. Being able to move smoothly in overseas cultures is a huge competitive advantage. It is often the difference between success and failure in international commerce. John r. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute.

econometric analysis and case studies
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-01
The book has both econometric analysis and case studies of global integration. Studying examples in Czech companies, Bulgaria and Mexico. For the latter, it is suggested that NAFTA's boost to Mexican industry is not sufficient for further progress. As measured by such things as a country's patenting in a given field, relative to other countries. The innovations resulting from Mexico do not compare favourably with Taiwan, South Korea or Israel, in the areas that a country primarily exports. Suggesting that the national level of innovation is not fully supporting crucial sectors of the economy.

The book also studies foreign direct investment and how this might or has generated technology benefits. Here, the results are mixed. FDI might improve a national productivity, but this is not guaranteed. In part, it depends on policies of multinationals that perform the FDI, and the extent to which they also transfer technology into a country.

improved financial and goods mobility
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-29
From the vantage of Latin America, the results of decades of globalisation on the economic development of the region's countries are studied. We see that in recent years, there has been a marked increase in financial and goods mobility. Most countries now allow and often indeed encourage foreign direct investment. The more the better is a common view of governments. Which differs markedly from some earlier policies that sought to isolate a nation's currency dealings.

The increased goods mobility is also another aspect. Often involving the export of commodities to developed nations.

In marked distinction is the still limited labour mobility. The developed nations have proved far more reluctant in the granting of temporary migrations from Latin America.

The role of the WTO in supporting and expanding globalisation is given. Often, this involves pushing for the reduction of tariff barriers. But also for the equal treatment of imports where these are goods also made by domestic companies.

I really enjoyed this book, and it has dramatically affected the way I look at the world. That said, at times I wished it had been written better. Often I felt that it repeated itself or stated facts without explaining them or placing them in any sort of context. A good start.

As a seasoned professional in the export/import business, I like this book for its breadth of substance. This could also be an interesting college or graduate school textbook for those pursuing a career in the field.

This book is an excellent reference for importing. However if you, like me, are starting a very small importing business I would recommend a different book. This book is geared a lot more towards major importing.

The troubled prospects of multinational enterprises
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-04
The book's subtitle reveals the author's position. Thirty years ago, Raymond Vernon was one of the first economists to document the increasing importance of globalization and of the multinational corporations that benefited most directly from the trend. In this, his last book before his recent death, he revisits the subject, and finds cause for growing concern about the future of the multinationals, despite the fact that they have grown tremendously in terms of size and power.

Once their expansion was viewed with suspicion and hostility by many of their new host countries, but now multinationals are actively wooed throughout most of the world for their job-creating investments in local economies. However, within their own home countries (predominantly the advanced economies of the U.S., Europe, and Japan), the multinationals are increasingly a source of political tension. There is a fundamental conflict between the desire of the state to maximize the well-being of its own people and the desire of a multinational to optimize its global system regardless of the impact that might have within any individual country, including its own home country. The combination of global competition and aging populations has increased the demand for government sponsored social support in the most advanced economies, even as the same pressures encourage multinationals to move investments and jobs out of their high-cost home countries. Although globalization is not likely to be reversed, the multinationals may increasingly find themselves used as convenient scapegoats for the problems caused by this massive restructuring of the global economy. The recent WTO riots in Seattle may only be the beginning.

Stimulating reading for new exporters.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-10
A very interesting collection of papers, articles and case studies on international marketing and how it affects a domestic business organization. We have recommended it to our clients and they have responded favorably. The word "stimulating" was used most often to describe the content. The most common negative comments, although few, were about the types of companies discussed. They wished that there were more examples of how small companies became successful exporters.

I found the bood to be very informative, and very easy to understand, unlike other law books on the matter. It was a short read, and a thorough introduction to international business transactions.
