Spinning scenarios "out of the air" is not quite the same thing as examining critically the key decision points of alternative military situations. After all, in the introduction, they accuse Hitler of being a mindless military fool, which he may well have been, but no one would be able to discern that from this book.

That is because these authors proceed here in the same mindless way: with untested and apparently un-testable assumptions about critical battles and decision points of WW-II that are spun, out of thin air, free-standing from even a hypothetical context, giving them an undeserved air of authenticity simply by successfully hiding them behind carefully scripted military language, sophisticated looking battle formation charts, and order of battle equipment lists?

By my way of thinking, this is not decision making, even in the theoretical and hypothetical sense, far from it in fact. It is more like playing with toy soldiers on the living room floor. Better to have discussed first the psychological and decision-making context and their hypothetical implications first, and then later introduce military forces into the equation as they apply. At least there the all-important and most vital connective tissue of such scenario spinning would have been included rather than just the ultimately irrelevant clash of "imaginary forces."

But even better would have been to carry out what I was expecting: a full scale "comparative analysis" in which the actual decisions taken during the war are "played out" and compared to the authors' own hypothetical ones. Otherwise, the reader is left to accept all of this military gobble-de-goop, and confetti, on faith. This is a huge pill to swallow, and obviously did not go down well with this reader.

Given such fine books on "What If History such as Robert Cowley's "The Collected What IF?, which takes exactly the opposite approach as that taken here, one wonders what these authors really had in mind? I was bowled over by their sophisticated charts and graphs, but instead was very disappointed in this "cover story presented as serious military analysis" approach.

A genuine one star effort18536719245362003-02-13if onlyIf only Hitler had been less orthodox in his military thinking, he might have made some of these decisions, instead of sticking to the bully boy political game of intimidation and blunt use of brutal force that were the hallmark of his bloody career.
In this book we some have well thought out scenerios for what might have been, and their immediate consequences both good and bad.
This book is a good pick for those who wish to look at how the decision making process works when it comes to war. Because history is not just what happened and how it happened, but all the options of what might have happened if different decisions had been made or other factors had come into play.1853671924410102002-04-24One of the Better One'sI have read a few other books that are along this same line of "What if" and I must say that this book has been the most enjoyable. The author / editor (in this case) has asked 10 military historians to work with him to take 10 parts of the war and work out what would have happened if some decisions by either the Axis or the Allies would have been different. The author gives us a good overview of the overall situation in he war at the time of the decision, and a very good case as to what would have happened if just one or two key decisions were different. This is a different handling of the subject then others have done, the normal for this type of book is to just take decisions that were made and completely change them for no regard for if that was even possible. Almost fitting the decision in so that the author can put together a nice fiction story.
What is so interesting is that this could have happened and in some cases almost did happen. The authors use the same players that were involved, the same weapons and resources. It is all put together in a very organized and believable way. The historical detail is well chosen and comprehensive, if you are a general reader this may be a bit much, but then again you probably would not pick this book up. The most interesting parts for me were the invasion of the UK, the changes to the Russian campaign and the change in the D-Day landing location. The author did a good job of completing out the scenarios to what very well may have happened. This is a well written and thought out book that is enjoyable and exciting to read.1853671924513132001-08-15We are Manacled to a CorpsePardon the cryptic title but I simply loved this phrase, proposed in one of the "alternate history" scenarios - supposedly the words an OKW General would use to persuade Adolf that German's alliance with Italy was more of a liability than an asset. This collection of speculative history essays verges from the mischevious to the eery. Could the "Southern Front" have rolled up the war one year earlier? What would the LAND Battle of Britain have looked like? There are maps. What if General Franco had joined the Axis? (Gibraltar would be lost, the pundits say, but then Britain would have wiped out the Spanish fleet and occupied the Balaeric Islands.) A fine, engaging work for anyone who enjoys pondering what might have been.1853671924512172000-06-07Several Plausible Cases For The Fuhrer's VictoryAnyone who has studied World War Two no doubt knows just how close Hitler came to achieving his dream of world dominance. 'The Hitler Options' presents in detail how radically different the war could have turned out had Hitler or the Allies made alternate choices in the prosecution of the war. The questions that are posed are: What if the Moscow offensive succeeded? What if operation Sealion had taken place as planned? What if Churchill's fears about the U-boat menace were realized? This is truly a captivating look at what might have been.
Ten scenarios that might have changed the course of the war Detailed examinations by ten leading military historians Now for the first time in paperback A thought-provoking study of what might have been. British Army Review In this compelling book, ten internationally acclaimed military authors present the greatest maybes of World War II. Based on crucial turning points of the war, these dramatic possibilities develop from choices Hitler could realistically have made; they fall well within the bounds of what might actually have occurred, and are projected only from factual situations and the options available. Real people behave in character, and projected technological innovations are all plausible. The resulting scenarios will grip the reader and graphically illustrate the role of chance in history, showing how major consequences can result from minor changes in the course of events.
1853676993Hitler Triumphant: Alternate Decisions of World War II1853676039Disaster at D-Day: The Germans Defeat the Allies,June 1944 (Greenhill Military Paperbacks)0962832464If Hitler Had Won: The Plans He Made, The Plans He Carried Out, The Plans He Hoped To Achieve0609808443How Hitler Could Have Won World War II: The Fatal Errors That Led to Nazi Defeat1853676748Moscow Option: An Alternative Second World War465200General4954Germany4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books713311011General AAS4954Germany4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books4953General4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books713308011General AAS4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books5020Strategy5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books465308General5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713322011General AAS5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books5014General5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713316011General AAS5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713290011General AAS9History1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1853673889http://www.amazon.com/Napoleon-Options-Alternate-Decisions-Napoleonic/dp/1853673889%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D1853673889625113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51CG2JVPWGL._SL75_.jpg7549http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51CG2JVPWGL._SL160_.jpg160105http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51CG2JVPWGL.jpg475312HardcoverJonathan North940.279781853673887921853673889EnglishEnglishEnglish9563495USD$34.95Greenhill Books1221Book2000-04Greenhill BooksGreenhill BooksThe Napoleon Options: Alternate Decisions of the Napoleonic Wars (Greenhill Historic Series)1146421109USD$11.09495USD$4.953495USD$34.95101110003.53118536738892002007-06-14Options other than Napoleon's defeat. This was a hard book to read. I don't read much alternative history, simply because it is not true. I enjoy the academic debate of what might have happened if things were done differently. In this book, ten distinguished historians change some facts and show how things could have gone differently for Napoleon. Some of them are OK to read. The large majority have changed the scenario so completely that it is simply fiction. That is why I didn't like reading this book. It also may have been the reason for it being on the discount shelf.

