Mike Peng sure knows how to express his ideas clearly and effectively. In addition, he grabs the reader's attention and doesn't let go by coming up with exciting topic after exciting topic. This is definitely a great piece of work for anyone that wants a deeper look into the effects of globalization and the United States economy. I highly recommend it.

Good book, very well written. As the writer explains, he described this business like "it is". He did a great job at covering the ins and outs of the business in great detail. Excellent for someone new to this that is trying to find out whether this is a suitable business idea or not.

Great Technical manual on how to do Import/Export
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-26
Found this one to be well done, but a little more technical than I prefer. This book does include just about every bit of info you will need, from forms to products to making the right overseas and domestic connections. Also look at Import/Export: How to Get Started in International Trade.

Baby steps

This book is fine for the very early entrepreneur. There is an entire chapter on choosing between forms of organization, buying office supplies and creating a logo. It's a good birds-eye-view of the import/export process, however, if you are a professional seeking insights and business solutions, you will not find many new ideas here.

A good book to understand what everybody else is doing

Review Date: 2006-10-01
Well, where do I start? This book is useful to understand what every small time operator is doing in this business. You don't want to follow the crowd so I suggest you purchase this book and John Weiley Spiers Book "How Small Business Trades Worldwide". If you follow the techniques outlined by Weiss you're wasting your time, taking on too much risk, and making very little profits. I'm not saying you can't do it, for example, using trade bulletins to find buyers but so is everybody else! This is not an easy business if you do it this way. No real mention of the internet is made to make it useful nor does he focus too much on the marketing aspects which is the most important. Again, there are ways, and very few of them, to make some big profits. In a strange way, I am recommending this book so you understand what everybody else is doing to get into this business, and hopefully you don't follow. If someone is starting off in their own business, I highly recommend you start out as a Manufacturers representative and branch out as an importer/exporter as part of the overall business. [...]

I thought Mr. Nelson did a wonderful job covering the myriad topics involving Importing / Exporting. He did a WONDERFUL job covering the topic of "How to Obtain Financing"! I never knew there were sooo many sources out there to help. He also did a GREAT job covering and diagramming banking processes like Bankers Acceptances.

I could not believe some of the bad reviews--- did those people read the same book??!! No one person is going to be a panacia for any topic--- but Mr. Nelson comes close! Hats off to him for all the effort, research, and expereice that went into this book..........

I ordered this book knowing absolutely nothing about import/export. This book is great for novices. It does a fine job explaining the many facets of import and export. However, before attempting to start your own import/export business, you will need to do a lot more research. This book attempts to cover a great deal of info in just a few pages. Nelson's book is a great place to start your quest for import/export knowledge.

It has alot of info and facts. But doesn't help you make any decisions. Read: "The Maui CEO" by John Tennant instead.

This is a great starting point. The subject of import/export can be very complex, but this book is simple right to the core. Yes there are some lame jokes, but the information is solid and the book well researched, and is full of all the information you need to understand this area of business. The book makes for light and entertaining reading while you learn the core fundamentals, from there you are in a great position t move onto more advanced books on the subject. Recommended.

The authors of this book could not make up their minds "should this be a joke or serious book" their choice was to make serious subjects into a joke and thus made a truly worthless book. It got to the point where I was so upset at having to read 6th grade jokes (sorry 6th graders, you are probably much more clever) that any information was lost. You can learn as more about the import/export business by going to the store and reading shipping labels.

Why isn't there an author attached to this book? Just editors from this quick buck series. Do they have experience starting a import/export business? You can probably find everything in this book from google. Save your money.

I love the Entreprenuer's web site and magazine so I snapped this book up. It's really a fireside reading and doesn't go into detailed action steps. You are better off going on the government's import export web site: http://www.itds.treas.gov/index.html

I am surprised by all the other negative reviews. THis is a good book on the basics of importing. It is a little general, and some is a little out of date. Good ideas, and a good start. I copied the cover so I could read some of the publishers other titles. I liked it. I also recommend Nelson, Zodl, and Weiss' books. THose are more specific with details.

This book might be nice for a pre-kindergarten reading level and someone that has absolutely no serious interest in starting an import/export business, for the others i recommend not purchasing this crap. This book will only anger you when it defines importing as follows "Importing is, basically, the opposite of exporting..." Ya don't say!? I'm still searching for another import/export book worth a flip, so far i've found my best information from digging through the U.S. customs website, better luck to the rest of ya.

The title of the book should be along the lines of starting a small business. Maybe the wrong jacket was put on it during publishing!

Totally useless. Several hours of your life you can never get back.

There is nothing in this book about importing or exporting. It is about starting a business in general and is full of information you could obtain in one average business magazine. Total waste of time.

This book should prove to be of no help to anyone. The technology recommendations are completely out of date and there is little information on Importing/Exporting. I found it a waste of time.

this was somewhat of a disappointment. i ordered through entrepreneur magazine, and the shipped product did not seem like the same thing i read about in their magazine. i was going to photocopy it and return for a refund, but the book was so awful i forgot i had it until after the return expiration date. althoug the book is somewhat helpful, the information (especially the info regarding the type of computer needed for office) was extremely outdates. i bought this in the summer of 1999, and it mentioned something about buying a 386 computer with an 8800 bps modem. i would pass on this, and stick to the more informative and less expensive selections available in the site. many of the pages seem like photocopies or even black and white printouts from an old laser printer, the folder accompaning the information is nothing special either.
