Often confusing and trite

There is little here that is new, but a couple of metaphors; however, the compilation is quite original. Of the two metaphors, the snake and double helix, after finding them on almost every page and certainly in every chapter, I found the continuous references at first a slight novelty, than overdone and irritating. I also the found the book inundated with make-believe examples, and "statistics" on the phenomenal growth of the Tiger economies -- a nostalgic hearkening back to the good old days of "Asian values" touted by Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew. Do not avoid this book -- but do read it with another that marries the concept of East Asian values to real-life managerial strategies such as Haley's "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advanatges."

Insightful!

I found Mastering the Infinite Game to be a very helpful resource while writing an organizational behavior research paper about Asian cultures. The studies and research included in the book are both useful and insightful to gaining an understanding how Asian cultural values pertain to the field of business manangement.

A must-read for those interested in doing business with Asian firms!

This is an ok product, with lots of nice pictures of sharks and rays. There is also small stories, that is interesting to read. Not very scientific.

There is little that I can add to the above, publisher's description, as it is accurate and succinct. As a diver, interested in sharks and rays, I find this book both fascinating and invaluable. The book is primarily a pictorial guide so the photographs are very good quality. Each photo is supplemented with information on habitat, length, width, distribution, depth found at and general information helpful in identifying the species discussed.

Hopefully this book will go some way to helping people understand these beautiful creatures and will help protect them from the aweful killing spree that fishermen all over the world have undertaken on this species. Between 40 to 100 million sharks are slaughtered every year [along with tens of millions of rays)in the most brutal fashion, many are just finned and their bodies discarded like trash into the ocean. Not only is this wasteful and cruel but it is unsubstainable fishing at it's worst. Please do not eat shark meat, shark fin soup or buy products made from sharks. If sharks become extinct, and we are heading that way, it will be a disaster for our oceans world wide.

good overview for those who were asleep during the 1990's

This is a pretty good book for those who were not paying attention to Asia during the 1990's. It is quite similar to Asian Eclipse by Backman. Indeed Vines even quotes Backman in 'Years'.
Vines has compiled lots of humourous anecdotes, but which will already be very familiar to those with any Asia experience.
Two areas which are weak: a few factual errors when Vines gets into the specifics of characters, esp. in areas he is obviously less familiar with, ie. Thailand. Also the book often contrasts 'bad' Asia with 'good' Japan, indicating that perhaps Vines could do with spending a bit more time studying Japan. Its not all good...

But a good overview of a very interesting period in a fascinating region of the world.

A superbly written, wide-ranging analysis

In The Years Of Living Dangerously, Stephen Vines puts into perspective the events which propelled Asia's economies into an unprecedented period of growth, and authoritatively exposes the myth the notion that foreign investors were primarily responsible for the massive capital flight that precipitated the crash of the Asian markets and economies. Rather the responsibility lay with governmental excesses, nepotism, corruption, ignorance, and ideological inflexibility. A highly recommended addition to professional and academic economic studies and international studies reading lists, The Years Of Living Dangerously is a superbly written, wide-ranging analysis, and presents an ideal introduction to, and explanation of, recent and continuing Asian economic woes.

Read this and learn more about corn starch and Italy. It's like "A Room With A View" but with corn starch.

Buy it and some bags of corn starch from Amazon's grocery area and you have yourself a great gift!

Great source of info- need a thicker book for 5 stars

This is a great book with lots of info (more than other books) about the habitats the most frequently found brackish water fish are found in. It has scats, monos, gobies, skippers, datnoids, etc. Ther great thing about this book it tells you about the fish listed as brackish that really are not. Something unique to this book is it discussion on how to set up a tidal system for your fish to mimic natural systems. Whgat is missing is typical aquarium info like ph,dh, etc for the fish and their tolerance levels. This book is more about the fish itself than how to keep it in my opnion. Of course there are tons of books with the aforementioned info so they probably decided to give something new. There is some info on water parameters but this is told in a general sense (like D. micro. needing freshwater while D. quadri. and D camp. need brackish without telling you a recommended SG). Well worth the buy for new info on brackish fish. Puts to rest some misconceptions. Buy it if you are a brackish fish enthusiast. For brackish beginners I recommend Neale Monks book as this book is for those that already have the basic information.

This book is a must read for anyone studying modern US military history and especially US weapons procurement policy. This is not a "shoot em up" book, but a well detailed account of US weapons export policy and what the US actually exports to its clients. The question is often raised as to what happens to all the weapon systems when they're retired. This book answers that question as well as other questions about contemporary US military weapons procurement. Anyone who is begining a career as a procurement specialist in and around the US military must read this book.

was this just a talkfest?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-03
The book centres around ASEM - Asia-Europe Meeting. Where here Asia really means East Asia. ASEM began in 1996, and involves regular meetings to discuss policies; mostly about trade issues. But with development in Asia being another major topic. The book relates how within a year of getting started, the financial crises of 1997, the Asians became preoccupied with managing their way out of the recession. Leaving the Europeans to dominate ASEM.

Mostly, a cynic might regard ASEM as a fancy talkfest. Many meetings, seminars and conferences were financed and convened under its rubric. Mostly about dialog between the parties. Some benefit was gotten by informally involving NGOs, especially those from Asia, in parallel meetings. This encouraged the development of civil societies, giving operational space to the NGOs and, hopefully, having several Asian governments see their NGOs as providing useful support.

Geoff Hiscock profiles Asia's top 100 billionaires in this fascinating overview of the region's economic landscape. The first half of the book examines the Asian economy, setting the stage for the later depictions of the Asian rich and famous. Hiscook's in-depth reporting shines, as does his conversational style. We from getAbstract recommend this book to all readers with an interest in the global economy.
