Timely and Topical
This book details the atmosphere in Japan since the Asian Crash. It contains the most current information (released 1/04/00) on Japanese market conditions. This information has assisted me both in understanding my multinational clients' needs as well as directed me toward the legal advice I need to advocate in entering this market.

Must read
As both a Japanese and an experienced marketer who got the master degree of marketing in the U.S. recently, I do recommend this book for your "must-read." There may have been a lot of books titled such as "Marketing in Japan," and they might have taught you "Bow each other and give your name card when you see Japanese business person at the first time." It's really awkward for Japanese. And I had been very curious why foreign marketers have repeated to fail in Japan's market and why they have misunderstood or overlooked Japan's culture, infrastructure, and fundamentals as a lucrative consumer market. The book will show you the change of Japan as the most important market and the portal to Asia into new era, but will tell you the principle of multicultural marketing that has not changed, as well. The reliable statistics and tips/topics in the book are absolutely terrific to depict the real Japan. It must be helpful for you to know and success in the market.

Tom Potocki <tpotocki@fareastdirect.com>
For 15 years now I have consulted for US companies planning to enter the Japanese market. It has been some time since I read a book this up to date, this exciting, this accessible on the subject of entering the Japanese market in the English language. The main shortcomig of the book is its misleading title: the book is really about the changes in the Japanese market due to the changing consumer demographics and attitudes, regulatory restructuring, and the ongoing revolution in distribution systems; about the recent experiences of US entrants (1994-98) into the market; and the reasons why some succeeded while others failed. The books makes three exellent points: that the Japanese market place is changing dramatically; that foreign companies with the commitment and the resources to enter the market directly can and do make lots of money in Japan almost immediately; and that Japan offers much better profit and growh prospects to American companies than the ephemeral but fashionable emerging markets of SE Asia. The book presents issues of doing business in Japan from the point of view of large, determined, well capitalized companies entering the market through their own directly owned subsidiaries and makes the point that this may be the only fool-proof method to do well in that market. It isnt cheap, but worth its price as a guide and a reference book.

What we are about to live
In this world of changes we must know our next future. This book brings us these informations. Garten handles a torchlight to the future of the world and organizations. It is surprising how he connects the wires and alll we have to do is just follow the line of the words. Undoubtfully is a great book.

Lessons of Globalization!
I am impressed on Garten's and his contributor writers telling MNCs past lessons trying to penetrate into Asia's markets in India and China. I find it interesting especially local companies tried to sort strategies since there are no longer consider as monopoly to counter-attack before they enter the market! This will give local producers to be much more competitive than before. Eventually, they repaired their reputation and efficient production and service than before!MNCs need to worry much especially they don't understand the Asian culture and taste! It may be a suicide mission if MNCs don't study the culture and the background of the country! Although the population in India and China approxed 2.2 billion doesn't mean that it is a 100% peneteration! These may find on Part 1: Emerging Markets and Part 2: Europe and Asia This book is highly recommended to Asian Small-Medium Entrepreneurship and asian big corporate companies as it is important to know how much competitive market as the world trade tariff walls declined! It is undoubtfully an excellent book!

Unique and Abundant Insights
Many organizations are now struggling to formulate global strategies for the New Economy. Garten has assembled sixteen different essays in which various experts identify a number of different strategies to consider and then suggest how such strategies could be implemented. The material is organized within four Parts:

Emerging Markets [eg Prahalad and Lieberthal on "The End of Corporate Imperialism"]

Europe and Asia [eg Williamson on "Asia's New Competitive Game"]

Corporate Strategies [eg Porter on "Clusters and the New Economics of Competition]

Leadership [three interviews: Victor Fung, Robert B. Shapiro, and John Browne]

Garten then provides Executive Summaries and About the Contributors, both sections giving the reader a frame-of-reference within which to evaluate the specific essays and their respective authors. Garten is eminently well-qualified. You are urged to check out another of his books, The Mind of the C.E.O., in which he shares what he learned from interviews with 40 CEOs of major global corporations.

In the Introduction, Garten identifies several "common themes" revealed throughout the sixteen essays: operating in a global market requires CEOs to rethink everything about their strategies -- even what strategy means in an environment which is changing so fast and is so brutally competitive; the best strategies require organizations that are set up for gathering massive amounts of information and processing it effectively; companies that succeed on a global scale are constant innovators; great global companies create a culture conducive to extensive internal and external collaboration; and finally, virtually all of the authors agree that change is brining unprecedented opportunity to capture markets and enhance shareholder value.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from this superb anthology of separate but inter-related essays? Obviously, the governing board members and other senior executives of global organizations (which include but are not limited to for-profits) as well as CEOs of companies which include one or more of the global organizations among their own clients. Also, business students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who seek a single-volume source of information and insight concerning global strategies for the New Economy. (Have you checked out the price of textbooks lately?) For those in need of additional sources, Garten provides an abundance of them in the "About the Contributors" section.