I am not sure of other alternative history for the Napoleonic era. However, readers could probably pick a better book from the thousands on Napoleon.18536738894342002-02-09Easy ReadingA nice collection of alternate realities where often the key factor lies in the after effects of a changed descision. Some of the chapters are better than others. The best ones are the ones which run closest to what actually happened with the smallest change amending the course of history Hofschroer,Elting,Haythornwaite,Gallagher,Elting all fitting nicely within this with strong possibilities the weakest in my opinion was Uffindell's who wrote a nice story but then ruined it by calmly stating that the campaign was a foregone conclusion and Napoleon would never have won. Read the other 2 two waterloo accounts and make your own mind up on this.
It was also enjoyable, after reading, to work out any other obvious 'changes' that could have changed history at Waterloo d'Erlon not being recalled and hence winning Ligny - all it needed was one order to arrive with Ney before he lost his temper at the second or Bourmont not defecting and hence Ligny starting 3 hours earlier. Junot in Russia blocking the Russian retreat etc etc.
All in all enjoyable and a mind opening book18536738895992000-07-19If Only That Division Had Rallied After Waterloo...I am not normally a fan of 'what if' historical books. I'll make an exception for this volume. Jonathan North has done a superb job here assembling ten reputable Napoleonic scholars, including himself, to write chapters on alternate solutions to episodes in the Napoleonic Wars.
Ranging from the Revolutionary period to the denouement at Waterloo, which gets three chapters on its own, including the last one by noted authority Colonel John Elting, which is my favorite, the authors give viable, believable alternate solutions to important, decisive Napoleonic events.
The contributors include Peter Hofschroer, Digby Smith, Jack Gill, and Paddy Griffith, as well as four other reputable Napleonic scholars, and all of these historians have contributed mightily to this little gem of a volume.
John Elting's is indeed the finest of the lot. He tells in graphic, realistically gritty prose of the rallying of the 7th Infantry Division at Quatre Bras by Napoleon after Waterloo, introducing two characters, tough little Captain Merle, and tall, wiry, experienced, and feral-eyed Sergeant Gros-Noir, both of the venerable 1st Hussars, all of whom combine to ambush Gneisenau's amateurish pursuit after Waterloo, capturing Gneienau himself. The ambush succeeds, Blucher is ridden down in Genappe by Merle's scratch squadron, while Gros-Noir, with a 'volunteer' Belgian guide, sows hate and discontent in the allied rear areas. Grouchy is on the march and at grips with the Prussians, and then comes the rumor that the terrible, greatly feared Davout is marching north...Ah, if only...
This is an excellent volume that does add to our knowledge of the period, as most of each chapter is at least somewhat factual. If not, it does give us plausible alternate solutions, and in the case of Col Elting's chapter, what Napoleon's 'old sweats' were like. Jonathan North has done us all a great service.30 illustrations 5 maps 6 x 9
* Contributions by leading military historians
* Gripping narratives of ten alternate scenarios
* A vital addition to this popular genre
This compelling alternate history, brilliantly written by ten leading international authors, presents the great maybes of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The Napoleon Options focuses on some of the pivotal episodes of those catastrophic wars, gives them a historical twist and explores in detail an alternate sequence of historical events. Rooted firmly in reality, and projected from entirely factual events, these dramatic possibilities are played out as though they actually happened in vivid and dramatic narratives.
As the Napoleonic conflict had such an impact on the formation of the modern world, these captivating scenarios colorfully illustrate how alternate events might well have shaped a radically different world. This is a book in point. I can see no earthly purpose that this book serves. The premise is what might have happened had the Nazis taken Moscow? The rest of the 200 pages is pure conjecture that makes no logical sense. Just because the Nazis successfully capture Moscow has no causal relationship to this book's fictive account of the Japanese attacking Los Angeles or the Panama Canal. Just because Moscow falls does not have any particular causal effect which would have put the Nazis three miles from Jerusalem. I found the book irritating, annoying, without any particualrly defensible premise, and a lousy piece of historical fiction. Good fiction gives voice to people who had none, and fills in voids which historical research can not fill. This tripe does neither.

