Oh my gosh...This is the most difficult work of Hamilton's I have read to date to get started in. Up front, I have not finished the works yet.

Absolutely loved Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. Read them twice, a year apart and even got my wife to read them. She is not a science fiction fan, and found the science a little overwhelming and underwhelming, that is, she likes a good story without the technical jargon which threatened to derail her read of them. Ultimately, she stuck it out, got the characters straight, and fell into the story, hook, line, and sinker.

I would not expect her to stick it out through the first quarter of this two part saga.

On the otherhand, now that I have, I am just as thrilled to pick it up, again and again, as I was with PS and JU.

This just hits me as the most enthralling SF I have ever read, and I have shelves of the stuff. I have found that I don't care much for short reads, I just can't sink my teeth into them. Hamilton's Space Operas will keep you entertained for weeks, if not months, (relative to life style).

If you buy this work, and find you are having some level of difficulty staying with the first two hundred pages, I feel confident saying that your efforts will be well rewarded as you read the next 600.

An amazing grab-bag of a book. 4.7 stars

____________________________________________
This is an amazing grab-bag of a book. Written in multi-viewpoint
best-seller style, it features Adamists & Edenists (think Mechanist-
Shaper Lite), sentient bitek starships & habitats, prisoners transported
to primitive worlds, Secrets of the Ancients in the Ruin Ring, a
young and very sexy Lord of Ruin, a Stephen King twist for the
villains... what have I missed? The electrically-powered sidewheel
paddleboats? The Star Kingdom of Kulu? There aren't many
features of modern big-scale space opera that aren't stuck in
here somewhere. I'm not even going to try for a plot summary,
beyond that the civilized universe is in danger from Terrifying
Ancient Mysteries. I should warn you that the ending of Part 1 (of 3) [1] is
abrupt; this isn't a stand-alone book.

RD is written in a cozy British style that sometimes grated a bit on
these American eyes, and the sprawling, multi-threaded story line
lost me once or twice, but none of this really matters - if you like Big
space opera, you'll love "The Reality Dysfunction".

Relational psychoanalysis - the new paradigm
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-15
Since Stephen Mitchells untimely death in Dec, 2000, relational psychoanalysis for a historical second hesitated where to turn to. But now it came clear: best theorists and clinical experts contributed to this second volume on classical papers about relational psychoanalysis which had been promoted so vividly by Steve Mitchell. After psychoanalysis has paradigmatically been centered around drive, followed by ego, self and object, it's entire core emerges here and you can follow the subtle lines of thinking in theoretical details. It's core is relational and understanding the kind of relationship you are engaged in. So you find in this volume a careful selected blend of classical papers presenting the new understanding of treatment topics as holding another mind in mind, of theory of conflict, new look on emotion, dimensions of communication, relatedness in supervision or even in perversion. New insights are really available. For all interested in modern psychoanalytic developments of treatment and highly sophisticated theorizing this reading is a must.

Relationists Rule!

This is a terrific book. Not only is it easy to absorb, but it is downright absorbing! There is much to be said about new excavations in the world of psychoanalysis, and this book details explorations into the prosaic as well as the bizarre. The structure, ie, the editors' comments first, the chapter, and then the afterword, all serve to put the content into perspective for the reader. As a lay learner, I highly recommend this book to students of mind studies, as well as to all persons interested in understanding more about their own psychology. Move over classicists! The emergence of this new tradition is one that will be here to stay. Relationists rule!

This add-on for Munchkins (#4) adds steeds and more henchmen (especially non-human henchmen). My kids and I (ages 9-11) played it after Christmas and found it to be a blast. The game time is still around 60 minutes even with the additions, so don't think that the game is really sped up with this pack. Good purchase nevertheless. We really enjoy it! Saving up for #5 now.

Best add on pack yet!

This add-on definitely improves the original Munchkin! It contains sidekicks like an elf sidekick and dwarf sidekick who can use race-specific items and take some devices off your hands (literally!). It also has modifiers like High and Dark (high elf, dark wizard...) which can be used ALONG WITH race cards (dark characters gain a level when bad stuff happens to other characters, which adds a fun dimension). The other notable addition is the steeds, "items" which you can ride for as much as a +5 bonus with the all-powerful Dragon Steed. There's the perpetually terrified Chicken Steed, 9-Lived Tiger Steed, Giant Mutant Gerbil, and plenty of others. Plus, all the cards have that brilliant Munchkin humor. Since this repairs the race and hand restrictions in original Munchkin, I'd definitely suggest getting this one, even if it's the only add-on pack you collect!

I second the review of the other reviewer on here. This is the best board game ever made and its a collectors item now. I wish I had the whole set of expansions. On ebay now they're going for about 50 dollars per expansion and sets for over 300. I had a friend back in my teens who had all of them and he sold them all for 25 dollars. If only I'd had the presence of mind to get it then. Great game. If you see it at a yard sale or something, get it.

