This brilliant collection of essays by Eugene D. Genovese and Elizabeth Fox-Genovese covers numerous aspects of the spread
of merchant capitalism in the colonial period of American history. They see the American experiment as begun in dread of modernity
and as part and parcel of the most extreme early capitalist reactionary movements in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Far from intending to provide the cutting edge of historical development, many of the early colonists were trying to recreate
a reactionary paradise before the Fall they saw occurring in European society.

This large coffee table book tells the history of one of our great national monuments. Compiled by respected Arch expert,
National Park Service historian Robert J. Moore, Jr. (NOT "Robert Jefferson" as indicated), this book is filled with remarkable
photos of the monument that few people have seen, along with text by various authors sharing an important history that every
American should know. It is an amazing story of overcoming countless obstacles to build the largest stainless steel structure
in history... A lasting international symbol of the westward expansion of the United States.

Ever heard of Isla de Margarita?

We tend to believe that WW I was an European subject with an European scope. And WW II was an European subject with worlwide
scope. But the idea of the German Empire was not buried in the middle ages. Germans made blockades on american ports as
late as early this century, and were willing to obtain a base in the caribbean (Isla de Margarita). The term Weltpolitik
is not new to germans. This book makes us think on the thin layers of imperialistic thought that led to the Nazi nightmare.

Tate and Vallinder's book is already recognized for being one of the first published studies - or collection of studies -
on the topic of the judicialization of politics. And it deserves really the credit of being not just a pioneer, but also and
most importantly a classic. A must-read for anyone concerned with the otherwise understated "Third Power", specially outside
the U.S.

I've read some of the book, when the book first came out online, the author had a few of the prose and poetry for the buyers
to view and I have to tell you, they are great. Like he says "One word means many and time after time of reading the prose
and poetry, one can begin to understand whats real and whats REAL."
YOU WONT REGRET BUYING IT. TRY IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT. I AM.
TO THE AUTHOR "GREAT JOB WELL DONE"

This book with drawings, extraordinary artwork, and actual photographs is at a simple text level geared to mid-elementary
level. The teacher may want to use a segment from the book for English language learners and older elementary students, for
example, to supplement teaching about US history. The book will provide impetus to discuss history and the role of women,
including famous American women (e.g., Sacagawea, Annie Oakley, and Carry Nation). The book provides information about Native
Americans, Spanish, African-American women. This book is one of the "We the People" series.

WITH ITS RE-WRITING OF THE ORIGINS OF ENVIRONMENTALISM, THIS BOOK IS PROBABLY THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BOOK PUBLISHED IN ENVIRONMENTAL
HISTORY IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. I FELT IT COMPARED WELL WITH SIMON SCHAMA'S LANDSCAPE AND MEMORY IN HELPING US TO UNDERSTAND
THE EVOLUTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN. IN PARTICULAR THE NOTION THAT ENVIRONMENTALISM BEGAN ON FRENCH OCEANIC ISLAND COLONIES,
ESPECIALLY ON MAURITIUS, IS A REVOLUTIONARY ONE.

Spectral theory for the heat equation represents one of the
more exciting points of interaction between math and physics:
It also serves as a deep link, via spectral theory, between geometry(math), and quantum gravity(physics). While the subject has roots far back, this lovely book presents some of the more exciting developments in the past decade. One of the success stories in interdisciplinary theoretical science! It is well written, and will be a great source for grad students. This very nice book further points toward the research trends of the future. Moreover, the results presented in the book are timeless. The book will be of value also ten years from now. Being an acknowledged authority in the subject, this author is in a unique position to write a book on the central themes and theories in the subject.

The "GREATEST" OF THE "GREAT"

Review Date: 2006-02-09
Alexander the Great, was born on or around July 20, 356 B.C.E., and is my favorite personality to read about in history. To
me he is the whole package general, statesman, conqueror, and philosopher. The smartest man who ever lived, Aristotle, tutored
him. Alexander conquered more of the known world than any other figure in history, accomplishing all this before he dies at
the ripe old age of 33. Some people called him conqueror and violent overlord. Some other called him civilizer and even God!
All of them yet, called him "The Great". He was the first man in modern history that took this name, "The Great"! Even as
a young boy, he shows great promise.
Curtius' work is the oldest extant work available and based on eyewitness accounts. He does a better job than most in explaining the battle scenes, and seems to be more balanced in his admiration and criticism of Alexander then any of the other early biographers. I love his Bucephalus Story, and I recount it here so you get a flavor of the promise this young Alexander shows.
The legend begins with Philoneicus, a Thessalian, bringing a wild horse to Philip for him to buy. None of the hands was able to handle it, and Philip grew upset at Philoneicus for bringing such an unstable horse to him. Alexander, however, publicly defied his father and claimed that he could handle the horse. The bet between Philip and Alexander was that if Alexander could ride the horse, Philip would buy it, if not, Alexander would have to pay the price of the horse, which was 13 talents, an enormous sum for a boy of Alexander's age to have.
Alexander apparently noticed that the horse had been shying away from its own shadow, and so he led it gently into the sun, so that its shadow was behind it, all the while stroking it gently and whispering into its ear, (Alexander seems to be the original horse whisperer). Eventually the horse let Alexander mount him, and Alexander was able to show his equestrian skill to his father and all who were watching. The incident so impressed Alexander's father, King Philip that he told the boy "Look thee out a kingdom equal to and worthy of you, for Macedonia is too little for thee". He named the horse Bucephalus, which means Ox head, and rode it across Asia, founding a city in its honor in India after its death. This story gives you an inkling about the man.
This book is a must read for students of Alexander, I also recommend Plutarch's and Arrian's work. Contemporary writers, J.F. C. Fuller and Tarn. Most of Alexander's greatest military traits are in the area of military logistics and to understand his genius in this area I highly recommend reading, "Alexander the Great and the Logistics of the Macedonian Army," by Donald W. Engels.
As a retired U. S. Army Major, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in ancient warfare, and history.
