Vergil's Aeneid: Books I-VI

Authors: Virgil and Clyde Pharr

Used price: $19.99

The Best of the Best
This is by far the best student edition of Vergil's Aeneid I have ever encountered. If you are looking for a textbook to teach the Aeneid, do not hesitate to purchase this one; optimus est!

Spectacular!
Whether one is studying the Aeneid or one simply wishes to read it for pleasure, Pharr's and Heath's edition is, when it comes to the first six books of Vergil's epic, the _ne plus ultra_ of student texts. The "Purple Vergil" renders the Aeneid both more accessible and easier to appreciate as a work of art.

This is due, in large part, to the text's impeccable format. Each page provides all the necessary vocabulary (especially common words are located in a fold-out list at the back), eliminating the constant drudgery of poring through one's Latin-English dictionary so common to most texts. Pharr and Heath also provide comprehensive notes for the poem--notably, helpful rearrangements of the more convoluted sentences. Additionally, a thorough appendix on Latin grammar and poetry is included (including declensions of those pesky Greek forms).

With this amazing text, Pharr and Heath have given anyone with a couple years of Latin the ability to read and enjoy this masterful work of literature in its original language. One only wonders why their format hasn't been wholly adopted by more authors...

The latin lover's dream
i'm a latin IV student and am currently using this book on my studies of the aeneid and is made in the form of:

Vergil's life, books I-VI, grammar, vocabulary

on every page of the story, clyde gives the story in latin, and below the text is the vocabulary for the words one may not know (very helpful and saves time), and underneath those vocabulary words are notes on the passage given on that particular page. every single page is created like this to help you glide through the pages without too much trouble and confusion.

the grammar section is filled with the declinations of nouns and every conjugation of verbs. most (if not every) uses of each noun form is given in detail and a very good explanation on how the verbs work (subjunctives, dum sentences, etc...) are also given. the book shows how to do scansions and includes the figures of speech such as hyperboles with examples that vergil uses et cetera make this book very useful.

the vocabulary section is broken down into 3 parts. the first being words used 12-23 times or more, 2nd being words used 6-11 times, and finally, the "pull out" sheet at the very back are words found 24 or more times (the general word list).

this book is very helpful in increasing one's vocabulary and grammar. for me, it's helped my fluency level in reading the latin. this book is a must have for those who love the latin language or just need to create a greater fluency in latin reading. trust me, this book is very worth every last penny.

the Sadeian Feminist
Angela Carter (1940-1992) has written a feminist reading of the Marquis De Sade. Carter has also used the work of the Marquis as a springboard for her own insights on the relation of sexuality to power. She is able to demonstrate that sexuality is constructed not from gender but rather form a relationship between power and politics. A must-read feminist classic.

Insightful
A very thoughtful book which puts Sade's work in a whole new light. Thoughtful, evenhanded and intelligent. This one is worth the read for anyone interested in going beyond the superficial with Sade. There is a lot of nonsensence about him -- finally, someone with something important to say!

GREAT!!!
I really like the author and I saw this book in a used bookstore and didn't get it. But then I couldn't get it out of my mind. So I went back to get it and I'm glad I did. It is a strong and moving book. He expresses the thoughts of someone who sees nothing but God. His life is God. This has nothing to do with any religion, as it is above a set of rules or beliefs. I can relate to him. Get the book if you can.