Those who share my high regard for this book should also check out Dun & Bradstreet's Guide to Doing Business Around the World (Morrison et al) and also, if relevant, Doing Business in Asia (Dunung) and/or The New Silk Road (Stuttard's observations on doing business in China). Having accurate and sufficient information is obviously very important but without an appropriate strategy, information cannot be effectively leveraged. Hence the importance of the diverse and abundant wisdom which is so readily available in this book.

Learn by laughing
If this is the book I think it is, first published in the 80's, it is the only business book that has ever made me laugh out loud. Over and over again.

Don't be put off -- it _is_ a serious business book, and it treats the issues in a systematic fashion. But it is well-written, too, and the examples the author uses to make his points will have you chuckling.

This is a MUST read for all busines students
All business students should read this book. It is absolutely amazing to find out what people have already gone through to bring a business international.

Does your CEO have the audacity to believe that he will not make the same mistakes that others made? Is your marketing team prepared for each and every market? This book teaches you to carefully prepare for each and every market and not take ANYTHING for granted. Do your research, or you will be the punchline of an joke or two at some International Marketing conferences somewhere in the future.

Dave Ricks lays out everyone else's blunders in such a way that you wonder if they could have really happened. Although it is sad that these mistakes happened, the message is that without preparation people make big mistakes in international business. These major business mistakes could happen to anybody (who does not know to avoid them.)

If you are looking for anectdotes for a business class or international business curriculum, you can save yourself the trouble of research and find out what Mr. Ricks has painstakingly already researched.

Although there is no way to find out what to avoid in every market... today's business students should buy this book and read it often so they can recognize when they need help avoiding the pitfals in today's increasingly global business world.

As a biingual international manager of an import/export firm I see many of these blunders cropping up everyday. Some companies are better prepared to handle them before they become broadcast over teh whole world. Many Mexican companies I have seen do not know their translation takes on a funny twist in English. But if I told them would they believe me?... I hope reading this book will make me realize I need help myself sometimes too.

Well done ayse oge !
Ayse Oge took a very complex subject feared by many of us, subdivided into smaller elements and prepared a handy guide. This guide is the product of her extensive experience in this field that she has acquired by working in different global organizations. She has also done long and tedious research and interviews on the subject. The guide also contains handy forms to evaluate your company's potential global success and a long list of usefull references. Congratulations for a very well done guide ,Ayse Oge !

Go Global to Win by Ayshe Oge
"Go Global to Win" by Ayse Oge contains many invaluable tips for any business owner planning to take his or her business into the global market, set in a logical and concise framework. Ideas are presented and expanded upon, and then summarized in one or two sentences. There are sections dealing with types of businesses; use of the Internet as a resource; and discussions of several agencies that aid businesses that are trying to go international, as well as some private institutions and international organizations that do the same. The author identifies six "ingredients" for a successful business: quality (necessary for any business); employee empowerment; teamwork; customer satisfaction (again necessary for any business); innovation; and leadership. The author's ideas on employee empowerment are interesting; many companies ignore ideas and suggetions from employees, regarding them at best as inexperienced--often to their own detriment. Regular "brainstorming" sessions with all members of the company are advised. Entrepeneurs who want to get into the global market are advised to be sensitive to cultural differences--e.g. selling beef burgers in India where cows are sacred, is a no-no. There are chapters devoted to the exact methods needed to get into the international market--and on how to collect the money due. The book ends with a questionnaire for business owners planning to go into global marketing that will set them up for international commerce.

invaluable resource
This is a charming poetry anthology. Although it has the flavor of another era, it is an excellent collection of Black(African American) poetry for younger (pre-k thru 3rd) children. It has examples of poetry from different sources, including traditional songs and spirituals, which may be hard to find. It has many poems from various African-American poets etc. The poems selected are excellent, and well-suited for children. It can be used as a cultural resource for many purposes.

Read When I was a Kid
I've been looking for this book for a couple of years. My grandmother used to read this to my brothers and sisters and I when I was very young. It is a shame that it is no longer in print. This is a very insightful book of poetry. It tells the story of Blacks in the early days. The sad part is.....not much has changed in society in all of that time. This is a treasure and a must have in any library.

