Introduction to the larger set, good teaser
I like the Pimsleur system. I have used it with Traveler's Spanish, the Spanish I, and this set for French. I prefer the cassettes to the CDs becasue of they are easier back up so as to retrace areas. The concept of listen/repeat in your car on the way to work without alot of book-study at the lower levels is effective, easy, fun.
The purpose of this particular French set of 4 cassettes is to provide an introduction into the Pimsleur system to see if you like the system and want to move directly up to the larger Level I set.
If you are planning to use this set to get ready for a trip to France, this may not be the correct set for you. If you will only be in Paris two days or less, this might be OK. But if you are going to be there 3 days or longer, or if you want to brush up on your high school French, then pass over this set and go for the Traveler's Edition set, which is specifically designed for those purposes.
It works, its fun, get the right one.
If you are not sure if you have any aptitude for French or if you want to go further, this is a good set to sample. If you know you want to go more deeply into the language, this will not be enough.

Quick, but not enough content
Don't think that you are getting 8 different lessons. Each subsequent lesson spends about 70%-80% reviewing the previous lesson. The quality of the lessons are good though, but I wish I knew that the 8 lessons don't teach much French at all. I would save the money and buy the full French 1 Language Program which has 16 CDs (the first 4 are very similar to this one).

The Definitive Textbook on International Financial Markets
A very readable (and detailed if you read those parts) introduction to the subject of international finance.

The standard MBA text book, and one of a handful of finance books recently deemed significant enough to be translated into Chinese.

Also, how can you resist a book with sections on topics such as 'Banking Telecommunications and the Information Superspyway' as well as dry and very detailed math on derivatives trading models.

Other reviews from the great and good:

"This is the best text I have seen in international finance. Good work." Stephen P. Magee, Department of Finance, University of Texas.

"Grabbe had taught several 'Market Wizards' to trade currencies--and this is the book they recommend for understanding currency fundamentals." Dr. Alexander Elder, Director, Financial Trading Seminars.

"This is an original and insightful presentation of material that is often ignored or badly treated in other books." Richard J. Herring, Director, Wharton Program in International Banking and Finance.

"An exceptionally well-written book with detailed coverage of the financial markets in the international scene." Rahul Bishnoi, Department of Finance, University of Wisconsin.

". . . too much detail on markets." [Name Omitted], Tufts University.

"Excellent book . . . teaches students about actual markets and financial instruments..." J. A. Rosensweig, Yale University.

". . . an excellent and lucid analysis of the functioning of the international money market." C. Lawrence, Columbia University.

"Last year I found your book in the Beijing Library (the National Library of China) and had it xeroxed. . . Now I am cooperating with one of my friends to translate it into Chinese . . . China is trying very hard to apply the market mechanism to her economy." Zhang Bin, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China.

"By far the best book available. Well-written, up-to-date & accessible . . ." Asim Erdilek, Case Western University.

"This is an excellent, challenging, well-written book." E. B. Fredrikson, School of Management, Syracuse University.

John Turner, euro consultant
Most of the in-depth analysis of the euro and its likely future has been written by people who are trying to prove something - either that the euro is a good idea or a bad one. So it is refreshing to read a book which analyses the chances of the euro succeeding with no apparent bias.

The lack of bias may be due to it having been written by an American, who therefore has no particular axe to grind.

On that basis I recommend "A guide to the euro" by Professor H. Levin, ISBN 0-618-21547-6, published by Houghton Mifflin.

There is plenty in the book to please and concern the anti-euro lobby and the pro-euro lobbies alike. To find out what Professor Levin concludes about the euro you will need to read the book.

The Impact of the Euro: Debating Britain's Future
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (January, 2000)
Authors: Mark Baimbridge, Brian Burkitt, and Philip Whyman
Amazon base price: $85.00

Useful contribution to vital debate
This is a fascinating collection of articles on the vital question - should Britain enter the euro? Nine economists evaluate the economic and policy implications of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Three somewhat atypical representatives of business - Stephen Davies of the Institute of Directors, and the Lords Haskins and Simon - discuss its likely effect on British firms. Couldn't they find anybody from manufacturing industry?