While analyzing the geography of a country and the influences on its history is not a novel concept (Richard Pipes has a fascinating first chapter in Russia under the Old Regime detailing that), I found Sunderland's approach to be original and provocative through its complexity. He focuses on just one geographic form, namely the Russian steppe, and builds his argument brilliantly: in his view, the intellectuals and political officials of the 18th and 19th centuries transformed Russia, through the colonization of its wide steppe, from a nation initially viewed as barbaric, with vast lands of wilderness, to a serious European player. The steppe certainly is for Sunderland not an arbitrary choice, but rather serves as metaphor for the wide, agriculturally challenging unknown.

Perhaps the most useful idea for me to take away from this book was the clear distinction between imperialism and colonialism that the author makes. Too often these two terms are being used interchangeably, and yet they are not at all synonyms. Unlike imperialism, which suggests complete subordination of new territories, colonialism suggests transfers of population, allowing them, however, to continue to exercise their political loyalties to their original country. In that regard, I considered the most illustrative description of that specific distinction to be made as part of the chapter detailing the changes implemented during the reign of Catherine II. Arguably an "enlightened despot," the empress "opened the gates" to the steppe with almost no restrictions whatsoever. People's preferences and aspirations were very little important in the official view compared to the sheer desire to populate those lands.

One cannot satisfy all questions in such an already vast undertaking, but still I do have at least two curiosities. First, especially since Sunderland links so much of his comparisons to the American wild west, I would have liked to know in further detail whether captives like the ones from the famous Pugachev rising were exiled throughout the steppe lands. Secondly, and possibly more importantly, I would have enjoyed learning about the tensions amongst the various ethnic groups that populated the steppe. I cannot imagine that did not exist, especially since it seems there was no coherent plan implemented as part of the colonization process, so such occurrence almost seems inevitable.

The great nineteenth-century historian Kliuchevsky observed that colonization was the basic fact of Russian history. In "Taming the Wild Field," Willard Sunderland has offered readers one of the best books on this crucial aspect of Russia's past. Based on years of research--much of it in overlooked Russian archives--rich with insight, and written with rare elegance, "Taming the Wild Field" should be read by everyone interested in the "big questions" of Russian history.

William Henry Jackson was born in 1943 and lived until 1942. His life spanned the pony express to the railroad to the car...he was a good friend of Henry Ford, another Detroit resident, and he lived to see planes and other modern conveyances. He wrote in his diary every day and this made writing his autobiography easy at 90, when he also began doing watercolors from his photos. Many of his items can be seen at the museum in Scott's Bluff, Nebraska. He was at the battle of Gettysburg and was buried in Arlington Cometary. He ate bird nest's soup with the emperor of Japan, dog sledded across Siberia, and walked across Korea. Many of these exploits were written up in Harpers Magazine. After leaving the Hayden expedition as photographer he set up a portrait studio in Colorado. Many of his line drawings and photographs grace the pages of his autobiography.

Having read numerous books and articles about Wyatt Earp, Tombstone and the Gunfight behind the O.K. Corral, I agree with the author that Virgil Earp deserves much more historical recognition than he has been given. This book is an easy read and provides an excellent biographical history of the Earp family leading up to the Tombstone years. It also presents strong evidence that Virgil, not Wyatt, was viewed by his contemporaries as the chief law enforcement officer during those turbulant times. His life did not end after Tombstone and the book provides a much needed glimpse into the final years of this often forgotten lawman.

Best-written book about Virgil Earp!

This is a very well researched and loving look at a very mediocre at best expansion team. During baseball's expansions of the 1960's, teams were doomed to years of frustration. This didn't stop fan's from loving their teams. JIm Heartley is obviously a very devoted fan. Season by season accounts, player interviews, and a well done statistical index make this a very worthwhile book for both reference and fun. If you ever had the pleasure of seeing Frank Howard hit one into the upper deck at DC / RFK stadium, you will enjoy this book tremendously. Let's hope Washington will soon field another big league team.

The standard central goal for a player of STCCG is to obtain 100 points, primarily by completing missions or objectives. This is done by bringing personnel, ships and equipment into play, then moving an attempting team to a mission. Once a mission attempt starts, the personnel will create away teams to encounter dilemmas which will challenge them in some way. Often if the personnel have the required skills or attributes they can overcome certain dilemmas' effects. Once the required dilemmas are passed, the personnel still active in the attempt must have the skills and/or attribute totals required by the mission to solve it. If the mission is solved, the player earns the printed points.

Other aspects of the game increase player interactions: ships and personnel can battle, or otherwise affect each other; cards like events and interrupts can alter the environment for one or more players; and points can be scored using methods other than mission solving.

One of the most attractive themes of the game is the differences between affiliations. These are groupings of ships and personnel based on the major interstellar powers of the Star Trek universe, and most decks will be based around one, or perhaps two, of these groups though first edition in particular allows the use of many powers.
