A globalized world can often feel murky. "The Internationalist" brings clarity by explaining who an internatinalist is and what such an unorthodox career can offer. The book is important reading for professionals currently engaged in the field and for neophytes wishing to enter it.

A Must Read for Current & Future Internationalists

Review Date: 2000-02-15
I am writing this book review as a practitioning internationalist for 12 years and a current executive trainer & coach in the field of International Leadership Development.

The Internationalists is an excellent guidebook for Human Resource, Organizational Development, and Training & Development professionals, as well as, current and future internationalists.

Internationalist is a distinct career with unique skill sets, competencies and acumen which are prerequesites, in addition to functional expertise such as marketing, sales, or finance, for anyone being developed or selected for an international assignment.

Traditional human resource, organizational development and business education in the USA have not addressed, until very recently, the dinstinct role performed by an Internationalist.

Catherine Scherer provides a succinct, concise and practical guidebook concerning the successful selection and development of an Internationalist, based upon real world experiences of practicing internationalists. This book belongs in the core curriculum of business, human resource and organizational development educational programs, as well as, on the desks (not bookshelves) of managers and executives working in the global world of business.

The proactive, strategic approach of this book is right on target and explains why so many organizations are unsuccessful in the recruitment, development and support of employees on international assignments. More important, the book provides an effective, proactive framework for "learning from experience" of practicing internationlists.

Those individuals interested in expanding their perspective and return on investment related to Intellectual Capital and Global Human Resource Managment, will find The Internationlists to be a wise short-term investment, which will contribute long-term yields.

excellent introduction to email

This book does not focus exclusively on a single topic, but instead provides a well-rounded discussion on all things email-related. For example, it does not focus exclusively on any one messaging implementation, nor does it get bogged down on technical discussions of protocols and message boundaries, but instead it covers these topics (and more) as part of a comprehensive discussion on electronic mail in general.

Each chapter tackles a broad subject and then provides a studied discussion of several touchstone issues related to that discussion. For example, there is a chapter on sending email in an enterprise network which provides ample discussions on several subordinate topics, including an introduction to LDAP directories, a summary discussion on various gateways and integration services that are likely to be used in that kind of environment, and details for configuring popular messaging clients to take advantage of these services.

In this regard, Internet Messaging provides a well-rounded introductory discussion on the subject of Internet email at large, making it perhaps the best novice guide on the market. It is especially well-suited for people who are just stepping into messaging concepts, but advanced users and implementors will also find plenty of useful nuggets.

The primary use of the internet, and most people ignore it.

This book is for you whether you are a systems administrator, have a personal or a family computer. You will come away feeling comfortable and confident with firewalls and implementing security policy. And through the use of historical background and diagrams, a better understanding of your system overall. This easy read covering everything from children on the internet to industrial espionage details exactly what you are protecting against, how to identify "suspicous" activity and what to do if you've been victimized.

The wealth of easy to understand information in this book makes it a valuable asset to a wide range (i.e., levels of technical expertise) of Internet users.

The author sets the stage for addressing the topic of Internet Security by first covering the Internet basics in easy to read fashion. He explains that it's through the various Internet subsystems that Internet Security breaches can blossom and he addresses these potential risk areas in a methodical fashion.

By leaning towards simplicity and basics, the author is able to cover a wide range of security issues and a wide range of areas of security vulnerabilities. He then addresses means that are currently available to minimize these vulnerabilities.

It's obvious from reading the book that Internet Security will never be risk free and the author describes the things that are currently being pursued to make the Internet a more secure environment.

I feel that this book is a "must read" for anyone who uses the Internet whether they're security conscious or not. If they're currently not security conscious, or aware of their vulnerabilities, this book will serve as a real "eye-opener".

Once, in Eric Morris' Acting class, I mistakenly referred to this book as Irrelevant Acting. Nothing could be farther from the truth. This is one of the best books on acting ever!

The exercises and work in this book have enhanced my acting tremendously, given me a way of working that is unmatched by any other acting book I've ever come accross (and I've read a ton of em) and has made me a powerful teacher and director in my own right.

It explains Eric's Technique of Freeing the Instrument (Explained in great detail in his No Acting Please which should be read prior to this book.) It explains a new way of looking at material and personally connecting it to the actor through choices and choice approaches. It truly helps make the actor an artist in that he creates and is truly using himself.