185367463X13132005-05-23unhistoricmy regret with this book is the fact that it doesn't explore really the OKH suggestion of august 1941 : in fact from the beggining ,downing is in the realm of fantasy .
he doesn't explore the real opérationnal okh project and his real consequences ; he write too much about pacific and middle east and too little about russia ( why The moscow option in the case ? ) and he try to write 13 month of alternate history : these book is more a novel and has nothing to do with history.
in my view : a bad investissement. 185367463X2792005-03-11An Unlikeyl Alternative with little regard to the facts. This book suggests a reasonable alternate history turning point, however, it expands on the basic idea with some wildly unreasonable conclusions. Supply problems vanish or are ignored.
The Germans get simply impossible airlift support from the German airforce during the winter of 1941-42. The ground movement of supply also apparently disregarded all of their real life problems that were a major reason that the German advance ground to a halt.
The German Army gave it's all to just advance to the gates of Moscow in 1941. 'The Moscow Option' book suddenly ignores the vast distances and the 'supply nightmares' that the real life Germans faced.
The German High Command 'wargamed' the invasion almost a year earlier and they 'knew' from that wargame that the German Army would have to stop about 300 miles into Russia because the needed supplies could not advance as fast as their troops.
A pause was needed about 300 miles from the initial 'jump off' point, the Germans suffered their first major defeat of the war at this '300 mile pause line' simply because they had just about completely run out of both fuel and ammo at the frontlines. Their tank forces were breaking down in frightening numbers. Tanks badly needed replacement engines, artillery rounds were strictly rationed and even small arms ammo was in short supply.
The Germans suddenly became perfect and the Russians become even worse than their real life performance. If you change history, please do not raise the performance level of one side to an impossible high level and also reduce the Russian side without any reasonable regard for the real life facts.
185367463X2562004-11-08If the books is called "The Moscow Option"......then why do we spend the majority of the book everywhere but the Eastern Front?

