Otter Skins, Boston Ships, and China Goods: The Maritime Fur Trade of the Northwest Coast, 1785-1841

Good coverage of interesting topic
Too much has been made of Lewis & Clark. The real exploration of America's West Coast and the real contribution to American culture was that of a select group of Boston traders who departed poor their New England homes, turned round the Cape, and up to the Pacific Northwest, there trading iron and wool for otter skins, the most dense and precious of all mammal pelts and one of two items alone that the Chinese would deign to purchase from Americans.

Gibson tells the stories of these men, the men who established profitable trade for America, who brought hard currency into a broken economy, who set the stage for the American heritage of exploration cum capitalism that we see today in Silicon Valley.

I don't believe it is a coincidence that the shares held by the investors (half), captain (tenth), supercargo (seven percent), and crew (33 percent, total) mirrors that of technology companies today.

Passport China
An informative, concise introduction to the culture and customs of the People's Republic of China. The book begins with a brief overview of the country, climate, language, and major cultural influences. It continues with a section on the business environment, which includes: basic attitudes of the Chinese government toward business; the work environment; Chinese attitudes about time, meetings and negotiating; and some strategies for success. There follows a section on Chinese customs and etiquette which includes: Chinese names, titles and greetings; communication styles; dress and appearance; entertaining and socializing. The final section contains additional information about basic Chinese phrases (not helpful since Chinese is a tonal language), how to address correspondence, some useful numbers, and some Internet address and additional books on China.

Having lived and taught in China for a few years, I can attest to the accuracy of the content. I even learned a few things myself. This is a good book for someone who needs a quick introduction to the subject of doing business in China. However, for anyone having a position of responsibility in a business venture in China, I would definitely recommend further reading on the subject.

This book is not what I was looking for. I give it a 4 of 5 stars because it give me some insite to the 'Pilipina' (as the call them selves) at work and why they seem to be a polite people. I was looking for is dealing with the Philippina people on a personal basis. For the business person working or visiting the Philippines it is a highly recomended book. Thanks Amazon.com

The Politics of Oil in the Caucasus and Central Asia: Prospects for Oil Exploitation and Export in the Caspian Basin (Adelphi Paper (International Institute for Strategic Studies), 300)

Pipelines to Where ?
This is a very expensive little book - well it was for me - it is a 67 pages long - still it was worth it - for me. It is an Adelphi Paper (#300) so that is partly why it was not so cheap. The Author - Rosemarie Forsythe is a career diplomat so she brings a certain bias to the direction of this work - but at least you know where she is coming from.

Divided into 5 small chapters - History of Oil in the region, Oil exploration and export, Major Projects, Export options and lastly prospects for the region. This work like Roberts' Caspian Pipelines - I would view as required reading - for a good general background to the issue of oil (not gas) in the Caspian Region - although written in 1996 - it is valuable to see what has changed - and what has not.

As a book I found it to be a good read - although it is a very short book - it only provides a brief overview of the main projects of 1996 - such as Tengizchevroil and the AIOC asperon sill project - these are of course the main projects but there are other possibliy bigger ventures in the wind - especially in the north Caspian. Passing references are made to the role of China, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey in the push for the pipelines to traverse their territory.

Written as a geostrategic work the underlying tone of this tome is just that - and to quite honest I think it is the only way to correctly interpret the issue of energy reserves and pipeline direction in the caspian region. This book - like many others does not provide a basis for what geopolitics/geostrategy is, so for some readers that are not aware of this, the subtle nuances may be lost

The author identies 7 policy options for contributing to the long term viability of energy reserve development in the region - and to date 3 of these 7 options are taking shape - albeit slowly. Firstly mutlipipeline routes as opposed to one MEP. Second devlopment of the littoral states technical and legal infrasturute - albeit piecemeal and lastly a slight increase in environmental concerns.

A good book for doctoral students.
The book offers a good overview into brand marketing in particular to doctoral students. The cases provide a more practical aspect to the subject, after all, marketing is really practice oriented. I am half way through my thesis and the book refines many of my ideas and helps me immensely in reminding me of several issues that I otherwise have overlooked.

Insightful!
Charles Mitchell's book offers an excellent introduction to the differences in attitudes, values, protocol, rituals, traditions, communication styles and other characteristics that commonly separate cultures. He distinguishes people's basic cultural traits from different national groups, while noting regional and individual variations, too. Mitchell cites examples from many major nations, including the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, Israel, Australia, China, Japan, Russia, Vietnam and India, and from Hispanic and Arabic cultures. The book is clearly written and well organized, with tips on giving gifts, negotiating, handling verbal and non-verbal communications, holding meetings and conducting business in general. We [...] say tuck this into your carry-on bag - the farther you're going, the more you'll need it.