Unfortunately, the editors include only two trade unionists, both of whom support EMU. Why didn't they find someone to speak for the majority of trade union members who oppose it? Finally, four MPs discuss its effect upon national sovereignty.

The contribution by John Edmonds, the GMB's General Secretary, is most revealing. He argues for conditionally supporting EMU. Yet he admits, "The tendency in any negotiations is for conditions to be successively stripped away until all that remains is a stark position of support covered by a few words of threadbare rhetoric." Quite!

The editors write that entering EMU "is intended to be a one-way shift towards future economic integration." But that is not all that EMU means: Edmonds openly says that he wants to 'achieve extensive political union'. That is why he supports our entry into the euro: the euro was, until recently, the key motor for driving us all into the single European state that the EU's leaders all want.

Blair has now had to accept that he cannot presently win a referendum on the euro. However, this does not mean that he will respect our wishes in future. The EU's leaders can advance on many different fronts and employ many different devices to form a single European state: the Euro-army, the Charter of Fundamental Rights, Corpus Juris, a single taxation policy, etc.

The majority of the British people do not want to enter the euro. Doesn't democracy have something to do with what people want?

A great complement to a more practical Italy guidebook
It would be a pity for anyone to travel to Italy - or any other country - without having a handy informative resource on the rich history and culture of the country.

If your travelling style involves much more than racing through monuments and ticking off the standard "must see" list, because you seek to more deeply understand the present by looking at the past, this might be the perfect handy companion to complement a more practical travel guidebook.

More than one-quarter of the 400-plus pages are devoted to the history of Italy, with well written sections in Ancient Rome, the Renaissance, and the emergence of the modern Italian state in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There are also superb featured sections on topics such as the Mafia, Italian fashion, and Italian cinema. These discussions are very compact. While not substituting for in-depth analysis on these topics, they constitute an excellent survey of different phases of contemporary and ancient history of Italy.

These are the main strengths of this book. It is a wonderful resource to consult while travelling after you have visited a monument, or as you reflect on the rich series of events and forces which have shaped the arts, political life, and institutions of this country.

Travellers who mainly want a helpful guide on planning travel to Italy and practical information such as museum visiting hours, best driving routes, where to find the best gelattos, etc. will find other travel guides more complete on these topics. You may think about using this book as a complement to one of these more practical guides.

The Law and Practice of Offshore Banking and Finance
Published in Hardcover by Quorum Books (30 March, 1996)
Author: Edmund M.A. Kwaw
Amazon base price: $99.95
Used price: $64.95

Good, solid title.
As an attorney with a keen interest in the area, and both a practice and academic interest in the same, I was very pleased with the book. Mr. Kwaw provides an excellent overview of the structures, methodologies and other important information in the subject matter. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Eurosecurities financing. My only gripe with the book is (and I do find this annoying) is the misnomer title. Although the book is titled "... Offshore Banking & Finance", perhaps a more appropriate title would have been "... Eurocurrency Banking & Finance". Though this may seem like a minor quibble, the practical implications are quite important, as offshore banking and related activies are not necessarily structured in euro-currency, and this book deals exclusively with aspects of the eurocurrency market. Still, an excellent book. Recommended.

Book Defective
I also received a book where the pages were stuck together as well as where one page was just blank. Otherwise the pictures are great.

Well produced showing excellent technical skills.
Despite the caution expressed by one reviewer my book was not soiled by spilt glue! Indeed, as with all the Edition Euros books that I have (and all of the Bruno Gmunder imprints) the quality of the book is beyond criticism.

As for the photographs, Messana presents an array of very 'masculine' models of the older, more pumped type. Whilst I do not particularly find this type of physique to be erotically charged, I can certainnly report that these pictures will stimulate many people who are in love with portrayals of the modern nude male. Messana seems to be able to get his camera inside the models' heads and bring out some real feeling and emotion, one of which is surely joy.

So buy it, it's not expensive and is a great addition to any collection.

The Mature Male Nude!
This photographer's work is a pleasure to view. These are mature, well-developed nude men in black & white photos who seem to overflow with sexuality & emotion. They truly love being exhibitionist. Thanks to a wonderful photographer, Jose Messana, who really knows how to bring out the best in his models. You can tell Jose takes a lot of care in picking the right models and men to photograph, and captures their beauty with perfect lighting and shadows. I really enjoyed this book. Some of his images remind me of Tom Bianchi.