I won't deny or disparage the actions in the Pacific and the role of the British, but if a book is supposed to be about the German war in Russia, perhaps it would do well to spend some time in that setting.

Instead, we get exceptional detail regarding British actions in North Africa, followed by hour-by-hour reworkings of American actions in the Pacific - and then we get sweeping generalities regarding the German actions in Russia.

The premise and title of the book are largely sidelined, as if they are of secondary importance. Why?

In this case, don't judge a book neither by its cover, nor by the synopsis printed thereupon.185367463X211162003-01-22had trouble suspending disbeliefThe premise behind The Moscow Option is to change two recorded events in WWII and speculate as to how these changes would have impacted the rest of the war. While I didn't have a problem with these two changes, they were plausible enough, I disagree with the author's speculated consequences on two points.
1. The Red Army had built up significant reserves and launched a counter-attack to throw the Germans back in several areas just as the attack on Moscow was called off. It seems to me that these reserves were ignored. I have made a study of the Eastern Front and cannot accept the casual dismissal of these forces by the author.
2. From what I have read about the Pacific War, including the very interesting speculation by Hector Bywater, the Japanese fleet simply could not have performed the missions proposed by the author in the latter part of the book.
If you are not that read up on either the European or Pacific theatres of WWII, this book may be of interest. For me, the assumptions were too thin for me to suspend disbelief.
This provocative alternate history looks at World War II from a new angle - what might have happened had the Germans taken Moscow in 1941. Based on authentic history and real possibilities, this book plays out the dramatic consequences of opportunities taken and examines the grotesque possibilities of a Third Reich triumphant. On September 30th, 1941, the Germans fight their way into the ruins of Moscow, and the Soviet Union collapses. Although Russian resistance continues, German ambition multiplies after this signal victory and offensives are launched in Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Hitler's armies, assured of success, make their leader's dreams reality, and Allied hopes of victory seem to be hopelessly doomed. David Downing's writing is fluid and eminently believable, as he blends actual events with the intriguing possibilities of alternate history. The Moscow Option is a chilling reminder that the course of World War II might easily have run very differently.
1853676039Disaster at D-Day: The Germans Defeat the Allies,June 1944 (Greenhill Military Paperbacks)156947494XSilesian Station1569474958Zoo Station0345490169Rising Sun Victorious: An Alternate History of the Pacific War1853676993Hitler Triumphant: Alternate Decisions of World War II5020Strategy5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713320011General AAS5026Weapons & Warfare5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books465308General5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713322011General AAS5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books5014General5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713316011General AAS5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books5032Russia9History1000Subjects283155Books713290011General AAS9History1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0071349227http://www.amazon.com/Agricultural-Futures-Options-Understanding-Implementing/dp/0071349227%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D00713492271823267http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NW6H49KVL._SL75_.jpg7548http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NW6H49KVL._SL160_.jpg160102http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NW6H49KVL.jpg475303HardcoverRichard Duncan332.64419780071349222880071349227EnglishEnglishEnglish9326000USD$60.00McGraw-Hill Trade1240Book1999-09-24McGraw-Hill TradeMcGraw-Hill TradeAgricultural Futures and Options: Understanding and Implementing Trades on the North American and European Markets1006292895USD$28.951710USD$17.106097USD$60.971810003.01100713492273442004-05-03Good book for the noviceThis book gives a great overview of the agricultural commodities markets of the world. It covers how the futures markets work, why they came into existence, and how they can be used to manage risk. The first six chapters are the most useful for the majority of readers; they focus mostly on the corn, soybeans, and wheat futures exchanges in the midwest United States. Several later chapters cover European exchanges and minor world exchanges. Don't expect to become a trader after reading this book, but it's a great place to get started learning about agricultural futures and options.Producers use these agricultural derivatives to protect against price risk; speculators are more than willing to assume those risks, hoping that price movements on the underlying products will translate into healthy trading profits for themselves. AGRICULTURAL FUTURES AND OPTIONS will give you a broader understanding of all sides of this tremendously complex yet important market. You will: Learn how to structure profitable trades for options on agricultural futures; Get inside hints for trading Euro-Differential contracts on the New York exchanges; Discover invaluable comparisons of the similarities and differences between trading in Chicago, London, and New York; Find complete industry regulations in both the United States and United Kingdom.