God's surging, dramatic tide of maelstrom possibility
The name Nikos Kazantzakis is anathema to so many; countless Americans probably only know him as the man who authored the book "The Last Temptation of Christ" on which the controversial (and widely demonized) movie was based. There was much more to this man than met the eye, however. Such Americans don't know the reader of Nietzsche and Bergson, the man who idolized both Christ and Lenin as saviors of humanity, the brooding genius whose incisive glacial intellect was perpetually at war with the hot blood of his idealism and passion. A fascinating and fragmented character who ascended the peaks and explored the dark valleys of human experience more than most, Kazantzakis commits pen to paper here with a spirituality that will haunt the reader; it is more alive and explosive than any camp-meeting revival. Writing with a distinctly modernist tone of world-smashing and revolution akin to Marx and with a racy, frenetic, hot-blooded pace which D.H. Lawrence would've admired, Kazantzakis introduces us to HIS idea of God: not the friendly father figure of Christian lore, but the turbulent, primordial drive for life and change within the universe, striving (successfully, through sometimes violent fits and starts) to ascend, to create, to thrive, to "transubstantiate matter into spirit". More akin to Bergson's idea of "elan vital", this is a series of spell-binding meditations that most mainline believers of any stripe probably wouldn't like; precisely because it scares the living daylights out of you with its frightening possibilities and its sirens' call of seemingly chaotic life-affirming zest. The late Kazantzakis beckons to us across the void, urging us to take the plunge and gaze into that vortex without fear, even though we will lose all we are in the process.

The bible of non-absolute faith (a reply to my friend below)
"Nonsense" is a very draft and cruel word to characterize an attempt to describe the CHAOS. For that's what this book is. How can one describe the Chaos, the human agony for the purpose of life? Every time you visualize yourself as a tiny dot (equals to nothing compared to the universe) and you ask the all-time-big-questions, you fill the fear. If you want to ease your heart, read the bible, or whatever the holy book of your religion (we all do in times of despair). You will be reassured for the absolute truth for all your questions and fears. But if you want to keep your eyes open and dare to look at the chaos this book will be a good companion. It is not perfect, but is the best attempt I know. Using Kazantzakis' words from "Report to Greco", the author is "facing the chaos and says I like it!"

Modern Dutch Grammar
I would recommend this grammar to anyone who has some background knowledge of Dutch and who needs an easy-to-use reference work. The grammar is clearly explained, the exercises are adequate. All examples are provided with English translations, and the book distinguishes between beginning and intermediate learners of Dutch. As a result, it tells the reader what is essential and what is more sophisticated knowledge. The book tries to be "user-friendly:" This means that grammatical terminology has been kept to a minimum. The only part that I did not like about this book is that the topics are arranged alphabetically. So, if you are interested in, say, the present tense formation of Dutch, you look it up under "present tense", the past tense is located under "past," etc. Such an organizing principle does not give a clear overview of the verbal system in Dutch. The same can be said about pronouns, adjectives, etc. This organization of topics also defeats the need for an index at the end of the book. But, in spite of this shortcoming, this is a good tool for intermediate learners of Dutch.

Neue Kommunikative Grammatik: A Communicative Grammar Worktext With Written and Oral Practice

For the Intermediate student...
I am a beginner German student, doing home study as well as using a private German tutor three hours a week. I found this book to be too confusing to use for a beginner. The Grammer sections are fantastic and have many useful examples, but the written and oral practice are too difficult for someone without a strong vocabulary base. It was especially dissapointing to realize that the answers are not included and you have to purchase the answer key in a seperate book. I recommend this workbook for any student who has intermediate level vocabulary skills... and don't forget to buy the answer key!

Ausgezeichnet!
This book is a wonderful text on German grammatical forms. It's in-depth enough to be informative to intermediate students, yet covers the basics like definitive and infinitive articles, and noun and adjective declension for beginners (like myself). The only negative is the absence of an answer key (why 5, not 4); purportedly sold separately, though I've yet to find it.

Good for Intermediates and as a Thorough Reference
I used this book with my third year students as a review of grammatical structures already learned and for the excellent activities. The activities were well thought out and support the prevalent theories on second language acquisition and using the communicative approach. It offers an excellent way to fine tune all grammar points learned in a first and second year course and goes into some detail concerning the finer points of these grammar concepts, giving the interested student a challenge, if desired or needed. Subcategories are well divided so you can pick and choose which areas to highlight or ignore if you please. I myself have used the activities extensively and would say it is definitely a good supplemental tool for the intermediate and advanced German student. Another German teacher in my district intends to use it based on my recommendation.