As a collector of this series of books, I recommend this one. This photographer who was born in Zurich, Switzerland is one of the best, and I assume that's why he is so popular and one of the best known photographer's of nudes in Europe.

What is SEXMACHINE ?
I was deeply disappointed when I received the book. No photos are sexy, beautiful, aesthetic or sensual at all. Models are neither muscular nor well-builed. I don't understand what kind of people like these photpgraphs.

Sexy, Young Images by Lalli
Lalli has captured some very young & sexy men in this images. These very handsome guys are shown in natural poses, doing everyday things. There are a few nude images included. The models seem to enjoy themselves posing for the photographer. You can tell Lalli has a good relationship with those he photographs. This book is number 17 in the Euros Series. It's a definite book for your collection. I hope there are more books issued in the future showcasing the new photographers. These Euros Edition Series books were beautifully designed and the quality & binding is also excellent, thanks to the publisher Bruno Gmunder. Let's hope there is more on the way!!!!!!

NOTES FOR THE COLLECTOR OF MALE EROTICA
Lalli's Art will make a fascinating, if sometimes disturbing, addition to your male photobook collection. On one hand the photographs are incredible Art revealing raw male energy and power, albeit from a somewhat violent angle. At the same time, though, some of the violent images of testosterone-gone-berserk, (models holding guns and knives and what not), look hokey and staged. Still, FASCINATING Art, and a neccesary addition to your collection...a guilty pleasure, though...

Understanding Europeans (Understanding Europeans, 2nd Ed)

Arrogant and full of stigmatisms
There was very little I could agree with in this book. It was so annoying to read that I actually finished it, but I can tell you, it did get my blood pressure up. It is another great example of how some Americans see themselves as the 'creme de la creme' of the world.

Interesting
"Tell them you're a writer." That is a chapter title in this book, and it illustrates one of the differences between Europeans and Americans. For me, this chapter struck home. I have been working towards a career in writing recently, first by applying to graduate school where I hope to complete a Masters of Fine Arts degree. But when people ask me what I plan to do with that degree, I can not tell them the truth: that I want to write. Instead, I have to say that I plan to teach or take an editing position along with writing (which is true--I am not so naive as to believe in a magical diploma that opens up the world of publishing--but it is akin to someone who is studying to be a surgeon to say that they plan to work as an intern). In some ways, I feel like St. Peter denying Jesus; I cannot admit to my true purpose because of what people might think. And that is because writing is not viewed as a proper occupation by the majority of Americans, whereas in Europe, that answer would be sufficient.

This is indicative of my feeling for this book of Miller's, which is supposedly about those folk across the water, but ends up helping describe my neighbor and myself much more. Although we are mostly aware of the Puritan and commercial streaks in our national character, to have it compared and contrasted to the Europeans makes it much easier to understand. There are some basic differences between our world views that Miller is able to pinpoint with some accuracy.

Understanding Europeans benefits from Miller's use of his own marriage to a French woman as examples, but there are not enough of them to overcome some of the drudgery of his psychoanalytical approach to his subject. While slow at times, perseverance was rewarded by a comprehensive overview of the European state of mind.

Although global communication is helping to homogenize the world (not a totally positive thing in my opinion), culture differences are still strong and go much deeper than the simple talk and entertainment that we might share. Nationalism, something Americans only understand to a small extent, once again is making itself known in Europe, and we would be wise to be aware of its past impact in history. Miller helps explain the psychology of Europeans, from the lingering effects of feudalism to the most recent trauma of a war that affected the entire family rather than just able-bodied men.

Understanding Americans
This is one of the most interesting books I've read in some time. While I can't vouch for its descriptions of the European mentality, I did find that its constrasting descriptions of the American mentality very much rang true. (Of course, being generalizations, they won't always apply to all Americans.) In fact, the book helped me to understand and clarify my own (very American) feelings and attitudes about many of the cultural issues the author discusses, issues on which Americans and Europeans apparently have significant cultural differences.