According to the dust jacket Dale is Emeritus Professor of International Banking at Southampton University, England. As one might expect, the book contains much technical jargon relating to capital market theory and accounting.

Dale certainly knows his subject and is up to speed with the literature - the bibliography of this 198-page book has 148 entries.

The book might appeal to students or specialists such as bankers, accountants and investment advisors, but it is hard going for the rest of us.

You almost need a financial dictionary by your side and a calculator to follow the intricacies of most of Dale's technical explanations. There is a short Glossary in the book, but it is totally inadequate.

To be fair, it is possible to skip over most of the financial detail and still get a feel for the atmosphere and activities that led to the inflation and deflation of the bubble.

Prior to reading the book I was unaware of the sophistication of financial techniques available in the 18th century. Many of the investment tools in common use today (eg options, discounted cash flow calculations, futures contracts) were available in essentially similar form then.

They were also abused in much the same way (and by people of similar character) as they were in all subsequent bubbles. Human nature never changes, and the possibility of large gain attracts the greedy, the credulous and the scoundrel.

Chapter 9 contains a technical and rather pedantic discussion of the lessons from the bubble that will be of interest to specialists, but probably not to most general readers.

If you have the skills and want to pore over the financial technicalities of the South Sea Bubble you will enjoy the book and you will benefit from Dale's impressive knowledge.

If you just want to know what happened and why it happened, there are more suitable and accessible accounts than this book.
For nearly three centuries the spectacular rise and fall of the South Sea Company has gripped the public imagination as the most graphic warning to investors of the dangers of unbridled speculation. Yet history repeats itself and the same elemental forces that drove up the price of South Sea shares to dizzying heights in 1720 have in recent years produced the global crash of 1987, the Japanese stock market bubble of the 1980s/90s, and the international dot.com boom of the 1990s.

The First Crash throws light on the current debate about investor rationality by re-examining the story of the South Sea Bubble from the standpoint of investors and commentators during and preceding the fateful Bubble year. In absorbing prose, Richard Dale describes the trading techniques of London's Exchange Alley (which included 'modern' transactions such as derivatives) and uses new data, as well as the hitherto neglected writings of a brilliant contemporary financial analyst, to show how investors lost their bearings during the Bubble period in much the same way as during the dot.com boom.
The events of 1720, as presented here, offer insights into the nature of financial markets that, being independent of place and time, deserve to be considered by today's investors everywhere. This book is therefore aimed at all those with an interest in the behavior of stock markets.0452281806Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation0471467146Manias, Panics, and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises (Wiley Investment Classics)047015263XThe Panic of 1907: Lessons Learned from the Market's Perfect Storm9562915700Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds0395859999The Great Crash of 1929713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books2589Economic History2581Economics3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713052011General AAS2604Finance3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2672Options2665Investing3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2592General355577011Popular Economics3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713066011General AAS355577011Popular Economics3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2612General3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713049011General AAS3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books46518418th Century4948England4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books465180General4948England4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books713309011General AAS4948England4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books713308011General AAS4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books266120General266119Finance173509Accounting & Finance173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books713536011General AAS266119Finance173509Accounting & Finance173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR2KH2W1JE0RMDYGLOBALIZATION!R2ZJ0DI0O9RO5QEssential Trading BooksB000728POYhttp://www.amazon.com/policy-options-response-occasional-papers/dp/B000728POY%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000728POYStefan TangermannUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishAmerican Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research5Book1986American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy ResearchAmerican Enterprise Institute for Public Policy ResearchU.S. farm policy options and EC response (AEI occasional papers)00000052107011History226680Agricultural Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books226682General226680Agricultural Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books713675011General AAS226680Agricultural Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books928288371Xhttp://www.amazon.com/Agora-low-skilled-European-prospects-Thessaloniki/dp/928288371X%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D928288371XUnknown Binding9789282883716928288371XEnglishOffice for the Official Publications of the European Communities78Book2000Office for the Official Publications of the European CommunitiesOffice for the Official Publications of the European CommunitiesAgora -