The bible for international technical communications.
Our consulting staff has recommended this valuable publication to many of our clients over the years. It provides a step-by-step process for creating effective international technical documents in electronic, printed, graphic and verbal formats. It is easy to understand and use. Communicating technical information worldwide is critically important to the success or failure of any international marketing program. Securing this book is wise business investment. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute

A textbook for the localization professional
More than a writer's guide, though it provides that service admirably. Hoft covers the entire localization process, with model projects that include essential milestones (reviewer signoff on terminology) and costing guidelines. She provides a solid discussion of the potential cultural hazards of hasty localization, far beyond the facile "Don't use white in China, 'cuz they associate it with death!!!" layer. And Appendix C, the Resources list, is worth the price of the book.

If I were going to assign a single book to every project manager, marketing manager, and documentation developer involved in global marketing, this would be it.

Clear exposition - a good text
This book can be used in the international trade component of a two-semester ug course in international trade and finance (as the editorial review points).

The book uses - at least for me - an extremely useful approach to studying the rudiments of trade theory: after reviewing the standard concepts from consumer and producer theory, it provides a set of sufficient conditions that jointly determine the no-trade world. The core of the text then relaxes each of the mentioned conditions while keeping the others valid, showing why trade arises and at the same time providing a very clear overall picture. All models are discussed in a non-technical way but still with a fair amount of rigour, clearly stating the assumptions and proving the propositions.

The idea of using the revealed preference to show the existence of gains from trade in various settings is defenitely sth worth examining.

The trade policy part offers a chapter on strategic trade policy to shake the validity of the standard "trade barriers are harmful" belief from a perpective that is usually not presented by competitive texts.

Still, two elements could be improved: the part on the link between trade and economic growth is not very readable. Maybe the authors could do sth more about it by using algebra. Secondly, although the concept of intra-industry trade is discussed on many occasions, the authors could consider devoting an additional chapter to it just to summarise the already mentioned ideas.

To conclude: I consider the book as being better than, say, Krugman's or Salvatore's probably more popular texts.

great text!
We used this as a textbook for a one semester course in international trade relations. The writing is clear and the book is well-organized, making it very readable. It has very few errors, perhaps that's why a new edition hasn't come out lately. Most of the analyses of the models are done graphically and using only algebra, so it is suited for beginners of international trade theory/international economics. The questions at the end of each chapter vary from very easy to difficult, but the difficult ones can be answered after reading the text about two or three times and digesting its contents. This book is aimed primarily for undergraduates but first year graduate students can use this book as a review for more advanced texts in international trade such as "Lectures in International Trade",(1998) by Bhagwati et al. This textbook is highly-recommended and could be a better alternative than Krugman and Obstfeld's popular text ("International Economics: Theory and Policy").

good for undergrad...
This provides different kinds of examples as well as theories. It no doubt helps students learn about the real world. Particularly, the chapter on tariff policy is good enough to have a good grasp of the field.

A good book to study
I've found this book easy to follow, even if I'm not very good at Economics. Simple, with many examples and graphs. Case studies and good bibliography at the end of each chapter.

Best Book in the field
The book really brings an in depth analysis of the modern financial world, through a very simple and easy to access method of presentation. Good for students, interesting for any other reader...

Everlasting Love - Tragedy
Well, first of all I have to say this book is incredible. You start reading it and can not put it down till your done. The only little thing - which bothered me the most - was the loss at the end. They found this incredible love just to lose it. I'm not the easy crying kind, but this left you with so much raw emotions it was unbeliveble. It's like I said at the start - incredible.

Taboo leaves a haunting thought on love..
Although the plot needs a few details to enhance its credibility, the entire story is beautifully presented to its finale - love that is so painfully beautiful that it is a sin to love as much. It leaves a slightly disturbing view of what is left of us when loves consumes so much of us that there is little left when it's gone. This is the kind of love many of love yearn for in love, willing to exchange to have it. Life may very well be the price to pay to have it. This is all states beautifully with the quote: "When love comes, you plunge without thinking. You see that your life was an empty shell before love came, so you turn your back on the past without a second thought. And then, when the world comes back to claim its own, there's no way to fight it, because you have no heart to endure loneliness anymore. You've thrown it away, like a child throwing away a paper toy." Again, Gage has written something of a fiction that is a little beyond just a story.. always nice to have something to think about after reading a book.

My fav book ever!
Well, what can I say? If you like Jackie Collins.. read this! It's even better. It's got twists and turns and every time you think you know what's going to happen...BOOM! She shocks you w/another twist. This is my favorite book and I highly recommend it!