If you utilize this work and combine it with some common sense of your own (if you don't combine it with some common sense--some of it can get you into trouble) your acting will take on a new dimension; you will be more open as an actor artist and human being.

You will learn how to free and tap into your emotions. How to make personal choices for your material. How to make Choice approaches or tools to connect you to the work and more! Read this book. Do the exercises. I can't recommend it enough.

Do read No Acting Please first and follow it with this amazing masterpiece.

I'll admit that at first glance Eric Morris's System can seem scary and misaligned. But I believe it to be a very misunderstood system.

I too was skeptical in the beginning, but after studying this technique (with Eric, but mostly with Anthony Vincent Bova in NYC, Eric's protégé), and after seeing the difference from "acting" and what this Work creates, there's no way I'd ever go back to the "acting" form.

Eric Morris teaches the actor how to react honestly and in the moment, including everything that's going on inside and out-the other actor, the props, the imagined objects that one might be working for-that impels you to "do" whatever the character is required to "do", but out of a real reaction, not just because you're doing it.

I've studied Adler, Strasberg, Meisner, and with Robert Lewis. I've hashed through the process of verbs, actions, objectives, obstacles, and onward; and they're all good and dandy for figuring out what's going on in a script, what the characters are doing and why; but other than that, these techniques never helped me figure out HOW to make it real to ME... How to get to a place where I'm actually functioning from a real, organic, truthful state ... How to get to the point where I am "doing" all the script tells me to do, fulfilling the "actions," out of an honest REACTION to what's going on.... Not just "playing" as if I am; how, in essence, creating the realities of the character....

No matter where you go, all the great teachers (and actors) say the same thing, "Acting is reacting." Even the most used and cherished word in the actor's language, LISTENING, is about focusing outside of yourself and REACTING to what is there. This Work trains the actor to create the stimuli that will fulfill the demands of the piece, specifically, wholly, and with Truth.

For the most part, plays and movies are imagined circumstances, and we as actors, have to create stimuli to react from, so we're not just faking, or indicating our performance. I'd rather watch two people have a relationship on film or on stage, than two actors reciting words, no matter how well they "act" it. If they don't believe it, I won't. This System trains you to create those stimuli and REACT to them honestly, fully and truthfully.

A crucial part of Eric's System is based on Instrumental Work, which is the process of identifying blocks and fears and tensions to expression and, one-by-one, through the use of hundreds of exercises, eliminating them. It's really about self-awareness-learning about yourself and how you function, so you can "get out of your way" and function truthfully on stage or film and get to where you need to get to in a scene. I think this is the aim of every method, but I feel that this System is the only one to address the issues of the actor on a personal level. If I'm tense and depressed (in real life; me the actor), I'm not going to be able to REACT truthfully in a scene where the character has just won the lottery and is jumping with joy. If I push for the emotion, I'll be faking and will "act" that I'm joyful. If this is enough for you, then Eric's work is definitely not your thing. But if you're looking for creating reality and REACTING with truth, nothing surpasses this Work.

I know that Meryl Streep, Brando, Ed Norton, Johnny Depp, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and a handful of other amazing actors don't fake it, don't just indicate the realities of the character and the circumstances. They create them. Be it imagined stimuli they are creating, or through the available stimulus around them, they open themselves up and REACT truthfully to everything -the other actors, the set, the space, the props, the object or person via Sense Memory, etc. I KNOW they do this for a fact! They've talked about it for years.

Eric helps you get to the place that they do-where you can function truthfully, where your instrument is accessible and available, where you are open and are willing to go where the character needs to go, emotionally, psychologically, and physically.

My advice is read Eric's books. If they pique any interest in you, if they strike a cord, study with Eric or Anthony, or at least contact them for further information about the system. I think you'll be quite surprised and utterly amazed at the tools this Work can provide you as an actor.

Casey Communications CEO Paul E. Casey presents Is Self-Employment for You?, a no-nonsense introduction to the demands of self-employment that offers a diagnostic the reader can use to discern whether he or she has the personality and temperament to be one's own boss. From how self-employment will affect one's personal life, to capitalizing upon one's experience and strengths regardless of educational background, to avoiding costly mistakes and earning clients' respect, tips, tricks, and techniques for keeping overhead down, and even the peril of having too much money (businesses have failed because too much capital promoted an illogical drive to spend the extra capital right away on overpriced office space and too many employees), Is Self-Employment for You? is general enough to apply to any would be entrepreneur but offers advice that is right on the nose in response to daily realities. Highly recommended introductory reading for anyone contemplating starting up their own business.

I like Paul Casey's book, and I have recommended it numerous times since first reading it. Casey is writes from his own experience as a self-employed business owner, which he has been for the past 15 years.

No "how to" book, Casey gets his readers to examine themselves closely for motivation, personality style and ability to stay with something for the long haul, because that is what successful self-employment is. An "I'll try it for a few months or a year and see what happens" mentality is foredoomed to failure.

Learning to view yourself as a "free agent"--as a person who markets your skills and talents to different "buyers," whether you're self-employed or working for someone else, is a must for a person seeking his or her own way in today's marketplace. Whether as self-employed or working for someone else, you have to think in terms of controlling your own destiny rather than trusting it to someone else on whom you depend.

Casey blends what he says with a wonderful sense of humor, frequently at his own expense. Often I found myself laughing out loud just as I GOT what he was saying.

If you're thinking about self-employment at all, or if you've recently been laid off, this book is a must read.

The back of Ron Cornwell's book says "Stop putting it off, you can start your business today" - I couldn't agree more. If you are an entrepreneur and have ever thought about starting a business, now is the time. I have read hundreds of business books, but this is the first business book that elaborates on failures. In chapter 9 he talks about crabs in a basket and this is a great analogy as to how we behave when we are taking a chance. As entrepreneurs we are afraid of failure, we are scared, we try to hide it but sometimes we falter. Starting your own business can be one of the scariest things you ever do, it is also a very emotional venture, which most business books never touch on. Ron's book is one I would recommend because it is so very different from every other "how to" book out there, this book can help prepare you for every step of your journey on becoming a successful entrepreneur.

I recently reread this delightful book and enjoyed it all over again. It was one of the first memoirs about Italy I read, but it has held its appeal. It is unique in that it is from an involved father's perspective--less romantic than others and more realistic. While it's lovely to swoon over the glowing descriptions of Tuscany from the patio of the finally restored abode, drinking homemade wine, it's also great to get the nitty-gritty of day-to-day life in the city. Tim Parks's slightly acerbic view is funny and down to earth and gives a crystal clear eyed interpretation of Italian life from an Englishman's perspective that makes you feel right at home there. Well worth the read, and reread.

This is the second time I've purchased this book. I enjoyed it so much (along with the sequel, Italian Neighbors) that I loaned it to my friends and it was never returned. An entertaining account of the experience of marrying into an Italian family, with all its internecine conflicts and quirks, and moving to Italy with all its governmental and religious idiosyncrasies. Well written and funny. It doesn't take an Italian to recognize the eternal struggle to find a place in a strange society....and the Italians can be very strange.

This book was required reading for an Italian Culture course I'm taking. What wisdom my professor has shown in assigning this book! In addition to gaining valuable insight into contemporary Italian culture, I was also very moved by this story of an Englishman raising his half-Italian children in Italy. He observes how Italian his children are and how early they recognize that he is not one of them. He explores such features of Italian culture as Mother Worship (Mammismo) and the curious fact that this most Catholic country of Europe also has Western Europe's lowest birth rate. All Italians talk about the "sacrifice" of having children. To have more than one child is madness from their point of view because Italian children must have the best everything for the entire lives of their parents. The parents "sacrifice" so that their children can have the best schools, the best toys, the best clothing. The parents pretty much support them their entire lives, even buying their houses for them when they finally leave home and marry. He sees the blatant sexism of the Italian culture wherein gender roles are inculcated into the children from the cradle. The Italians see something wrong with his giving his son piano lessons and letting his daughter participate in "boys'" activities. (There is also a certain schadenfreude at a someone's having no male offspring, especially if that someone is your landlord.) But he endures it all good-humoredly and takes great delight in watching his children grow up "Italian." He takes them on walks and bike rides where they discover shrines to forgotten saints in the middle of the wilderness. He takes them to the beach where the kids get an unexpected introduction to the facts of life when they come upon the lifeguard and his girlfriend in flagrante delicto behind some rocks. The book is very funny as well as insightful. I laughed many times throughout the book and was unexpectedly moved in the oddest places, such as when their children find out that it's really their parents who bring their Christmas presents and not "Santa Lucia," the local version of Santa Claus.

But the real star of the book is gloriously beautiful and ageless Italy, so gorgeous you just want to gasp. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who is a parent and/or loves Italy. Four and a half stars rounded up to five.
